    Re: Kreuz Control: BLOODLINES!

While I was largely unaware of the larger Bloodlines storyline, I always liked Loose Cannon, who is probably still DC's clearest Hulk expy.

collection of Sin: each of the parasites has one of the seven sins as their defining character trait
motivation - harvest: the parasites are collecting human spinal fluids to gestate the Taker
our numbers are few: with Slodd's death, the parasites are incredibly cautious, as losing even one more of themselves could spell disaster

The central antagonists of Bloodlines, the parasites (called such by our heroes, the creatures never give their species name) are first encountered in the pages of L.E.G.I.O.N., when their creepy-as-heck gigeresque-looking organic ship is found and fought over between space pirates and a L.E.G.I.O.N. scouting party that includes Lobo. the seven creatures awaken, kill most of both boarding parties and taking their human-looking forms, but when Lobo kills Slodd, they lose the ability to take any more disguises. at any rate, the Parasites kill everyone except Lobo and new character Layla, the two of whom manage to escape and disable the ship, but unwittingly send it to Earth.

Once on earth, the Parasites get right to their MO for the remainder of the crossover: to hunt, kill and sometimes eat humans, but especially draining their spinal fluids, harvesting it for some fiendish purpose in their hastily built lair. these efforts proceed apace, despite multiple encounters with DC's heroes and the New Bloods created from some of their surviving victims.

it's towards the end we readers and DC's heroes finally learn the answer while LEGION seals the spatial rift that the original ship came through. the Parasites are in fact lovecraftian horrors from a dying universe, servitors of a monstrous, world-ending entity that they call the Taker, and their harvest meant to foster the creation of a new Taker here on earth, requiring them to sacrifice themselves to finally birth this gigantic monster in the final issues. While seemingly invincible due to a paralytic, life-draining aura, this power has no effect upon the New Bloods, who attack the newborn monster while it's still comparatively weak, ultimately combining their powers to destroy the creature, ending the Parasite threat once and for all, as far as the greater DC universe is concerned.

    Special notes:

the Parasites do have some customization, such as Pritor being the smart one, Venev's arms or Angon's brute strength, but not enough for it to matter. similarly, a plot point is that the Parasites in fact get weaker as the crossover goes on, as early on they trade blows with the Cyborg Superman and Eradicator and more-or-less ignore anything Batman does to stop them, but by the concluding 'Bloodbath' issues Glonth is lain out in a single punch by martian Manhunter. this is due to the nascent Taker drawing upon their very life forces

the first of the New Bloods, Layla's a tough-as-nails space "Freelance Peacekeeping Agent" working for L.E.G.I.O.N., given the unenviable task of keeping Lobo on-mission as he, her and a bunch of redshirts explore the seemingly derelict parasite vessel in search of space pirates, only to face the Parasites themselves in deadly combat. Layla gets sucked by Slodd, but is saved by Lobo, and being one of the few aliens with a metagene, quickly develops powers similar to that of the Main Man, enabling her to survive the explosion Lobo causes to disable the ship and the twosome's being blown out into the vacuum of space as a result. Layla helps contain the parasite threat, and makes a few more appearances in in L.E.G.I.O.N. and Lobo's own series before vanishing into comics limbo

A good kid from Metropolis' Suicide Slum, Tom O'Brien had to drop out of school with all the part time jobs needed to support his mom and kid brother Petey after his dad passed away. Unfortunately, one night while on his way home from one such job, Tom came upon and tried to stop what he thought was an assault, only to come upon Angon as she was feeding and peckish for seconds.

