    The Cherry Blossom Princess: Tao met the princess when he saved her life they fell in love, he would do anything for her and anyone that harmed her would face his wrath.

    Once a local warlord sought to conquer his neighbor kingdom. The warlords army was powerful and outnumbered the smaller kingdom 3 to 1. The first battle of the war occurred at a small village. The villagers were no match for the massive force that was set against them and were quickly wiped out save a single child who escaped while playing in a nearby forest.

    The army was met the next day by a lone man in black. The swordsman cut a swath of destruction through the warlords forces before finally cutting off the head of the warlord himself their master destroyed the army fled.

    Of the Swordsman in black though no sign was ever found. Some say he died that day, some that he lived on. No one knows.

    Tao as the man I black is known to the few who ever meet him and survive is almost a figure of legend. The tales spread far and wide of a man in black who appears seemingly at will, and disappears almost as suddenly. What is known though is that Tao has little patience for injustice or for the greedy or corrupt. From corrupt mandarins, to savage bandits, to lethal assassins Tao has fought and killed them all in the name of Justice. His flashing steel, and brutal fists and feet crushing all opposition before him. Only then to disappear as mysteriously as he came.

    Detective John Lees past is as shrouded in mystery as the man himself. Always dressed in black the Detective is as unorthodox a figure as the Chinatown area he frequents. So many rumors and stories abound that few can separate fact from fiction anymore. The FBI, Internal Affairs all have performed investigations into his activities, but nothing has ever come from them. What is known though is that Detective Lee is as thorough a cop as they come and his clearance rate is as impressive as they come.

      Life of Gao Lao[/B]
      Gao Lao was born into the Gao family who had run the Cutting Wind wuxia style school for many generations. He was the second son of the family head to be, Gao Bang.
      Sadly, his mother died giving birth to Gao Lao, so he never met her. Her name was Ga Ling

      Already through his early years, it became apparent that he had not inherited the strong gene that both Gao Bang and Ga Ling had. This gene was all-important to be able to perform the Cutting Wind style, which focused ones external chi into sharp blades made of air.

      His father took many lovers during Gao Lao’s childhood and even though he had an older brother, named Gao Bao, Lao was never allowed to see or play with him.
      One of Gao Bangs lover tallied on Ga Ling. She had told her that she had, had a dalliance with a member of the Divine Body school shortly before getting pregnant with Lao. Bang got furious and beat up Lao, to the brink of death. Then he set out to reclaim his honor by killing his wife’s lover.
      He never made it home again

      The family head position fell back to Bangs father, Gao Pi. Everyone at the school shunned Lao. He was often starved and sometimes beaten without cause. Only one person made Lao’s life worth living. Mei Li, she often stole food for him or tended to his wounds after a beating.

      Though he was starved and beaten at a regular basis, he grew up very well. Soon he was bigger than most of the fully-grown men in the school. This lead to him being the trainer’s punching bag of choice. He fought back and protested as best he could but he had never been taught any Kung Fu, so his skills was pitiful compared to even the novices.

      He finally lost it when he was told that Mei Li was to marry his brother who hated him with a fury. He had after all caused both Bao’s parents to die. He challenged his brother and got beaten to the brink of his life again. Then he was banished from the school. Which was sadly one of the best things to happen in his life.

      He had been taken in and nursed back to health by a friendly older man. Though Gao Lao had lost his left eye, he made a full recovery. Lao then set out to find his real father. He found him at the Divine Body school. Sadly, he was already in his grave, right next to the grave of Gao Bang. They had killed each other in their duel.

      Gao Lao, now had no family left. His very existence had killed his mother and two fathers and alienated his own brother. He had been hurt most of his life and endured incredible pain. He sought admittance into the Divine Body school and vowed that he with their techniques of strengthening the body, would make it impossible for anyone to ever hurt him again.

      After years and years of training he found himself a wife and settled down near the school. He was happy for a time, but word of his survival and happiness reached his brother. His brother killed his wife and their newborn girl while Lao was out training. When Lao discovered this he lost his mind to anger. He assaulted the Cutting Wind School, killing dozens and injuring more before he reached his brother. He beat his brother to a bloody pulp, though not before hit Lao with a shallow cut in the right eye. The last thing he saw was Mei Li running crying to his brother dying body with two children in tow.
      He had done the very thing to those kids that had been done to him. He had put anger and honor first and they paid the price.

