Welcome to the Wonders of Thedas, your one-stop-shop for all your Dragon Age roleplaying game needs!

You can hear the episode above, or you can listen on iTunes, Google Play, and Soundcloud!

It was a difficult decision to make this episode….not really, we were happy to talk about it, but deciding what to talk about when making decision was hard! We talk about Moral Challenges, the decision points that are exemplified in the Dragon Age video games, and how you can create your own for your Dragon Age adventures! We discuss stumbling blocks, ways to increase the tension and investment, and give a few examples to help you get started! We also talk about making some potions, and some very painful puns from the darkest depths of the Deep Roads…

Re: Wonders of Thedas Episode 66: What is Your Will?

It was good to listen to a whole episode devoted to crafting effective moral choices for PCs. I remember us discussing this during the earlier episode on 'Crafting Epic Campaigns' - making difficult moral choices is a crucial part of the Dragon Age computer games, which us GMs should include in our games to better evoke the world of Thedas.

In the computer games there's often a choice to avoid battle or let something unwholesome occur, in return for monetary award. I note that you advise making the negative consequence of an immoral choice pertinent and relevant to the PCs, so as to make it a more difficult one. Actually, that only makes it more difficult for the more mercenary-minded characters. For the PC who generally tries to do the right thing, making the negative consequences unclear or against far away strangers, is the way to make it more difficult. There's an interesting side-mission in the Deep Roads part of Dragon Age Origins called 'Asunder'. In that, a Fade Beast offers to reward the Warden financially (25 GC) if they allow it to escape into the mortal world - if they do so, the codex entry indicates that others are possibly hurt because of the Warden's greed. I love the notes at the bottom of the Dragon Age wiki entry on the quest:

It is recommended that you take the reward as, although the codex entry states that others may be hurt by releasing the demon, it appears to have no effect on the game (or DAII & DA:Inquisition). The rewards for fighting it are negligible (~100XP and possibly a generic breastplate or even nothing).

No moral quandary for that wiki-poster!

You also mention the idea of sometimes allowing a 'third way', where the PCs can try to achieve both positive outcomes through some extra effort. I'm reminded of the choice in DA Awakening to save either Amaranthine or Vigil's Keep - only one can be saved, unless the Warden Commander took the effort and spent resources to prepare the fortress in advance, in which case both can.

Oh - as a Patreon of the podcast, I listened to the next episode a week early, and noticed that you seemed to think I had not proffered my traditional question for it - not so! You've forgotten my query from episode 65 on the Keeper specialisation. I re-post it here...

As a question for a future podcast then, how does the following sound as an alternative house rule?

        Keeper Specialisation

        Master
: You can tap into the natural cycle of death and rebirth. If you inflict any damage with a Wrath of the Elvhen spell, you regain health equal to half your Magic ability, rounded down. Also, if an enemy dies within the range of an active Wrath of the Elvhen spell, you get back 1d6 Health if you are wounded. In each case, if you are already at full Health, you gain no benefit.

        Keep up the good work!

I could have sworn we spoke of that already! I must have been mistaken.

We’ll make sure to get that on the next show!
