Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules and more.

    Dragon Age Journeys
(Note: To answer some questions in advance, all these characters were built with the point-buy rules from Set 2; additionally, art and additional texts were taken from the Dragon Age Wikia.)

Dragon Age Journeys is a 2-D flash game set in the Dragon Age universe released on November 3, 2009. It is a single player game, told in three chapters. Ethan Levy, a producer with EA 2-D, describes it as a "tactical RPG". It features classes, spells, talents, sound effects and music taken directly from Dragon Age: Origins.

Unfortunately, only Chapter One was produced, with Chapters two and three cancelled before release

    Chapter One: The Deep Roads
Chapter one is set in the dwarven city of Orzammar and the darkspawn infested Deep Roads.

    Story
The protagonist of the game Journeys starts in the Deep Roads, being there for different reasons according to his/her race and background.

Whatever the reasons though, the protagonist's party is quickly attacked by a glowing Hurlock emissary, an Ogre and some darkspawn. The others in the party die but the protagonist manages to flee and barely alive, arrives back at Orzammar.

After being healed by a Spirit healer named Ardum, the protagonist ventures back to the Deep roads, searching for a Warden named Martine.

The three have to gain the approval of some citizens of Orzammar so as to speak with the King and inform him of the new threat. During the quests, a new member may enter the party, Ryanth the bard.

In the end, during a quest given by the crime lord Saria, one to find what happened with her diamond smugglers, the party encounters the glowing Emissary in a nearby diamond mine. The emissary placed plenty of digging darkspawn for some unknown reason.

Already weakened from powering his digging machines, the party of the protagonist is able to defeat the Emissary, who flees and manages to escape. The protagonist shuts down the emissary's excavation site, left wondering what the emissary was actually searching for...
    Low Level Characters with Specializations
The three Dragon Age Journeys companions presented below - Ardum, Ryanth, and Martine - are unique because just like Morrigan, Leliana or Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins, they have specializations before 6th level. Such a thing is not possible by DA:RPG rules, but happens a lot in the games. So, what can we do?

Well, as they are NPCs, you should not worry about it. But you can also allow your PCs to treat specializations as any other talent, so they could be selected before 6th level as specialized training. The character still needs the prerequisites for the specialization.

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules and more. NEW: Dragon Age Journeys

      No-Stunt Games

What if we decided to play the Dragon Age RPG without stunts? This idea came to me after a player complained about a certain 'unfairness' in the stunt system. So, what if we could add Stamina for rogues and warriors (just as mages have mana) and allow them to use it to perform special maneuvers whenever they want?

      Basic Idea
Mages have a mana pool, rogues and warriors have a stamina pool.
Stamina is 10 + 1d6 + Willpower at 1st level, and grows by 1d6 + Willpower every level thereafter, up to level 10. After level 10, it grows by Willpower every level.
Stamina is recovered just like mana. The GM may add "stamina draughts" in place of mana potions to recover stamina.

      Stunt Cost
A rogue or warrior may perform any stunt whenever they want, paying the stamina cost in advance. The cost is spent even if the attack roll misses. They don't need to roll doubles to activate the stunts. The effect of the stunt is added to the normal effect of the attack (damage or otherwise).
If a character gets a stunt bonus (a reduction in cost for a specific stunt due to a talent or something like that) simply reduce the stamina cost in 2 points (minimum 1 stamina per use). The basic cost of a stunt in Stamina equals twice times its basic sp cost.
Finally, just as with mages, wearing armor causes fatigue and increases the stamina cost of a stunt by the same amount it increases the mana cost of a spell. This cost is shown on the spellcasting table; basically: light leather increases the mana/stamina cost of a spell or stunt by +1 point; heavy leather, +2; light mail, +3; heavy mail, +4; light plate, +5; heavy plate, +6.

