  • 1 part Alternate Form and 1 part Possession. How to make this?

    Hey folks,

So here is the concept: character can leave their body and inhabit one made of molten rock.
All the molten rock powers are easy. It's the possession that I'm finding hard.

At its base, it's an Alternate Form. The trick is how to say he doesn't 'transform' into it, he just creates and inhabits it.

In the Mental Powers Profile, Astral Projection has a -2 pt side-effect hat says physical body left defenseless and immobile. Can I add that to an Alternate Form as a whole? It's not really a power. Also, are Alternate Forms sustained? I'd like for this body to melt away if the character is knocked out - he is automatically 'snapped back' to his body. His real body needs to be close by, this isn't a 'bathroom telepath' or whatever.

Ideally, any physical damage/effects done are gone but mental ones remain.

Any ideas? If it gets too crazy, I can always just handwave it..maybe as a complication though this power doesn't seem like a hindrance - almost a benefit really; enemies think they got him when in fact he is somewhere else.

    Thanks!

I think you're most of the way there. Since you only control one at a time I would make the empty body and the limited range a Complication. The "snapbacK" is the only advantageous element I can see, so I might recommend a Triggered Subtle Teleport with a Medium Flaw (base body); If the range is 30' or less, I'd make that a 1p feature or possibly even free. Also, I might recommend Morph 1 for the Lava Form or it will be somehow apparent that it's him. I'd be more likely to allow a cheaper or free snapback with the Morph, since functionally it hides the connection between the two forms.

EDIT - Forgot the damage aspect. That could be a Self Healing effect that is also Triggered by a knockout, linked to the 'Port. You could make "Doesn't heal mental conditions" a Flaw, but unless those are particularly common, I'd recommend that as a Complication, so he'd return to his body with a mental condition and a Hero Point.

Do you want to worry about his body being around and being vulnerable and attacked? I'm kind of thinking not, since that seems like a major headache. If not, then I'd probably go with the handwave Complication approach. This doesn't seem like a huge difference, mechanically, than just changing into a rocky molten form. It's more of a description. And, as JDRook noted, you can add the triggered Healing power if needs be.

I went through something similar with a character who'll be appearing in a near-future installment of Rogues' Gallery; after getting input from Jon L and Steve, I figured the best way to write it up was a Complication (since the villain's mortal, non-powered body was usually hidden safely away). The Triggered Teleport (when rendered "unconscious") is the right mechanic for the lava form melting away. The other alternative is to make the Lava Body a Summoned minion (with the heroic and controlled extras, along with mental link), with the same Complication as before.

        All my best.

I generally avoid minions, but this is very workable. It removes the need for the Triggered Teleport and Heal, letting the range limit and mental damage (psychic feedback) be carried by Complications, so it's definitely simpler.

Taking it even further, if the original body is not particularly powerful (my usual guideline is less than half PL and points) you could make the Lava Form his base form and the non-super form a complication in the Captain Marvel/Billy Batson style. No minion building and all of the fiddly bits are handled by Complications.

            Alright!

My inclination here is to go with the summon power; make it a high-powered minion. Maybe with the feedback extra (but limited to only mental?)

I'm leaning toward making the out-of-body thing a complication. He'll have to stay close, so he'll want to make a secure spot. He is an NPC villain for the party to fight so, it's more of a complication for them? Just when they think they'very taken him out, he melts away and escapes. At least the 1st time anyway.

            Thanks everyone!
