your bog-standard c-list dark wizard, Necrodamus had lived for centuries through human sacrifice, but grew weak in his old age, so he sought to steal strong souls to restore his youth or otherwise give himself a new, eternal body, which eventually ended with his death. But there was a Ghost Rider relaunch, and the spirit of vengeance had a shallow rogues gallery, so Necrodamus found yet another way to cheat death before scurrying into obscurity upon his defeat

one of the earlkiest characters in marvel's silver age, Patsy Walker was the titular star of their attempt to cash in on the teen romance/comedy genre popularized by Archie, and Patsy was brought into the Marvel Universe proper initially as just an easter egg reference to those short-lived titles. however, Writer Steve Englehart seized on that cameo to bring her into the mainstream again as Hellcat, hoping to match the recent launch of Ms. marvel with another feminist heroine. An Avenger for a few issues, Hellcat would soon find home in the Defenders, where she'd wind up married to Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan. but, with a name like that, the 90's inevitably called, with Daimon turned into the villain protagonist of his own book, where Patsy was driven to madness and suicide, only to be brought back to life in a pair of annuals again written by Englehart, and a perpetual spot on Marvel's C-list, often appearing as a friend of more established heroines or short runs of her own title

Spider-Man's greatest nemesis and archest of enemies, Norman Osborn was a seemingly randian genius, building a corporate empire upon his chemical research, while in fact poaching the work of geniuses in his employ. that is, until a lab accident while recreating a strength boosting formula blows up in his face, working as intended, but also inducing madness. taking some weapon prototypes and a costume, Norman became the Green Goblin, with the initial goal of become king of the New York criminal underworld, but after his initial attempts are foiled by Spider-man, became singularly obsessed with destroying the wondrous wall-crawler. over time, the goblin's madness became more pronounced, developing a split personality where his 'norman' side was wholly oblivious to his crimes and identity as the Goblin. eventually learning Spider-Man's secret identity as Peter Parker, the goblin finally exploited this knowledge in the worst possible way, kidnapping Spider-man's girlfriend Gwen Stacy and causing her death atop the Brooklyn Bridge. Nearly berserk in rage and grief, Spider-man came within an inch of beating the Goblin to death with his bare hands, only to spare the villain so that justice could be done. BNut, sensing weakness, the Goblin tried to kill Spider-man by ramming him with the remote-controlled wreckage of the goblin's glider, only for Spider-man to dodge at the last second, leaving the goblin to take the deathblow. and so the proud man perished, not upon a cross of gold but a stake of rusting tin.

and for decades, the raw narrative power of that story kept the Green Goblin dead, up until the 90's, when in the midst of backpedalling with all possible speed from the debacle of the Clone Saga, the spider-office had Norman secretly resurrected after his death so that he could be the master villain behind the story's collapsing house of cards. a decision equally reviled as the problem it was meant to fix, but the Goblin has since stuck around, serving capably as Spider-Man's great enemy, to be brought out to cap off the runs of major writers

an alien dragon-man, the Star-Stalker roamed from planet to planet, draining its energy to sustain himself and grow stronger like some cosmic vampire, until he was defeated by the Kree Preists of Pama and turned to stone, and to make sure he didn't escape, the Preists took him with them when they were forced to flee to earth. When Star-stalker broke free centuries later however, while at first a seemingly insurmountable threat to even the mighty Avengers, once they deciphered Star-Stalker's singular vulnerability to heat, he was defeated by Vision's solar energy beam, returning him to a prison of stone. but, so starved for energy in his imprisonment, Star-stalker crumbled to dust mere moments later

Many modern marvel fans will be surprised to know that Drax's origins are a far cry from today's MCU meme-lord. Originally, he was family man earthling Arthur Douglas, an accountant or jazz musician who was driving along with his family when they witnessed Thanos' first arrival on Earth, and the Mad Titan fired a blast at the car than let anyone know of his arrival. Arthur was killed, but was resurrected by the cosmic being Kronos, master of time itself, his body and mind remade into that of Drax The Destroyer, tasked with the singular purpose of killing Thanos. Unfortunately, Drax wasn't powerful enough for the job, and often wound up fighting Thanos' other enemies for one reason or another, ranging from duplicity to Drax's obsession refusing to let anyone fulfill his purpose. in a final irony, Drax missed out on the two seeming final defeats of Thanos entirely, depriving him of his purpose, but for a time, Drax found some solace upon learning his daughter Heather was now the heroine Moondragon. Unfortunately, Moondragon's own obsession with her own destiny and order led to her dominating a planet, and before she was stopped by the Defenders, she slew Drax by erasing his mind.

