    conversion note: in the book, Iron Devil is named Iron Golem. I felt it in poor taste to let a Nazi monster be named for Jewish legend, thus the change

    a homeless vagrant, Jesse Altier was kidnapped by and experimented upon by the Freak Maker, turned into a fire-breathing demonic dog creature. but when a citywide blackout knocked out the magnetic locks, jesse and other victims took their chance to escape into the city. Since then, Jesse, dubbed Hellhound by the press, has lived by hiding in the back alleys, tunnels and abandoned places of the city, staying one step ahead of his former captors. while many think him a monster, the city's street people have a growing fondness for their sometime protector

    once a homeless bum so drunk and drug-addled to forget his own name, the man who would be plague was grabbed off the street for illegal human experimentation. when the results were proving too successful and before he could escape and ruin everything, the doctors gave him a supposedly lethal dose and dumped his body in the river. But he did not die. now nigh immortal and able to inflict disease with a touch, Mr. Plague was also afflicted with an almost rabid need for violence and mayhem, and became a mad predator loosed upon the city streets
