My personal PL is higher than my lunch, so it seems to make sense to me.

Generally true. I've had some doubts on some meals.

Mayhaps. Although their PLs are deceiving. From a pure combat standpoint, Galactus would have a hard time hurting Mogo without a plot device. His best shot would be to use his Variable to go up to +29 Unarmed but even so, that's only a DC44 Toughness check for Mogo, which he could easily make every time with his +40 Toughness. Mogo could hit back at +22 with a Power Attack against Galactus' toughness of +28 so Big G, from a pure numbers standpoint, have to work harder for his lunch.

The big advantage G would have would be to try a Will based effect with his Variable since Mogo is "only" +20 there. It would probably just end up being a lot of rounds, a lot of no impact effects and a lot of collateral damage. A more interesting battle would be some GLs against a Herald that would be coming to prepare Mogo. In Thorpocaverse canon, you'd know that the Guardians and Galactus have some deals about him not eating Mogo, Oa and some other planets in exchange for them staying out of his business, but if Galactus was hungry enough, I'm sure some of that could go out the window.

How does the Thorpacoverse Orange Light interact with Galactus?

In my combined setting, Earth IV, I scaled back Galactus significantly. He was still a planet-killing threat, but not a Fundamental Cosmic Force.

            Coming up next...

Marvel's First Family, the Fantastic Four. I wasn't going to post them yet, but after I started looking at a lot of the Cosmic Marvel characters, it hit me that there wouldn't BE a Cosmic Marvel without the FF. Annihilus, Blastaar, Super-Skrull and of course, Galactus and the Heralds, among other players in the setting, all started out in the FF's book.

Despite their undeniable influence, they have waned in popularity over the years and even though Jonathan Hickman and others have had great runs on the book, the sales haven't been that great. A lot of what made the FF so popular in the Silver Age has either gone out of style or has been copied enough in other team books that it doesn't seem as engaging as before. Still, I've always liked them and I thought their change to the Future Foundation was a great move and allowed them to utilize Franklin and Valeria well.

I'm only going to stat the main fam and Doom for now, but look for another run with the FF kids, Mole Man, Wizard, etc. in the not too distant future. I have other things I want to get to before that.

Hadn't thought about it, actually...universe building is hard...

I like Big G being that cosmic force, although it can make it difficult to write him.

Billions of years ago, Larfleeze belonged to a small band of pirates which stole a number of artifacts from the planet Okaara, which had been under the strictest of quarantines by the Guardians of Oa for eons. As they escaped, long dormant Punisher robots awoke and pursued them, the Guardians their Manhunters to pursue the thieves as well. The Punishers and Manhunters, inevitably, battles one another and some of the pirates slipped past. Those left escaped discovered the journals belonging to the Watcher of Taa (Krona) that told of the great technological miracles created by Galan as he constructed hi world ship and became Galactus at the Dawn of time.

The guild followed the map into the Vega System to the planet Taa. There they discovered the remenants of the forge upon which Galactus built his great armor. Seized by the residual psychic energy that lingered after centuries of Galactus' unconstrained primordial presence that these walls had once held, Larfleeze became consumed by the same hunger.

He used the technology he found their to forge a Power Battery, trapping inside it some small essence of Galactus, forming the orange light of avarice.

My only problem with that origin is Galactus isn't particularly avaricious. Galactus eats because he has to, not because he wants to or is consumed with some unbridled gluttony or desire to possess. If Galactus were avaricious no Herald would ever win their freedom, because some possessed by avarice would never voluntarily set anything free and not only does the big G set them free, he doesn't even bother to retrieve the power from them, which is a fairly easy thing for him to do.

Actually, Galactus is fairly careless about the whole thing because in the long run, as long as his single goal is accomplished, nothing else means that much to him. That indicates he's pretty much the opposite of avaricious, since nothing holds great meaning for him and he only really seeks to have those things that help forward his ultimate goal of survival.

Galactus is a lot of things, but greedy isn't any of them.

Build Comments: Good old Reed Richards. He’s always the man in the Marvel U for inventions, so I figure he should have that +22 rank in Science and Tech. Other than that, he’s a PL10 on defense, and nowhere close to that on offense unless you use his Shapeshifting carefully.

Secret Origins: Born in Central City, California, Reed is the son of Evelyn and Nathaniel Richards. Nathaniel was a scientific genius, and Reed inherited a similar level of intellect and interests. A child prodigy with special aptitude in mathematics, physics, and mechanics, Reed Richards had enrolled in college by the time he was 14, attending such prestigious universities as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Columbia University, and Empire State University. By the age of 20, he had several degrees in the sciences under his belt.