      Lao ran away, but his eye soon festered making him wander around in a feverish haze. He walked for days before he collapsed from the fever. He was found by the banished people of the forbidden Night Claw style.
      The normal people feared their style, not because what they were capable of, but for what the style was created to do. It was created to hunt the monsters in the night. It gave on tools to fight against the evil that hid in the deep forest, the mountains, the lakes and on the plains. That which could kill a man with a look or take over his body or his mind. The things that no one wanted to believe existed. That was why their style was forbidden. People did not like to be reminded of the things they feared.
      The Night Claws had developed techniques to hunt things in complete darkness. They used their inner chi to enhance their senses. He studied with the Night Claws for several years until he had mastered to see without vision. When he was not training his senses, he was training his body.

      The Night Claw style was dying out as they got no new disciples and all the masters was growing older and older. The elders decided that they would not make Gao Lao a part of their fall, so they banished him.

      Gao Lao began to wander. He traveled to see China in his own way. A long the way he got in a few fights, trying to protect people. Soon the word of him traveled faster than he did. About a blind man, who seemed to be able to see and was almost impossible to hurt. As the word went from tongue to tongue, he was soon a blind beast and not a man and the beast was not of mortal flesh, no its very hide was made of iron.

      Life of Shaun Lao Michaelson
      Shaun was born a native Chinese-American and grew up as mostly an American. Shaun is the youngest in a sibling group of five and the nearest is 11 years older than him. During most of his upbringing he spent with his drunken uncle who beat him on occasion, because his parents was busy with their carriers in corporate management (father, Mitch Michaelson) and as district attorney (mother, Ling Lao Michaelson).

      To help hide the bruises Shaun got when his uncle lost it, the uncle (Liu Lao) got him to begin playing American football. As Shaun grew up he grew a little faster than the other kids did and became quite good at playing linebacker for the football team.
      After almost losing his life to testicular cancer Shaun’s uncle pulled himself together. It might be because of the lack of testosterone or just because he got a wakeup call, but Liu Lao stopped drinking and even began practicing Kung Fu from books he had found at his parents attic.

      They never talked about the drunken beatings Shaun had gotten, but Shaun knew he was sorry for what he had done. Soon they started to practice Kung Fu together and both enjoyed it immensely.
      For Shaun it was all about getting the mind away from a busy day, where everyone at the football team demanded his best, while the school and his parents demanded he did well in all classes. His parent were always busy and when they finally paid him any attention it was to demand better scores in his test or commend on his football skills, never in any positive way though.

      Liu Lao sadly died the day before Shaun began in high school. Shaun felt that he was the only one in his family who mourned his passing and dutifully kept practicing, his uncles weird Kung Fu that spoke about using ones inner light to increase the power of one’s body and make the body more resilient to harm.

      When Shaun finally finished growing in the middle of high school, he was the biggest person on the school and towered over the rest of his family by at least a head.
      Now his football carrier really exploded, he could more or less manhandle every member on the opposing team at almost every game.
      Shaun drew many talent scouts and had a scholarship ready before his last year in high school.
      He choose Neotropolis Oceanic High and became a member of their team, The Wild Sharks.

      Already halfway through the first year he was a starting member on their defensive line. He beat the old School record of most quarterback sackings in a game, the second year. In the last game in the season on third year, he beat the old record in most sacking in a season by two. A pro leaguer previously held the old record.

      Life was good for Shaun. His team had just made it to the state finals. His parents was finally somewhat proud of him, even his siblings seemed to like his achievements. He was dating one of the hottest girls in school, who was of course a cheerleader. He suspected she was with him more out of status than out of love, but at this point, he did not care. Much to his delight, his parents did not like her and claimed she dressed scandalous. Shaun liked it and thought it was not as important to him as it seemed to some of his team mates, he hoped she would sleep with him before they both graduated.

      At the state finals the Wild Sharks, destroyed their opponents. Partially due to Shaun sacked their main quarterback early, who in his fall landed in a bad angle and dislocated his throwing arm shoulder. Shaun did not make it better when he was shoved in the back when he tackled their second quarterback and shattered his collarbone.
      The crowd got wild and started chanting a nickname he had been given on second year, The Beast.

      The enemy began to insult him and their anger almost transformed into hate before the match was over. They came at him like a wrecking ball. They really wanted to hurt him it seemed. Shaun took a few beating, rolled with some of the tackles and usually came out better than his assailants from the clashes.
      In the end the opponent’s trainer got expelled because he got too frustrated and started to accuse Shaun of using steroids and playing dirty.

