  • arcane archer and complicated swarm powers, how to build it. (2e)

    I wanted to make an archer who used magical cantrips to enhance his weapons.
    Would I a) just buy it as a ranged power and add either a power loss requires weapons, limitation: objects only, or not add either a power loss or a limitation as it is inherent in using a bow or a sword. Say I wanted arrows and a knife that paralysed on contact as an example.
    b) do a touch range attack but triggered by a successful hit, and put the touch range spell on my arrows and knife?
    c) use empower, limitedbjects only.
    d) something else?
    Are hawkeye's trick arrows equipment or device?

    Nasty swarm power
    I wanted to create a demonic swarm NPC that basically injected larvae into people that created another swarm from the body of the . Part of the power I guess has to be duplicate or summon (maybe transform 1 object into another object [person into swarm being]) . How would I show that the larvae need to eat the person to do it? Would it need to be a permanent effect as I am not sure how you come back from that? I guess the swarm creature would/could morph back into the person it ate. Would/could the swarm creature be a duplicate? I know the easy way to do it would be summon/ and not worry about the creepy bits? I guess another way of doing it would be limitation: requires dead body, and make the initial attack drain constitution or fortitude.

    Any thoughts?

    For the first one, I'd probably buy it with Power Loss. And I'd probably make trick arrows Devices unless a player could convince me that they're feasible to put together with a decent workshop.

    For the second one... I'd probably just go for a Summon Effect with a Power Loss requiring dead bodies to do the summoning. If those are rare, it's Limited (-1 Flaw). If, in this world, they're common, we're looking at the realm of Power Loss. I don't know that I could see a PC with this power, though.

        Next question.
        How does it work if you change the duration of instant powers e.g. how does a sustained blast work?

          The effect continues to cause damage as long as you can spend a Free action on it (the book suggests that anything past Concentration should have a reasonable way to remove the effect whether it's true love's kiss to remove a petrification effect or a fire extinguisher to quench the flaming napalm). As usual, you can't "stack" damage, so once you're damaging someone, you're best off moving to the next guy.

            Coincentally, I have an arcne archer in the works on the boards - my character thread has one version and a game I`m applying to has a tweaked version. Neither are the be all and end all definitive version, but it`s an interesting excercise...

            For said Arcane Archer, what abilities are you going for? The +1 magic descriptor (as pointed out to me...) is simply enhanced skill or accurate attack with the magical descriptor, Seeker arrows could be done with homing, and the real trick is Imbue Arrow - unless you`re working with a different idea of an Arcane Archer and want different abilities.

            To me, the appeal of an Arcane Archer is taking touch spells and making them ranged. Nothing stops you from taking a simpler approach and having a ranged damage effect (the arrow) linked to a spell and having alternate effects the same way that you have spells in a magic array.

            As for Hawkeye/ Green Arrow and all those types... Device vs Equipment is a big ol can of worms. It really depends on what you want them to be able to do. Equipment is not going to let him hang convincingly alongside the tope tier heroes. Arrows... I've got missiles... Try denting Iron Man with an equipment level explosive arrow...

            On the other hand, in a street level game, equipment is very appropriate.

            Your swarm power is essentially as suggested, but the exact wording I would use is "limited to available subjects" which is just semantics.

              I might have another way to do the funky arrows.
              Boost 2pp. May affect any trait of a particlar descriptor one at a time. Flaw: objects only.

              Ok... I want a paralysis arrow so.I give the arrow the attack power of paralysis.
              I guess this raises questions of whether a touch range effect on an arrow would still work and whether I would get zapped when I fired the arrow and would the arrow also need a pf:triggered?
              Alternatively how would a ranged attack effect work on an arrow or would I have to drop it's range down to touch range?
              It seems this would give me the ability to ensorcell a single arrow (as a standard action) and fire it next round, unless I spent a HP on it to get another standard action and then I have no frigging idea how it would work.

              Please somebody let me know how this would work.

                I think you are overthinking.

                If you have a ranged effect there is absolutely nothing that requires you to use the full range.
                so... Take a ranged effect, and maybe a quirk to say that beyond five feet requires a bow.

                said quirk is a good variant to devices too.

                people often assume archers use equipment when in fact the arrow is merely descriptor on a ranged effect...