It was at State that he met Benjamin J. Grimm. Reed had already begun designing a starship capable of traveling in hyperspace. Sharing his plans with his new roommate, Grimm jokingly volunteered to pilot the craft.

When 19-year old Reed continued his education by attending Columbia University in Manhattan, he rented a room in a boarding house owned by the aunt of a young girl named Susan Storm. To his embarrassment, the girl, who was 13, instantly fell in love with him. Even though Reed had to move on, she continued to carry a torch for Richards. Also while at Columbia, he met a brilliant fellow student, Victor Von Doom. In Richards, Doom met the first person who could match him intellectually; regarding Richards as his ultimate rival, Doom became increasingly jealous of Richards. Determined to prove he was better, Doom conducted reckless experiments which eventually scarred his face and would lead him to become Doctor Doom.

Moving on to Harvard, Reed earned Ph.D.s in Physics and Electrical Engineering while working as a military scientist, all this by the age of 22. Three years later, in his mid-20s, Reed used his inheritance, along with government funding, to finance his research. Determined to go to Mars and beyond, Richards based the fateful project in Central City. Susan Storm, now a young adult, moved into the area, and within a short time, found herself engaged to Reed. Due to her family's lucrative savings and involvement in charitable foundations, she provided more funding when his money ran out. Likewise, Reed's old college roommate, Ben Grimm, now a successful test pilot and astronaut, was indeed slated to pilot the craft.

All seemed well; however, when the government threatened to cut funding and cancel the project, Reed, Ben, Sue, and Sue's younger brother Johnny, agreed to sneak aboard the starship and take it up immediately. They knew they had not completed all the testing that had been planned, but Reed was confident they would be safe. Ben was initially skeptical about the unknown effects of radiation, while Reed theorized that their ship's shielding would be adequate to protect them.

It was on Reed's initiative that the fateful mission which had Susan Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm accompanying him into space took place. When their ship passed through the Van Allen belt they found their cockpit bombarded with nearly lethal doses of cosmic radiation. Reed had neglected to account for the abnormal radiation levels in the belt's atmosphere. The cosmic rays wreaked havoc on the starship's insufficient shielding and they were forced to return to Earth immediately. When they crash-landed they found that their bodies were changed dramatically. Reed's body was elastic and he could reshape any portion of his body at will. Susan Storm gained the ability to become invisible and eventually learned she could make other people and objects invisible and create objects of invisible force. Johnny burst into flame and soon realized he could fly. Ben got angry with and aggressive towards Reed which triggered a radical physical tranformation causing Ben to suddenly changed into a monstrous "thing." At his suggestion, they decided to use their new abilities to serve mankind as the Fantastic Four. Reed was chosen to lead the group, under the name "Mr. Fantastic".

He later told his daughter, by way of a bedtime story, that the reason he suggested they become adventurers and gave them such outlandish costumes and names as "Mister Fantastic" and "The Thing" was that he knew they would likely be hated and feared for their powers without such an over-the-top public image.

The Story so Far: The early career of the Fantastic Four led Mister Fantastic to a number of discoveries, and had their first encounters with many unusual characters. In the team's first appearance, they battled the Mole Man. They then battled the Skrulls. Soon after that, the team encountered the Sub-Mariner. They then had the first of many battles with Doctor Doom.

As the team leader, Mr. Fantastic created numerous exotic devices and vehicles for the team to use such as clothing made of 'unstable molecules' so that it can be used with their powers safely. Furthermore, he often leads the team into daring expeditions such as into the Negative Zone in addition to opposing evil. Also, he has felt personally responsible for Ben Grimm's grotesque change and has labored off and on to reverse it permanently.

Under his guidance, the team went on to become Earth's most celebrated band of heroes. Together, they would save the world countless times. Ever driven by his quest for knowledge, Reed is believed by most to be the Earth's foremost intelligence. There is little he cannot create, fix, or understand given time. The patents and royalties on his inventions alone have funded the group over the years.

However, there are drawbacks to his association with the team. Chief among them is the team's violent encounters with Doctor Doom, who believes that Reed was responsible for the accident that scarred him. Doom has never forgiven Reed and has sworn revenge. Doom has even gone as far as transforming Reed into a monstrous freak, attacking Reed's children and attempting to seduce Sue.

