Wonders of Thedas Episode 53: Blood on Your Hands

Welcome to the Wonders of Thedas, your one-stop-shop for all your Dragon Age roleplaying game needs!

You can hear the episode above, or you can listen on iTunes, Google Play, and Soundcloud!

We cannot wash the red out of this episode, as we talk about a particularly vile specialization: the Blood Mage. This dark and unique spec has quite the name for itself in Thedas, and is one of the more iconic aspects of the Dragon Age universe! And you can be one, I guess? If you really want to? We also keep mentioning the questions like it is surprising we have so many, and take way too much time trying to think of clever blood-based puns.

Also Jessica might be a maleficar, please send help...

Re: Wonders of Thedas Episode 53: Blood on Your Hands

Blood magic is a very interesting subject, which I think presents many scenario ideas that are completely unique to the Dragon Age world.

Before I get onto discussing that though, I should say that I took the plunge after your advice and downloaded Syrinscape! Perhaps serendipity played its part too, as during my visit to the UK Games Expo I came across the booth that was advertsing Syrinscape, spoke to the guy there and underwent a demo that encouraged me to take the plunge. I subscribed to the service as you suggested and began downloading the sound sets, deciding to also buy some decent speakers, which seems a must. I then used it during a DA session two days ago, and the feedback was good! It does require more kit to carry about, of course, so unless you are hosting a game there could be transportation issues. Nevertheless, I deem it a success and thank you for the encouragement. My one question now is: is it possible to use the 'design your own soundset' to change the background music to that of Dragon Age background music? For example, from the DA Inquisition soundtrack, could I insert the 'Western Approaches' theme into the 'Desert' soundset?

Getting back to Blood Magic, beyond the issues of damage dealing and healing, or casting through life energy instead of Mana, the critical issue around it to me is the way it can violate free will. The two most powerful spells in the whole of Thedas are surely Blood Slave and Thought Taking and both combine incredibly well with the Memory spell from the Spirit school, where any such violations can be wiped from the victim's memory. These spells alone explain why mages are feared and locked away in towers, while apostate's are hunted mercilessly.

Thought Taking, lest we forget, grants access to a person's most innermost thoughts - it provides a true window into men's souls. No secret would be safe, which makes me believe that the idea the Wrack spell would be favoured during interrogation is a nonsense - why bother inflicting pain, when you can pry open the mind with complete accuracy? I also think that virtually anyone of power would have access to an individual who can use such enhanced questioning techniques - what King or Crime Lord would be without one? Let's be honest - the Chantry would also have their own sanctioned interrogators - a specialist branch of the Templars probably exists to enable such. One could capture and interrogate someone, wrench their secrets from them, then cast Memory to wipe their knowledge of the experience.

The use of Blood Slave can of course enable some pretty unsavoury acts to be committed by depraved individuals wishing to sate their base desires. However, it is in the course of espionage and crime that it again becomes likely to be a tool of power - deniable 'Black Ops' when the power is Andrastian. Want to forge a document? Compel the holder of the seal to make their mark, then wipe the memory of the act. Want to set someone up? Compel them to commit a crime in front of witnesses. Need to assassinate someone? Compel their bodyguard to do it, or give your assassin access, or just make the mark kill themselves.

One result of this is that I think Tranquil mages would in such a society be making plenty of warding talismans and rings against Blood Magic, or items that boost Willpower (Self Discipline) tests - they would be in huge demand by the powerful. Spell Shield, Dispel Magic and Anti-Magic Ward would be spells that Court/Bodyguard Wizards would have by default, in an attempt to protect their patrons from hostile magic.

Another result would be people blaming Blood Magic for many of their own transgressions. How would the truth be ascertained, except by other Blood Magic spells? There are plenty of other effects I'm sure, but those are for starters.

Lastly, with regard to encouraging people to join as Patrons to support the podcast, I have a suggestion - offer to write up any magic item of choice from DA: Origins or DA:2 for Patrons, which you can then add to top up the Back Shelves. I've already joined, of course, but such a reward is simple, unique to the Patron and increases the value of the Back Shelves resource.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

As for getting Dragon Age music INTO Syrinscape, that is likely not easy.

Syrinscape has a Soundset Creator program, you can upload your own sounds only if you have .ogg and .wav files.

If you do have them, you can download the soundset you want to fix up and then add the samples into it.

To clarify, do you mean that each Patron could request an item once per month, or all the Patrons can poll for an item that everyone can see?
Or a combination of the two, where each Patron can suggest an item that Patrons get to see?

Oh - what I meant was that as a one-off sort of 'welcome' gift, a Patron could suggest an item from Origins or DA:2, which you could stat up and add to the back shelves. It wouldn't be an ongoing thing. Just an immediate perk from joining the club, which also benefits the community as a whole.

Gotcha! I'll have to look into this! Thanks!
