SOOOO many of the characters' names were UBER-90s, clearly aping their Marvel and Image counterparts: I mean, Ballistic, Edge, Gunfire, Hook, Jamm, Loose Cannon, Nightblade, Razorsharp, Shadowstryke....and their team was the "Blood Pack"! But yeah, DC did a LOT of disposable super-teams over the years, with their members quickly disposed of or just never seen again-New Guardians, Primal Force, Scare Tactics, Team Titans, the Wanderers, and probably a half dozen others I missed. Marvel does a lot better in this regard-they did the "mass new character" debuts a few times, but usually these heroes and villains get an appearance or two apiece in annuals or crossover tie-in on-shots, then are gone unless they really "pop" with readers. Odd.

    All my best.

    I believe that's actually because they're creator-owned, so ... <shrugs>

arguably the third most successful of the New Bloods on account of recurring appearances in Mark Waid's run on Flash, Nick Kelly was an FBI agent working undercover in the Keystone City mob under the alias Nick Kovac, up until he and the crew his was with ran afoul of the parasites and Nick was the only survivor due to his activated metagene. thinking the aliens earthly monsters created by the group known as the Combine, Nick used his status as presumed dead to don the identity of Argus and helped Flash drive the creatures from Keystone. Argus later proved invaluable in the fight against the Taker, his enhanced senses enabling him to mark the monster's weak points and vital organs. Afterwards, with the parasites dealt with, Argus stayed in Keystone, focussing on the city's organized crime groups and others beneath Flash's notice. during this time, Argus learned he could regenerate, thus explaining future appearances despite gruesome injuries

special note: as a number of New Bloods gained a general, all-around enhanced physicality, my builds will incorporate this as a basic template. so if any new blood is stronger/tougher than you remember, that's my explanation

the only New Blood to pre-date the Bloodlines Crossover (but just barely), Sasha Green was the newly hired personal fitness trainer and martial arts sparring partner for Lex Luthor Jr., unaware (like everyone else) that her boss was in fact the original Luthor in a new, cloned body, posing as his own long-lost son. Obsessing over Superman's seeming death against the monster Doomsday, Luthor was enraged when Sasha managed to knock him down during a sparring match, in front of both Supergirl and Lois Lane, and that night, Luthor stalked and strangled Sasha with his own two hands, not just for revenge, but to prove a point born from his obsession, that now there was no Superman to stop him. he quietly covered the whole thing up, arranging for her body to be found and someone to take the blame, another day in the life of Lex Luthor

Unfortunately for him, Sasha's story doesn't end there.

the night before Sasha's body was to be discovered in the Metropolis dump, it was found by the Parasite Gemir, whom, being a greedy little sort, had himself a quick snack before moving on. and somehow, this brought Sasha back to life, albeit confused and her memory a blur as was common to awoken New Bloods. a matter not helped when her power manifested, to incapacitate others with a touch, stealing their memories and appearance in the process. When Luthor learned Sasha wasn't near as dead as he liked, he was forced to ally with the Cyborg, one of the four would-be Superman successors to retrieve her, and seemingly sent her back to her parents via private helicopter, only to place an assassin on board to re-kill the girl and make it look like she died when the chopper crashed in a 'terrible accident'. Unfortunately for the assassin, she made skin contact with Sasha, and whom with her greater strength and newly absorbed killing skills, turned the tables and walked away the crash's only unknown survivor, her amalgamated identity calling herself Myriad, and deciding contract killing was as good a career as any

Sasha would only appear once more, Giving Tommy "Hitman" Monnaghan a ride to the final battle with the parasites before driving off into comics limbo. but her role wasn't finished. Her initial murder by Luthor was investigated by Lois Lane, and one of the key factors in bringing him down during the "Fall of Metropolis" storyline the following year

hailing from Coast City and the son of a once-famous race car driver, Nik Mayak was in the passenger seat when his father accepted an impromptu street race and drove the car off dead man's curve, killing himself and paralysing Nik from the waist down. devoting himself to physical therapy in the hopes of becoming the first paraplegic driver to win the Indy 500, Nik's dreams were again thrown off course when he was the only survivor of the Parasite Lissek, who'd picked his hospital ward as a feeding ground, surviving the experience because he'd gained high end regeneration. Unfortunately, this miraculous survival turned to ash, because Nik came home to find Lissek had also butchered his surviving family. in his rage and grief, Nik snapped, donning a homemade costume, a hasty collection of knives, and the supranym Nightblade, and wound up aiding Green Lantern in driving Lissek from the city. Nightblade, still reeling from everything that night, turned down Lantern's offer of mentorship, and his choice to help end the Parasite threat kept him out of town when Coast City was destroyed by Mongul mere days later.

afterwards, Nightblade would join the short-lived Blood Pack, and years later, fight in the battle of metropolis, where he was incinerated by Superboy-Prime

Paraplegic race car driver turned... Knife Guy? Seems legit.

It's curious how many of these guys have "Tragic Backstories" that really just go nowhere because the character is dropped- Myriad in particular seems strange, given how she'd have a grudge against Luthor. Is this another one of those "Superman Writer Switches" that saw the creative team swapped around, thus dropping the old characters?

Argus has a needlessly "Bad-Ass '90s Anti-Hero" design for somebody whose concept seems more "Generic Super-Hero".

Never have a vendetta against a character who's more popular/sells more comics than you. There's just no future in it.

remember that this is smack in the middle of Superman's Death & Return arc. Dan Jurgens is the head writer on the Superman titles at the moment, and will be for another 6 years. I'd say that they created Myriad with some potential, then ignored her because the Sasha Green murder case was the more important long-term story

A Gotham City cop, officer Kevin Mao was among those assigned to a special task force by Commissioner Gordon to investigate the murder sprees caused by the Parasites. Unfortunately, McCain, the Detective in charge of Mao's squad was a racist, overconfident douchecanoe, who led his men into a massacre at the teeth and claws of Angon, of which only Mao survived due to his metagene activing, covering him in a light red insectile carapace (pinkish in early appearances, but corrected to a more solid red later on). a closested ubernerd, Mao swore to avenge those good cops (and technically McCain), took a bunch of heavy weapons from the GCPD armory and convinced Gordon to let him help Batman on this one (both of them unaware that by this point, Bruce Wayne had been crippled by Bane and it was now the former anti-hero Azrael filling in under the cowl). Together, Ballastic and Batman defeated Agnon, even thinking her destroyed in a fiery explosion. Unaware of the beast's survival, Ballistic chose to become a 'solo operator' like the (substitute) dark knight, albeit a hero for hire in order to pay for keeping his gear up to date.

After helping defeat the Parasite threat in the final battle, Ballistic head out west to join the Blood Pack, before vanishing into comics limbo, and being killed by Superboy Prime in Infinite Crisis
