  • Weapon Group Talents - Anyone on that already?

    Hey guys and gals,

    I wonder if anyone already started (or finished) a set of talents tied to specific weapon groups.

    FAGE does that weird semi-tied thing with Thrown, Archery & Polearm tied to groups while Two-handed, Dual-Weapon, Single-Weapon and Shield are not.

    Anyone some good ideas on how to make them?

    This would be fairly dependant on how people choose their house rules on hit and damage mechanics. Your earlier thread this week has a bunch of different GM approaches.

    As I have said other places, I like spell arcana approach and would do something like the following:
    • Novice: +1 Weapon Proficiency, -1 SP to a combat stunt
    • Journeyman: +1 Weapon Proficiency, +1 AR when taking damage when holding this weapon
    • Master: +1 Weapon Proficiency, Advantage on damage rolls

    Assumptions:
    • Focuses and proficiencies increase by 1 each time up to 3 times, replaces +2/+1 progression
    • Talents should approximately be worth 2 value points.
    • Advantage on damage rolls is where you would roll one extra dice and take out the lowest value (~+1 for 1d6, ~+1.5 for 2d6, ~+1.75 for 3d6)

      not really in that respect but i have tried to come up with a few new fighting styles that are a bit unique. i have since lost that file but i had made a few fighting styles that were an expansion of the Unarmed Combat Style, adding different things based on the "Style" that was used. Tiger style added to damage while Crane added to agility. things like that. it was an attempt to create some styles for a Monk that my brother was mimicking with how he build a Warrior. if i can find it, i can post some of them for you for some ideas. i know it's not really the same but it might help.

        They're not that weird. Thrown weapons require throwing something, archery shooting something, and pole-arm a pole. You can also use two handed style with a halberd, or weapon/shield style with a shield/throwing axe.

          The issue I have with this method is there seems to be little difference between one weapon and another. AGE isn't an overly complex game to begin with, and if you use this method, using a great sword vs. a pike is the difference between one stunt or another, as opposed to a mixture of SP reductions and minor abilities.

            Yeah, I would say a few basic bonuses could be the same for all weapon group talents (some basic attack or damage bonus/benefit), but they should all possess something unique to distinguish each other.

            I think Archery (or at least my variant) is quite good as an example what I would be aiming for.

            E.g. Blugeon Talent could allow for a Stunning Attack...

              Honestly, I fail to see the point in this particular alteration. Weapon group talents, I think, would only be a cosmetic difference. Three distinct ways that a great axe is different than a great sword? I mean, if you want to, great, but I don't think there will be much, if any, difference.

                I FOUND MY DOCUMENT!!! it was in a folder i stashed in a deeper storage program for later and completely forgot about. but i came up with 5 new fighting styles that are meant to be new options for Unarmed Combat Style. i created the 5 Kung Fu Styles. each one is unique and i designed them off of the way they are used by the Furious 5 in Kung Fu Panda.

                i will clean it up a bit before i post it. it was for my brother who wanted to play the monk type with unarmed being his primary talent so i devised new ways for him to achieve his idea. one major change for the kung fu styles was that they all increased damage to 1D6 before the Novice Level bonus. so it doesn't matter which one you choose, you gain 1D6 in unarmed damage AND the Novice Rank when you get that style. only other change is, only 1 Kung Fu style is allowed. i don't want any one character to get too powerful.

                once i have cleaned them up i will post them. i hope you all enjoy.

                  My template for the Weapon Proficiency talents go like so:

                  WEAPON PROFICIENCY
                  You can take this talent multiple times, but you must select a different weapon group each time.
                  • Basic: You are proficient in the chosen weapon group. You now add your Proficiency to attack rolls and other relevant tests that use the chosen weapon group.
                  • Advanced: Special maneuver, depending on the chosen weapon group.
                  • Superior: +1 damage die to attacks using chosen weapon group.


                  I have other weapon mastery talents that do other, more specific stuff, but this is the general talent that's available to all characters.

                      I'd let characters get more than one martial arts style and change between them for like a minor action. I'd even consider adding a third line that did nothing but allow the combination of two others.