      Basic Stunts
      Skirmish: 2 stamina per use
      Rapid Reload: 2 stamina
      Stay Aware: 2 stamina
      Knock Prone: 4 stamina
      Defensive Stance: 4 stamina
      Disarm: 4 stamina
      Mighty Blow: 4 stamina
      Pierce Armor: 4 stamina
      Taunt: 4 stamina
      Threaten: 4 stamina
      Lightning Attack: 6 stamina
      Dual Strike: 8 stamina
      Seize the Initiative: 8 stamina
      Lethal Blow: 10 stamina

Notice that in this version, there are no combat stunts for mages. If you wish to keep spell stunts, allow mages to perform then spending extra mana equal to twice the stunt cost. Spell stunts that recover mana are banned, for obvious reasons. If you wish to allow combat stunts for mages, they can be perform with mana. In this case, mana and stamina are both the same thing - they are simply used differently (you can call it "energy" or "stamina"... The reasoning is that both uses of special maneuvers cause stress on the character's body).

Finally, for this variant, an optional rule of this optional rule is that characters may recover health, mana or stamina by an amount equal to the dragon die whenever they roll doubles on a combat test.

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules, etc. NEW: Dragon Age Journeys, Stamina

We have been using a system almost identical to that for the last year. No stunts but giving them a Stamina pool. The only difference is we have been using Cunning as the stat for them to get Stamina instead of Willpower. The players have really enjoyed the freedom and control they have over things instead of the randomness stunts provided.

That's nice! Can you share your system? Costs, changes to the rules, etc?
In our games we use Willpower both for Stamina and Mana, but mostly because that's the base stat to calculate mana/stamina in the games

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules, etc. NEW: Dragon Age Journeys, Stamina

            Animal Training and Animal Companions

These rules expand the Animal Trainin talent (DA:Core, p. 58) and Ranger Specialization (DA:Core, p. 69).

The way the rules for rangers and the Animal Talent training were written, they are not as "useful" as more combat-oriented talents. I've noticed that, in many tables/gaming groups, people don't choose these talents because they don't feel they'll have an opportunity to use it. So, here's some alternative rules for these talents.

The Animal Training talent now allows you to turn animals you train into prime examples of their kind. You probably can sell your skill for a patron for a very high price (to train an animal you can charge at least the price one would pay to buy it - meaning that an animal you trained costs at least twice as much as a regular animal of the same kind). You can also keep one (and only one) animal companion. This animal companion can be any animal you're able to train (with GM's approval). Your animal companion is considered completely trained to the limit of your ability (see below).
For each rank of the talent (novice, journeyman or master) you can improve the stats of a certain kind of animal. It takes an advanced test (DA:Core, p. 213) to train an animal. The target number and success threshold depends on the animal and each test takes a week of work.
As a novice you can train fairly common animals: dogs, mabari, birds of prey, etc. The TN to train these animals is 13 and the success threshold is 10. After the animal is completely trained you can add the Elite template to it or turn a non-combatant animal into a combatant (such as training a riding horse as a war horse able to attack on command).
As a journeyman you can train larger and uncommon animals: black bears, halla, horses, bronto, giant rats, wolves. The TN to train these animals is 15 and the success threshold is 15. After the animal is completely trained you can add the Elite template to it. At this level, you can also train a novice-level animal and add the Heroic template to it.
As a master you can train exotic and rare animals: great bears, great lions, giant spiders, wyverns. The TN to train these animals is 17 and the success threshold is 20. After the animal is completely trained you can repeat the training and add the Elite template to it (DA:Core, p. 270). At this level, you can also train a novice-level animal and add the Epic template to it or train a journeyman-level animal and add the Heroic template to it.
The Elite, Heroic, and Epic templates can be found on DA:Core, p. 270.

A character with the Ranger Specialization also can add templates (Elite, Heroic, or Epic) to the animals they command.
The novice Ranger can add the Elite template to all animals summoned.
The journeyman Ranger can add the Heroic template to all animals summoned.
The master Ranger can add the Epic template to all animals summoned.
To summon an animal with a template, add +2 to the TN of the test per rank of the template. So, luring a common animal usually has TN 13, but luring an elite animal is TN 15, luring a heroic animal is TN 17, and luring an epic animal is TN 19.
Finally, I recommend that rangers are allowed to extend the time their animals stay with the party. Instead of half an hour, the animal stays with the party for one significant encounter (a "significant encounter" is any encounter where the animal's traits are useful to the characters, at GM's discretion), and that for each encounter after that the ranger may be allowed to repeat the Communication (Animal Handling) test to keep the animal around.

            Equipment for Rangers
Rangers can buy specific lures and items to help them summon their animals. The cost for this is 20 silver and it adds a +2 bonus to lure a single animal.

