  • 332 - TMNT Michelangelo

It's time to go back to the STREETS OF THE THORPOCAVERSE with these next run of GREEN LIGHT SPECIALS!

Michelangelo: Hey Donny, looks like this one is suffering from shell shock.
    Donatello: Too derivative.
Michelangelo: Well, I guess we can really shell it out.
    Donatello: Too cliché.
Michelangelo: Well, it was a shell of a good hit!

Secret: The Turtles try to remain out of the public eye and operate in secret and stealth

    Abilities 58 + Skills 31 (62 ranks) + Advantages 24 + Powers 7 + Defenses 14 = 134 / 134

Build Comments: I still haven't gotten to the new movie, so no changes based on that, just some minor tweaks before reposting on the new thread. This is probably my fifth update of the TMNT since the shift to 3E and I still find things to tweak, every single time. Mikey is built to be a team player and stick and move fighter, setting up foes for big shots from Raph and Leo.

Secret Origins: Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were members of The Foot ninja clan om feudal Japan. Saki, a high-ranking member, ordered that in addition to assassinating the lord they were hired to kill, they should wipe out anybody else they come across. Yoshi refused and Saki marked him for death. The Foot killed Yoshi's wife, Tang Shen, but Yoshi fled with his and Shen's four sons. Some years later, Saki and the Foot found Yoshi and his children, and slew them all.

The Story so Far: Their story did not end there. Saki, through mystic means, lived for hundreds of years more, ruling The Foot Clan with an iron fist. Eventually, though, he ended up being ousted by new high ranking members of the clan and put to death. His granddaughter, Karai, had him resurrected and with several loyal followers, including his lieutenant Tatsu, they came to America. After recruiting and training several more new members, Saki forged a suit of armor and changed his name to The Shredder and set about taking over the New York underworld.

But an old foe awaited him. Yoshi and his sons were reincarnated as a rat and four turtles in a research laboratory called Stockgen owned by Baxter Stockman, a scientist who had secretly allied himself with General Krang. April O’Neill, who worked at the lab, named the rat Splinter and the turtles after legendary artists, Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael. Members of the Foot Clan broke into the facility one night to steal some mutagen. The animals are taken by mistake and after dropped into a sewer with the mutagen. They, and an alley cat that tried to make off with Raphael, are covered with it and transformed into enlightened, humanoid beings.

Yoshi, now called Splinter, remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

Characterization: Michelangelo was initially depicted as fun-loving, carefree, and, while not as aggressive as Raphael, always ready to fight. Mikey is the youngest and least mature of his brothers. Enthusiastic, positive and adaptable, Mikey is extremely creative and goes with the flow. He loves pop culture and yearns to be a part of the real world. He loves pizza and skateboarding and generally functions as the comic relief of the team.

Friends and Foes: Mikey is closest to Raph, although he spends a lot of time with Donatello. He greatly respects Leo’s leadership, but loves cracking jokes just to try and get him to lighten up a bit. He, like the other brothers, have no love lost for Shredder and The Foot.

Since their move to Chicago, he has become friendly with Nightwing and Harry Dresden. He has a “man-crush” on Savage Dragon, as Raph likes to say, but seems to be intimidated by him. He occasionally hangs out with Malcolm, Dragon’s son, as they both like video games.

Enemy: The Shredder, Karai, The Foot.
Relationships: His brothers, Casey Jones, April O'Neil and Master Splinter.
Responsibility: Donatello is the glue of the family and the unofficial second in command. His instinct is to watch everyone’s back and keep the peace.
Secret: The Turtles try to remain out of the public eye and operate in secret and stealth.

      Abilities 66 + Skills 30 (60 ranks) + Advantages 17 + Powers 7 + Defenses 15 = 135 / 135

Build Comments: The brains of the TMNT, Donatello. I really like his role on the team in the new Nick series, so I leaned more towards that than regular canon.

Secret Origins: Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were members of The Foot ninja clan om feudal Japan. Saki, a high-ranking member, ordered that in addition to assassinating the lord they were hired to kill, they should wipe out anybody else they come across. Yoshi, now called Splinter, remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

Characterization: "Donnie" is extremely intelligent and technical, always working on a strategy whether building machines or battling villains; the complete opposite to the free-flowing Mikey. He talks a lot in order to describe or explain a situation or theory in full, even when in the face of danger. He is also more short-tempered, getting frustrated easily and shouting when angry, although Donatello is usually kind, caring, and compassionate.

Friends and Foes: Donnie is closest among the Turtles to Leo, even though he sometimes struggles with being the smartest, but not the leader. He likes to hang with Mikey and play computer games and he and Raph get along, but Raph likes to tease him about his brainy-ness, which irks him at times.

