          • 512 - Power Girl

After all those Fantasy builds, it's time to get back to the superheroic world. And to get myself back in the superhero swing, I think we should kick it off with super heroines and have another run of the greatest J-Mart tradition, LADIES' NIGHT! Let's get with this one going with one of our all time best selling items freshly stocked on the Aisle 1 shelves!

What's everyone looking at me for? How am I supposed to distract...Oh... - Power Girl

            Toughness +16 (+8 Impervious), Fortitude +13, Will +9

            COMPLICATIONS:
How I am supposed to distract…? Oh…: Power Girl is not afraid to flaunt her female attributes, which sometimes causes unwanted distraction and allows others to make ill-informed judgments of her character.
Power Loss: Power Girl loses her powers and her Str and Sta are reduced to 2 under a red sun, like that of Krypton, and other effects draining or interfering with the energies of the yellow sun can deprive her of her powers.
Relationships: She is close with the Superman family especially Kal-L and Lois Lane of Earth-2.
Responsibility: Power Girl feels a strong sense of responsibility to use her powers for the benefit of all and try to live up the standards her cousin has set.
Secret Identity: She has a secret identity of Karen Starr.
Temper: Power Girl has a short fuse. Especially with chauvinists…
Vulnerable: Power Girl is as vulnerable to magic as anyone else. Her Toughness is not Impervious against magical attacks and she loses her ranks of Protection against magical attacks.
Weakness: Earth-2 Kryptonite...Its radiation saps the Strength and powers of Kryptonians, leaving them impaired, disabled, and eventually debilitated in terms of Strength and power effects. Long-term exposure (usually a matter of minutes, less for a large enough amount) imposes the dying condition and may lead to death.

            Abilities 94 + Skills 22 (44 ranks) + Advantages 9 + Powers 102 + Defenses 18 = 245 / 245

Build Comments: Power Girl is a J-Mart franchise staple. When I figured it was time for another LADIES' NIGHT, I knew I had to kick this one off with her. Not a lot of changes in this rebuild, but another new pic and I have to say, throwing out the fanservice part, I like that costume design a lot. The change of the opening to the diamond shape is something that should happen in main DC continuity because it just seems to make sense and make her more in line with the rest of the Superman family.

Secret Origins: In the dimension of Earth-5151, Kara's father discovers that Krypton is about to explode, and places her in a spacecraft directed towards the Earth. Although this occurs at the same time that Kal-L's ship is launched, Kara's ship travels more slowly, and she arrives on Earth decades after her cousin has landed. Kara’s Symbioship is designed to keep her in stasis during the journey and provide her with life experiences and education in the form of virtual reality. The Symbioship allowed her to interact with virtual copies of her parents and fellow Kryptonians. By the time she arrives on Earth, Kara was about eighteen years old developmentally.

The Story so Far: Power Girl's existence is not revealed to the general public until much later; her cousin Clark and his wife Lois Lane provide her a family environment to assist her transition towards real life relationships. In her first recorded adventure, Kara assists Justice Society members Flash and Wildcat with containing an artificially induced volcanic eruption in China. She then joined Robin and Star-Spangled Kid to form a Super Squad to assist the Justice Society in defeating Brainwave and Per Degaton, who were causing disasters around the world. Later, she became a full member of the Society when Superman retired from active membership.

Having been raised by the Symbioship with artificial Kryptonian life experiences, Power Girl found it difficult to adapt to life on Earth. However, with the help of reporter Andrew Vinson, she adopted the secret identity of computer programmer Karen Starr. Her closest friend was the Huntress, the daughter of the Earth-5151 Batman and Catwoman.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Power Girl survived and became a resident of Earth-5150. She lost her memories of her time on her home Earth, as did many of the beings that came from the alternate dimensions. During the Infinite Crisis, Kal-L himself returned to the post-Crisis DC Universe after breaking down the walls of the paradise dimension in which he, Lois Lane Kent (of Earth-5151), Alexander Luthor, Jr. (of Earth-269), and Superboy-Prime (of Earth-Prime) had been living since the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Appalled by the rapidly-deteriorating state of affairs on the contemporary Earth, their goal is to replace the post-Crisis Earth with a recreated Earth-5151. Kal-L's first order of business was to track down Power Girl and explain the events of the original Crisis to her. Kal-L also reiterates her pre-Crisis history as his cousin. A touch from the ailing Lois of Earth-Two inexplicably restores Power Girl's memories of pre-Crisis Earth-Two.

