  • Some rule reworkings you might like

    Okay so i have been experimenting with a few tweaks to the main system and i hope you enjoy them...

    1: Defense has been changed in to 2 new variations.
    A: Dodge is 10+Dexterity and is the Defense against Ranged attacks. Dexterity (Acrobatics) will also add a Focus Bonus to Dodge
    B: Parry is 10+Fighting and is the Defense against Melee attacks. If you are using a Weapon that you have the Focus for, then the Focus bonus will apply to Parry.

    BLOCKING TALENT:
    You are skilled in the art of defense (While Weapon/Shield Talent is recommended as the Fighting Style of choice, any will do.
    CLASS: Rogue, Warrior
    REQUIRES: Dexterity 2+, Any Fighting Style (Novice)
    NOVICE: You know how to block almost anything. You can substitute Accuracy for Fighting when calculating Parry and thus use its Focuses as a bonus.
    JOURNEYMAN: When you use the Defend Action, you gain a +3 instead of a +2
    MASTER: ?????

    2: Initiative remains the same (3d6+Dexterity (Initiative)) but with a new twist

    COMBAT TACTICS TALENT:
    Your mind is as deadly as your blade
    CLASS: Any
    REQUIRES: Intelligence 2+, Any Fighting Style (Novice)
    NOVICE: You can substitute your Intelligence (Tactics) when calculating Initiative. Also, once per turn, you can take up to a -3 on your attack roll to gain that much in damage and vice versa
    JOURNEYMAN: Once per turn you can take up to a -3 on your attack roll to gain that much in Defense and vice versa
    MASTER: Your knowledge of the battlefield is unrivaled. When generating Initiative Stunts, you have a +1 SP Generation bonus

    I think it might work. However, if I ever switch to a different defense for melee/ranged i would go with the Witcher Game of Imagination and Savage Worlds approach that it's basically a static defense. A normal person can't really dodge a real ranged attack, so characters use cover, shields, laying down, etc.

    That said, your rule won't break your game or anything like that. It's just one more layer of complexity, but if that's not a problem for your game then go for it.

      those i spoke to like the idea. it adds a bit more complexity yeah but the idea of altering a characters defensive capabilities as well as attack just works for everyone. and besides, i kinda got the idea from Mutants and Masterminds. but thanks for the input.

      that being said, does anyone have an idea for Blocking at Master level. i can't quite figure that one out and i don't want it to be too op. any advice would be a big help.

        Some kind of reflected damage. Striking a shield causes the defenders strength in damage to the attacker.

            Yes. Maybe not quite as direct as an offhand attack with your shield, but more of a hazard for those attacking the shield. Talents though don't normally grant you new abilities. That kind of thing usually shows up in specialisations or class abilities.

            Spell reflect and blinding effects are cool too.

              So how about this.

              MASTER: If you take the Defend action, you can Counter-Strike anyone who attacks you this round. This Counter will be at a -2 attack and it has no opportunity to generate Stunt Points.

                What about something related to defensive stance? you might gain a new stunt that allows for ripostes this turn, or maybe changing the defensive stance with something such as 'when you use defensive stance you can choose between the extra +1 defense from the previous level or being able to make a single Riposte attack when attacked. This attack is made at -2 and can't generate stunts' or something like that.

                    I have always thought riposte would be great for a better duelist spec. The ultimate tank would be guardian duelist.

                      MASTER: When you take the Guard Up action, you can use it without taking any penalties to the next test you take. If you use Guard Up or Defend, you can make a Riposte against any opponent you attacks you in melee combat. this is a counter-attack at a -2 penalty but damage is dealt normally if you succeed.

                      Any ideas?