After many adventures as the Fantastic Four, Reed married Sue.[11] Not long after that, the team encountered the Inhumans for the first time. They next encountered Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Reed then opened a portal to the Negative Zone for the first time. Before long Reed and Sue had a baby, young Franklin Richards; the team battled Annihilus right before Franklin's birth. Franklin was a mutant with incredible powers, but, due to the cosmic ray alteration to his parents' DNA, they manifested while he was still very young. Franklin appears to have power that can rival a member of the Celestials; the power of a living god in the body of a small child. The couple briefly separated, and Reed further alienated Sue by shutting down Franklin's mind in order to prevent his power from causing global catastrophe; Sue Storm initiated divorce proceedings but the two were reconciled soon after.

After many other adventures, the FF were confronted by a being called Onslaught. Onslaught took control of an army of Sentinels and invaded New York City, hunting down every mutant being he could find. Onslaught wished to add the abilities of the godlike Franklin Richards to his own. Only through the apparent sacrifice of the Fantastic Four's own lives and that of many of the heroes in the was Onslaught finally vanquished. The heroes would have died then and there if not for Franklin, who created an alternate reality for them to reside in. Completely oblivious to what had taken place, Reed and his compatriots relived most of their lives. In their absence the Fantastic Four's headquarters, Four Freedoms Plaza, was annihilated by a super villain group called the Masters of Evil, posing as heroes, The Thunderbolts. One year later, Franklin returned with his family along with the other heroes from the parallel reality. Reed was overjoyed to see his son again, but he and the rest of the FF found themselves without a home, moving into Reed's storage warehouse on Pier 4, overlooking the East River. Making this their home, the Fantastic Four continued with their lives, eventually managing to move back into the Baxter Building.

It has emerged that Reed is one of the members of the "Illuminati", unknown to his wife. He is also in possession of the "Power" gem of the Infinity Gauntlet.

During the superhero Civil War, Reed Richards is one of the leading figures, along with Iron Man, on the side which is in favor of the Superhuman Registration Act. He speculates that this will lead to conflict with his wife, which came true. Soon after, Sue left Reed, along with Johnny, to join the Secret Avengers in hopes that it would drive Reed to end the conflict quickly.

At one point, Peter Parker demands to see the conditions inside the detention facility designed by Reed to hold unregistered superhumans. After being escorted to and from the prison by Iron Man, Parker returns with more doubts than ever about whether he is on the right side and asks Reed why he supports the Superhuman Registration Act, a question Reed answers by telling him a convoluted story about his paternal uncle, Ted. However, he later revealed that the real reason for supporting the registration act is due to his development of a working version of Isaac Asimov's fictional psychohistory concept. His application of this science indicates to him that billions will die in escalating conflicts without the presence of the act. In the final battle of the war, he is shot by Taskmaster, saving Sue Storm's life. With Reed on the brink of death, a furious Susan strikes Taskmaster with a telekinetic field. Reed survives, however, and Sue returns to him in the aftermath of the battle, having been granted amnesty. Seeking to repair the damage done to their marriage as a result of the war, Sue and Reed take time off from the Fantastic Four, but ask Storm and the Black Panther to take their places in the meantime.

He played key roles in World War Hulk, the Secret Invasion and Dark Reign. Tragedy strikes the team when Johnny is apparently killed in the Negative Zone. As the Fantastic Four recover from Johnny's apparent death, Mister Fantastic grows disillusioned at how scientists see science and its applications. Therefore, he creates a new team, the Future Foundation, to help create a better future for mankind. However, the team's initial tasks are complicated when they are forced to deal with the 'Council of Reeds', a group of alternate versions of Reed Richards who lack his morality or family that became trapped in the FF's reality after an accident with Reed's dimensional portal.

Characterization: Reed Richards' strength comes more from the powers of his mind than the powers of his body; indeed, he once told Spider-Man that he considers his stretching powers to be expendable compared to his intellect. He is generally considered as the most intelligent human in the world, rivaled only by Lex Luthor. A visionary theoretician and an inspired machine smith, he has made breakthroughs in such varied fields as space travel, time travel, extra-dimensional travel, biochemistry, robotics, computers, synthetic polymers, communications, mutations, transportation, holography, energy generation, spectral analysis and more.