Soon after this revelation, Power Girl was confronted by Superboy-Prime, who rendered her unconscious. She was attached to a ”tuning fork,” a device controlled by Alex Luthor whose purpose is to bring back the multiple Earths. Alex Luthor and Psycho Pirate coerce Black Adam into saying "SHAZAM!," and use the now-raw magical energy to power the tower. After the reappearance of the created Earth-5151, everyone associated with that Earth is transported onto it.

After being brought to the barren created Earth-Two by Kal-L, Lois Lane Kent collapsed and died. A violent confrontation between the he and Superman of Earth-5150 ensuee, at the end of which Kal-L comes to the realization that this created Earth-5151 had not been a perfect world, since "a perfect earth doesn't need a Superman."

Power Girl was freed by Wonder Girl and Kon-El, and joined them in fighting Superboy-Prime and Alex Luthor. During a savage battle on Mogo, Superboy-Prime nearly beat Kal-L to death and is later subdued by Kal-El. Power Girl is brought to Mogo by the Green Lantern Corps just in time to help save her dying cousin.

Power Girl later rejoined the Justice Society Initiative along with Kal-L and has remained heavily involved in metahuman affairs.

Characterization: Kara remains in a leader in the superhero community and her tenaciousness and power have earned her the respect of superhumans across the galaxy.

Friends and Foes: Karen is close to both Kal-El and Kal-L, along with Kal-El’s wife, Lois Lane-Kent. She and Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, initially had a strange relationship with each being leery of “themselves” but over time, they have gotten to be friends.

She has become a regular foe of the Ultra-Humanite and the Hellqueen. She also has a recurring rivalry with her clone, Divine.

              Abilities 88 + Skills 23 (46 ranks) + Advantages 7 + Powers 103 + Defenses 15 = 236 / 236

Build Comments: Since I built Power Girl, I felt the need to build Supergirl, too since I basically copied their power sets for each other.

Not a lot to say about Kara that I didn't cover in the Power Girl build, really. I didn't that whole crystal thing she did for a while since I didn't read anything with it and I didn't really care for it anyway. In my setting, she is part of the Justice League, filling in Clark's shoes as team paragon.

Mad props to sXeven from Deviant Art for an awesome pic.

Secret Origins: Kara Zor-El is the daughter of Superman's uncle Zor-El and his wife Alura. Kara is actually older than Kal-El (Superman); she was a teenager when he was a baby. When Krypton was attacked by Brainiac, he took Kandor with him, while Kara and her parents remained in Argo. After Brainiac's attack, her father created a force-field around Argo using a Brainiac Probe. When Brainiac came to consume Argo City, her parents had no choice but to send her in a rocket headed for Earth. However, her rocket was caught in a large kryptonite-encrusted meteor and she arrived on Earth years after her cousin did.

The Story so Far: After some initial confusion, Kara was found by Superman and trained by Wonder Woman. She was captured by Darkseid, and after being brainwashed, attacked her own cousin. Superman defeated her and returned her to Earth, where he faked her death so Darkseid would not come looking for her.

She then assumed the role of Supergirl. However, she felt out of place, not sure where she really belonged. Kara was uncomfortable with her cousin's over-protectiveness, and she could not hang out with her Earth-Two counterpart Power Girl since their powers went haywire whenever they touched. She found kindred spirits in her other "cousin" Superboy and fellow alien Starfire.

She has since been a member of the Teen Titans, Justice League, Avengers, Defenders and Outsiders in addition to having many adventures on her own.

Characterization: Kara is outgoing, energetic and unafraid. She occasionally has trouble assimilating to Earth life due to her formative years being on Krypton, but she’s come a long way in a short time.

Friends and Foes: She is close to all the members of the Superman family, particularly Clark and Lois.

Enemy: Scarlet Spider, Spider-Man and Speed Demon.
Thrills: She is a total hedonist and craves excitement and often commits crimes or does inappropriate things just for the thrill of it.