      At the after party Shaun’s Girlfriend got a little too drunk and invited him home to her for some “fun”.
      Shaun had had a little to drink but he never liked the taste or the effect it had on his body, so he drove her car.
      On the way there, another driver drove over at red at high speed and smashed into the driver side of the car. The last thing Shaun saw was his older sister lifting her head from the lap of his teams quarterback lap before the cars collided and everything went black…..for good

      Shaun barely survived, but had broken almost every bone in his body and had lost both his eyes. The doctors told him that he would never walk again unaided and would most likely need help to even go to the toilet.
      Laying unmovable in a cast, not able to see and peeing in a plastic back, was unbearable. To avoid thinking of his ruined life and to pass the time, Shaun began to try some of the silly techniques in his uncles Kung Fu books. He had memorized them all to honor him as his family wanted to burn all he owned. Shaun still had the book stashed in a box under his bed, safely hid under his porno magazines.

      Despite his condition, his family rarely visited him. The sister he thought he saw in the other car never came. His friend the quarterback, named William Johnson, only came with the rest of the team and then he sounded awfully guilt ridden. Shaun’s girlfriend Elisabeth Ericson had only gotten minor scrapes and a broken arm. She only visited him once and that was just to break up with him.
      Therefore, Shaun lay alone in his room, practicing weird breathing exercises and tried to make his bones mend by the power of his mind.

      When the cast came off, he went into rehabilitation as soon as he was allowed. After just 2 month he surprised everyone by actually managing to walk. Shortly after he stopped going to rehabilitation and began going to a gym instead. Even though he could see nothing, he could still lift a weight and run on a treadmill. Still he practiced the inner exercises he had done at the hospital. He never felt he lifted enough, never felt he ran long enough.
      Shaun built up a body with no purpose and as he saw it no future.

        Wen is the eldest son of Xeuqi Zhou, the head of the Zhou family. He is married to a lovely young woman who is pregnant with their first child. Wen is one of the most powerful warriors in his family with skills and abilities far exceeding anyone else in his village. His family had not always produced powerful warriors.

        His family has been at war with the Xue family for centuries. There had been many chances for peace over the years but none have lasted. Tired of the constant stalemate, Wen’s Great Grandfather made a bargain with a powerful wizard. In exchange for granting his people great powers so they may defeat their eternal enemy the Xue clan, the Zhou clan would pay a tribute to the wizard and his descendants for as long as the Empire lasted. The wizard was allied with a Warlord who was profiting greatly from the fighting among the clans. The wizard saw the potential for even more profit and agreed to the deal.

        What Wen’s ancestor did not know, was that the wizard would offer the same deal to their enemies, the Xue clan. Instead of the Zhou clan gaining an advantage over their enemy, now they were once again evenly matched.

        The wizard had granted great speed to the Zhou clan and great strength to the Xue clan. The Xue clan warriors would be able to make powerful punches while the Zhou clan would have the ability to make several punches in the blink of an eye and have a greater ability to avoid being hit. The Xue clan, in addition to powerful punches, would have the ability to knock back any enemy they hit, rendering them prone and susceptible to easy attack.

        What the wizard failed to disclose was that only a few of each generation would be granted these extraordinary abilities. This angered both clans but they were powerless to do anything about it. Any warrior that tried to attack the wizard was summarily killed.

        Now something even more dangerous than the Xue clan has arisen to threaten the people of China. Wen must band together with heroes from across the land to put an end to this threat. To his chagrin, this means a temporary truce with his family enemies, the Xue clan.

          Hundreds of years ago, there lived 2 great and powerful clans that had been at war with each other for seemingly and eternity. One day, tired of the constant fighting and wishing prosperity for his clan, a powerful warrior of the Xue clan named Daoming proposed a truce. He had become enamored of the daughter of the head of the Zhou clan named Wei. His proposal was simple; the 2 clans would cease their endless conflict in exchange for Wei becoming his bride.
          The Xue clan was well known for their powerful strikes and being master swordsmen. The most powerful of their warriors were able to create thunder claps that deafen their opponents and hurl them backwards several feet. The Zhou clan was known for their blindingly fast strikes, able to hit an opponent several times in the blink of an eye. Their most powerful warriors were also able to move rapidly, much faster than a normal human, evading the powerful strikes of their enemy.

          The clan elders considered the proposal and reasoned that ending the fighting would benefit both clans and bring much prosperity. Wei was reluctant to become Daomings’ bride but consented out of respect for the family and for the benefit of everyone.