            New Magic Item

            Ranger Collar
This collar is masterfully crafted and can fit animals from the size of small dogs to large bears.

When a ranger tries to lure an animal using this collar, the time to lure the animal is reduced to 1 minute.

Item Type: Animal collar; Estimated Value: 2-4 gold pieces.

The system is pretty much identical to the ones that you posted. With the exception that we use Cunning instead of Willpower to determine Stamina. The other difference is that we allow Mage's to also have a Stamina pool and use the stunts as well. Just like the normal stunts all of the magical ones have their costs doubled for the amount of Stamina it costs.

In our campaigns we have also gotten rid of the 1d6 rolling to increase Health/Mana/Stamina. At each level you only gain whatever your attribute stat is instead. But the numbers are retroactive. This was done to shorten combat and make things a bit more deadly and therefor intense/exciting. We've also lowered the Armor reductions of everything (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) to help create that same flow.

Getting back into action after a loooong hiatus...

Coming up with new stuff. What are you guys interested in these days?

                  Unique Creatures of Thedas (cont.)

In this section you'll find stats for unique creatures or bosses from the Dragon Age franchise that I find interesting.

Blood Magic: When casting a spell, a blood mage can use the blood of a creature within 6 yards (including themselves) to power their spells. Using the blood of an unwilling target requires a Magic (Blood ) vs. Willpower (Faith or Self-Discipline ) test. The target takes 1d6 penetrating damage (or 2d6 penetrating damage if the target is adjacent and helpless), and the blood mage gains a number of mana points equal to the damage dealt. These mana points must be spent on the spell the mage is currently casting.
Blood Shield: When a blood mage is under the effects of arcane shield and an enemy attacks him, the enemy takes 1d6 penetrating damage and the blood mage recovers Health equal to the damage done.

Whenever possible, the Baroness will not fight directly. She controls a great number of minions - both mortals and spirits - and will use them to threaten her enemies. When her minions are defeated, the Baroness, in a desperate attempt to escape, will use an underling's life force to tear the veil open and enter the mortal realm, becoming a Pride Demon so powerful that she's able to enter the mortal world even without a body to possess. She does, however, express surprise towards the extent of her power, being previously ignorant of her capacity of doing so.

THE BARONESS (Pride Demon Form) (Dragon Age: Origins Awakening)
                  Threat Level: Dire
Boss Rank Pride Demon: Epic Progression (Stamina +3, Strength +2, Magic +2, Cunning +1, Dexterity +1, Perception +1, five extra focuses, Health +20, armor rating +3, three extra talent degrees)

                  Special:
Immovable: A pride demon is immune to the combat stunts Skirmish and Knock Prone.
Mana Wave: A pride demon can explode with mana as a special stunt causing 4 SP. All magical spell effects within 6 yards of it are affected as if the pride demon had cast Dispel Magic. Spellcasters in the area also lose 1d6 mana points.
Primal Burst: A pride demon can cause a burst of fire or frost (its choice) to emanate from its body as a minor action. Anyone within 2 yards of the demon takes damage (2d6+3 fire damage or 1d6+2 penetrating frost damage), though this can be halved with a successful TN 18 Dexterity (Acrobatics) test.
Fade Portal: This Fade Demon can create portals as a 3 SP stunt. Each portal will remain open until dealt 20 points of damage. At the end of each round a portal remains open it will summon a shade (DARPG, p. 303) that will aid the Baroness in combat until destroyed.

                  Equipment: Dagger, staff.

Long ago, a particular high dragon settled near the Blackmarsh, wrecking chaos upon its residents. One night, the Baroness came and traveled to the dragon's lair. The next day, the dragon had disappeared, presumed dead, and while rumors circulated that the Baroness must have been a blood mage to have brought down such a beast, the grateful townsfolk paid them no heed.

The Baroness later became the Orlesian ruler of the Blackmarsh during Orlais' occupation of Ferelden, but her rule was marked by oppression, violence and injustice. She was, in fact, a blood mage and paid great amounts for the young girls to come to her mansion in order to restore her youth. The Baroness met her end when her subjects turned on her and burned down her mansion. With one last spell, the Baroness pulled all of their spirits into the Fade, trapping them in a nightmarish version of the Blackmarsh itself.