Years later, when Death brought Thanos back to life, Kronos responded by likewise resurrecting Drax, this time giving him the raw physical power to theoretically perform his task, and a limited cosmic awareness to always find and pursue his quarry. more years later, and Drax was killed a third time, but came back to life in the form we recognize him today

an alien colonizer, Nebulon was given his attractive humanoid form as a disguise to seek out suitable worlds from which to harvest water to support his homeworld. Naturally, he chose Earth, tricking the Squadron Sinister into selling away Earth so he could xenoform it by melting the polar ice caps, only to be foiled by the Defenders, and banishged to another dimension of existential philosophers. approving of their wisdom, Nebulon returned to earth, secretly starting a self-help cult to secretly guide earth towards peace under his rule, only to have his plans foiled both by the Defenders, and the villain group known as the Headmen, who were going through a similarly convuluted scheme of world domination. It was at this point that word of Nebulon's exploits reached his homeworld, revealing he'd broken their laws by interfering with earth's development, and he was stripped of most of his power, and expected to commit ritual suicide. nebulon balked at this and fled back to earth, where he hatched a scheme to steal the power of the Avengers to restore himself, only to be foiled by his wife Supernalia, whom upon realizing she too was interfering with Earth, took her own life, with Nebulon dying as well when he tried to stop her.

throughout the marvel universe, there is no force more feared than Mighty Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, whose arrival is preceded by his Heralds, who seek out those worlds to momentarily sate their master's hunger. After two of Galactus' Heralds found their conscience and turned against him, Galactus decided that his next herald would be an amoral barbarian. enter Tyros, tyrant king of some backwater world with the power over earth and stone, yet ever hungry for more. When Galactus chose Tyros and remade him as Terrax, the new herald wept in joy for there were now endless worlds to conquer. And for a time, this was enough, as Terrax used his position to raze worlds singlehanded before calling his master to finish the job. But in time, Terrax grew greedy and tried to overthrow his master, first by feeding him a world ruined by toxic poisons, and then by trying to force the Fantastic Four to slay Galactus for him. Uncovering Terrax's deception, and even deathly weakened, Galactus struck him down and cast him from his world-ship as if swatting a fly, stripping Tyros of his cosmic power at the same time. little more than a wild beast consumed by his hatred, Tyros accepted an offer of both power and revenge from the human villain Doctor Doom to regain some semblance of cosmic might to slay both the Fantastic Four and Tyros' own predecessor, the Silver Surfer. but in the end, Tyros was seemingly consumed by his own power, his mortal body unable to witshstand the rigours of godhood.

years later, the Genetech company's founder, Harmon Furmintz, tried to use Terrax's remains to give himself superpowers, but instead gave Terrax new life by reigniting the embers of the Power Cosmic, as Terrax himself used Furmintz's body to recreate his own. While Earth's heroes were able to drive Terrax off-world, Terrax quickly came to realize he was finally free to conquer the universe as he'd always dreamed.

one of the most storied Marvel heroes, the Life of Captain Mar-Vell is one of near constant retcons and retoolings. Originally, Marvel was a Kree soldier, sent to earth to secretly spy upon the US space program and determine if Earth was fit for conquest or a potential enemy to be destroyed, but forced to take action as a superhero due to the number of supervillains and other alien schemes, while at the same time marked for death by his own superior, Colonel Yon-Rogg, so he could lust after Mar-Vell's lover Una unopposed. In time, Mar-Vell came to Earth's side, turning against his own people in a battle that claimed both the lives of Yon-Rogg and Una. posing as a succession of cosmic beings, members of the Kree government empowered Mar-Vell as an unwitting super-agent until he discovered the truth and turned upon them, but in the process was molecularly bound to earth teenager Rick Jones, the duo forced to swap places between the Earth and the other-dimensional Negative Zone whenever they clashed their respective nega-bands together.

Eventually, Mar-Vell found a way to separate himself from Rick, to give the young man his life back, just in time for the cosmic being Eon to further empower Mar-Vell as Protector of the Universe, with his first task being to stop the omnicadal schemes of the Mad Titan Thanos. More adventures awaited Mar-Vell, but ultimately, his end came not in some brave heroic saga, but from cancer, caused by a chemical exposure during one of his earlier adventures, unnoticed for so long because of his Nega-Bands which kept it in remission for as long as possible until they became the only thing keeping it from killing Mar-Vell outright, while at the same time preventing any means to remove or treat the disease. And so, Mar-Vell passed away in his bed, surrounded by his freinds and those heroes of Earth he'd come to know as brothers in arms.