                Abilities 80 + Skills 26 (52 ranks) + Advantages 8 + Powers 22 + Defenses 14 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: Really dug Joystick in the limited stuff I’ve read with her in it. Some may not be familiar with Joystick, but she rocks, especially as a bad girl gone good, then bad again, which did one a great Thunderbolts arc. She was a former Marvel villain who became a Thunderbolts member, then turned on the team (shocker). Now, of course, you expect The Thunderbolts to do that sort of thing, but the way she did and her reasons were very well written, even if the overall plot was the usual implausible “cosmic game” thing comic writers do with characters like the Grandmaster and such.

She started out a Spidey villain and as such, she has some of the usual powerset that allows people to hang with him: enhanced strength, speed and a gimmick power, her Joysticks.

Secret Origins: Virtually nothing is known of the past of Janice before she first appeared as Joystick, including the origin and nature of her apparent superhuman powers. When she was much younger, her father, a gambler, taught her his philosophy to 'always have a card to play'. She then used this philosophy to great advantage when she helped a mobster rob her father to save her own life. Later, she was a student at the University of Arizona, living a life she later considered to be a bore. After her sophomore year, something happened to change her, apparently resulting in her death; in her "new life," she became determined to live life on the edge, and began taking extreme risks. She then disappeared for three years before reappearing as Joystick.

The Story so Far: Joystick then joined the Crimson Cowl's Masters of Evil. She was one of the Masters ambushed and stripped by the Thunderbolts as part of their plan to infiltrate the Cowl's base. She bounced around from job to job, whatever sounded thrilling and challenging at the time, and eventually joined the new Thunderbolts. She didn't get along well with the rest of the group, and was revealed to be working for the Grandmaster. She attacked Speed Demon, showing that she possessed superhuman speed similar to his. It was revealed that the Grandmaster's plot was for Joystick to steal Zemo's Moonstones.

Characterization: Janice is a thrill-seeker and loves to get in trouble just because. She also loves a challenge, which is why she often tries to completely destroy her opponents mentally as well as physically.

Friends and Foes: Whoever can give her the best time when she wants it. She’s currently working out of Chicago with Midnight’s Fire mainly because she has a thing for Nightwing.

Nice builds Thorp, but...about those models. Supergirl looks like Megan Fox, but since the top on her outfit is literally painted on, I have to wonder whether that's not just the result of a model that has similar features and some clever use of lighting. Since Megan spends more time than necessary proclaiming how she'll never do nude scenes again...which is fine as long as she learns to...y'know...act.

Powergirl on the other hand is awesome, but you'd never actually get a woman built like that playing a super-heroine in a movie. I mean, she's got actual muscles. Not body builder muscles, but fitness model type muscles and hollywood is still kind of allergic to muscles on women.

After turning out to be one of the best things about Fabian Nicieza's Thunderbolts run, I miss Joystick.

I was never overly fond of Eberon, but the setting had a variant of the 3.x DMG's Eldritch Knight prestige class — the Knights Phantom, IIRC — that specialized in fighting as light cavalry from the backs of Phantom Mounts. Yes, the oft-overlooked low level utility spell.

Since I've been a diehard fan of the Conjuration/Summoning School ever since specialist wizards were introduced in AD&D1e; am especially partial to mounted combatants; and have a penchant for stealthy-scouty type characters... Well, I'm not to proud to admit I flat-out begged every GM to use them in multiple campaigns, Eberon or otherwise.

Revenge: Jade does not take well to slights.
                      Rivalry: With Elektra.

                      Abilities 76 + Skills 50 (100 ranks) + Advantages 35 + Powers 26 + Defenses 16 = 203 / 203

Build Comments: When H&VI first came out, I, like several people, were taken aback by Cheshire’s PL. I never saw her as a PL12. Then I did some reading in the Secret Six where she did kick some serious ass. And such and you know what? I STILL don’t think she’s a PL12. So she goes to a more reasonable PL10 in my setting, which is still good enough to hang with most of the street level heroes and with her ability to feint and her poisons, she is not a foe to be taken lightly.

And again, she was another C-D league character that Young Justice made great. It's still one of the great young injustices that it got cancelled.

Secret Origins: Born to a French father and a Vietnamese mother, Jade Nguyen had an unhappy childhood and was sold into slavery. This trauma ultimately drove her insane, and paved her way into becoming one of the world's most ruthless mercenaries.

The Story so Far: After killing her master, Jade was informally adopted by Chinese freedom fighter Weng Chan, who taught her all he knew about guerrilla fighting. She acquired knowledge of poisons from Kruen Musenda, a famed African assassin known as the "Spitting Cobra" and to whom she was married for the two years prior to his death.

