[Lara's Treasure] Ridley, Mother Brain, Kraid, Metroid, Midoriya, OC: Dusk, the Legendary Cowgirl

Herein you'll find all kinds of treasures: the strange and the scientific, the esoteric and the arcane. I've gathered them up from all corners of the globe and a few places that don't quite fit that description. Here myths and monsters meet men and women or forces from beyond this world. Come join me on an adventure and there's no telling what we'll find!

I'm back again with more builds, rules options and detailed, exciting scenarios. The main option I'll exercise with every build will be the lack of Power Level; I have eschewed this mechanic entirely and haven't looked back. This might make the builds somewhat less useful from a "going to yoink this for tonight's game!" standpoint, but it should be pretty easy to ballpark the numbers within a PL framework if you want to use them.

As always, where I specialize is in video game builds, and I like to think I'm the best in the business at those. With a heavy focus on the women of gaming and fiction, you'll find lots of ladies, dangers, and dangerous ladies in these builds, and I hope a lot of fun rules options and things you fondly remember. Like 8 Eyes. Remember that game for the NES? I'm going to be statting up Orin and Cutrus at some point. Now where else are ya gonna find that?

    Time & Distance

Credit to Taliesin for these rules.

HOUSE RULES #1: RANKS & MEASURES
    Time and Doubling
Ten doublings approximate a thousandfold increase—this is pretty useful for metric units and for units that do not otherwise jump in unusual intervals (distance is fine once you reach miles). Six doublings approximate a sixtyfold increase—this is particularly useful for time, with its conversions of sixty seconds to the minute and sixty minutes to the hour. This also means that to really take advantage of the ease with which doubling fits into the time ranks, we need to start at one second and replace the 6 second rank with either 4 or 8 seconds. For the record, DC Heroes used 4 seconds per phase.

    Humanocentric Distance
We actually haven’t removed the 30 feet benchmark but instead altered the 6 feet measure to 8 feet. This places the human average height somewhere in the middle of the 4 to 8 feet range; the middle of that range isn’t 6 feet but actually 4 times the square root of 2, or about 5 feet, 8 inches—closer to the median human height if you include both genders. A strict doubling from 30 feet would not yield a 1 mile benchmark but keeps a lot of the familiar intermediate ranks. Using 1.5 and 3 miles before doubling from thereon out isn’t terribly cumbersome, but the higher values would be unfamiliar to those using a 1 mile starting point.

The old DC Heroes progression actually starts from 10 feet at AP (or rank) 0, and yields 1 mile at rank 9 and 2 miles at rank 10. This sets the typical hero in the 5-10 feet range, which is a lot less humanocentric, but expected given the wide range of values produced by doubling.

    Rank Time Distance
    -5 1/8 second 3 inches
    -4 1/4 second 6 inches
    -3 1/2 second 1 foot
    -2 1 second 2 foot
    -1 2 second 4 feet
    0 4 seconds 8 feet
    1 8 seconds 15 feet
    2 15 seconds 30 feet
    3 30 seconds 60 feet
    4 1 minute 120 feet
    5 2 minutes 250 feet
    6 4 minutes 500 feet
    7 8 minutes 1000 feet
    8 15 minutes 2000 feet
    9 30 minutes 4000 feet
    10 1 hour 1.5 miles
    11 2 hours 3 miles
    12 4 hours 6 miles
    13 8 hours 12 miles
    14 16 hours 25 miles
    15 1.5 days 50 miles
    16 3 days 100 miles
    17 1 week 200 miles
    18 2 weeks 400 miles
    19 1 month 800 miles
    20 2 months 1500 miles
    21 4 months 3000 miles
    22 8 months 6000 miles
    23 1.5 years 12000 miles
    24 3 years 24000 miles
    25 6 years 50000 miles
    26 12 years 100,000 miles
    27 25 years 200,000 miles
    28 50 years 400,000 miles
    29 100 years 800,000 miles
    30 200 years 1.5 million miles

    Density

Credit to Taliesin for these rules.

    HOUSE RULES #2: DENSITY

    DENSITY
    Action: Free
    Range: Personal
    Duration: Sustained
    Cost: 4 points per rank

You can temporarily increase your mass, gaining Strength and Toughness.

Each rank of Density adds 1 rank to your mass and adds 1 to your Strength and Toughness. The Toughness gained from Density is Impervious.

