-Magestic, long-legged animals, the Gruiformes making up the Cranes and their relatives are quite distinctive from each other. There is also the Order of Herons and their relatives, such as Egrets, Storks, Ibises, Spoonbills and the carrion-eating Maribou Stork. Of a similar nature are the famous pink Flamingos, gaining pink feathers from their shrimp-based diet. They're basically like Large Waterbirds but with no Swimming, as they mostly stand on shorelines and attack smaller animals, rather than dive in after them.

Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their wings & beaks to easily manipulate objects. Though Ravens can be taught to MIMIC HUMAN SPEECH. In deep, Satanic voices.
Addiction (Shiny Things)- Ravens like to collect shiny, reflective objects.

    Total: Abilities: -10 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 4 (32)

    Era: Modern Day
    Range: North America & Eurasia.
Stereotypes: Dark, mysterious & forboding. Often flat-out evil.
    Colouring: Black
Size: Up to 30 inches long (1-5 lbs.)

    Diet: Omnivorous
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Corvids are actually pretty cool, despite being ultra-common, standard-issue birds in many ways. They are by far the most-intelligent Bird species in the world, with problem-solving skills akin to Great Apes, and brains capable of understanding numerous lessons. It took people YEARS to uncover the depths of their brilliance, though they always had a reputation for cleverness and ingenuity. It turns out that Corvids (Crows, Ravens, Magpies, etc.) don't just succeed in laboratory tests- they EXCEED expectations. When two Crows were given different sticks with which to perform some kind of tool-using test, the Crow with the faulty stick observed the successful one, then BENT HIS STICK INTO THE APPROPRIATE SHAPE, allowing him to succeed as well. They are also the only vertebrate other than humans to be able to communicate "Displacement" to others (Ants & Bees are the others)- essentially "this _____ is over ______".

-And yes, they can FREAKING TALK, and in a spectacularly-disturbing, deep-pitched Hell Voice.
-Ravens are quite big and tough (Crows & Magpies are much smaller), but are still preyed upon by larger Birds of Prey like Eagles, Hawks & Owls, who are much more-capable at killing. However, Ravens are generally capable of fending off predators, as they are highly-gregarious and very intelligent, and will readily harass anything that threatens them.

    Falcons & Hawks

    CLASS- FALCONIFORMES:
-These are the Birds of Prey, featuring in myth and legend. Of course, relationships weren't always great with them (many are endangered- even ones we LIKE), as all of our pollutants and garbage tends to mess up the air as fast as it messes up the water. The Class has five Orders- Falcons, Eagles/Hawks, the Condors, the Secretary Birds, and the Ospreys. The Owls are a separate pair of Orders- the Strigiformes. All of them are known for their keen eyesight, sharp talons, and hooked beaks, ideal for stabbing and sheering meat. Most of them aren't dangerous to humans- they're physically quite small and weak, and don't naturally hunt or eat people, but they can still cause horrific wounds.

-Oh yeah, and they're considered by most half-decent scientists to be the closest living descendents on the DINOSAURS- that mightiest and coolest of all animal groups. So they definitely have that going for them. In retrospect, it's kind of hard to imagine why it took them so long- have you SEEN the feet of an Emu?

-PL-wise, they're mid-level, around the Dogs, but leaning towards accuracy rather than sheer damage. Most don't do more damage than a normal human's punches, but they're a fair bit scarier. Most of their prey is small, such as fish (often dive-bombed straight into the water, like Ospreys do), small birds (pigeons & ducks), or carrion. Some especially large creatures (like the Eagles) can attack and kill creatures as large as Deer or Mountain Goats!

    Falcon & Osprey.

    PEREGRINE FALCON (Falco peregrinus)
    Role:
    Fastest Animal Around
    PL 5 (62)- Minion Rank 7, Sidekick Rank 13
    Normal Version:
    PL 2-3
    STRENGTH -3 STAMINA -1 AGILITY 4
    FIGHTING 4 DEXTERITY 0
    INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE -3

    Skills:
    Acrobatics 6 (+10)
    Athletics 6 (+3)
Close Combat (Natural Weapons) 4 (+8)
    Expertise (Survival) 6 (+6)
    Perception 10 (+10)

    Advantages:
Evasion, Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Natural Weapons), Improved Hold

    Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 3 (Extended, Ultra & Low-Light Vision) [3]
    "Natural Weapons- Talons & Beak" Strength-Damage +4 [4]

    Flight 8 (120 mph) (Flaws: Winged) [8]

"Tiny Size" Shrinking 8 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) -- (1 foot) [17]
    (-2 Strength, +4 Defenses, +8 Stealth, -4 Intimidation, -1 Speed)

    Offense:
    Unarmed +4 (-3 Damage, DC 12)
    Natural Weapons +8 (+1 Damage, DC 16)
    Initiative +4

    Defenses:
    Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness -1, Fortitude +3, Will +4

    Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their talons to easily manipulate objects.

