Not a big fan of the grill or the "J" teardrop prison tattoo, but the rest is okay. A different look than any previous Joker, but...artistic license and all that.

        Re: Suicide Squad

I think I'd be a lot more on board with that look if they put a bit more effort into figuring tattoos that would suit the joker. And I don't mean the giant dragon on his back from ASBaR.

I like the "J" teardrop, the playing cards on his neck -- though if it was a dead man's hand, that would be better than four aces -- and I really like the big grinning mouth on the forearm. However, the "damaged" on the forehead and all the "HA"s seem a bit too on the nose.

The teeth are interesting. Makes me wonder if there will be a scene of Affleck's Batman knocking out his original teeth.

I'm not sure I like the design, but it is definitely an intimidating look.

            Don't want.

But seriously, it does make me wonder when the Joker had all that ink done. I mean those are some pretty detailed tattoos. That's multiple, multiple sessions and with a pretty decent artist. We're talking hours and hours in the chair just to look like he was designed by Ed Hardy.

I just want there to be one scene in the movie where the Joker can't threaten Gotham because he has to get his tattoos touched up.

              Re: Suicide Squad

something about that still is off.. like, the Joker should be somewhat disturbing.. and that photo seems almost.. happy.. like Jared Leto is elated to finally have a job..

"Can you believe this guys?!? I'm the Joker!?! I'm bada$$!!"

All of which can be made up for with great acting. It's not my cup of tea, but doesn't mean I won't try it.

Course, that being said, a) not sure why Joker needs to be in this movie to begin with and b) Will Smith as Deadshot is far worse than this..

                  Re: Suicide Squad

This could either turn out really good or be horrible. With such a drastic change in the Jokers look from previous cinematic portrayls it is difficult to see a middle ground. They are probably having the Joker in the film to have a big name character just like casting Will Smith was probably to make the movie have a big named actor.

                        Re: Suicide Squad

And all of those are "correct" interpretations of the Joker-the character's been around for longer than the current government of France. And all three of those actors have Oscars, which is kinda impressive (granted, only one was for playing the Joker, but still). Also, Leto's Joker won't actually have tattoos in the film.

I mentioned this in the Dawn of Justice thread, but its kinda impressive to see how several of the actors in this movie are fairly well-lauded.

                        Deadshot-Two Oscar noms.
                        Amanda Waller-Same as above.
                        The Joker-One Oscar.

Not something you'd expect of a comic book movie even as recently as ten years ago. (Although Nicholson already had two Oscars by the time he played the Joker but he's kind of an outlier)

                            Re: Suicide Squad

Well...Heath Ledger's Joker looked like the Joker in the same way Anne Hathaway's Catwoman looked like Catwoman. There's enough of the character there to make the connection, but it really wasn't a strict interpretation visually. Plus I remember all the hootin' and hollering before The Dark Knight and all the apocalyptic predictions of how bad Ledger was for the part. People tend to readjust their stances in retrospect, but I try to keep my memory firm on these things because I revel in the fact people are such hypocrites about these things. Now, in the name of full disclosure...I wasn't impressed with Ledger's Joker at the time and remain unimpressed to this day, BUT, I dislike the character as a general rule, so it takes alot for me to appreciate any Joker.

It's a bit like Star Wars. When Star Wars was released in 1977, the critics panned it. Nowadays those very same critics like to pretend they all recognized it as this groundbreaking "thing", but the truth of the matter is far more respect was given to "Close Encounters".

My prediction is this: Leto will do a decent job and suddenly all the doomsday predictors will be trumpeting the way he "made the character his" and will do their level best to diminish all their doomsaying...because people are hypocrites. That's just human nature.

Personally, I thought he'd be good anyway.

He's consistently turned in good performances for years (I actually underestimated how old he is and thus how long he's been working) Prefontaine, Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyer's Club, and more.

The thing with Ledger and Leto is that most comic book fans are probably not likely to have seen their more critically acclaimed film work like Brokeback Mountain or Prefontaine and more acquainted with stuff like 10 Things I Hate About You and Fight Club (in which Leto has a minor but fairly memorable role).

Same thing with Hathaway. She was great in Rachel Getting Married but I doubt many Dark Knight Rises viewers saw that one either.

I'm not super pumped for Suicide Squad in general, but Leto (and Will Smith for that matter) were never a problem for me.

And like I noted, the Joker pictures with the tattoos are not his actual in-movie appearance. Not that anything could be worse than that Prefontaine mustache anyway. Yikes.
