  • Overwatch: Cinematic Trailer and Character Trailers

Anyone check this out yet? This looks like someone took one of those action cartoons from the 80's, where you had an extremely diverse group of heroes and villains whose abilities mainly revolved around their gear and training, gave them a Pixar style visual upgrade, and made a Team Fortress 2 style FPS with them. Here's a playlist of the some of the characters released thus far.

I forsee a lot of Overwatch builds in the future. Heck, this looks like an animated series I'd happily follow. Bravo Blizzard, you've made something that feels more like a good comic IP than what either of the Big Two are putting out.

Also, here's the official website, with background info on the characters themselves: http://us.battle.net/overwatch/en/

Hmmmmm, the trailer might do, but the gameplay videos feel more transhumanism, than super-hero to me, but your mileage may vary. Still it could be a fun game to play, depending on how well executed it is on the technical side.... Though to be fair I said that about Tomb Raider as well & that game was terrible. Fingers crossed this one turns out alright.

Funny you should mention TF2, because that's the first thing that came to my mind watching the game play too & I have quite enjoyed TF2 in the past.

Blizzard's cinematics are always superlative, but even the game play video made this look really fun. The colourful cast of characters already seem like they'd be excellent subjects for some expanded stories, but unfortunately lore has not exactly been Blizzard's strong suit in the past.

I'll probably give 'Overwatch' a shot when it comes out. Even more likely if it's released for consoles. I'd like to see what they do with the world they're building, but I won't be rushing out to purchase any novels.

I can see that, especially with the talking gorilla and the zen robot, but to me, the visuals combined with the backstory feels more like a supers game. Granted, its more of a superhero game where the heroes all supplement their skills and/or abilities with technology, but its still a group of characters, both heroic and villainous, in distinctive costumes with code names, with unique abilities, skills and weapons, fighting each other in a fantastic environment. Its more towards the Ben 10/Generator Rex style of superheroism, but the trailer especially makes it feel like it could be a fun series if they wanted to do more with the IP.

Though I think it wouldn't be unfair to say that if you put the Superhero genre on one side, and Transhumanism on the other, Overwatch would meet somewhere in the middle. Though again, the clear 'good vs evil', uniforms and such make me lean more towards the former genre than the latter.

Funny you should mention TF2, because that's the first thing that came to my mind watching the game play too & I have quite enjoyed TF2 in the past.
From what I understand, the TF2 feel was deliberate on Blizzard's part. They wanted to make a FPS where the character you played was more important than whatever gun you might pick up, so that each character has a specific role, a specific set of strengths and weaknesses, and thus you need actual teamwork to succeed. Frankly, this kind of class based gameplay is much more appealing to me than your usual FPS where what you can do depends entirely on what gun you picked up.

Were to me its more like Transhumanism by way of a Pixar movie, since Pixar movies always have the highly colourful characters, with very specific code-names or descriptive names, easy to grasp characterisation & abilities that you can easily toy-ify into an entire line of toys.

But like I said, your mileage may vary

Should be a fun game to try. It'll certainly be better than playing Defiance, which is what I'm currently playing.

Can't say for sure if it'll be fun or not, but I love the character designs so much I want to drizzle them on pancakes.

Corporations creating supers for espionage, assassination and open combat and eleven out of twelves characters whose powers come entirely from advanced tech... That's transhumanism.

The global police force, obviously "villain" characters like Reaper and Widowmaker, and the "Omnic Crisis" are all super.

                  Super-intelligent gorillas work with either.

I'll call it "supers with a heavy, transhuman bias."

I'm not big on PvP shooters, but the characters and animation sure look kewl. I'd like to test drive the game using Tracer's powers... But Reaper and Winston both just look so awesome.

(NOTE: In most video games, I tend to either play some sort of tank or sniper... So Widowmaker is pretty tempting.)

Well, depending on who you ask that is not transhumanist at all. For some, transhumanism only applies to using technology in an effort to uplift the human species as a whole. Not that the game is likely to say much about the underlying philosophical aspects, anyway. Besides, the gorilla is clearly engaging in transgorillism instead. Personally, I'll just call "using technology for the creation of super-humanly powerful assets for combat and espionage" supersoldierism or something XD

Corporations creating supers for espionage, assassinations and open combat is also very comic book/supers as well, especially with Overwatch being a SHIELD analogy. Even with just the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies we've got Black Widow (espionage), Winter Soldier (assassinations), and Iron Man/War Machine (open combat). You've even got folks like Tracer whose powers are internal, but she's got a device to help her regulate said powers, X-Men style.

True enough. I posted my impressions and did little to accurately convey the rationalizations behind my overall assessment (ie "I got lazy")... But I'll stick with my assessment of the setting as "supers with a heavy, transhuman bias."

                        YMMV.