However, he is never afraid to admit when others have greater expertise in certain fields than him, such as recognizing that Doctor Octopus possesses greater knowledge of radiation, that Hank Pym is a superior biochemist, or that Spider-Man can think of a problem from a biology perspective where he would be unable to do so, since his expertise is in physics. Richards has earned Ph.D.s in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering. His patents are so valuable that he is able to bankroll the Fantastic Four, Inc., without any undue financial stress. Mind control is rarely effective on him and when it does work, it wears off sooner than it would a normal person, due to what he describes as an "elastic consciousness"

Friends and Foes: He is closest to his wife Sue and children, Valeria and Franklin, as well as his best friend Ben Grimm and his brother-in-law, Johnny Storm. He is one of the most respected members of the superhero community and the go-to guy for scientific problems and inventions in the superhero world.

His greatest foe is Doctor Doom who bears a long and bitter grudge against him that grows with every defeat.

Relationships: Her Hubby Reed, her brother Johnny, Ben and especially her children, Valeria and Franklin.
Temper: She's generally very accepting, but mess with her kids and look the hell out…

                        Abilities 48 + Skills 22 (44 ranks) + Advantages 9 + Powers 94 + Defenses 16 = 189 / 189

Build Comments: The heart of the FF, The Invisible Woman, Susan Storm-Richards. She came out almost exactly like I wanted and at cost with no problems. She might be the most well-rounded and overall powerful of the group. Ben and Johnny both hit a little harder, and Ben has Power Attack, but her array of abilities combined with some decent skills make her the most dangerous of the team for sure.

Secret Origins: Susan Storm, and her younger brother, Jonathan grew up in the town of Glenville, Long Island, children of a physician named Franklin Storm and a woman named Mary. The parents left their kids alone one night to travel to a dinner honoring Dr. Storm. On the way, a tire blew out but only Mary was injured. Franklin escaped injury and insisted on operating on his wife. He was unable to save her and she died. After his wife's death, Dr. Storm became a gambler and a drunk, losing his medical practice, which led him to the accidental killing of a loan shark. Franklin did not defend himself in court, because he still felt guilty over Mary's death. With their father in prison, Susan had to become a mother figure for her younger brother.
While living with her aunt, Susan, at the young age of 17, met her future husband, Reed Richards, a house guest who was attending college. When she graduated from high school as the award-winning captain of her Girls' Varsity Swim Team, she moved to California to attend college, where she pursued an acting career and encountered Richards again. They began to become romantically involved with each other.

The Story so Far: See Mister Fantastic’s post for most of the FF’s adventures.

Characterization: Sue’s unparalleled sense of compassion and common sense makes her a natural-born leader, and she usually acts as the Fantastic Four's second-in-command, usually taking over complete leadership of the team during Mr. Fantastic's absence.

Friends and Foes: She loves her husband, Reed Richards and their children, Franklin and Valeria dearly. She has numerous friends in the superhero community and one of the most respected members in the community as a whole.

She has a complicated relationship with Namor, who has never made it a secret of his desire for her. As a member of the FF, she has garnered many enemies, including Doctor Doom, the Mole Man, the Frightful Four and countless others.

                              Abilities 50 + Skills 18 (36 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 93 + Defenses 15 = 188 / 188

Build Comments: The hothead, Johnny Storm. One of the shortest "deaths" in comic history a couple of years ago, but still a fun character.

Secret Origins: Johnny Storm is the son of physician Franklin Storm and his wife Mary. He and his older sister Susan grew up in Glenville, New York. While still young, his mother was in a terrible car accident and she passed away, despite Franklin’s attempts to repair her body. After this tragic event, Franklin fell into a downward spiral of drinking and gambling, eventually leading to his arrest for the murder of a loan shark, which he claimed was self-defense. Johnny and Sue were then sent to their Aunt’s to live and Sue spend much time caring for her younger brother.

The Story so Far: See Mister Fantastic.

Characterization: Forever young and rebellious, Johnny was always ecstatic to have his powers. Labeled the hot head of the group, Johnny often makes brash decisions and disobeys direct orders. He would quit the team early on (and many more times) because of his temper. Storm was trained in hand-to-hand combat by the Thing, and is highly skilled in the use of his superhuman powers in combat. He is also a skilled race-car driver, auto mechanic and designer.

Friends and Foes: He is close to the other members of the FF and his niece and nephew, Valeria and Franklin. He and Ben Grimm fight all the time, but are close as brothers and no one messes with the other when the other is around but them.

Johnny has been involved in several romantic relationships throughout the years, including, but not limited to, the Inhuman Crystal, member-in-training and future Galactus herald Frankie Raye, the Skrull agent Lyja disguised as Alicia Masters, and the Atlantean Namorita. He has also had countless relationships with civilian women.

