    This is for rules writeups for my Forever Tree multiverse! All writeups use Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition, NOT 3rd Edition!

    Character backgrounds are covered in my Forever Tree multiverse and Earth-G universe threads in the Settings subforum. This thread is for crunch, only. Eventually I'll post thematically appropriate pics for each character.

    As each NPC is fleshed out more in-game, I'll slowly post them here. This thread will only fill up slowly, as a result!

    Atheist
    Though he hides it well, Simon has seen too much of the Forever Tree, and could no longer sustain his medieval Christian worldview. Being an atheist in medieval Europe is dangerous, however, necessitating keeping it very quiet.
    Has Immense Secret Knowledge of the Multiverse
    This may not seem bad, but Earth-G is a place where too much knowledge disagreeing with religious authorities gets you burned at the stake.
    Technologically Inept
    Again, this may not seem like all that big a deal in medieval Europe, but, as a Sungod, Simon Luther could theoretically call upon massive hi-tech resources. He chooses not to do so, mainly because he, as a medieval person, is hopelessly inept with such things. Thus, Simon is considerably weaker than he should be...!

    Simon Luthor is from Earth-G. Simon Luthor is a member of the Sungods, a multiverse-wide superhero team working directly for the Solar Lion, a higher-order intelligence from Perpendicular-6.

    Simon's chief goal is to obtain peaceful cohabitation between mundane humanity and those metamorphosed by the Green Star.

    Yes, Simon's eyesight is good to read the fine print on a newspaper 11 billion lightyears away. It's his main power, after all.

    His hearing cannot penetrate the void of outer space---obviously!---but he can hear anywhere on Earth!

        Background: Maryanne Reedy was born at Plymouth, England, about 1520. Her mother's husband was a sea-faring man who left on a long voyage and was never heard from again. He'd left his wife pregnant and she gave birth to a sickly male child who died soon after the illegitimate birth of his half-sister, Maryanne. The mother waited years for her husband to return and when her money ran out, she took Maryanne to London to appeal to her mother-in-law for financial help. She knew this old woman disliked girls, so she dressed Maryanne in boy's clothes and made her pretend to be her son. The mother-in-law was fooled and promised a crown a week to help support them. Maryanne continued to masquerade as a boy for many years, even after the old woman died and the financial aid ended.

        Then a teenager, Maryanne was hired out as a footboy to a French woman. But she did not live there long, for growing bold and strong, and having also a roving mind, she entered herself on board a man-of-war, where she served some time; then quit it. Still disguised as a male, she enlisted in a foot regiment in Flanders and later a horse regiment, serving in both with distinction. She fell in love with a fellow soldier, disclosed her true sex, and began dressing as a female. After their marriage, she and her husband became innkeepers, owning the Three Horseshoes near the castle of Breda in Holland. Unfortunately, he died young and her fortunes soon dwindled.

        She knew that life in the 1500s was much easier as a man than as a woman, so she reverted back to men's clothing and started her life over, this time going to sea on a Dutch merchant ship heading to the Caribbean. On one voyage, the ship was commandeered by English pirates with whom she sailed and fought until they accepted the King's pardon in 1553 and began operating as privateers. Maryanne was known for her violent temper, ferocious fighting, and reputation as a "fierce hell cat."

        Complications
        It's a Man's World - Maryanne commonly portrays herself as Mark Ready, Captain of the Calico Jack. None of her current crew know her as anything else.

        Pirate Scum - Mark was a known pirate, prior to taking a pardon and starting as a privateer. This makes her unsavory to both those who have issues with pirates and with pirates who see her as a sell out. The Calico Jack was then called the Vanity, but is easily recognizable as the same ship.

        Fierce "Hell Cat" - Even before the green star loosed her animalistic nature Maryanne was known for her foul temper and combative nature. Since then, her rages have become truly a horror to behold since she can easily tear a man in half with her bare hands or (more likely) teeth.

        Carnivore - While Maryanne can consume small amounts of plant matter, it is not pleasant. Her digestive system has changed so that she can only gain sustenance from meat, which she prefers raw.