    Flaws
Immobile: Using Density causes you to be too heavy to move from your location, causing you to be immobile as long as the effect is maintained. If you are completely unable to move, then you are defenseless as well, increasing the value of this flaw to -3 cost per rank. If you are merely vulnerable as well as immobile, then you can combine Immobile with Distracting for -2 cost per rank. -1 cost per rank

    Growth

Credit to Taliesin for these rules.

    HOUSE RULES #3: GROWTH

    GROWTH
    Action: Free
    Range: Personal
    Duration: Sustained
    Cost: 3 points per rank

Each rank of Growth adds 1 to your Strength and Stamina (constructs add 1 rank to Strength and Toughness if they lack Stamina) and 1 rank to your mass.

Every 3 ranks of Growth increases your size rank by 1 (ordinary humans start out at size rank -2), which also increases your reach (your reach is equal to your size rank) and speed by 1 rank (you start at speed rank 0). Each increase in size rank applies a -1 penalty to your active defenses and on your attack checks, a -2 penalty to Stealth checks, and a +2 bonus to Intimidation.

You may want to spread the active defense and attack penalties across three ranks of Growth. For instance, apply a -1 to close attacks at rank 1, a -1 to ranged attacks at rank 2, and the -1 to active defenses at rank 3, and so forth in the same order at higher ranks. Otherwise, Growth should be bought three ranks at a time in order to maintain a balanced progression.

    Shrinking

Credit to Taliesin for these rules.

    HOUSE RULES #4: SHRINKING

    SHRINKING
    Action: Free
    Range: Personal
    Duration: Sustained
    Cost: 3 points per rank

Each rank of Shrinking reduces your size rank by 1, which also decreases your reach (your reach is equal to your size rank), your speed by 1 rank (you start at speed 0), and your mass rank by 3. Add your Shrinking rank to your active defenses and attack checks. Apply a +4 bonus to Stealth checks and a -2 penalty to Intimidation checks for every rank of Shrinking.

    FLAWS
Reduced Strength: Normally, you retain your normal Strength when shrunk. If you have this Flaw, you are proportionally weaker when you decrease your size. Subtract 3 ranks of Strength for every rank of Shrinking. This Flaw does not pay back its full value because reduced Strength imposes a diminishing penalty at higher ranks. -1 cost per rank

"A famous explorer once said, that the extraordinary is in what we do, not who we are. I'd finally set out to make my mark; to find adventure. But instead adventure found me. In our darkest moments, when life flashes before us, we find something; Something that keeps us going. Something that pushes us."

Knowledge: Lara seeks out knowledge of the world's mysteries, driven by the same inquisitive spirit as her parents.
Enemy: The Solarii, minions of the Sun Queen, and the supernatural wrath of the island itself.
Relationship: Lara is close to most of The Endurance's crew, but especially Samantha.

    HISTORY
Prodigal child of the well-known Croft family, Lara lived up to her father's name as an archaeologist. Graduating from the academy at 21, Lara set out on the Endurance with her friend Samantha Nishimura and family friend Conrad Roth, along with a party of explorers and scientists. They sought the mythical island of Yamatai, home of Himiko the Sun Queen who was said to wield mystical powers. Thanks to Lara's calculations, they searched where no one else had: in the middle of the chaotic Dragon's Triangle. A shipwreck stranded them on an island before they could find Yamatai ... or so they thought.

Captured by an unknown enemy, Lara escaped and explored the island in search of her shipmates. She discovered an unfolding mystery related to some religious figure and a huge cult living on the island. Led by a man called Matthias, the Solarii worshiped the Sun Queen and sought out a new vessel for her spirit, in the hopes that they might escape the island once Himiko lived again. Lara found relics of their long habitation as she negotiated their traps and villages, even fought against Himiko's Stone Guard, immortal warriors led by monstrous "oni". Forced to fight for her freedom and her friends, Lara discovered the secrets of Himiko, slew Matthias and destroyed the Sun Queen.

In the aftermath, young Lara Croft found that her desire to explore and learn the hidden truths of the world had ignited and left her more determined than ever.

    PERSONALITY
Lara is an optimistic young girl, initially unsure in her ability to endure the horrors of Yamatai but determined to save her friends. She is a highly skilled archaeologist and a fearless explorer, fascinated by the secrets of the ancient world. When confronted with challenges, Lara analyzes them and trusts her instincts to help find the answers.

