  • [2e IC] Misfits of the New World

The world had changed. On March 15, 2014, the sunlight that hit the earth seemed to be carrying something in it. Everywhere that the sunlight touched people spontaneously transformed. All seven billion. These transformations ranged from smelling like honey to controlling reality, from looking normal to going into full horror mode. Needless to say the world changed. The first month was crazy as everyone had to deal with the people at the more blessed end of the Ides Event terrorizing the weaker. Though there were those who protected people from the flippant "gods". This... is not their story.

All corners of the world were touched in someway, some more than others. During the month of chaos, Atlantic City was beseiged by one of the so called gods. Not physically, no, the god caused everything to run amok mentally and socially. People saw Atlantic City devolve into a crime ridden hellhole that no one in their right mind would want to stay in. Even after the month of chaos was over, you'd still hear horror stories coming from Atlantic City. Those who stayed there had their reasons. There are bright spots though. Paragons (Gods who fight against the injustice of other Gods) rarely pass through there, but a handful of less powerful people take it upon themselves to be protectors of the lawless town.

Tonight is just another night. You keep alert of the dangers out there, but sometimes you just gotta relax. There's a backroom poker game at Rose Garden, an out-of-the-way adult establishment that serves all types with no questions. You're there for the poker or for work or just because you have nothing better to be doing tonight. But soon you'll be having your hands very full.

Here's our set up. I'll give you guys some time to set where you are, maybe some small talk, but there will be something to do for you very soon.

I didn't catch the name of Jaime's place of employment, so I made one up. If it's not satisfactory, Rat Girl, you can either rename it or just say that Rose Garden is not your place. It'll give you a chance to explain why you're there for the latter

Chris was tending bar that night at the Rose Garden. The poker game had drawn the majority of the business, so the main cocktail bar was pretty quiet. He wiped down the counter-top once again that night, moving a bottle of chartreuse a quarter-inch so it lined up with the other bottles, just so he had something to do. He watched each tick of the minute hand of the bar's clock slice a little bit more off his chance of getting some good tips tonight.

Jack wasn't going to the Rose garden to play. Really he wasn't. He was just going to go grab a couple of drinks, maybe hang out with some friends. You know, the usual stuff, but as he ordered his drinks, a serving girl came out of the backroom and Jack caught a glimpse of the game. After that it was just a matter of time before the siren song lured him in. Half an hour later, he was laughing and ordering rounds for his new lifelong best friends, promising to make introductions with some of the staff for them, generally making the game an event, and all the while his small claim continued to grow. Not as fast as it could have of course. The time he got dealt aces over eights strait up, he knew enough to fold, and even managed to make himself do it.

Jaime was working that night. A few backrooms were left for the girls to do their job. Tonight was kinda easy though. She had made a friend in Robin Rivera, the Paragon known as Mindfreak. Jaime and Robin kept in touch ever since they met. Robin would always visit when she was nearby.

After their time together, Jaime was done for the night. In other backrooms there was poker going on. Sure she could get tips for being a serving girl, but Robin paid well enough that she didn't have to worry. Jaime followed Valentina, another worker and friend who had the ability to freeform float (but not fly), into one of the poker rooms and got her place. Fortunately or not, she hit the same room Jack was in. She waved with a mischievous grin as she sat down next to him. At least if she lost shed have someone to hang out with

OOC: Got permission to mention Robin. Jaime is wearing red silk pajama bottoms and matching button up top that is very light on buttons 😉

Before it all hit the fan, Edward would have been at a cafe in Paris sampling the latest cheeses and wines on a night like this. Circumstances being as they were though and having someone out for you head made it not the best idea to sit in a cafe on the street. Atlantic City and joints like the one he currently was drinking at provided a good hiding place with one of the last sources that had decent wine. Even if he was attacked, there was enough guns or criminals around to allow him to slip away and let everyone fight it out. Getting a decent bottle of wine was getting harder and harder with all the tensions in the city, but he was a regular and knew how to get the good stuff. As for adult entertainment, he wasn't adverse to it, but he had seen better. As always though due to his training, his eyes kept a careful watch of the area just, just in case. His eyes also saw his glass empty and motioned to the bar tender for a refill in his usual unspoken fashion all the bartenders of the establishment knew.

Chris sauntered over to the guy at the bar, polishing a glass that probably didn't really need it any more.

He wanted to ask for a fresh baked roll, some brie cheese, maybe a little jelly, and the finest wine in the place. This wasn't the sort of place to ask for that stuff. it wasn't even the sort of place to ask for wine if you were a guy, but his French accent gave him some slack thanks to stereotypes. Another good thing was that the place wasn't particularly packed. "One more glass of your red wine. The same one as before please." , replied Edward. He had enough to cover his tab at the end of the night, plus a big tip. After taking out one of the families underlings later in the night he would have more money. This particular underling was harassing some women who were just trying to make a living on their back.