    Total: Abilities: -2 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 12 (62)

    Era: Modern
Range: All land masses but Antarctica
    Stereotypes: Speedy. Voiceless predators.
    Colouring: Brown, yellow & white
Size: Up to 20 inches long (1-4 lbs.)
    Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Birds (especially pigeons), small mammals
Tactics: Chase at high-speeds and disable, or dive-bomb from a "stoop".

-The Falcons are in the middle-ground of Birds of Prey as far as size goes, but the Peregrine is an iconic flier- the fastest flying animal in history, reaching speeds of up to 200 mph in a stoop (dive), hunting down other birds like lightning from the sky. It does lethal damage with its beak and talons, crippling the animals, that must soon land, and are thus easier prey. This Falcon is PL 4.5 in most of it's balances, having terrific accuracy and defensive power because of it's relatively small size and natural agility. It's Natural Weapons are kind of a "waste" of points, but I felt that since they're Strength-based in real life, I'd go with a Strength-Damage instead of a straight-up Damage effect, which is cheaper, but goes against reality.

    Similar Animals:
    * Naturally, most of these are rather slower than the Peregrine, but still very fast.
Osprey: One of the cooler-sounding Bird's names, they're about the size of Falcons. It is the most widespread Bird of Prey, living everywhere but Antarctica and the very far North and South.
Goshawk: A kind of weak name, but they look cool enough, with dark stripes all over their feathers.
Eagles: Numerous Eagles are quite small, including the Bateleur Eagle, Fish Eagle & Snake Eagle, all of Africa.
Kestrels: Very small birds of Africa & Eurasia.
Secretary Bird: A distinctive-looking, flightless bird with long legs.
Vultures: The Egyptian Vulture and the Turkey Vulture (called the "Buzzard" in parts of the U.S.) are about this size, but are weaker fighters. Better Extended Scent, though.
Hawks: Hawks are typically-small Birds of Prey, with the Red-Tailed Hawk being famous in North America. It's particualr "KEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!" cry is usually used in the media to represent the Bald Eagle, due to the epic sound.

    Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their talons to easily manipulate objects.

    Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 21 / Defenses: 15 (60)

    Era: Modern
Range: North America, Europe & Asia
    Stereotypes: Regal & proud.
    Colouring: Dark brown & tawny
Size: Up to 35 inches long (6-14 lbs.)
    Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Mountain Goats, rabbits, rodents, tortoises, small birds
Tactics: Dive-bomb from above, possibly dragging off cliffs!

-Golden Eagles are frickin' sweet. Not like those lame BALD Eagles (sorry Americans, but the Beaver is a way cooler national symbol :P), who just eat dead fish and other carrion all the time, and just stealing other birds' kills. Golden Eagles? They take stuff the size of human children (and probably COULD take them if they wanted to), and are even used in WOLF HUNTS, running down even apex predators in other animal Orders! And really- how majestic can you get? Giant, super-noble predators with the most dignified expression in history. Suck it, Bald Eagle, the Golden Eagle has it all over you.

-Speaking of elite hunting tactics- check THIS crap out!:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VklTs-Tid_I&feature=fvst. Yes, it's literally grabbing the goats, and then THROWING THEM OFF A CLIFF, to eat the flattened creature at the bottom. That is NASTY. Though I can't find any record of fatalities on behalf of Golden Eagles, that is not for lack of trying.

-At PL 5, this is equal to the Wolf, and a notch higher than most mountain-dwelling herbivores, though its small size means it usually hunts the babies or little ones (like Goats), not Bighorn Sheep. It's about 14 lbs., but you could take out a normal-size human with this Elite, boosted-accuracy version (for an even MORE elite Sidekick version, you can knock up its accuracy to +10 or 11, making it a PL 6-7 creature, which is a bit beyond the natural type).

    Similar Animals:
    * Similar stats can be used for most of the Eagle family, all being around this size. The Harpy Eagle is even BIGGER, a South American Sloth-eater, the Martial Eagle lives in Africa, the Red Kite has a forked tail and looks pretty sinister, and the Bald Eagle mostly eats dead stuff, etc.
Harpy Eagle: Even BIGGER- it's a South American Sloth-eater. The Steller's Sea Eagle and Phillipines Eagle are of similar scale.
Martial Eagle: A big African one.
Red Kite: A sinister-looking bird with a forked tail.
Bald Eagle: Primarily an eater of fish & carrion.

