  • Another newbie GM - a bunch of questions

    Hey there guys,

got a couple of questions before I start my first DA campaing in May:

    1. Is there a templar background somewhere? I know it's a warrior spec later on, and I guess I could improvise something based on a Fereldan noble background. Is there reason why none exists in the core rulebook?

    2. Is there a spell diagramm/chart where you can see the requirements for each spell? I've seen a couple of older threads but the links to the respective all seem to be broken.

    3. The calendar seems to have weird seasons. Does fall really start in August? Isn't Firstday/New Year on Mitwinter? If so, shouldn't Haring be the first month?

    4. Do you use common names for the days of the week? It's said that Thedas has two moons, how do the moon phases work in your campaing (this may seem fairly unimportant, but knowing my players, it will sooner or later come up..)

    5. It seems to me there should be a way for mages to conjure light - I've considered using it as a alternate version of "arcane lance", where the mage can conjure light for up to his magic in rounds, with the option to invest 1 mana point for each additional minute as upkeep cost. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

    6. The character creation for starting abilities system - which one do you use? Personally, I'm a fan of the buying ability option...

    7. When my players start creating characters, are there any bugs that I should be aware of, or combinations that I should avoid? Speaking from your experience...

Every input will be much appreciated.

    I donít think so.

    No

Much appreciated, thank you. I'd overlooked the light wisp feature of the creation talent; good to know.

You can find some fanmade spell tree charts using Google.

        3. The calendar seems to have weird seasons. Does fall really start in August?
        I think so.

        4. Do you use common names for the days of the week? It's said that Thedas has two moons, how do the moon phases work in your campaing (this may seem fairly unimportant, but knowing my players, it will sooner or later come up..)
Yes, we use common names. For what is worth, in Dragon Age: Origins, Alistair makes a reference to the weekday Tuesday.

        6. The character creation for starting abilities system - which one do you use? Personally, I'm a fan of the buying ability option...
        We use a standard array: 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0.

        7. When my players start creating characters, are there any bugs that I should be aware of, or combinations that I should avoid? Speaking from your experience...
        Not at low levels.
At high levels, if you use the system as is, we found two main problems:
        1) Health and Mana will bloat. In our first campaign, my players used a lyrium potion only once.
        2) Mages can get almost impassable spellpower. This makes some spells really annoying (in particular, spells that prevent targets from taking actions).

Re: Another newbie GM - a bunch of questions

Im working right now so I don't have any book. But let me check what I can do.

          1. No background. I think that background is who you were before being and adventurer and being a Templar requires training. You cannot be a week Templar, you have to train and them become one. On the other hand Wizards are week but start "being" Wizards since they discover their magic and start practicing (inside or outside the circle).

          2. Yes, there are. I have seen many. Don't have any on hand but I'll look at home.

          4. I don't remember any info on the moons. But if you want to do something with it you can use any of the Dragonlance Moon charts and choose two of the tree moons.

          5. I see no problem. But since the light spell does not exist I think you are eliminating a possible resource management element.

          6. When I DM players roll tree columns of numbers and choose the one they like. Then put every number in any stat in any order.

          7. At the moment I can't recall any gamebreaker combo. I haven't reach specialisations so I don't know. I think that you should understand the game to be able create challenging encounters for everyone. I mean not rocket science, but stop to think how attack, damage and magic works. There are some differences with other games. Specially in the action economy.

I donít think there are any official ones. AFAIK, they were all made by fans, and that was years ago.

The two closest are mages and CC and Spellbloom.

Mages can keep targets stunlocked for an entire encounter with Horror, Paralyze, Mind Blast, etc. if you nerf mages, it can hurt their blasting.

Second, if a mage picks up Spellbloom, HP/MP wonít be reduced by attrition.