Mar-Vell also has the singular distinction of being the ONLY major marvel superhero to actually STAY dead, barring extremely temporary reprieves due to time travel, and even in the most egregious case following the Civil War crossover, the supposedly time-traveling Captain was revealed to be a Skrull impostor conditioned to genuinely believe he was Mar-Vell, and also gave his life to protect earth from his own people

a technician from the year 3000 in a future where humanity was conquered by the Badoon, Michael Korvac was worked to the brink of death from exhaustion, and his Badoon masters punished him for his 'laziness' by rebuilding him as a cyborg computer. But, with his computerized mind, Korvac was able to take control of the station's systems, and set himself up as a tyrannical dictator no better than the Badoon themselves. When his rule was overthrown by the Guardians of the galaxy (and a time-travelling Thor), Korvac fled into the past, thinking to change history itself and prevent the Guardians creation. instead, he found himself aboard the world-ship of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, and when Korvac tried to interface with its systems, he was granted the Power Cosmic. even as he reshaped his body in his ideal image, Korvac's consciousness expanded, letting him see the universe it its totality. Korvac then abandoned any petty thoughts of hatred or revenge, instead taking up the belief that by his hand, the cold, uncaring chaos of the universe could be remade into an orderly, benevolent paradise.

Korvac came to modern day earth, adopting the alias Michael, indulging himself in a carefree, ordinary mortal existence denied him his entire life while his power grew, keeping himself and his power secret, for while confident he could defeat any singular cosmic being, he could not stand against even the most tenuous alliance of such if he revealed himself too soon. Seeking companionship, Korvac chose a mate for himself, a fashion model named Carna, unaware she was the daughter of the Collector, an Elder of The Universe whose precognition made him aware of Korvac's threat, and thus used Carina as his catspaw, to seduce and slay Korvac with his equally formidable cosmic power, only for Korvac to learn of the plan while seducing Carina instead, and he slew the Collector.

Unfortunately for Korvac, this deed, while at first untraceable, ultimately led the guardians and avengers to his doorstep in Forest Hills, Queens, and forced Korvac to reveal himself in a pitched battle where he slew almost every single hero present, but ultimately willed himself to death after he looked to Carina, and she silently rejected him for his still-human brutality and violence. realizing how short he fell of godhood, Korvac used his last breath to revive those who had fallen, unaware that Carina would follow him into death moments later.

since then, Korvac has for the most part stayed dead, despite time paradox gambits or by the unwitting use of Hank Pym's Infinite Mansion technology

the brother of Wonder Man, Eric Williams went bad at a young age, driven partly by contemptous envy of his more successful brother. Eventually becoming a successful criminal with Maggia ties, upon learning his brother died fighting the Avengers, Eric used his connections to don the gear and identity of the Grim Reaper to take his revenge, blaming the Avengers for their inability to save Simon, later expanding his vendetta to the Vision, whose mind was based on Simon's making him an affront to the Grim Reaper. Not even Wonder Man's return to life could quench the Grim Reaper's hatred, so caught up in it that he saw Simon as a perverse reanimated mockery of himself. Eventually, the Grim Reapers love and hatred for Simon became too much even for him, and realizing he'd devoted himself to destroying the only family he'd had, he committed suicide by hurling himself from a cavern cliff.

Unfortunately for the Avengers, the Grim Reaper's story doesn't end there. His lover, the mutant sorceress Nekra reanimated him twice via necromancy, turning him into an undead horror that constantly thirsted for the life force of the living, starting with Nekra herself. in this state, the Grim Reaper would resume his attacks upon the Avengers, most notably with two separate incarnations of the Legion of the Unliving, with the second instance resulting in his full restoration to life and sanity as a side effect of Wonder Man's own second resurrection. since then, the Grim Reaper has resumed his criminal ways, lashing out at Wonder Man and Vision, and frequently dying in the process only to return from the grave to start the whole thing over again

they all laughed at me: be it his half-giant heritage, loutish attitude, constant defeats or blind devotion to enchantress, The Executioner is mocked by all of Asgard save for Balder