Chris wasn't too fussed what the man ordered - hell, the man could have a glass of Drano so long as he settled his tab first. His drink was easy to figure out too, since they only carried two varieties of red wine; a cheap one, and a not-so-cheap one. Frenchie had ordered the latter. He grabbed the man a clean glass, since he was still hoping for some kind of tip, pouring him a generous measure.

Business, as if his business was drinking expensive wine in an adult entertainment establishment. Although in a way it was. The expensive wine bit was because he had become accustomed to the good stuff from his days as a sniper. Military leaders always had a few bottles laying around. One could also say he was here for pleasure since decent wine wasn't easy to get outside of the big casinos with lots of eyes examining each guest as potential mark for a con. "Work in a place like this? I am not nearly pretty beautiful enough.", commented Edward while pointing to the sort of girls. "Of all the places to drink in this end of town, this is the best one and for work later tonight a couple glasses of wine is in order. One should never go in to battle completely sober.", remarked Edward eluding ever so subtly to drinking some of the sacrificial wine of excellent vintage from the cult previously handled. "Working here seems like it would have its moments though.". Edwards eyes drifted to a few of the more attractive women eliciting clients to the backroom. He wasn't a monk after all.

Jack grins broadly as Jamie settles down near him "Just the ladies I was hoping for! Jamie, I was just telling Chowder over there, whose all the way down from Boston," here Jack points to a tall red headed man with a thick beard across the table from him, "that Valentina here might just be his cup of tea, and low and behold you two turn up." The last phrase is dead panned a little, but not enough to attract much attention unless you know Jack well.

Jaime smirks at Jack's assassessment. 'Chowder' has a healthy stack of chips in front of him. Not as big a Jack's, but she can see why Jack would want to preoccupy him. "Valentina is quite the treat. Also classically trained," Jaime smirks as the hands are dealt. She looks to Jack after she rolls her bet on to the table, "how long are you planning to be here? Maybe we can do get some dinner after I've won?" Her tone of voice says she isn't really looking for food.

Chowder grunts and slams his chips down triumphantly. "Raise," he snaps. It didn't take a mind reader to tell he was trying to keep his mind and eyes off Valentina. She was quite easy on the eyes, her wear aside, she was one of the better lookers in this place.

Impressive as a big... bet is, we don't want any premature finishes to the game. You want your wad to last all night don't you? Last thing you want is to be asking for a loan, to take a girl out after." Jack then picks up his cards and quickly scans them before saying, "Call" and pushing in a matching stack of chips.

It would have been an uneventful night, but that's not how things work in Atlantic City any more. You get a moment's peace and then...

Gunshots are heard from the outside of the Rose Garden. Some people get the urge to call the cops from the safety of the inside, but they are not afforded that luxury. An eight foot tall man in a business suit squishes the bouncer's head like a grape with one hand and rips the door open with the other to get in. The giant man is bleeding from gun wounds. He's still breathing though. A few patrons try to get close to the body, but they're batted away. He slowly sits down on a chair two sizes to small for him. With ragged breath he laughs, equal parts relief and fear. "I'm gonna die, y'know? Might as well be hangin out with whores and thieves before I go." He looks around, glassy eyed, at those staring at him. "I'm not gonna be able to pay for your door or your doorman," his words are lucid at this point, "give his wife or girlfriend or family my best." He reaches inside his coat pocket and pulls out a card with an address on it. "Tell Xander that I," his voice begins lowering into indistinguishable mumbling and coughing before leaning back. He's not breathing anymore.

In a place of fox looking dancers, a man teleporting wouldn't seem terribly out of place. So, that is precisely what Edward did. From his stool at the bar, he teleported next to the man and analyzed the situation like a seasoned soldier. Being in Atlantic city nowdays was much like war and a large man with bullet wounds asking for dying man favors would have fit perfectly in a battlefield. Edward wasn't about to let the man die without a fight though. The city had enough death and if he could help stop one more he would do all he could. With the eye of a battle field medic, he applied all he learned from wars to try and revive the man. While working, he spoke in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "Bring me some strong vodka.", he spoke. After pausing for a moment he added, "Anyone know this man or who Xander is?" It was worth a shot. Worst case scenario no one would answer and he would still have a man to help if possible.

Medicine check to try and help (1d20+9=25)
I would be more descriptive, but I am not well versed in medical stuff outside of the technology side.