He has grown fond of Nightwing since they moved to Chicago since Grayson’s technical skill allows him to converse with Donnie on topics he enjoys. He and Harry Dresden don’t get along well, although it’s not confrontational, simply because of the wizards-technology-boom thing. He is close to April because of her chemical knowledge as well.

Relationships: His brothers, Casey Jones, April O'Neil and Master Splinter.
Responsibility: He is the leader of the TMNT and this responsibility weighs heavy on him at times.
Secret: The Turtles try to remain out of the public eye and operate in secret and stealth.

        Abilities 66 + Skills 39 (78 ranks) + Advantages 22 + Powers 7 + Defenses 13 = 147 / 147

Build Comments: The leader of the brothers, Leonardo. He came out way over pointed for a PL8, but I don't care, he's the most skilled turtle and I wanted him to be more than able to handle any of his brothers, even Raph. Despite what happened in the CGI movie, he should beat Raph more often than not but in general, I see all of them very close in skill.

Characterization: Leonardo is the most serious and focused of the team. Being the designated leader of the group, Leonardo is very enthusiastic about his role. For the most part, he tries to be the mature and responsible sibling, but there are times where he can be as childish as his brothers, such as teasing Donnie for losing to a mutant monkey or trying to be too much like Splinter, although Leonardo often tries to comfort his brothers when they are scared or upset, mostly Mikey.

He comes up with most of the plans and strategies while he and his brothers are fighting bad-guys or training in their Lair.

Leonardo is shown to be quite selfless when it counts.

Friends and Foes: Leo is closest to Donatello among his brothers and most often at odds with Raphael, due to their contrasting natures. He has something of a crush on Karai, developed during their time of truce with The Foot, but loves his brothers more.

Since moving to Chicago, he has become good friends with Nightwing, going to him for advice on leadership and crime-fighting on many occasions. He has also become close Karyn Murphy and Savage Dragon’s daughter, Angel, who seems to be attracted to him.

Secret: The Turtles try to remain out of the public eye and operate in secret and stealth.
Temper: Raph has a VERY quick temper which can cause him, and his brothers, lots of issues.

          Abilities 54 + Skills 30 (60 ranks) + Advantages 21 + Powers 7 + Defenses 16 = 128 / 128

Build Comments: The team badass, Raphael. As Leo and Superman discuss in the hysterical parody, the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (check it out at dailymotion.com, a great waste of 45 minutes), every team needs "that guy", like Wolverine, or Batman (depending on the writer of JLA) at the time. You know, the loner, the guy that never follows the rules but all the fans love, but the team leaders hate. That's Raph. Of all the turtles, I figure he's the one that will need that will need clean up the soonest.

Characterization: Raphael ("Raph") is consistently portrayed as the the most aggressive of the turtles. Despite his hot-tempered personality, he is simultaneously kind-hearted and has a soft spot for those in need. Raph is the most impatient, aggressive and rash turtle among his brothers, enjoying and delving head-first into combat, confident in his skills. He is looked up to for strength, comradery, and reliability.

Being the rebellious member of the team, Raph frequently goes off on his own to do things his own way, often getting himself into sticky situations. It was this common rebellious streak than caused Raph and vigilante Casey Jones to hit off their friendship, fighting crime behind the backs of authority - authority above and below the manhole.

While Raph is the most likely to charge first, ignore reason, use force and question higher-ups, he is a considerate, honest, loyal, empathetic fighter who uses his great abilities for good.

Friends and Foes: He often butts heads with his older brother, Leonardo, and picks on his younger brothers, Michelangelo and Donatello, being jealous of Leonardo's role as the leader, easily annoyed by Michelangelo's immaturity, and finding Donatello's intelligence "nerdy". Nonetheless, he cares deeply about his three brothers, and is particularly protective about them.

Since moving to Chicago, he has formed a bond with Harry Dresden, since both are impulsive and love to trade barbs. He and Nightwing get along fine, but his reckless behavior sometimes rubs Grayson the wrong way. He and Savage Dragon have a good relationship as well, with him seeing Dragon as a role model for the way he keeps his temper and power in control, except in extreme circumstances.

He has developed a strong rivalry with Alopex, her controlled, precise manner being a contrast to his more emotional and reckless approach.

          • Re: J-Mart: Brutale, Stallion, Pink Pearl, Rampage, The TMNT

The best line in the first Turtles movie:

(Casey is visibly nervous about being underground in the Turtles' lair)
            Donatello: "Hahah... you're claustrophobic."
Casey Jones: "... You want a punch in the mouth?! I never even LOOKED at another guy before!"

