  • kingdom hearts for Fantasy Age

    Okay, so i have been thinking about this for a while and i have here some of my notes for a Kingdom Hearts RPG. i want is based on FAGE but some MAJOR changes will be made to try and fit with the games a bit more.

    Kingdom Hearts RPG based on FAGE notes

    1. CLASSES: there will be 4 base classes instead of 3, Warrior, Mystic, Guardian, and Shadow
    2. AP will be awarded at certain levels and are spent on unique Special Abilities. This system replaces Stunts
    3. All Classes will have access to MP, but Mystics will have the highest amount with Shadow and Guardian at second and Warrior at third. That being said, reverse that order for Health
    4. There will be 10 Abilities instead of 9. Keeping with the standard but adding in Magic from Dragon Age.
    a. Accuracy is the attack attribute for Ranged and Finesse weapons. Perception adds to damage for Ranged weapons while Dexterity will add to damage for Finesse weapons
    b. Fighting is the Attack attribute for Brutal Weapons and Strength adds to damage for those
    c. Willpower will add to the Casting roll for Spells and Magic will add to its damage
    5. Summoning and Limit moves are still in the works as are Drive forms
    6. Magic will fall under the following: Fire, Ice, Aero, Thunder, Dark, Light, Rock, Time, and Gravity
    7. Instead of 3D6, all rolls will be made on a d20, being of a similar number curve
    a. That being said, a natural 20 will result in a Critical, which increases damage or produces some really cool effect. The most common Critical will be Maximum Damage, where you deal the maximum amount of damage possible for the weapon being used

    Man...I was really hyped with the idea of a Kingdom Hearts you mentioned some time ago. I'm kinda sad that you went for a d20 instead of 3d6: seems to me that a 3d6 system + stunts + specs are what made FAGE so charming. Removing some of those mechanics seems strange.

    I'd keep the stunts, but make them really really like specials signature moves, not just attack modifications. I'd also give the player the abilities to «stock» stunt points in combat to be able to use special stunts like Limits (powerful Stunts) or even Drive forms (Valor, Wisdom, Master, Finale, Anti) (Stunt modes) (ex: Valor Form 9 SP: You can enter a Valor Form . You gain bonuses X Y Z. The effects last until the end of the encounter)

    The rest seems really good.

      The thing about using a d20 instead of 3d6 is that it doesn't have remotely the same curve to the results, it just has a similar range. The two are not the same. With 3d6, different results have different probabilities with the middle of the range (8-12) being far more likely than the outliers. This is the bell curve, because if you graph it it will look like a bell. With a d20, however, each result is just as likely as another result - there is no curve where numbers will trend towards a certain range. This is why people refer to the d20 as "swingy"; it's a lot easier to roll several outlier results in a row (such as a string of 1,17,4,20) than with the 3d6, which will natural tend towards the middle ranges.

      Also, how are you planning on implementing Stunts with a single dice roll? (And, personally, I find the Stunt system to be a much better Critical Hit system than most Critical Hit rules).

        I would not worry to much about the bell curve, specially in combat: in FAGE, hitting the enemy is more a formality than a real challenge once you leveled up a little, and I think it fits the idea of a (video)game where hitting the enemy just requires the player to point the joystick in the right direction. The real challenge is actualy dealing damage, cause enemies tend to have large amount of healt and armor.

        When I think about about Kingdom Hearts, I think about epic battle against huge Heartless monsters: to defeat non-generic enemies, you'll need those Sunts, Limits move and Drive Form to be able to defeat them. Just hitting the enemy with a basic attack wont get you far, thats why I'm suggesting making hitting the enemy a formality. ''You hit the enemy? Now what are you going to do about it?''.

        For the Stats, I'd mix those from Kingdom hearts and DA (no difference between ''to-hit'' stats and ''damage'' stats)
        HP-»Constitution
        Melee Damage-» Strength
        Magick Damage-»Magick
        Finess Damage and move-» Dex
        Defense and spot check-»Perception
        Elemental resistance-»new stat, shield against elemental attack
        Resist spell and MP-»Willpower
        Luck-» new stat, Gm may call a Luck test to allow to reroll a missed test, to find special items etc

          well, you both have made really good points here. thank you for that, i mean...that's why i posted the idea, so that we can come up with new ideas.

          That being said, i am going to take those things to heart, they make sense and i really like them.

          As for the abilities change, i am going to have to change the stats anyway on order to fit the universe and so the idea above is actually better.

          And as for stunts, i never thought of using stunts for Limits and Drive forms. that actually makes perfect sense.

            You may have noticed I did not include an Intelligence or Cunning stat. I think those stats always create a negative metagaming vibe: I dont like to stop my speech just to ask myself and the rest of the group, out of character, if my character knows something or is smart enough to say something.
            I also like Defense being Perception-based instead of of Dex to avoid making Dex a power stat (damage, defense, initiative and move). I mean: how does someone with -1 Perception can really ''dodge'' an attack if he's almost blind. You need to be able to see the danger coming before even thinking avoiding it.

            Elemental resistance should act like armor but for spells (all spells like Fire, Fira, Firaga and so on should be penetrating to normal armor). Then you could choose specifc focuses to add a +2 bonus to a specifi element (ex Focus: Elemental Resistance (Fire) adds +2 armor against fire based spells.)

              one thing i forgot to mention is no keybearers. Since there are only a few chosen by the keyblade, i want to avoid it right now. rules for that can be added in later, but i want other forms of heroes to emerge to fight the darkness right now. maybe Keybearer can be a Specialization but i'm not really worried about it.

