    Post Certatus - Homebrew Gladiatorial RPG. Seeking feedback.

    Firstly I'm not sure if I'm posting in the appropriate place. I've based my homebrew system on the AGE system using the Dragon Age rulebooks as my reference, but it's so changed it's almost unrecognisable from the source and completely unrelated in theme. I figured since my understanding of Fantasy AGE is that it's basically made for homebrewing, I thought I'd try here.

    My system I've titled "Certatus - Gladiatorial RPG", and I've pretty much drafted all the mechanics except for the character backgrounds and all the lore out in a google doc. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing

    I had the idea based on an old PS2 game I loved called "Gladius". Gladiatorial schools travelling to different nations trying to win the championship, with a world-ending plot threading around and through it all. Many of the system tweaks I've made and the lore I have in mind are intended to recreate the feel of that game.

    Major changes I've made are simplified abilities, more classes, "grandmaster" level talents instead of specialisations, and an overhaul to magic and mana use. I'm also toying with the idea of giving each background a special ability to further distinguish them.

    Things I'm unsure of the most are class balance (I think the Medium class may be too strong, or at least the Heavy not strong enough to match) and spell balance. I very rarely play magic classes in any system so I have less frame of reference.

    This is my first attempt at homebrewing anything, let alone modifying an entire system, so I recognise it could be seriously flawed. I don't have the experience to spot what could potentially go wrong, which is why I'm seeking feedback. Please be as harsh a critic as you like, I want to learn and make it better!

    Thanks.

    Where did the Perception ability go?

    I rolled it into Cunning.

    "Resolve" incorporates Willpower and Communication.

    Mainly a personal preference thing, 6 feels like a more manageable amount for stats.

    Thanks. I learned to play RPG's through D&D so I guess that's where it comes from.

    First, a lot of the class benefits call out other classes (ex. Light having a bonus against Heavy), are you focusing on PvP or are NPCs going to be built using the same classes as the players? I am getting a definite 'For Honor' feel from this document.

    I like the Ability and Focus consolidation. Some are a stretch but they fit nonetheless and you wisely balanced this with limiting what classes have as their primary abilities.

    The thing that stuck out for me, and admittedly it is a small thing, are the names for the classes. They are very indicative but somewhat generic. I would suggest a readdressing these and if you are open to it, I may have a few suggestions. If you want to stick with a Roman theme, a quick Google search came up with possible alternatives:

    Light = Dimachaeri
    Medium = Mirmillones
    Heavy = Hoplomachi or Samnite
    Support = Saggitarii
    Arcane = Magus

    Otherwise, I noticed you have a couple of backgrounds that may be a little more culturally specific. If you want something a little more universal, I would go with English words that are a little more flavorful while keeping with the descriptiveness you have already:

    Light = Skirmisher
    Medium = Man-At-Arms
    Heavy = Dreadnought or Juggernaut
    Support = Marksman or Sharpshooter
    Arcane = Magus or any other word for mage like Sorcerer, Wizard, etc.

    Star Wars: AGE of the Empire: An ever-expanding adaption of the Star Wars universe utilizing the AGE ruleset and compatible with the Fantasy Age Basic Rulebook.

    Expanded Classes Playtest: Adding the Bard, Swashbuckler, and Templar classes. As well as introducing archetypes that gives players different options from the start of play.

    Mythic AGE: An epic fantasy campaign setting inspired by Greek mythology.

    Hey Otog, Thanks for looking it over.

    I do have plans for various beasts (wolves, lions, etc) and the occasional undead for dark summoners to raise, but yes primarily (at least the way I'm planning a future campaign) it will be vs NPC's with the same classes. I like the idea of the system being robust enough to be used for PVP too though, and I'd considered as a way to playtest it would be to run it as two small PVP teams against each other at a convention game or something, when I'm ready.

    Thanks. As I said in an earlier post I feel like 6 is a more manageable number of stats. I also felt - particularly in the case of perception and cunning that they were stats that tended to be similarly either both important or both irrelevant to any particular build. So it made sense to roll them into one.

    I see your point, and I like some of your suggestions. I worry about making them sound too roman though, as there are four distinct cultures involved. Then again, it could be the roman inspired culture was the one that started the gladiatorial traditions, so the other cultures adopted their names for things. I'll think about it and let you know what I come up with. Either way I'll definitely use Magus, thanks.

    Welp, after the huge and enjoyable distraction that was BotW and the less enjoyable ME:A, I've finally come back to this as I'm running a game in it for a few people on Tabletop Day. I'm pretty much done, and I'm calling this the first draft. The backgrounds, history/lore of the world, and the deities are all fully fleshed out now, and I took Otug's advice and renamed the classes:

    Light is now Provocator
    Medium is now Murmillo
    Heavy is now Samnite
    Support is now Velite
    Arcane is now Magus

    As before, I welcome any criticism, as I barely know what I'm doing haha

    EDIT: added link to sig for ease of clicking