          Members of both families expected the union to bear powerful warrior children. While Wei and Daoming had many children, none would become more than above average warriors. What neither family knew was that a powerful wizard had cursed the couple and all children born of either family. He was angered over the ending of their conflict. This wizard was allied with a powerful warlord that was an arms merchant. With the ending of the centuries old conflict, the men would lose vasts sums of money and power.

          This continued for centuries with neither family able to bear powerful warriors with amazing abilities. That is, until a descendant of the cursed couple married an American woman. They bore 2 daughters who participated in many athletic endeavors including martial arts. The eldest daughter Amanda was a better and stronger athlete than her younger sister Jessica. Jessica was more agile and excelled at acrobatics, soccer, and track. Her martial arts skills, while good, were no match for Amanda’s. Amanda excelled at strength based contests including softball, certain gymnastics events, wrestling, and much more. Their parents doted on Amanda and showered her with affection and adoration for her many accomplishments and awards.

          The family grew up in a suburb of Neotropolis where their parents ran a buffet style Chinese restaurant. The combination of low prices, all you can eat, and average quality food was a success. Jessica and her sister worked there during their teenage years. Jessica’s sister was always the smarter of the two girls and won a scholarship to NIT for computer programming and graduated 2nd in her class. She was hired immediately after graduation by a megacorporation on the east coast and moved away from the family. Even then, Jessica’s parents continued to go on about how well Amanda was doing and why was Jessica wasting her time in business school?

          After graduating from business school, Jessica enrolled in NIT to study optics. Her plan is to combine her knowledge after graduating to open her own business. She was inspired by the founder of Firesite Optics, Elizabeth Richards.

          Recently, her parents sold their restaurant for an obscene amount of money and have retired to southern California. Jessica’s sister Amanda recently moved back to Neotropolis having accepted a high paying position with Dr. Sing’s company.

          While Neotropolis has its fair share of superheroes and villains, a new villain has recently arrived in the city terrorizing business owners, scientists, professors, and others. No one knows much about this new arrival except they are female, dress in dark red skintight clothing, is an accomplished martial artist, and uses a sword.

          Jessica had a brief encounter with the mysterious woman one evening while meeting with one of her professors. The woman slipped into the lab where they were working with other students and threatened the professor. When Jessica protested, the woman moved to strike Jessica but stopped at the last second. The woman said nothing to Jessica but her eyes were wide with surprise. The woman turned back to the professor and reminded him that his payment was due that week and that her boss would not be pleased if he failed to make it on time.

          Jessica currently works part time at the Golden Phoenix restaurant to pay for her small apartment and other basic needs. She keeps up with practicing gymnastics and martial arts during her free time to keep in shape. She needs the energy to keep up with the number of customers the Golden Phoenix gets on the weekend.


          Responsibility: School and work.

          Family: Her parents dote on her older sister while constantly comparing the two siblings. Jessica’s parents continue to ask her why she can’t be more like Amanda, even to this day. Amanda is always flaunting her superiority to her young sister Jessica. This has caused emotional issues for Jessica which makes her feel like she can never be good enough for her parents no matter what she does.

          Secret Identity: Jessica was inspired by her encounter with the mystery woman the press has dubbed the Crimson Dragon. She has increased her martial arts training regiments with the goal of stopping this mystery woman from hurting or terrorizing anyone. She has even begun going out at night dressed in a similar outfit fighting the local gangs. Her favored method of attack is fast punches, kicks and attacks with a war fan.

              Anna Segur is a member of Chimaera. They're an Anarchist organization with the goal of destabilizing the government. They were formed in the 50s by Communists but the fall of the Soviet Union left them unsupported. Since then, they've stuck with their mission but have "lost their way" with regard to why or what will happen if they ever accomplish that goal. It's just chaos for its own sake now.

              Madame Blitz was one of several Nazi superhumans that were captured by the Soviets at the end of WW2. The Soviets used genetic material from them to create supers of their own. Some were straight clones while others were engineered mixes. They were distributed to organizations like Chimaera to use in their Cold War machinations. As one got old or killed, another was created to take his/her place. Anna is the third clone of Madame Blitz to be assigned to the Neotropolis branch of Chimaera. She was born to a surrogate about 20 years previous to the current time of the game. Soon after, the ability to create more clones was lost due to degradation of the material and no source to replenish it after the breakup of the Eastern Bloc.