                        That is true. never considered that one. but as promised, here they are...
                        Any Class can take any of these styles.

                        REMEMBER: All Kung Fu Styles increase base Unarmed Damage to 1d6+STR

                        TIGER:
                        Tiger Style is based more on strength and ferocity rather than finesse or grace.
                        REQUIRES: Fighting 2+ and the Brawling Weapons Group
                        NOVICE: You hit like a rock. you can perform the Knock Prone Stunt for 1 SP instead of 2.
                        JOURNEYMAN: Your fists can break through almost any armor. you can perform the Mighty Blow and Pierce Armor Stunts at the same time for only 3 SP
                        MASTER: Your mind and body are now in perfect sync. you now add your Fighting Score to all Unarmed Damage rolls

                        CRANE:
                        Crane Style is a style of balance in both strength and finesse.
                        REQUIRES: Accuracy 1+, Fighting 1+ and the Brawling Weapons Group
                        NOVICE: You get a +1 to all Initiative Rolls. Also, you can sacrifice your initiative place and go dead last for an additional Minor action per turn for the entire encounter. you can only use this effect once per game session.
                        JOURNEYMAN: For a minor action, you can enter "Fight or Flight" mode. you can sacrifice up to a -2 on your Speed to add that bonus to your attack bonus or vice versa. you can switch the effect for a minor action
                        MASTER: Your Accuracy and Fighting are unrivaled. you can choose one focus for either one of those 2 Abilities that you do not have; you are considered to have them for the encounter. Also you now Add your Dexterity to all Unarmed Damage

                        MANTIS:
                        Mantis Style is about using your opponents weaknesses against them.
                        REQUIRES: Accuracy 1+, Intelligence 1+ and the Brawling Weapons Group
                        NOVICE: For the cost of a Minor Action you can assess a targets weaknesses and gain a +1 to attack on that target as well as a +1 DEF against their attacks. you can switch targets as another Minor Action, but you cannot have more than one target active
                        JOURNEYMAN: When you use the Lightning Attack Stunt, you can add the effects of either Mighty Blow or Pierce Armor to the second attack for a -2 attack penalty
                        MASTER: You can perform the Disarm Stunt on an Armed Target for 1SP instead of 2 and you gain an additional +1 bonus to your next attack against them. also, you add your Intelligence score to all unarmed Damage

                        MONKEY:
                        Monkey Style is about agility and setting up attacks with allies
                        REQUIRES: Dexterity 2+ and the Brawling Weapons Group
                        NOVICE: You can use the Set Up Stunt for 2 SP instead of 3 and it applies to 2 allies not just 1
                        JOURNEYMAN: You can add your Acrobatics Focus to all Accuracy-Based Tests in combination with the appropriate focus
                        MASTER: You can perform a special 4 SP stunt called "Tag-Team". you can add your Accuracy or Fighting to an Allies that you designate. the ally must be within your Speed if you have not moved your full speed rank this turn. Also, you add your Dexterity to all unarmed damage

                        SNAKE:
                        Snake Style is based on accuracy and finesse over brute force.
                        REQUIRES: Accuracy 2+ and the Brawling Weapons Group
                        NOVICE: Your strikes are pin-point accurate. you can perform the Pierce Armor Stunt for 1 Sp instead of 2
                        JOURNEYMAN: You can use Knock Prone and Mighty Blow at the same time for 3 SP instead of 4
                        MASTER: Your mind and body are now in perfect sync. you now add your Accuracy Score to all Unarmed Damage rolls

                            Yes it will. my intent was actually a long time ago was to create a Kung Fu Panda Supplement but i scrapped it and so i kept the styles for my brother. i am thinking about adding other animals as well, like Oxen or Crocodile. Having no more than 10-15 total variations. i want to have options not overrun the game, y'know?

                            Besides, i am going to add these to Age of Alchemy, my Steampunk game since i have an Asian-like nation in there so it will help on that front as well. i hope you all enjoy, more to come...hopefully.