    ABILITIES & RESOURCES
Brilliant and well-educated, Lara possesses a natural talent for archaeology and other sciences. Her instincts are sharp and she is both quick-witted and quick on her feet. Though young, her knowledge and years in the field makes her a great survivalist. Lara's regular exercise leaves her in good shape, and an inherent toughness lets her weather the rigors of exploration. Her father and Captain Roth taught her how to hunt and shoot; combined with her quick eye and strong instincts, Lara makes a capable combatant when she's forced to fight.

In her adventures on Yamatai, Lara acquired a variety of survival gear. For her bow, she fashioned fire arrows and makeshift rope arrows allowing her to reach distant surfaces. A climbing axe aids her in combat and in exploration, while firearms taken from the Solarii give her weapons to use against the cult.

Justice: Samus fights not just for bounties, but for revenge against Space Pirates and out of desire to stop such injustices.
Enemy: Space Pirates, particularly Zebesian pirates. Also, at various points: Metroids. She harbors a special enmity with the draconic Ridley.
Reputation: Samus is known throughout many galaxies and her name is feared.

    HISTORY
Samus' history is long and troubled, full of conflict and hardship. She was born on a human colony called K-2L. At some point in her childhood, the birdlike Chozo came to K-2L to trade with the colonists. An elder Chozo called Old Bird taught young Samus much wisdom while the Chozo remained. Unfortunately, not long after the Chozo departed, Space Pirates led by the draconic Ridley attacked the colony and slaughtered nearly everyone. Only Samus survived. The Chozo returned in response to the distress signal, in time to save Samus from exposure. They took her into their care, infused her with Chozo DNA and crafted for her the Power Suit, one of the greatest technological wonders in the galaxy.

Trained by the Chozo, Samus became an athlete without peer, augmented by her Power Suit into a one-woman army. She eventually left the Chozo to pursue other goals across the universe, and at one point joined the Federation Police. Samus encountered the Space Pirates again several times, even after leaving the Federation Police to become a private bounty hunter.

Her first great mission saw her employed to fight the Space Pirate leader Mother Brain, a corrupted Chozo creation, and dismantle their operations. The Pirates attempted to use the Metroids on planet Zebes to create an army of deadly aliens, but Samus infiltrated their base and destroyed it from within. She slew the Pirate leadership, including giant Kraid and Mother Brain, as well as taking revenge on Ridley.

That would not be the last time she fought the Space Pirates, and even their leadership. Mother Brain was revived and restored her operations before Samus returned and destroyed her at the cost of the last Metroid's life. Ridley also returned many times in cyborg or clone form, and other Pirate operations sought to harness the dread power of Phazon, a deadly substance inimical to life. Samus battled her way through the Pirates and encountered Dark Samus, a Phazon-born doppelganger. In a final epic conflict, Samus destroyed Dark Samus and Phazon both along with Phaaze, their planet of origin.

Samus continues to hunt for the most dangerous criminals and aliens in the galaxy, a legendary name both feared and respected by friend and foe alike.

    PERSONALITY
Samus is a reticent woman, spending weeks or months without uttering a single word to another soul. She is humorless in her pursuit of mission objectives or bounties, and particularly calculating when bringing down Space Pirates. Samus is somewhat of a lonely hunter, alone in the universe, with the Chozo seemingly extinct and her family long destroyed. The few people to which she gets attached invariably get destroyed in the conflicts that consume her life, so Samus remains cold and distant to those who cross her path. This only adds to her mystique and the legends surrounding her.

    ABILITIES & RESOURCES
Infused with Chozo DNA and put through extreme training regimens, Samus is a super-athlete. She is incredibly fast and agile, with heightened senses and reflexes faster than any human's. She can perform tremendous acrobatic leaps and exert herself heavily for hours where others would fail. The Chozo trained Samus in a wide variety of weapons and gear, allowing her to pilot anything, adapt to new technologies and understand the mechanics behind the things she encounters. Samus' great intelligence and quick wits combined with her physical and martial prowess make her by far the most dangerous woman in the universe.

Re: Lara's Treasures: Rules, Lara Croft, Samus Aran

Another legendary lovely lady of gaming, often referred to as the First Lady of Gaming. It's Samus in her base form, with the Chozo Power Suit coming up next. Then I'll do a third sheet, with the power suit added in.

I might update the sheet to show the changes brought about by the events of Metroid: Fusion, as well.
