  • Runes on Mage Staffs

How should rules work for runes on mage staffs? A Novice Fire Rune, for example - does it add one damage to all damage-causing spells, or only fire-based damage?
Does it add damage to Arcane Lances?
Does it add damage when the staff is used in close combat?

Also, in DA: Inquisition, only Spirit Runes can be allocated to staffs. Would they have any unique properties in our pen-and-paper game, do you think?

RAW, runes only seem to affect physical attacks, those requiring attack rolls.

For mages, arcane lances are physical attacks and require attack rolls. I would allow runes to affect them as they would affect any other ranged attack.

In my games, I'd say yes, for all the reasons above.

Nope, but overall I don't like DA:I 'rules'... but on the other hand, staves don't get runes in DA:O.

So, in summary, in our games I treat arcane lance/melee staff attacks as physical attacks similar to melee/ranged attacks from any other weapon. If you consider DA:O, staves shouldn't receive runes (but arcane lances should never miss).