              I want to portray other forms of heroes, like Leon and Cloud or Hercules and Auron. also, i want this to be transferred into a Final Fantasy RPG so beginning simply with the Kingdom Hearts universe and then making rules for the other games in the franchise will actually be a bit simpler.

                Maybe do the same thing with DA's Greywardens: some bonus when/if you become a Keybearer. Like a 1 stat advancement and 1 talent advancement and a +2 bonus to resist an Heartless corruption. Also comes with the ability to select the special Focus: Perception (Detect Heartless).

                    Well...its mostly just changing the name Darkspawn to Heartless :P The heartless could use the same special stunt darkspawns use to corrupt a player after a time.

                      I absolutely hated it being d20 (but that's a personal thing, it might not be bad)

                      However, i would add Commands, and a D6 called "Command Die". That way every roll would have Command Points to make special moves, reflecting the Commands of the series.

                      OR

                      I would make a SP pool, as in Iron Heroes. You gain a 1d6 SP everytime a certain action is made (Archers used AIM, Paladins receiving damage, etc). You then use that points for special moves, reflecting both Commands AND Reactions of the series.

                      I just came with those ideas so they might be bad.

                        well, based on ideas from others, i have decided that certain special maneuvers can only be made by banking SP, for example the Drive Forms can only be active when you have say 6+SP banked. Trinity Limit i have decided will cost 9SP. Other special techniques will cost SP like Sonic costing 2+ (2 for the initial attack and +1 for each new attempt to hit the target to a maximum of 6SP or 5 Attacks). and going with a D20 just won't work for this so i am sticking with 3D6.

                        As for Reactions, i am still contemplating that one. i think i may make them special Abilities you can Spend AP on (BTW: the characters will get a certain number of AP to spend on special Abilities, Not Talents, that grant certain bonuses: EX: Dodge Roll or Sonic Blade)

                        also on the To Do list: Summons and Equipment.

                        For Equipment, i want to have one weapon chosen at creation and have different versions available for purchase later on. For Example: the Kingdom Key would be Standard while the other Keyblade designs would be better, more powerful versions. but keep in mind the Keybearer is not playable as of yet but it is still a viable example. this way, a character only has their one special weapon of choice and can get better variations, Like Squalls' Gunblade.

                          Here ore some of the ideas i have come up with. please tell me what you think...

                          for the most part, i was thinking of going with an Attribute=Derived Trait idea. For example:
                          Attribute---------Derived Trait
                          Constitution------HP (Health)
                          Willpower---------MP (Magic Points)
                          Strength---------Melee Damage (Brutal Weapons such as 2-handed swords or maces)
                          Dexterity---------Melee Damage (Finesse Weapons such as daggers of staves) and Initiative
                          Accuracy---------Ranged Damage (Not magic)
                          Magic-------------Magic Damage
                          Fighting----------Attack Bonus for all weapons and Defense
                          Perception--------Notice
                          Intelligence-------Tactical Bonus
                          Communication---Persuade, Deceive, Seduce, and Intimidate bonuses

                          Focuses under each Attribute will do the exact same as in FAGE, acting like Skills in association with that attribute

                          TALENTS and SPELLS
                          Talents will remain basically the same with some changes due to world, but anyone can learn Magic, so they will be made to fit the KH/FF genre instead of the Arcana in F-AGE

                          AP and Special Abilities
                          AP will be awarded at certain levels and thus Special Abilities can be purchased. These are going to be things like Stunt Bonuses, Special combat maneuvers like Dodge Roll, and Even Special Powers like Trinity Limit or Renzokuken. Drive Forms will be available to purchase here as well (And not just the 5 from the games) as Special Stunts. Summons may also work as one of these Special Abilities one can purchase.

                          Equipment:
                          The Equipment will be simplified. instead of Weapon Groups there will be Ranged, Finesse, and Brutal Weapons. There will be 10 tiers of each weapon under each category. these will be things like short swords, 2-handed swords, Magical Wands, Shields and

                            Like I said earlier, I dont think fighting and intelligence should be a stat in your list when the result you want is a simple system based on a JRPG. Attack bonus and tactical bonus are aditional book keeping. I'd stay with DA stat: Dex for hit/damage for Finess, and Str for hit/damage for Heavy.

                              well, i don't agree with this statement. i see where you are coming from but in the Dragon Age video Game you didn't need Perception or Communication, but they added them in anyway because in a tabletop game, they are very important attributes. in almost every RPG you will find some sort of thing related to those 2, weather they be skills or attributes. I divided up the damage to different stats because it takes different skills to use different weapons. i should know because i have used a very large amount of weapons myself.

                              that being said, you have to keep in mind that video games are vastly different than their tabletop counterparts. even Dragon Age. i didn't mind the d20 version of Final Fantasy due to the change from video to tabletop. (And they took the time and effort to make it as close as possible without completely messing it up)

                              Fighting is different here, it is not to hold brutal weapons, it is your training in combat. for example, Sora in KH1 would begin with a 0 or 1 in Fighting and at the end he has probably a 3 while in KH2 it is upgraded to 6 by the end. Combat skills are derived from Fighting. it is a very important stat. So all weapons get the Stat in attack Bonus, but the weapon types under Fighting will get the Focus Bonus. so Sora by KH2 has the Keyblade Focus under Fighting gaining a further bonus to attacking with the Keyblade.

                              As a clarification though, the Tactical Bonus for INT is a +1 for every 2 ranks in INT. this can be used once per encounter on any Ability Test of choice, even attacking if the target is tough.
