  • Permanent/continuos effect question

So, I'm new here and relatively new to the M&M system (mostly basic, simple stuff so far)- I'm wondering if there is a way to easily model someone with a 'constantly-on' attack power effect.

The idea that I'm looking at is sort-of similar to a constant aura. The character has a Perception Area (auditory) effect, a one level Affliction (Entranced) which occurs whenever they speak. With effort, they can heighten the effect (to either sonic damage or a more robust affliction), but it occurs at the basic level whenever they speak, to anyone who can hear them.

Permanent doesn't seem to work, since Increased Duration can't go all the way from Instant to Continuous. Reaction (whenever I speak) seems a bit too broad to be a viable Reaction trigger (though I could be wrong).

So is there a way to do this, or should I scrap this idea and move to something easier?

Reaction is usually reserved for times when something should fire even if the character can't take an action at that moment.

Since talking requires an active (Free) action on the character's part, buy the action down to Free and then add a complication that it is always/usually on.

It won't always be a detriment to being on, but when it does, you get an HP. And it's "cheaper" to slowly remove it as the character gains control over time.

What you're describing is basically the Fascinate Advantage, only requiring minimal (Free) action instead of Standard and not tied to an interaction skill.

The 1-degree Affliction as a Perception Area Reaction seems fine. I would set the trigger as "target hears the subject's voice", which allows for prepared or deaf characters to avoid the effect, and also makes the PC's voice a strategic target for craftier opponents. That's a base cost of 3p/rank. If it really is always on, meaning that even allies and innocents are affected every time they speak, I would allow a -1p/r Permanent Flaw, but if the PC can speak without it, no flaw; if they can speak without affecting allies, that's Selective.

Kenseido's buy to Free Action is feasible, although I'm not a fan of mid-range action attacks; Standard is . . . well, standard and Reaction is effective but costly, and playing the middle ground gets troublesome IMO.

Yeah, I agree JDRook about making "attacks" a Free action. As a GM, I would be seriously reluctant to allow this power into one of my games. A power like this just messes with too many elements and makes for a very messy game.

My build of the X-Men's Beast features a power I call Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness, which is nothing more than the Fascinate Advantage made into a Free Action. My build for Deadpool does similar using Taunt.

I've had players —newbie and veteran alike– play both characters many times. It's never been particularly overwhelming... It's a definite bonus compared to the Standard Action the Advantage normally requires, but, that is why they're called "Extras."

Sure and a lot of this depends on the player.

If you give some players Area Effect attack w/ Selective, they will spam it all the time. They won't even attempt any other solution to a problem.

Other players put more thought and roleplaying into their characters, and it would only come up in certain circumstances.

Duration can mean different things - sometimes it's the effect, and sometimes the result.
In fact, reaction effects are typically "Sustained". That means the character has to spend a free action each turn to maintain his fire aura - but the effect (in this case, Damage) in relation to the target is still just "Instantial".