                  His last name gone when he entered the church, William never the less had a family. At a young age, he felt compelled to leave his home and join the church which was a decision his family supported despite how difficult it was for them. In a way, it was also because William knew his parents could not support a child and themselves, so he sacrificed his parents love out of love for them. Until the age of 12, he did odd jobs at the local monastery, assisted the monks, and did as was needed. They grew quite fond of him and when he asked to join the Franciscan order there was no barriers put in his way. Meanwhile, his parents had another child soon after William left and better harvests not soon after allowing for the family to survive. William also made sure to assist as he could.

                  Growing up in the monastery had a profound impact on William. The church was his mother and father. All of the monks and friars who stayed in the monastery sometimes were examples of all the kindness the church was capable of. Living behind the walls and in the surrounding area, he never saw how corrupt some in the church could be. They taught him theology, kindness, and the ways of the order. By the time he was 18, he took his vows, but staying behind the walls didn't feel like something he was supposed to be doing. Something inside urged him to take the word to the people and show them the love that they deserved. Despite a few culture shocks at the outside world and for the first time seeing how corrupted some in the church had become, he still had faith it was only pockets that would be reformed by the Pope in due time. Given his profession and vows, he was never in need of food or clothing. Kindness attracts kindness and he was never greedy. Only enough to live.

                  Life on the road was something William had gotten used to when the green star came. Some saw it as the devils work, others just an omen, and still others a sign from heaven. William was in the last group. The powers of flame given to him were something he viewed as a gift from God to help cleanse the earth of the wicked and protect those who needed protecting. Living such a simple life, he did not see the atrocities being carried out against other Starborn or those accused. Of course, he saw witches being burned who the church had accused of heresy, but in his heart he still believed the higher ups to be good and pure. This illusion came crashing down when he made his way back to his childhood home.

                  The towns people were in an uproar casting stones and marching on his now brothers home. Leading the way was a cardinal he had run across before carrying a large cross. His brother wasn't a witch or evil, so something made him dig deeper. His attire, demeanor, and recognition from the cardinal allowed him to get through the crowds and give the witch inside a chance to surrender him or herself. The cardinal was especially for this idea as it didn't involve him getting his hands dirty. Inside, William found his brother, three nephews, and sister in law huddled in a corner. At first they were afraid until William explained who he was. Gregory was in pure shock as he heard his brother joined the church before he was born, but it was not the time for a warm family reunion. Quickly, Gregory explained that Elizabeth, his wife, had used her new found plant controlling powers to breathe life into the towns dying crops so they wouldn't starve. A local lord took offense to it, summoned a cardinal, and began the investigations. William offered to try and intercede on his brothers behalf, but Gregory would have none of it. To him, William was part of the church that was persecuting them and didn't want to jeopardize his brother as well. No amount of talking could convince Gregory and the towns folk were almost upon them.

                  As his brothers family were all tied to the stakes for burning, William had to hold back. He had made a vow not to put himself in danger for his brother. When given the chance to renounce Elizabeth, the children and Gregory refused. Without even flinching, the cardinal ordered them all burned. It was on this day that William had a new mission. He would help make it so that one day others would not need to suffer his brothers family fate and help restore the church to one of love and kindness. On his travels, he assisted others in setting up a network to smuggle the weak to safer places while keeping his appearance concealed and his voice distorted. In addition, he took to dressing as rogue in a mask to help those being assaulted that could not protect themselves. Bands of mercenaries had a hard time with how adept he was with using his God given fire. Those he saved viewed him as an angel and those he stopped a devil. Who would view a Franciscan friar of all things of being the fiend known as the fire devil?

                        Background:
                        "Jonathan Francis" growing up was more of a street rat. He got by, by being unseen. When the green light filled the sky things changed. He found this out accidently while trying to pick someone’s money pouch. He touched them and all hell broke loose. His body was wracked with pain as he started changing becoming a perfect copy of the person who he touched. If that was the only part of it, he might have been amused, however in doing so his mind was filled with another conscious. He became a passenger in his own head, unable to do anything or regain control. He “became” his target in both mind and body. He knew from that day he was cursed by God for his ways. It took a while until his body and his mind reverted back to his original state of being.

