  • Interaction of Split Attack and Penetrating

How does a power work when it has split attack and penetrating? Does the penetrating split as well? What if you have partial ranks of penetrating? I would probably rule that the penetrating splits up as well. As to partial ranks, I would rule that you have to split them as well. I am playing 2e. I realize penetrating is different in 3e, but I'd like to know what 3e players think as well.

In 3e, penetrating is a flat extra. I would say yes. If you have "rank 10 damage, penetrating 6, split" attack power, you might say attack 1 is "rank 5 penetrating 3" and attack 2 is "rank 4 penetrating 4" or however you want to split it. Same applies to a partial rank extras I suppose. Don't usually see a lot of partial extras.

Much the same for me. As a GM, I don't tend to force a particular mathematical model for allocating ranks when it's not 1 for 1, but I do request consistency. An even split is reasonable. Letting one attack take all the ranks it can is fine. But you can't mix and match short of buying them up as Dynamic slots of an array. And I prefer that the choice make some narrative sense.

One house rule I do kind of follow is allowing splitting attack bonus instead of attack ranks. That one, I let players choose which they split on a case by case basis.

By the book, Split allows you to allocate the ranks each attack. Otherwise it would say the split must be set when you buy the power. Frankly, changing more for split is a waste of points. Two 5 rank attacks are rarely as good as a single rank 10 attack. And being able to vary that to 7/3 and 5/5 and 2/8 round by round doesn't really sound like its worth 2 power points.

Oh not that part. I was talking about allocating partial ranks of something like Penetrating. Sorry for the confusion.
