  • Wonder Woman (2017)

Anyone gone out and seen the movie yet? I'm taking my niece for her birthday this weekend, but I was surprised there was not thread for the film started yet. Anybody have any none spoiler thoughts to share?

    Re: Wonder Woman (2017)

I enjoyed it a lot. Diana's naiveté might be played up a bit too much, but overall it works. Diana may not understand the world outside Themyscara, but that's not going to stop her from doing what she thinks is right.
Gal Gadot does a great job at both the compassionate woman and the warrior trying to end the war.
Chris Pine is charming as always.
The rest of Steve's merry band is interesting and well done.

My first time seeing the Justice League trailer before this movie, and actually feeling somewhat optimistic about that, too.

      Re: Wonder Woman (2017)

I'm sure YouTube will soon have an "everything wrong with Wonder Woman clip" soon enough.... There were a few plotholes, and I feel the ending was rushed...

Gotta say though... at about the half way mark... the scene is in the trailers of her crossing the battlefield... So well done. Truly epic. Truly Wonder Woman and quite possibly the most heroic scene in a DCEU movie to date. I wanted to cheer.

        Re: Wonder Woman (2017)

Just watched it with a friend. I was honestly surprised at how good it was. Not good as in, "awesome, this is better than GOTG!" but rather, "this is well done, does things a lot of superhero movies don't, and actually feels meaningful." Now, I've never paid much attention to Wonder Woman, so this is mostly from a background of ignorance about the character. And, mandatory preface: this is all my opinion.

The movie was a bit long. It had minor details that really could have been done better. And, sadly, DC still seems to be visually too dark far too often. But overall, yes, I do think it was good: a solid 7/10, for those into that sort of rating.

Diana's actions were entirely driven by her character, and realistically, as opposed to the awful Man of Steel where he's so cryptic and dull he just becomes some abstract figure doing things for the sake of the plot. This, to me, was the best part: her character. The entire "you're not going to tell me what I'm going to do" schtick was in full effect, but considering her background, and total commitment to truth and right (she felt a lot like Captain America) it totally works for her. The plot isn't exactly complex, but it's solid enough to introduce the character and set her up in our world, and the supporting cast does well enough to round that out, despite sometimes seeming underused. Themyscara is beautiful, and the Amazonian culture at least feels substantial, and not like a rushed invention to justify WW's origins.

And... yeah, I'll go ahead and touch on the feminist angle too. Admittedly, I was somewhat hesitant to watch this because I suspected there might be ridiculous levels of man-hating and double standards in the movie. That really wasn't present. Sure, there's a joke about how unnecessary men are, from the point of view of an Amazon, but this isn't hammered into some confirmation of how right their view was. Diana wasn't shrill and preachy (despite speaking her mind as needed,) and she wasn't simply trying to "out-man the men"... her femininity remained intact despite running boldly into gunfire and causing damage with her bare hands that would even make Thor smile. She showed remarkable strength of will while remaining compassionate and sensitive, and even her somewhat overdone innocence and naivete was tempered by her eventual willingness to take the world as it is without feeling a need to uproot it and demand unrealistic change. And while some might say the final battle or her conclusions during it were cheesy or bland, I've got to say it made me really side with the character, and was meaningful on a level that no Batman, Superman or DCU movie to date has been (although The Dark Knight came close, and The Dark Knight Returns... well, it tried.)

Bluntly, this is by far the best DCU movie to date, and I almost cringe at the thought of watching Diana alongside the thin caricatures that I can't help but believe will populate the upcoming Justice League movie. "Wonder Woman" is not the sort of super-flashy eye-candy that I could watch again immediately after watching it once... but it's definitely good, and I definitely will watch it again.

I feel this is really going to propel Wonder Woman as the front and center flagship character for DC much as what happened for Iron Man and Marvel.

Yeah, that was really the only one of the fight scenes that really worked for me (Well, that and the Amazons vs. Germans). And about half of the humor just kinda fell flat for me. Like they were going for MCU style irreverence, but just missed the mark. And I really started to flag about an hour and a half in. With the third act just being kinda "meh" for me.

That said, that first hour and a half, and the character interaction was really damn good. Like, I could go for an entire movie about Diana and company just kinda chilling out in post-war Europe.

I'm already seeing jokes about Justice League being rebranded as Wonder Woman and the Justice League.

I thought it was a rather good film.

Sort of wish the pacing, action, and overall scene style at the end of the film was more like at that around the middle of the film (which was just awesome, IMO), but otherwise is was pretty great. I liked the Amazons, I liked Diana, I liked Steve Trevor... the supporting cast was okay too... and the villains were... well the villains were rubbish, but whatever... overall, I really enjoyed it.

It only took the cowardly bastards nine years. I've been barking for this film since Ironman made his debut. One could hope it propels DC to actually give her the type of artistic talent normally reserved for Batman and not even since Perez and Wolfman.

DC finally has their Captain America after tossing Superman into the darkside. Although I do hope they keep the touch of Natasha we saw in her in SvB.

                    I think they will.

If you consider the bookends of the movie - set in the present as it were - it seems she's up to something...

Noticed something in rewatching the village liberation scene... Charlie is the Marksman, and I get the PTST (which is a great character point IMO) but anyone notice the real marksman was Trevor? Check him picking off soldiers in the No Man's Land scene...

Not a movie ruining point, but something I noticed...

I had chalked that up to them showing that Charlie *normally* is their marksman, but that his personal issues had been getting worse, and Trevor had to take over his role for the scene. Illustrating how the war had been taking its toll on him.

That's how I made sense of it, anyway.

I felt that two, but Trevor's marksman abilities were before we saw Charlie seize up... still, fair point.

                            My thoughts...

I agree with several posters already in that this is the best DCEU film to date. I'll go a step further and compare it to Marvel's first Iron Man film. Both have perfectly cast leads, and both are amazing for the first two acts, before ending with a disappointingly cliche and uninspired battle with a big bad.

On the feminism note, I too was pleasantly surprised at how understated it was, and that she was portrayed as a real woman who also had her desire for Steve.

                            spoilers in white:

The one thing I felt was forced was how it ended for Steve Trevor. He didn't have to die, but the movie went with the tired expendable male sacrifice cliche, while Dr. Poison this hateful evil genius is allowed to live. It's honestly a missed opportunity, because he could have been Diana's Peggy Carter, and she could have a poignant scene with him in his old age.