                        Feeling such remorse, and never wanting to go through that again, he hung himself. After the constable found him, removed him, and turned him over to the morgue and buried, he awoke buried alive. He knew he killed himself, but for the life of him he couldn’t tell you what he saw or didn’t see while he was dead. All he knew was a week had gone by.

                        He fled into the Scottish Highlands and found out, no matter where he went he could perfectly understand anything that was said to him. So he knew that he was cursed to never die, to always suffer if he touched another being, to be possessed by that being, and to always understand whatever was spoken to him. He took to wearing clothing that fully covered every inch of his being. He kept moving from location to location hoping to find some way to end his curse which led him back to merry ole England. He heard of an angel that was helping those who have been blessed or cursed by God and made his way there. He is currently a newly arrived Scottsman to the city and recently heard the cries and incidents of the events of the past few days.

                        Jonathan is 5'8 and 155 lbs. He has Red hair and emerald green eyes. He has a haunted look about him, and always is covered in clothing with very little skin showing.

                          "Jonathan Francis" growing up was more of a street rat. He got by, by being unseen. When the green light filled the sky things changed. He found this out accidently while trying to pick someone’s money pouch. He touched them and all hell broke loose. His body was wracked with pain as he started changing becoming a perfect copy of the person who he touched. If that was the only part of it, he might have been amused, however in doing so his mind was filled with another conscious.                             The Skydoor is originally from the Rootthrone. He has a 'son' named Khaos (who works with the Epimetheans [a band of dimensional art-thieves]) and a 'daughter' named Stasis (who works with the Red Sons [an anti-hero team devoted to upkeeping the multiverse no matter the cost]). As both Khaos and Stasis were conceived asexually and're also living tears in space/time, the Skydoor feels zero parental concern for his accidentally-spawned children.

                            The Skydoor is a living Deus ex Machina, existing to facilitate multiverse-wide explorations. He's not native to any specific reality, and is, in fact, a special creation of the Worldfather. He is also not affiliated with any multiversal faction, having worked for just about everybody down his long epochs of life.

                            What is the Skydoor's goal? Why, that's up to the individual GM to decide. In my Forever Tree capaigns, he's secretly looking for a specific cosmic entity, but...YMMV.

                              History
                              Erzsabet was of low birth. Her early life was spent in toil. Though they found out the girl was anything but a weakling. She could lift heavy things for more than enough time. Some saw this as a blessing. At least her father did. He was a blacksmith and trained his daughter in the ways of the smith. Though she didn't quite catch on, she was more than helpful around the shop. Being an only child and a female, her mother found her working on male jobs disturbing. Where would their blood line go? Erzsebet was made to sit in boring lectures about how to be a proper woman. But she really didn't care. She noticed the how the guys looked at her when she worked. She wasn't going to be hurting for a suitor.

                              But that was not to be. The Green Star took any chance of having any life. The Star 'blessed' her with the power of evil! In a flash of dark light, she spread wings and an evil aura. Those that didn't run from her tried to kill her! She flew away from home. Far far away. Ever since then she's heard voices in her head. They tell her she is Satan's child. That she is to bring death and destruction. She has learned to tune them out.

                              She also learned to expand her repertoire of demonic tricks. At first she only had the ability to summon an evil sword (the voices called it Deathbringer) and to spit poison. Over the last two years she's learned many things, like how to hide her horns and wings. How to see in the dark. How to understand and speak to other no matter what language they speak. Though what really scares her is the powers that she just finds out with out trying, the Unholy Powers.

                              Distraction: The voices in her head are there and some time make it hard to think
                              Enemy: The church. It considers her one of the vilest kind of creature.
                              Holy Ground: Not that she's tried it herself, but she's pretty sure she'll weaken and die if brought there. The sight of holy symbols and sound of church bells already spook her.