                                Abilities 86 + Skills 25 (50 ranks) + Advantages 13 + Powers 37 + Defenses 14 = 175 / 175

Build Comments: Here he is, his Aunt Petunia’s favorite nephew, the idol o’ millions, the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing! Man, I always loved Ben Grimm the best out of all the FF. The way they wrote his wit, his constant struggles with his appearance and his flat-out butt kickin' style made him one of my idols as a kid, and I am still a total Thing fanboy to this day.

Secret Origins: Benjamin Jacob Grimm was born on Yancy Street in the heart of New York City into a poor Jewish family. When Ben was a young kid his older brother, Daniel Grimm, was the leader of the Yancy Street Gang, a group of young trouble-makers from the area. When he was old enough Ben joined this gang as well. He was inducted into the gang by being ‘beaten in.’ Growing up poor along with his gang affiliation and related activities made Ben street-smart, tough and 'hard' very early in life. All of these personality characteristics have served him well throughout his lifetime of brawling and adventuring.

During Ben's formative years tragedy struck his family hard; his older brother Daniel was killed in a gang fight when Ben was still a kid and his parents Daniel, Sr. and Elsie both died in an accident when he was a teenager. Ben was placed in the custody of his Uncle Jake (his father's brother) and Aunt Alyce (Jake's first wife) who took him from New York to Arizona. Unfortunately, Alyce died relatively young. After Alyce's death, Jake Grimm re-married. His second wife's name was Sophie, whom he also out-lived. Jake married yet a third time, this time to a much younger woman named Petunia, whom Ben speaks of quite often.

Now physically removed from his past troubles, Ben did well in high school, using his natural talent to his advantage becoming an excellent football player. Ben won an athletic scholarship to Empire State University where he met, roomed and became best friends with Reed Richards. While attending university Ben and Reed also meet Victor Von Doom who was studying there as well.

After college, Ben joined the US Air Force and became a fantastic pilot, often testing experimental aircraft and even flying top secret missions for the US government. His piloting skills eventually landed him a spot at NASA.

Ben was later contacted by his old friend Reed who wanted him to pilot his experimental rocket into space (as they joked about doing when they were in school together). Ben was reluctant to pilot the ship as he was unsure that it would be safe for them. Ben was persuaded to do so anyway and they took off with Susan Storm, who helped fund the project, and her younger brother Johnny on their fateful trip.

The Story so Far: See Mister Fantastic

Characterization, Friends and Foes: The Thing is generally well liked amongst other heroes within the superhero community. Grimm's relationship with his teammates has been a close but occasionally edgy one given his temper. Through the years Ben has had innumerable adventures with not only his teammates but many, many other heroes, super-beings and even aliens throughout the Thorpacoverse. In the course of these adventures and team-ups, Ben encountered and/or teamed up with old sparring partners like the Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Black Bolt, Power Man, Nick Fury and Silver Surfer while establishing new sparring partners such as Wonder Man, Sasquatch, Lobo, and Hyperion. He also teamed with many of the highest profile heroes including Captain America, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Invincible, Spawn, Jenny Sparks, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil and Dr. Strange. Ben faced and fought foes ranging from the most obscure all the way to universal threats like Thanos. The time spent with these many and varied members of the superhero community has built bonds of trust and friendship for Ben that have enhanced his reputation as one of the most honest and dependable superheroes anywhere, despite his monstrous appearance. A great many of these friendships have served him well and endure to this very day.

He and Johnny Storm are always arguing and have often clashed, causing no end of mayhem in the Fantastic Four headquarters.

Grimm calls Reed Richards "Stretch", as appropriate to the fact that he is naturally tall and can literally stretch his body. However, Grimm also holds Reed responsible for his condition since he had dismissed the potential danger of the cosmic rays that gave them their powers, although Grimm had taken them very seriously. At times of real frustration towards Reed, Grimm refers to him simply as "Richards".

Grimm is the godfather of Reed and Sue's son Franklin, who affectionately calls him "Uncle Ben". Ben also has a long-standing and continuing feud with some youngsters from his old neighborhood Yancy Street. Calling themselves the Yancy Street Gang, they play practical jokes on Ben because they think that Ben considers himself a 'big-shot' now and that he has forgotten where he's from; where his roots are. The gang figures that being from his old neighborhood and being members of his old gang gives them the right to harass Ben.