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules, etc. [GETTING BACK INTO THE GAME!]

                    DRAGON AGE LEGENDS

I used to love this little game.

                    Plot

13 years have passed since a group of warriors led by the Templar Ravi banded together to prevent an abomination from destroying the Free Marches city of Kaiten in a hedonistic orgy of narcissism and opulence.

The former Viscount Khedra spent most of his life as a venerated ruler, celebrated for his wisdom. Late in life, he started to change, beginning with the construction of a great coliseum where nobles' chosen champions competed for pride and glory. What began as games of entertainment quickly devolved into great spectacles of carnage punctuated by outlandish pageantry. The lesser nobles of Kaiten no longer settled their disputes in court, instead grievances big and small were decided by sword for the pleasure of an increasingly bloodthirsty populace.

The Viscount's nephew, Ravi, and his allies discovered the source of Khedra's odd behavior: Khedra was possessed by a powerful Pride demon and was now an abomination. These heroes were able to defeat the demon in a fearsome confrontation, and mysteriously, you were there to aid them.

Now, Ravi is the Viscount of Kaiten and you are one of his most trusted allies. When a mysterious set of circumstances begin to form around his son Eiton, you are the only one he trusts to save his son.
Below I'm going to stat a few of my favorite companions in this game, at the level that they first appear.

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------

                    RAVI
                    “For Kaiten!”
Background: Free Marcher (Constitution +1, Cunning +1, Bargaining, Deception), can speak and read the Trade Tongue
                    Class and Level: Warrior 5
Progression: Elite (Communication +1, Constitution +1, Willpower +1, Faith, Leadership, +1 talent rank)
                    ---
Communication: 2 (Bargaining, Deception, Leadership); Constitution*: 3 (Swimming); Cunning: 2 (Military Lore); Dexterity*: 2 (Light Blades); Magic: 3; Perception: 1; Strength*: 4 (Heavy Blades); Willpower: 2 (Courage, Faith, Self-Discipline)
                    ---
                    Specializations: Templar (N)
Talents: Armor Training (N), Throwing Weapon Style (J), Two-Hander Style (J)
Stunt Bonuses: Mighty Blow (1 sp with two-handed weapons); can reload throwing weapons as a free action
                    ---
                    Speed: 8 (12 without armor); Defense: 12; Armor: 8
                    Health: 67; Mana: --
Attack: Two-handed Sword +6 (3d6+4) or thrown dagger +5 (damage 1d6+4, range 6/12, reload free action/thrown weapon style)
                    ---
Equipment: Backpack, traveler's garb, waterskin, two-handed sword, throwing knives, light plate armor, 3d6+50 silver pieces.

Ravi is the current Viscount of Kaiten in Dragon Age Legends. He is a former templar who formed a group of warriors that banded together to prevent an abomination from destroying the Free Marches city of Kaiten in a hedonistic orgy of narcissism and opulence.

For this build I used the optional rules described here. Basically, despite being a 'low-level' character, Ravi gets a progression that grants more ability advancements, a couple of extra focuses, a little more health and the Templar specialization.

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------

                    placeholder for more characters

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules, etc. NEW: Dragon Age Legends

I have fond memories of Dragon Age Legends - it consumed many hours of my life! I'd like to see some of the lore pop up in the main computer games, but I'm not aware it ever has.

I'd forgotten Ravi is a former Templar. One DA Inquisition Templar I'd be interested to see your stats for is Ser Delrin Barris, as he's about to appear in my campaign.

                      Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your kind words. I also have good memories of DAL and even played it a little in the last couple of days (yeah, my game still works!)

As for Barris... I'm going to try to write up something for him.

Re: DRAGON AGE STUFF: Characters, Creatures, Optional Rules, etc. NEW: New Optional Rules

                          Guys.

I'm thinking about collecting all optional rules and ideas present here in the forums into a "Dragon Age Hacked" document. Essentially, it would be a collection of optional rules and rules expansions for GMs to use and get inspiration from. I started collecting my own house rules into a document today, but I'm willing to put stuff from others.

                          What do you guys think?

I think it is a good idea and could be useful for some people looking to change things up a bit.
I've been doing something like this for my own rules and campaigns. So many things are scattered in various places that I forget I have some of it. lol