    Re: Jab's Builds!

I lived for a few years in a small city with a surprisingly well-funded zoo, they had penguins, rhinos, and other such things. But my favorite was the raven. As the zoo was incredibly close to home and annual passes were dirt cheap, my young wards and I would visit multiple times a week.

The raven grew to recognize us and always knew it would score some feedcorn when we came. I got to be freidndly with its keeper and she shared all kinds of crazy shenanigans that the bird had gotten into in the long years it had lived in the zoo... Like breaking out of its enclosure at night, winging its way over to the penguins' pond, helping itself to their food, returning to its aviary, and closing the door behind it!

They only discovered this when it had been going on for over a year.

    Re: Jab's Builds!

Not the site that I was looking for (was looking for the dice roller!) but pretty nifty story on a coyote on dog attack and kinda of a nifty device to keep coyotes out of yards.

.. and finding that I can't figure out how to add the film to this post.

    Diet: Carrion
Tactics: Hunting down dead or dying animals and feeding.

-Condors are the largest flying animals in North America, and the Californian variety is critically endangered, with only about 170 animals left. Many Condors & Vultures can use these states, reflecting a less accurate, less lethal predator than the Hawks & Eagles, because most of their prey is already dead. But with an Elite version packing some good accuracy, you can stat up a somewhat-dangerous minion sitting on The Penguin's cane or something. Unlike all other Birds, its sense of smell is PHENOMENAL, and birds like this are used to detect gas leaks (carrion scent is placed into gas mains, so that the birds centre around any leaks they can detect).

Disabled (Scent)- Owls appear to have a terrible sense of smell. Though this has benefits, as they can hunt the Skunk without worry, which very few animals will.

    Total: Abilities: -4 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 12 (50)

    Era: Modern
    Range: North & South America
Stereotypes: Wise & intelligent. Possibly creepy.
    Colouring: Brown & white
Size: Up to 24 inches long (1-6 lbs.)
    Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
    Diet: Small mammals
Tactics: Chase at high-speeds and disable, or dive-bomb from a "stoop".

-Owls are a pretty cool bird in their own right, being night-time hunters designed for flying about in absolute darkness. Stats-wise, they're basically about the size of Falcons & Eagles, mostly around 4-5 lbs. in weight, but lack a bit of Defense comparatively. They DO have Accurate Hearing, though, allowing them to spot and grab the tiniest rodents in absolute darkness. It was thought that it was their eyesight that allowed this, but though they DO have great Night-Vision, it's their ear tufts that allow them to capture prey. They have circular pits from ear-to-eye that are at slightly different sizes to allow the owls to "satellite dish" sounds in an area, and detect the exact position of targets. Owls make so little noise when they fly that advanced technological equipment is required to even SLIGHTLY-observe it.

    Similar Animals:
    * There are a variety of owls, most of whom are either around this size, or much smaller (losing some PL points).
Barn Owl: A pretty iconic-looking species that may have inspired the tale of Mothman.
Snowy Owl: A pretty Arctic predator with enhanced Stealth in wintry conditions.
Grey Owl: The largest species by sheer body length, they're actually quite impressive-looking, but rarely-seen.

-The largest predatory flying bird ever, the Haast's Eagle is an extinct super-predator that frequently hunted animals that are basically fatter Ostriches, so you KNOW they're tough as hell. Seriously, a 30-pound bird that hunts 510-pound birds? That is just plain BAD-ASS, and it means these things are awesome and demand to be statted. There's not a lot to them other than boosting up the strength of a common Eagle, but this makes them much more expensive, and far more dangerous in combat. A PL 7 bird? Yeah, that's pretty horrifying, especially since they can dive-bomb you from the air, do +5 damage (and Power Attack!), and even grapple fairly well for such a small animal. There is a very real chance that these things could have killed and eaten HUMAN CHILDREN.

-Unfortunately, the Haast's Eagle went extinct largely due to human pressures- the Maori people discovered New Zealand, and immediately started hunting the fat, slow, easy-to-kill Moas to extinction within one to two-hundred years' time, leaving the Eagle with no prey to capitalize on. They soon followed them into death. Remember THAT next time someone tries to blame all extinctions on modern society and/or Europeans. Turns out ALL humans are bastards .
