                                Background: Scientist Dr. Stuart Williams was an expert in robotics and artificial intelligences that worked at ASTRO Labs who’d recently learnt he was suffering from a highly aggressive cancer that would kill him in less than a year. Devastated over his situation, Dr. Williams threw himself into his work in order to distract himself. This ended up straining his already fragile marriage, as Dr. Williams had not told his family about his illness as he didn’t want to burden them any more than they already were going to be when he passed, but backfired as his wife took their young children and left Dr. Williams. Pushed further into his growing depression, Dr. Williams threw himself into his work with an even more intense dedication to cope with his loss.

                                It was around that time that the Freedom League defeated the android Argo and brought his inert form to ASTRO Labs to be studied. Because of his expertise, Dr. Williams was part of the small circle of specialists allowed access to the potentially dangerous artificial being. As the scientists learned about the way Argo was constructed and the fact that he was more akin to a synthetic being rather than an android than what was first thought – Argo’s body perfectly mimicked human anatomy to the point that the only difference was that his body and an non-powered person’s was that his was comprised of a man-made organic substance that was called “Pseudo-Cells”.

                                The scientists learned that the Pseudo-Cells was reactive to outside stimuli despite the fact that Argo was “inactive” at the time and the fact that his body’s Pseudo-Cells were resistant to all forms of disease made the possibility of serious medical benefits very likely, and Dr. Williams immediately saw a possible cure for his own medical issues. The months that followed were filled with the scientist being very careful as he monitored the progress of his co-workers as they tested for possible side-effects of the Pseudo-Cells used on test subjects until they’d progressed past animal testing.

                                Unfortunately there are those in society who object to the use of animals in such a manner, no matter what the potential benefits and after several and soon as word spread in the scientific community of what was the project team was working on the number of protestors grew in front of ASTRO Labs. Eventually those in charge bowed to the public outrage of several animal rights groups and closed the Pseudo-Cell project. Dr. Williams was beside himself as he’d forgone any kind of therapy in lieu of using the project instead. Seeing his chances of surviving his disease slip away before his eyes pushed Dr. Williams past his breaking point and that night he snuck back into the project lab and set up the injection machine with a large sample of the Pseudo-Cells and laid himself on the procedure table.

                                Needless to say the pain was more than Stuart Williams had ever endured in his life and he passed out within seconds of the first injection into his bone marrow. When he awoke hours later the doctor found himself face to face with members of ASTRO Labs security who were asking exactly what he was doing in the closed lab. To say that Dr. Williams’ response was violent would be an understatement, and the majority of those men ended up being placed on disability following that day.

                                Other members of security, who’d watched on video feed, contacted the Freedom League for assistance and it was Captain Thunder who responded, confident he could handle the situation. It didn’t take the senior hero long to locate Dr. Williams but what happened when the rogue scientist tried to resist the hero’s efforts made the situation a strange one – as Dr. Williams’ newly gained powers manifested upon that first contact and he “took” the very arm that Captain Thunder had tried to grab him with. In the ensuing chaos of Dr. Williams’ powers allowing him to “take a piece of” Captain Thunder and somehow gain access to all of his powers; electrical manipulation, superhuman strength and resistance to injury and flight, he was able to effect his escape.

                                Once he’d found a place hide out in it didn’t take Dr. Williams very long to put together a theory about what had happened to him – something about Argo’s Pseudo-Cells had interacted with his DNA somehow and had granted him an aberration of the synthetic man’s power to mimic the powers of metahumans as well as a few enhancements to how his body worked he thought as he remembered throwing the security guards around like rag dolls. What Dr. Williams’ didn’t realize was that he also gained some of Argo’s mental traits, specifically a strong desire to take of the powers of the Freedom League and soon the former scientist was plotting his next move against that gathering of heroes.

                                When Dr. Williams made his move against the League he took them by storm: taking advantage of his possessing the arm of Captain Thunder to open the, then time, genetic-based security system of Freedom Hall and laid in wait for his next victim. Using the element of surprise, Dr. Williams was able to “take” limbs from Johnny Rocket, Star Knight, Daedalus, and Dr. Metropolis and with their powers added to Captain Thunder’s it wasn’t much trouble for the villain to take out Lady Liberty and Pseudo.

                                However the Raven had come to Freedom Hall when the other members of the League who were supposed to be at the Hall weren’t answering her attempts to contact them. She’d called Bowman in too back her up as well, which was fortunate as both of them were more or less immune to Dr. Williams’ powers given the fact that they were only exceptionally trained, Olympic-level athletes and not super-powered in any way. The Raven quickly had figured out the basics of Dr. Williams’ powers and devised a plan to deprive him of his stolen powers by exploiting the weakness of the heroes whose powers he’d taken.

                                After he was beaten and properly restrained, in power dampening shackles of course, Dr. Williams was taken to Blackgate Prison where he was subjected to all manner of tests by his former colleges from ASTRO Labs in an effort to undo the transformation he’d undergone. But after over a decade of trying it was determined that the process was irreversible by that point and time and Dr. Williams, or the Patchwork Man as he was called by the media, had no interest in trying to reverse the process and had broken out several times in an effort to take "limbs" from some of the most powerful heroes in the country.

                                At this point he is being held in a special cell in Blackstone Prison, designed by ASTRO Labs.