one of Thor's earliest and more persistent enemies, Skurge was born to asgard with mixed heritage, his parents being both Asgardian and giant. this made Skurge as much an outcast as his sheer size and brutal attitude, and such the only life he had was a warrior, earning the title of The Executioner for his battle prowess. Longing for the beuatiful Amora, Skurge gratefully volunteered his eternal loyalty and service to her when the Enchantress came seeking a bodyguard and enforcer. from then, he was at Amora's constant side, simply happy to bask in her presence even when her schemes got them both banished to Earth, fully aware Amora would only make room in her cold heart for the mighty Thor, driving Skurge to give his all against the thunder god in vain hope for even a scrap of Amora's affection. But ultimately, Amora abandoned Skurge not long after they were allowed to return to Asgard as reward for defending their home against the fire giant Surtur.

Despondent, Skurge joined Thor, Balder and a host of Einherjar in a seemingly doomed mission to the depths of Hel itself to free the still-living souls of mortals she'd enslaved. And while briefly duped into betraying his allies, upon learning he'd been deceived Skurge not only struck back against Hela's illusionist, but then sacrificed his own weapon, Bloodaxe, which had been all but a literal part of him for centuries, to destroy the Naglfar, the ship of the damned meant to bring Hela's undead legions against Asgard at Ragnarok and among the symbols of her rule, throwing all of Hel into chaos so that he and his allies could escape with those they'd come to rescue. but to escape back to the lands of the living, they would have to cross the bridge Gjallerbru, and Hela's uncountable undead hordes hot on their heels.

and in that fateful moment, Skurgefinally rose up and became a legend...

since then, Skurge has for the most part remained dead, barring all-too-brief resurrections that are revealed as impostors, or end with his willful choice to return to his eternal reward, for such is the right of He Who Stood Alone At Gjallerbru

Dracula, iconic villain of Gothic Horror, based on 14th century tyrant Vlad Tepes III, better known as "The Impaler" for his habit of impaling the bodies of his enemies on tall spikes as he spend his life protecting southeastern Europe from Turkish expansion. but from those origins, English author Bram Stoker introduced the western world to the count and the popular conception of Vampires in the novel Dracula, summarized here by Overly Sarcastic Productions:

in the marvel universe, the events of Dracula indeed happened, but decades later, Dracula was revived to plague the world once again, this time turning his dark attentions towards America, and his titular comic, Tomb of Dracula, detailed both his depredations and the efforts of those vampire hunters who sought to end him once again, until the final issue, when Dracula was destroyed in climactic battle with the aged vampire hunter Quicky Harker. a VERY abridged summary of the book's events are detailed in the obscure animated film 'Dracula: Sovereign of The Damned"

however, Dracula proved too popular a villain to let stay dead, so he was once again revived, first for a short lived second ToD series, before menacing the marvel universe at large, most famously fighting the X-men when he decided to make Storm his bride, and being the central antagonist of the Dr. Strange Montesi Formula arc, which ended with not only Dracula's destruction, but that of every single vampire in the Marvel Universe, a storytelling decision that would actually stay in place for a good ten years.

but, eventually, enough Marvel writers wanted to do vampire stories again, and so in 1994, the formula's spell was broken, and sure enough, Dracula was among the first vampires brought back. Since then, Dracula has been a recurring presence in the marvel universe, though never again reaching his 1970's popularity, despite taking major roles in the beloved "Captain Britain & MI-13" series and the "curse of the mutants" X-men summer crossover, and a short-lived romantic feud with Deadpool for the hand of monster Queen Shiklah

one of the iconic golden age teen sidekicks, James Buchanan Barnes was an army private in WW2 who discovered that his bunkmate, Pvt. Steve Rogers was secretly Captain America, the star-spangled sentinel of liberty. for whatever reason, Cap took the lad under his wing as sidekick and partner, taking the fight to the Axis hordes, until tragically, during the final days of the European Front, Bucky and Cap seemingly gave their lives to stop a Nazi bomb drone, their bodies flung into the North Sea. Cap would remain frozebn in ice for years before being found and thawed by the Avengers, but Bucky's death was certain, and would haunt Cap for years afterwards. it even came to a point where the golden rule of comicvs was "Only Bucky stays dead."

that is, until wrier Ed Brubaker broke that rule at the start of his now legendary run, revealing via retcon that Bucky had in fact barely survived the blast and oceanic exposure, where he was found by Russian intelligence, before being remade and brainwashed into the Winter Soldier, a story VERY loosely adapted into the second MCU Captain America movie of the same name.