Leo being the best is a good choice- I think he & Raph are top-tier, while Donnie & Mikey are lesser. I typically stick them at the same PL for balance, but Leo is REALLY the most skilled and Raph is REALLY the most dangerous. It's kinda tough to equate the whole "Raph is the heavy-hitter; Leo is the finesse guy" approach considering their respective weapons, though- Raph's tiny sai make him not only the worst character in many of the video games, but don't really let him to upper-tier Martial Artist Damage compared to a pair of Katana.

Destiny's Pawn: Splinter is attuned to the flow of the universe and is driven by a destiny that sometimes even he doesn't understand.
              Enemy: The Shredder.
Prejudice: Being an anthropomorphic rat oftentimes causes people to be wary (at best) of him at first and he often has to work to gain people's trust.
Relationships: With his sons, the TMNT. He also has become close to April O'Neil and Casey Jones.

              Abilities 74 + Skills 32 (64 ranks) + Advantages 48 + Powers 0 + Defenses 21 = 175 / 175

Build Comments: Can’t believe it took me so long to get to Splinter. I should have built him with the Turtles, but he just kinda slipped my mind until recently when I was working on the G.I. Joe ninjas again.

And I admit I probably went overboard with his advantages but I wanted him to be able to beat Shredder with some luck and definitely be able to school his sons whenever he wanted to without making him PL11. And I think with this build he can do it.

Secret Origins: Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were members of The Foot ninja clan in feudal Japan.

Characterization: Splinter is many things to the turtles – Wise sensei, protective parent, loving father, stern disciplinarian, quirky master and Zen philosopher. A ninja master at the height of his abilities, he’s determined to train and protect his new family at all costs. His years of ninja training means he’s not only a fearsome fighter, but also remarkably in tune with the universe.

Splinter can be very strict when it comes to training and letting his sons up to the surface. Sometimes he uses harsh methods in order for them to learn a lesson, but nonetheless, Splinter is a loving father who only wants what's best for his sons, and will do anything he can to protect them from harm’s way.

Friends and Foes: He dearly loves his turtle sons and has become a father figure to Casey and April as well. His mortal enemy is the Shredder and he is driven bring his former ally to justice.

              • Re: J-Mart: Brutale, Stallion, Pink Pearl, Rampage, The TMNT

I love the TMNT builds. I never really kept up with the turtles all too regularly, but for whatever reason, they had a special place in my heart. Hard to explain... nice work on them.

The latest cartoon tv show had a fun Splinter line too: "The first rule of being a ninja is do no harm. Unless you need to do harm, then do lots of harm!"

Fun fact: The Thorpacaverse builds for Batman and Splint show that while Batman is tougher than splinter (physically and with the fact that Batman wears body-armor), Splinter's active defenses are higher than Batman's. So, in some regards, while Batman has the higher accuracy and strength, Splinter is quicker than Batman. It would be interesting to see the two fight, the differences in their martial arts style alone...

Thanks, Goldar. I refuse to discriminate against any jobber, male or female!

And Kenma, I could see Batman and Splinter sparring for sure. The Rat Daddy would be dodging Batman's haymakers, talking about how he senses his lost inner child and needs to find peace, etc. Then them teaming up to lay the smack down on Oroku Saki and his crew.

                        Abilities 52 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 14 + Powers 0 + Defenses 11 = 96 / 96

Build Comments: Another bastion of the Iron Age, Casey Jones, the TMNT's bud and mook basher extraordinaire. If I test the turtles, you know he's in for sure. The complications and most of the build are based on his incarnation in the new IDW series where he is a lot younger than classic Casey and he and April just started dating. He's still a great goon sweeper but way outclassed by his father The Hun and other biggies in the TMNT-verse.

Secret Origins: Casey Jones is a young college scholarship holder and a son of a single dad. Upon his mother's death by cancer, his father became an alcoholic thug who would vent his daily frustration on his son. On one such occasion, Casey was saved from another violent beating by Raphael, who had at that time lived a solitary life as a street vagrant following his mutation (unaware that he had a family searching for him), and the two quickly became fast friends and fellow vigilantes until Raphael was reunited with his family, at which point Casey was introduced to and befriended the other three turtles as well.

Characterization: Casey is a very formidable and dangerous combatant despite his relative newness to being a vigilante. He is acrobatic and very agile and he has shown great proficiency in the use of various battering sport implements, such as baseball bats, golf clubs, and cricket bats, of which he carries a fair selection in a spacey golf quiver.

