  • The Tribute Universe Plot Seed Thread

The Tribute Universe is the setting created by DT "Sketch" Butchino. Characters from the setting appear in his Superlink products, namely his Acts of Villainy (as well as acts of Heroism) line of products. Over the past few weeks, I started working up some plot seeds for some of the characters, and figured I'd post them here.

    First up, Osprey.

The PC’s are either based on, visiting, or called out to the West Coast (if they’re visiting, the exact reasons for their visit is left up to the GM to determine). They learn that a number of local high-tech aerospace and defense firms have recently been attacked by Osprey. Careful analysis of video footage, from the attacks, reveals that he seemed to be searching for particular items during the assaults. Exactly what those items are is left up to the GM to determine. Some suggestions include specific pieces of electronics that he needs to repair his armor; pieces of gear that can be used to upgrade his armor’s weapons systems; or whatever the GM feels best fits his particular campaign.

Here’s a plot seed for Naga

A local museum has acquired several new artifacts for its collection, and begun advertising the fact in the local media. One of the artifacts is rumored to be of mystical origin, and has come to the attention of members of the Cult of the Naga (exactly what that artifact is, is left up to the GM to determine). They’ve relayed the information to Naga, who is planning to grab the artifact before it goes on display. How the hero(es) become involved is left up to the GM, but some suggestions include them being asked to a special showing; being called in as a consultant if they have a background in the archeology; being asked to make a donation to a charity the museum sponsors; or if they’re mystically inclined sensing that one of the objects isn’t quite what it appears.

If they GM really wants to spice things up, he can toss CrimeNet into the mix as well. Olivia Vega, through one of her many informants, has learned of the Cult of the Naga’s interest in the artifact, and plans to set a trap for Naga. She’s placed a contract on Naga’s head, and several villains are vying for it. Who they are is left up to the GM. When Naga makes his move for the artifact, they’ll strike.

        The Hit

A local criminal organization (use whoever fits the bill in your particular campaign), growing tired of the PCs constant interference in their operations, has placed a bounty on the heroes heads. They’ve contracted with Crimenet (or a similar organization) and Grendel has been brought in to help eliminate the problem. They want Grendel to send a message, and make sure that people understand that if you mess with them, you’ll get the same treatment. How he goes about this is of no particular concern to them, as long as he gets the job done in a timely fashion.

Re: The Tribute Universe Plot Seed Thread

And here’s a plot seed for using H.A.D.E.S. I took the liberty of creating a H.A.D.E.S. front company that may make another appearance at some point.

Over the past few months local law enforcement agencies have been encountering a large number of criminals armed with state-of-the-art weaponry, and they’re growing increasingly concerned. Unable to identify the exact source of the weapons, they’ve gone to the PCs for help. What little information the authorities have, they’ll pass along to the PCs. They can tell them that all of the weapons appear to be of similar design, and are newly manufactured. Other than that, things get a little murky, as the local gangs are pretty tight lipped as to who their source is.

If the PCs do a little digging with any underworld contacts they may have (or a generous GM can provide them with one to help speed things along), they’ll discover (DC 25) that the majority of the weapons can be traced back to a European backed weapons firm called Advanced Research and Engineering Systems, or A.R.E.S., which set up shop in the US approximately a year ago.

While the company looks “clean”, it’s actually a H.A.D.E.S. front company selling what they consider, “lower end” products to generate revenue for a number of research projects the group is working on. They use a number of cut-outs and middle men to hide their actual involvement in the weapons sales. They’ve been unloading stock piles of weapons to local organized crime groups for the last six months, and it’s proven to be a much more successful program than they anticipated, as each of the groups tries to get “one up” on its competition. If things keep going well, as in the PCs don’t disrupt and shut the operation down, they’re considering offering up even heavier weapons to the groups, and expanding the program to other areas.

Where the A.R.E.S. plant is located, who they’re selling weapons to, and which H.A.D.E.S. faction is behind A.R.E.S. is left up to the GM to determine.

Another option that could make for some interesting roleplaying is that a rouge faction of H.A.D.E.S. has set up A.R.E.S. without P.L.U.T.O.’s knowledge, to fund some off the books research, or to set themselves up as a break-away organization. How that plays out is left to the GM to determine.

A local crime boss (preferably someone the PCs have had a number of run-ins with), who the PCs were responsible for being sent to prison, has died (his exact cause of death is left open), and his family/associates (whoever happens to fit the bill in your campaign), has vowed revenge on the PCs. They’ve place a 5 million dollar bounty on the PCs heads, and put the word out, through Crimenet, that they want the PCs dead within the week. As a result, the PCs get word that at least a half dozen of professional assassins are trying to cash in on the bounty. Who they are, is left up to the GM, but some suggestions include: Blackjack, Gallows, Headshot, Manticore, Mink, and Silverfang. Each of the villains is operating independently, but several of them may be temporarily willing to work together until the contract is completed, and split the bounty.

If any of you try these out, I'd really like to hear how they played out.

I've got a few new plot seeds to add to this, but they're on my flash drive at work.

                  Up from the Depths

The PCs are contacted by W.A.R.D. (or whatever agency happens to fit the bill in your campaign). They’re informed that a Japanese research vessel has recently discovered what appears to be the submerged wreckage of an alien vessel, deep in Pacific Ocean (don’t worry about the exact location, but it will be somewhere in international waters).

While W.A.R.D. is capable of recovering the vessel on its own, they’ve requested the PCs assistance them by providing security for the recovery team, as they’re not sure what the ship may contain. Another option is for one of the PCs to have some sort of knowledge that may prove useful in determining the craft’s origin, or investigating its contents.

Unknown to all, H.A.D.E.S. had an informant amongst the research ship’s crew. The informant has informed H.A.D.E.S. of the ship’s presence, and H.A.D.E.S. plans to steal the ship, once it’s brought to the surface, for its own purposes.

The origin of the ship, and its contents are left up to the GM to determine.

Re: The Tribute Universe Plot Seed Thread

                    Hang em' High

The PCs learn that local law enforcement authorities are growing increasingly concerned. Over the past few weeks a number of local underworld figures have been found murdered (who these figures are is left to the GM to determine). From what law enforcement officials have been able to determine, all of the murder victims have either been hung or killed by a short-range shotgun blast. While all of the murders up to this point have been crime figures, law enforcement officials are worried that the violence may spillover and innocent civilians may get caught up in it.

How they learn this information is left up to the GM. It may be through contacts they have, through their civilian identity, or the authorities may contact them directly. Use whatever method helps move the story along.

A bit of research on the PCs part (DC10) will easily be able to determine that the M.O. fits Gallows. With a further bit of digging they’ll be able to determine that “word on the street” is that one of the local crime families is making a move on their rivals (who these two groups are is left to the Gm to determine, but it’s suggested that the PCs have encountered members of these groups before), and has hired Gallows to eliminate them.

If the GM wants to make things a bit more interesting, the PCs may stumble across the fact that Gallows was hired through Crimenet (DC25), as they’ve kept their involvement in this quiet.
