  • Rogue & Dueling Weapons focus

So the Rogue class doesn't list the Dueling weapons group as part of them to start with, I'm confused as to how a level 1 rogue would be able to use a rapier for example.

Would he just take it as his level 1 focus for accuracy?

You don't get any focus at 1st level, other than those of your race and background.

At 1st level, a rogue with a rapier would roll an Accuracy test with a -2 penalty and deal half damage. At 3rd level, you could take the Accuracy (Dueling) focus and negate the penalty to the Accuracy test. (-2 for not being a trained weapon group, +2 for Focus).
If you have taken the Dual Weapon Style talent at 3rd level, you can get the Duelist specialization at 4th level, completely dropping the -2 penalty and dealing full damage.
“Hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet.”

From the way its handled in DA--which sounds like its similar to the one in FAGE, though you get specializations earlier in the latter--they just don't seem to assume the dueling weapons are a thing for anything but experienced rogues who've had time to pursue the specialized skills.

So there's no other way for a rogue to learn the Dueling Weapon group than through the Duelist specialization? That's interesting. So, to answer the OP, no...there is no way for a rogue to have proficiency with a rapier at Level 1 (they can certainly use one, but not without heavy penalty).

An interesting side note: the Duelist talent says, "you learn the Dueling Weapon Group if you don't know it already." Seeing how Duelist is a Rogue-only spec, there's no way to learn it before they take this spec.

Though there's nothing to say a future product won't have some other way to start with proficiency in the Duelist weapon group, so that line is most likely just future-proofing the specialisation.

That certainly could be the case. I don't know if the GR folks were that forward-thinking, but it's sure optimistic to think so!

Hope nobody minds this act of thread necromancy, but would it break anything to allow Rogues the option of taking Dueling Weapons as an option at first level?

Given a Dwarf Rogue can start out with access to the Axes weapon group, which deals significantly higher damage, probably not.

Not particularly. It's a (minor) benefit of the Duellist specialisation to get the group if the character doesn't already have it, so I can't see how it would wildly imbalance things to substitute the Duelling Weapons group into the Rogues list of OPTIONAL Weapon Groups, or may be let them choose between Light Blades and Duelling?

                  Cheers,

                  Nick
