  • Could you help me out with Vehicles?

If you guys don't mind, I'd like to ask for help regarding Vehicles and their traits.

As I understand, Vehicles have traits such Size, Speed, Defense etc. I get how these stats work... aside from Defense. This one is a bit of a headscratcher to me.

For example: the basic medium-sized Vehicle (i.e. a motorcycle) has Defense of 0. But... the actual stats for a motorcycle list its Defense as 10. So, what does Defense represent here? I know it measures how hard it is to hit the particular Vehicle, but where does this stat come from? It clearly isn't just a reflection of the Vehicle's size. Is it about speed, then? Maneuverability?

BTW. If I understand correctly, Defense is, basically, a Vehicle's Dodge value? So, if somebody shoots at a Vehicle, you calculate the result normally - you just use Defense in place of a human character's Dodge? And the driver's skill at driving doesn't factor in? Neither does the Vehicle's actually speed - or whether it is moving at all?

I'd be grateful for your help!

Don't confuse DEFENSE BONUS with the final defense score (defense bonus +10). A motorcycle has defense bonus 0 , and defense 10.
Also, you should consult the advanced vehicle rules introduced in the Gadget Guides, which will clarify these issues.

Hmmm, wait a minute. So, if a motorcycle has defense bonus 0 and defense score 10, then where does the +10 come from?

I have actually read the vehicle section of Gadget Guides and it didn't help...

10 is the base defense that everyone has. So if your character has no Fighting ranks and hasn't bought any Parry, they still have a base defense of 10. Some vehicles, due to their size, effectively have a negative defense bonus, so it's even easier than hitting an untrained civilian, like smacking an elementary schooler.

Hm. So, the table with sample vehicle stats doesn't list the vehicles' Defense, but their Defense Class? But it clearly says "Defense" in the table, which is the same term use two pages earlier to describe the basic bonus / penalty for each vehicle size...

Yeah, it's kind of an artifact of that they re-used most of the material from 2E. I think there used to even be a few areas where the math doesn't add up because they forgot to adjust the values, but the errata caught up with that.

Ack! This is a little worrying... Now I'm worried, what other errors are there in the books? I have Hero's Handbook Deluxe Edition and that mishap with vehicles' Defense is still there... Is there some sort of official errata around?

Anyway, so to be clear: when the table says that a vehicle's Defense is 8 that this is the number you roll against when you try to hit? It's not 8 + 10?

BTW. I checked and Gadget Guides used the same kind of notation for vehicle stats... It also lists Defense, not Defense Class! *mind blown*

No, although this thread pretty much covers them, some of which have been fixed in various releases.

Yes. It's an artifact of the earlier tables being formatted that way, and them keeping the format for later releases to avoid confusion.
