  • Finding Silver Bullets

It's not directly a superhero thing, but I found fascinating this article on the difficulty of creating silver bullets. I'd never really thought about how readily literary characters seem to go about it... it's apparently quite a challenge. Also calls the Lone Ranger's credentials into question.

Hmm, interesting article, especially with my Hunter submission in Ratgirl's game.

When they hit the section talking about whether a lower purity round would work and doing an amalgamum round or silver nitrate, I thought of at least 1 option they overlooked: silver solder. You are only going to find it in 5-10% purity as far as % silver, but part of the other components get burned off by your melting process anyway. Still your end product is going to be lucky to be 20% pure. The melting point is actually even much lower than lead (most silver solder melts under 200C so 375-400F range), instead of pure silver being almost triple lead's melting point so that part would be really easy.

The easy answer, as they pointed out, is silver shot in a shotgun shell.

Usually any characters that I've done in a game were silver weapons were important was just a thin coat of silver over a traditional iron or steel weapon, but most of those were melee weapons not bullets.

Some curiousity and a couple google results later, found a few sites that sell functioning silver bullets (and a bunch selling silver "coins" shaped as bullets but not functional). The only problem is that it's going to cost you $50-75 per bullet.

Thanks FB. This was hilarious, and since my roommate is a gunsmith, I printed out the whole thing for him to take into the shop. The guys will get a kick out of it, I'm sure.