              Anna has been used in various schemes over the past couple of years since her training and "education" was deemed far enough along to allow her to participate. She was used mostly in simple smash and grab or destruction based missions so that there would be little nuance for her to consider. However, during one of these missions, she was contacted by a US government agent. The government knows of her situation though their own intelligence gathering on Chimaera. The agent briefly told her that Chimaera was lying to her and gave her an untraceable smartphone that she could use to circumvent their security and find out the truth on her own. Since then, she's been using it to access the internet and is becoming increasingly aware of just how much she's been lied to. She knows she can't just leave because they have the means to stop her but she is looking for any opportunity she can find to get away from Chimaera and start over.

                  Been giving a lot of thought to the in universe super soldier project. What makes for a good low PL (5 or 6) super soldier? one of the big things I'm considering is making them heroic scale rather than minion scale. Huge mechanical difference with very little additional expenditure. Makes them both far more rugged and capable of doing more damage.

                    Well, if you look at the general stats for veteran soldiers (aka, the SWAT-types and green berets who are listed at PL 5), you'll notice they appear to rely heavily upon their equipement and gear. The soldier doesn't meet PL defensively without his boy armor, nor does he reach offensive PL without his assault rifle.

                    To make a "super-soldier", all you'd need to do is have a combatant who meets the PL caps for an individual at minimum 1 PL higher than the rest of the military (ergo, PL 6), but without needing equipment or gear. Generally, that means having Strength 4-5 and Stamina 5, and then defenses and offenses to meet caps. So, when compared to other soldiers who would require equipment and gear to make it to PL 5, a soldier at PL 6 who meets caps without armor or weapons is thus a "super soldier".

                    Hmn... I could actually whip up a generic stat-block for that pretty quickly. Not really too hard.

                      I didn't notice it previously, but in the book, SWAT officers are actually more expensive than the Soldier template.

                      I think that you're going in the right direction. With the overall low PL of the setting, I'm looking for something that is a head and shoulder above the average soldier without being overwhelming. More Dark Angel or Beauty and the Beast oriented than GI Joe.

                      Kinda sorta vaguely interested in running a one off in that genre. It would be difficult to commit to another game at this point.

                        Doctor Tinhat vonKrank had been alive for many years and still had not found the secret of immortality. He had studied with that fool Mengele to find the answers and had failed. Bah! Yes, yes, he would work on finding the answers to the super soldier, the secrets of eugenics, but that did not the answer to Life Immortal! Even in Neotropolis, a place to collect the so called brilliant thinkers of the day but they were all fools! vonKrank had worked with medicines, he and worked with cybernetics but all too soon everything failed to work. He had even spawned several children to harvest for organs, but even that failed! He needed more time to have ALL the time. In his brilliance, he sought another solution, a creature of his own cells, one that he would carefully nurture to keep producing replacement parts, much like a lizard's tail. He would have his answer!

                        While that too extended the man's vast years, it was not enough, never enough. There came to be incompatibility issues, even it did not regenerate quickly enough. And so our good friend vanKrank passed away, his project coming into the possession of our soon to be captors.

                            PL 6 is actually a very good PL for a super-soldier: at the peak of most trained human-level combatants, but not quite at the level to be overtly super-human. Nevertheless, it should be of consideration that these super-soldiers are at PL 6 without any gear, while most other human combatants are reliant upon their weapons and armor to reach PL 4-6. Deprieved of his equipment, this super-soldier is fully capable of kicking butt on a street level against normal humans. He is capable of lifting 800 lbs in a dead-lift without breaking a sweat, athletic enough to outrun most normal humans, and tough enough to survive a knife-wound. Their advantages are geared towards a knowledge in subdual-type martial arts along the lines of Krav Maga than they are around simply shooting everything in sight (they're good at that too).

                            It should be of note that these super-soldiers increase their PL when they pick up armor or weapons better than a sub-machine gun. And in groups, they make full use of Teamwork to systematically take out targets with machine efficiency. Having a group of people with Expertise: Tactics and Teamwork will do that, and this makes a group of heavily armed and armored super-soldiers working in unison a terrifying challenge to be overcome. It's a good thing that these guys are not named-characters: more important Super-Soldiers ought to be better and likely of higher PL than these PL 6 grunts. Either that, or they've just got the customization option, which makes them more interesting than the base template. That doesn't mean these guys are easy to deal with though... If you're not bullet proof, these soldiers will tear you a new one, and then some.
