  • Sentient shapes shifting weapon

First and foremost, the weapon is a an energy-based extra dimensional alien intelligence bound into a fifty pound orichalcum statue. That being said, I've tinkered with a Removable Array and Sidekick with Alternate Form, but none if it really seems... correct. Any pointers?

Can the weapon move and act on its own? If it can, I'd build it using Sidekick; if it can't, I'd make it a removable/easily removable device. Any benefits from its being sentient can be represented using Features, e.g. Feature [Mentor] if it occasionally provides advice to the wielder.

I think the best way to go about any particular build is to think of what exactly the effects are going to be. What can the statue do? Does it truly need independent action, or could you array a number of effects and apply the descriptor "sentient statue/bound spirit/etc?"

Sidekicks and minions can get expensive. For example, does that flying horse need to be anything other than the personified Flight effect (Affects Others and Platform)? Will it be fighting along side you, or justification for flying? If the latter, then all you need is Flight. That dancing sword? Maybe it's just Blast. And so on.

Fair assessment. The statue is dormant for the most part, teleporting itself to the wielder's possession and can morph itself into melee weapons similarly to the T-1000: knives and stabbing weapons, but it can turn into a shield or baton/stave if need be. The entity has been described as an "alien intelligence", just completely foreign to what we can comprehend, except that if has communicated that it no longer wishes to be here, whatever that might mean.

Both versions I came up with work, but they just feel incomplete or, I don't know, something is just off about them.

If you can only attack or defend, then make an array. If you can do both at the same time, then buy both effects at full cost. The shapeshifting into different melee weapons is Variable Descriptor 1 (melee weapons), which would account for bludgeoning (something blunt like a club), piercing (stabby like a dagger), or slashing (like a sword). Whether you want to add Improved Critical, or other effects, e.g. better at Disarming (Improved Disarm and Weapon Bind), or better at breaking other things (Improved Smash, etc).

If it can talk to you, what game effects can it communicate? Warn you of danger or let you see what you normally couldn't? (Danger Sense, Radius Vision). Can you stick it out in front of you and see around corners without yourself being seen? (Remote Viewing)

Work backwards from effect to descriptor.

How powerful is the welder supposed to be without it?

One method of handling sapient artifacts with otherwise powerless weilders (like Johnny Thunder) is to make the artifact the character and buy the wielder with Sidekick ranks

The character in question is from an Earth where all the supers have Divine as a descriptor for their abilities. He's PL 12 with +2 atk/-2 dmg. He has Str 6 and Sta 6, a low-level Damage (necrotic touch), Healing, Regeneration, and he can fly TWICE as fast as a man can walk (we love hamming this up at the table). The necro touch isn't Str-based, so the player has thus far been using improvised weapons, to great effect. The character has proven himself a competent tank for the group (he went toe-to-toe with a demon spawn Batman, even pistol-whipping it to Staggered), but lacks versatility. The entity is/was a PL 12 Cthonic genie who struck Faustian bargains. It originally tried to make a deal with the groups Yellow Martian, promising to people the hero's Bleed Citadel with other Yellow Martians in exchange for being released from it's dimensional anchor in the Bat cave, but after it was bound into the statue the godling, who desired any weapon he needed to ensure the cycle of life and death, became it's "owner".

                Re: Sentient shapes shifting weapon

You say you've already tried building it as an array of weapons and defenses AND as a sidekick, but it still feels "off?" Then there's probably some aspects of it you wanted to see emphasized that haven't quite been covered yet.

Do you imagine the entity talking to the character, possibly the group, on occasion? Maybe relaying information or assisting in a variety of actions? Being able to fashion new weapons on the fly? Posing a low-level threat to everyone even while it's an inanimate statue?

What trait(s) do you want to see emphasized that you don't feel is addressed in your builds?
