  • Improved Critical on combat maneuvers

Is this legal? They're attacks that have a save if they hit, but most of them are opposed rolls. Rush, grapple, trip, overrun, disarm, slam, sunder. That kind of stuff.

You only consider the roll to hit. As long as the attack has a roll to hit, you can add Improved Critical to increase your chances of scoring a critical hit. The results from that critical hit might vary due to descriptors of the combat maneuver.

    Hope that makes sense.

I would definitely allow Improved Critical (Trip), Improved Critical (Disarm), etc. As long as the attacker is rolling to target someone in combat with a negative effect, Improved Critical is viable.

It shouldn't be a problem with anything that in 3e has an Affliction style resistance roll. With others I'm more dubious, since all-or-nothing type affects have had a questionable history in M&M--but some, like disarm, aren't particularly strong effects in the first place and are more like only-1st-stage-effect Afflictions.

Re: Improved Critical on combat maneuvers

I'd argue that you could apply the Improved Critical to the weapon type (Unarmed, Force Beams, Swords, etc) or to a combat maneuver (which would make it valid for all weapon types). It is an interesting question...
