  • [AGE System - Any] Monk Class?

With several different games coming out using the AGE system, I am curious: Do any of them contain a Monk class? Failing that, do any good fan creations of Monk classes exist for the game?

Re: [AGE System - Any] Monk Class?

i created one for my own game...i only got to level 5 but it is a good start

MONK: Monks are diplomats, willing to sit down and talk things out; but, they are masters of hand-to-hand combat. They are a spiritual people that have a thriving culture based on peace.
WG: Brawling, Staves, Either Light Blades or Bludgeons
    Primary Stats: COMM, CON, PERC
    Health: 25+CON
    Level 1:
    Lore Talent Novice level
    Unarmed Combat Style Novice level
Heightened Awareness: By making a Minor Action, you become extremely aware of the battlefield. You negate the bonus for Backstab attempts but it will not reveal an invisible foe. You also add a +2 to your Defense while this is active. This only lasts for rounds equal to your Willpower Score
Pick Two: Chirurgy, Iron Will, or Vitality at Novice Level

    Level 2:
    New Talent

    Level 3:
Stunt Bonus: You use the Lighting Attack Stunt for 2 SP instead of the normal 3

    Level 4:
    New Talent

    Level 5:
Martial Discipline: Pick one Weapon Style you do not already have. You get its Novice level, ignoring any requirements

So you know; Vitality and Iron Will are my own Talents and here they are as well...

    Iron Will
    Requirements: WILL 2+
NOVIE: reroll and failed WILL (Courage) Tests, but you must keep the second roll
JOURNEYMAN: Can use Tower of Will Stunt for 3SP instead of 4
MASTER: +1 to all WILL (Self-Discipline) tests

    Vitality
    Requirements: CON 2+
NOVICE: Gain a +2 to your Health; this is a onetime bonus
JOURNEYMAN: you gain a +1 to all CON (Stamina) Tests
MASTER: You gain a +1 to all CON (Environmental Resistance) Tests

I kinda built those to go along side the Monk. this is just prototype stage but here you go. enjoy.

It really doesn't need its own class - it could just be a specialization. There would be lots of overlap with warrior if it were its own class.

Yeah, a combination of talents and a specialization is how I'd go, too. If you want something that looks more like a D&D monk, you might need some additional talents to cover some of the ground (and they'd have some paranormal qualities to them, so you'd want to make sure that's what you want).

          I might do something like:

          Prerequisites: STR/DEX 3, Brawling Focus

Novice: When fighting unarmed, gains +1 SP and all attacks are considered Piercing.

Journeyman: When fighting unarmed, gains +1 additional SP and may add [WIL, DEX, or CUN] to damage (not sure which would fit best).

Master: When fighting unarmed, gains +1 additional SP and may re-roll damage.

May not be balanced, but unarmed fighting is really weak.

good idea; i would go with DEX on the Journeyman level myself. But the class i posted earlier is the way i built it for my game; in which i expanded the classes a bit to make it a bit more like D&D. but, this version as a Specialization is pretty damned good.

Re: [AGE System - Any] Monk Class?

I had a monk specialization I was working on the Final Fantasy Tactics/FFXII monks. I don't have it with me right now so I'll have to look it up in the next day or so, but I remember it had a Prerequisite of the Unarmed Style (Novice) talent (the fist damage is upped to 1D6 instead of 1D3) and at one of the levels (probably master) gained the ability to Dual Wield both of their fists at the full 1D6 damage and adding the full STR instead of half for the second fist. We never played it, so I didn't get around to seeing how powerful this monk was compared to other specializations. I was mostly trying to give my players incentive to play as the monk.

I feel monks would be based more on Rogues than warriors.

true, monks are very DEX-based and so are rogues but they are trained in many martial arts, making them more along a cross-class basis at that point. maybe the basics of Stats from the rogue with the power and focus of a warrior. They are nimble and very agile but retain power in every essence. so i would cross-class it if you stick with strait-up Dragon Age.

The post i made earlier again is for my game that takes more traditional D&D classes and unites them with the AGE system. i like my version but any route decided is yours to take, so take my posts as you wish.

I could see that, but I think rogues have too many ranged combat abilities that I don't really see with monks.

Re: [AGE System - Any] Monk Class?

My ideal Monk would be a little bit of everything, not unlike old-school D&D Monks. Look perhaps to the Diablo III Monk as another good example. She has speed and mobility, but can strike hard, and even wields some powers that seem mystical to others (and for good reason). She is no Mage, nor is she a Rogue, but she shares some traits with them, while differing in substantial ways. Perhaps the Warrior is her closest "cousin," since both train mind and body for focus, strength, and self-improvement. However, the Monk seeks enlightenment, transcendence, and attainment of mystic awareness only Mages might otherwise seek.

I think once I can somehow get the complete core rulebook PDF (and I'm looking forward to Blue Rose; I understand Spirit Dancers are similar to Monks) I'll probably just write one up myself. I think it'd be fairly easy to add flavor for any given setting as needed—in Dragon Age, it's simple enough to say that an ancient order of Monks has long trained and strengthened their spirits to battle the Darkspawn.
