Alternate Ability Purchase

Post by Mach5RR » Sat Nov 12, 2011 2:14 am

I'm curious if anyone has created an alternate purchase system for abilities?
Currently, the system is 6 points spread between six abilities (default 0), but you can take points from other ones (to a min of -5).

It was thought while looking at racial backgrounds, because unless your elf maxes out his DEX, giving him a +1 in it is meaningless. With an elf, you are not really giving him a +1 to DEX, -1 to CON. You're setting his max DEX at 6 and his max CON at 4.

I'm just seeing if someone has created an (easy) scaling system where, say 1~2 costs 1 point, 3~4, costs 2 points each, etc.

I have created a variant of True20 specifically designed for D&D style fantasy.

http://true20.wikidot.com/true20-fantasy-variant

It includes the following point-buy system:

You have 8 points. Abilities start at 0 and can be increased by spending points. You can also gain 1 additional point by lowering one ability to -1. You cannot lower more than 1 ability to -1. The following table shows the cost of buying abilities:

Code: Select all

Point Cost	Ability
0 0
1 1
2 2
4 3
7 4