Friends and Foes: He has become very close to the TMNT, especially Raphael and seems to be attracted to April. He also has become an enemy of The Foot Clan and also has a rivalry with the Purple Dragons.

Build Comments: If you have the Turtles, you gotta have April. She’s gone through several iterations over the years and I’ve liked them all OK for the most part. I’m glad they’ve gotten her out of the “damsel in distress” mode and made her able to hold her own, at least a little bit, in combat. My April is a combo of the one from the new comic series and the last CGI movie.

Secret Origins: April O’Neil is an nineteen year old college student and lab intern. She is the one who named the Turtles out of inspiration of her History of Renaissance Art 101 class. She was later attacked by a Foot Ninja in the Stockman Research Lab but is aided by non-mutated Splinter to make her escape.

The Story so Far: Deeply troubled by the experience, a few months later she begins taking self-defense classes with Casey Jones. Her associated with Casey leads her to be reunited with the Turtles who are now mutated teenagers skilled in the art of ninjutsu. She helps them break into Stockman Research Labs to rescue Splinter.

After learning of Stockgen’s illicit actions she becomes a double agent by making use of her access to aid the Turtles. She has assisted them on many adventures and remains one of their closest allies.

Characterization: April is a highly intelligent and strong willed young woman. Over time, she has taken up martial arts training from Splinter and becoming skilled in the use of katana.

Friends and Foes: She is a good friend to Splinter and the Turtles. She also seems to have an attraction to Casey Jones, and the feeling is mutual but neither has acted on it yet.

                            COMPLICATIONS:
                            Enemy: Splinter, the TMNT.
Motivation: He is determined to be the most powerful Ninja lord in the world.
                            Obsession: Destroying Splinter the Turtles.

                            Abilities 78 + Skills 38 (76 ranks) + Advantages 33 + Powers 11 + Defenses 18 = 178 / 178

Build Comments: The Shredder has been the TMNT's nemesis since day one, and whenever they "kill" him or he takes a sabbatical, the books/show are just not the same until he comes back.

I really built him to be my current Batman's equal and a good match for all the Turtles at once, although he would still be at huge disadvantage in the MnM system because numbers are a huge disadvantage for a solo hero/villain unless they have area effects or multiattack. If I did a fight with him against the TMNT, I'd probably add a Multiattack strike just to give him more of a chance to take them out.

Secret Origins: Oroku Saki was a high-ranking member of the Foot Clan in feudal Japan. He orders that in addition to assassinating the lord they were hired to kill, they should wipe out anybody else they come across. Hamato Yoshi, another Foot Clan member, refused, and Saki marks him for death. The Foot killed Yoshi's wife, Tang Shen, but Yoshi fled with his and Shen's four sons. Some years later, Saki and the Foot found Yoshi and his children, and slew them all.

The Story so Far: Saki, through mystic means, lived for hundreds of years more, ruling The Foot Clan with an iron fist.

Members of the Foot Clan broke into the facility to steal some mutagen. The animals are taken by mistake and after dropped into a sewer with the mutagen they are covered with it and transformed into enlightened, humanoid beings.

Yoshi, now called Splinter remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

After losing much of his power in New York due to a gang war with The Kingpin, he relocated to Boston. The Turtles and Splinter have followed him there to continue their battle.

Characterization: Ambitious, charismatic and single-minded, The Shredder is a force to be reckoned with.

Friends and Foes: He is solely focused on his goals of killing Splinter and the Turtles and ruling Chicago (originally New York) so he doesn’t have many close associates. He does have some relationship with Karai and Tatsu, but he makes it clear they are his subordinates, not his peers.

Even though I posted them a lot earlier on their own, here's some Foot for him to throw at the Turtles if you need quick access to them.

Since they're sharing a universe here, I suggest some sweet backstory feuding between the Foot Clan... and the HAND.

                                Or...

                                ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ra's Al Ghul sat in his lair, sipping a glass of wine and staring at the scrolls that held his plan. His favored daughter, Talia Al Ghul approached.

"The word has been sent, father," she said, as she sat on his desk. "Saki and Fisk have refused your offer. As expected..."

Ra's smiled. "Then we are ready to begin, my daughter. They will find my next offer far less palatable. Contact our ally. Let them know that like our bodies, The Hand and The Foot will be under control of The Head. And remember, that for every Head that is cut off..."

"...Two more will grow in its place...Herr Al Ghul..." Baron Von Strucker added as he entered the room. "We await your orders, Supreme HYDRA..."
                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or something like that. I'm still sorting it out, but I don't see why Ra's couldn't have been heavily involved with all those organizations at one time in his millenia of life, with a few tweaks to their origins.