Luckily for tom, he was only mostly dead, the trauma triggering his latent metagene as his near corpse was disposed of in the sewer tunnels of on the borders of Underworld, Metropolis' underground community of outcasts, homeless and DNAliens, and he awoke looking like he stepped out of a clive barker story, his body covered in razor sharp blades amidst a pile of dead bodies and his memories a blur (the last two a common trend among awoken New Bloods). in his initial confusion he ran into Steel, who was looking for him (the O'Brien's being his upstairs neighbors at the time), but they quickly clarified things and joined forces to save Petey, who had also stumbled on Angon while looking for his brother. afterwards, the newly dubbed Edge agreed to help track down and fight the Parasites, hoping there was a way to become normal again, but not quite putting out of mind that he was now Petey's new favorite superhero

Once the Bloodlines crossover ended, Edge quickly vanished into comics limbo, but some say he's still out there, scaring the scum of the earth off the streets of Suicide Slum

a gym teacher at an inner Gotham City school, the man who would be Joe Public was driven to vigilantism after some of his students died of a drug overdose, and he was bent on bringing their dealer's supplier down. Unfortunately for him, this got in the way of Batman's own drug bust, and the Caped Crusader was all too quick to point out that while Joe's heart was in the right place, he was woefully underskilled for the task, a fact proven when while trying to follow up on the escaped drugrunner, Joe was captured by the Parasite Gemir, who took him back to its temporary nest before feeding on him. When Batman and fellow vigilante Pagan came upon Gemir's larder and still living victims, they were outmatched by the beast, saved only by Joe Public's awakening as a New Blood, sapping everyone's strength to turn himself into a powerhouse strong, fast and tough enough to drive off Gemir. But regardless of this victory, Joe realized in the immediate aftermath that Batman was right, and he'd leave the crime fighting to the professionals, although he'd make periodic returns to the costumed life during the Knightfall and Contagion Bat-events, when even the dark knight himself was overwhelmed by the chaos

Haha, wow- these guys are truly awful. DC always had this weird thing where every time they tried to ape an industry trend, they would do an even worse job than the worst Marvel or Image hacks were doing. These guys are a CLASSIC example of that- not only did they go over like a wet fart, but they were trounced out of comics within years, nobody ever mattered (aside from Tommy Monaghan), and most of them were killed off-handedly in other books. One of the few books to mention the whole "Parasite" thing after the fact was a JLA/Hitman story, in which the Flash casually explained to Tommy how dangerous their job actually was, and how most newbies are unprepared for it- most of the New Blood types are said to have died pretty quickly.

well, they had a decent, if forgotten shelf life, up until Infinite crisis, when a chunk of them were killed by Superboy Prime in the last issue bloodbath. a couple more were maimed as part of Dr. Mid-Nite's story in JSA Classified, and another three were taken out in a one-shot starring Prometheus

As far as the "Bloodlines" characters go...yeah, they just about ALL went over like with a big "THUD", except for Hitman; most of them were pretty poorly conceived, all told-and yes, I think they were DC's attempts at some of the 90s era "edgy" Marvel mutants and Image "sketchpad" characters which were the wave at the time. And DC botched them miserably, to the extent Garth Ennis (who pretty much despises much of the genre anyway) mocked them relentlessly in Tommy Monaghan's book, making sure to distance the protagonist from his own origins. DC pretty much washed their hands of the whole bunch by the time COIE rolled around.

A few weren't so bad, or even showed a little promise-Argus, who got some play as a supporting character in Wally West's book, Loose Cannon wasn't half-bad, and Sparx featured in one of my all-time favorite pure "fun" comics, Superboy and the Ravers. But yeah, none of them have popped up in years, with most being summarily killed off or otherwise incapacitated.

DC has a tendency to do this over and over again, to failed batches of characters-lots of Infinity Inc. members (both versions of the team), the Global Guardians, the various supernatural teams they've trotted out from time to time...I think the only ones to escape this and just be forgotten are the Young Heroes in Love cast. Maybe NOBODY remembers them enough to destroy them in ink and paper form.

    All my best.

I'm generally of the opinion that at least half of the New Blood concepts worked just fine (possibly even 75% of them), and would make for perfectly good heroes with some tweaking. Joe Public, for instance, has a pretty cool and unique power, and I like the idea of a patriotic-themed, super-powered hero operating in Gotham, much like how Superman often had non-powered heroes like Steel and Guardian helping him out.

Edge is one of the ones who doesn't work, IMO tho. He's just . . . he's a porcupine. His power is that he's covered in knives. He looks silly and his powers aren't interesting. To me, he'd be a prime candidate to have his powers removed and retire to a happy, normal life.