She was a long-standing rival of the superhero team the Teen Titans. However, when Roy Harper, a.k.a. the archer Arsenal, went undercover for the government in a mission to get her confidence and turn her over, the two fell passionately in love. Knowing he would not be able to turn her in, he walked out; Cheshire would not learn his true identity until years later. The result of their romance was a daughter, Lian, whom Roy is raising. Despite her own shortcomings, Jade loves her daughter.

Returning to her mercenary ways after leaving Lian behind for Roy, Cheshire volunteered to join Tartarus, a group created by Vandal Savage with the objective of destroying the Titans. During a confrontation with the Titans and the H.I.V.E, Savage shot Cheshire to distract Arsenal. She recovered, but was taken into custody for her crimes.

She later escaped custody and became a member of the Secret Six. At this time, she developed a relationship with Thomas Blake, a.k.a. Catman, and became pregnant. She later betrayed the Secret Six to their archenemies, "The Society." However, she was shot and critically wounded by Deathstroke shortly afterwards, who didn't think the Society needed traitors like her in their ranks. Though apparently killed, she later resurfaced, living in a mansion in the Himalayan Mountains with her new son. Working with Vandal Savage again, she put out hits on the other members of the Secret Six except for Blake. Taking matters into her own hands, she stabbed The Mad Hatter, who was working with the Six. Her blade was poisoned and she later bartered the antidote to the poison to Catman in exchange for her safety.

She was later sent back to prison, but she received visits from Roy Harper and Lian occasionally. Her incarceration was only temporary however, and Cheshire was soon back out on the streets and still operates as a top assassin.

Characterization: Jade is considered by some to be the second most deadly assassin in the world, only topped by Lady Shiva.

Friends and Foes: She has a long, complicated relationship with Roy Harper and has had relationships with several men, including Catman with whom she also had a son. She does love her children, despite not being involved with them much, knowing that they are better off in the situations they are in.

I never read the comic Young Justice and saw like 2 episodes of the show, so I have to ask...is YJ where they gave her the silly cat mask? 90% of my experience with Cheshire comes from Teen Titans, where she was introduced (being a Wolfman/Perez creation) and I have to agree with your PL assessment. While she is formidable, she never seems to me to be in the PL12 class of formidable.

It was YJ where she got the mask. If I could have found a better picture of her that liked without it, I would have gone with it, but I really like that pic. I never thought she was a PL12 anymore than I thought Catman and Deadshot should have been PL11 or Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel were PL14.

Although I understand that Green Ronin was shooting for a "ripped from the comic pages" style of direct conversion when they wrote the Heroes & Villains books, part of me always thought they erred a bit.

The DC Universe is filled to bursting with legacies, apprentices, junior partners, and sidekicks. Usually in threes, sometimes duos, and occasionally as many as six or seven.

Superman, Supergirl, Superboy; The Batman, Nightwing, Robin, Spoiler; Wonder Woman, Donna Troy, Wonder Girl; Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel, Jr.; Black Canary II, Black Canary I; Flash II, Flash III, Flash I, Kid Flash II... Need I go on?

It would have been great to show how "PL Tiers" break down with these characters: he's a PL14 Clark, here's a PL12 Kara, here's a PL10 Connor... Here's Bruce as an over-pointed PL12, here's Dick as an over-pointed PL10 and here's Helena as a starting level PL10, here's Tim as an over-pointed PL 8, and here's Steph as a starting level PL8.

And so on and so forth.

I thought it looked Photoshopped, but I thought it was a fun pic. Upon reflection, it seems a bit too nippley for a family store like J-Mart, so I dumped the pic for something else that I really liked. I'm hoping Disney will buy me out since they're gobbling up all the over geek stuff.

And you are so on point about a potential Power Girl actress. I'd love to see more actresses with that models muscularity in lead roles, but I don't see it happening.

Especially considering that girl doesn't exist. There is, of course, the obvious photoshop work for the costume but besides that there is also, if memory is not failing me, this being a composite photo, arms from one picture, large natural-ish looking boobs from another, face from another (british actress Gemma Atkinson, if I'm not mistaken) and so on. The creator's gallery is full of this kind of work, though that Powergirl was the best thing in there at the time I looked
