"Thank you Levi-san." said monster-Hitori. Levi had been the closest person he had made any emotional link with. The one that it pained the monster saw as food the most. His empty eyes regard him as he worked. "I... Sokolov said there was no cure... Do you think there is still some hope?"

Of course, the trap had to hit the rifle and mess with the firing mechanism. It still looked usable, but might as well have been a basic rifle. Still in a bit of daze Diego had to think fast. He wasn't out of it enough to just stand there forever and try to pick the people off. After all, they could be useful fountains of information. The issue of course was not getting killed or beaten to the point of death.

Going to line up a shot praying to every diety at once the rifle still worked, Diego stopped. He wasn't a soldier. His skills were in deception and as he learned deception is more important in battle than acumen with a rifle. "Put down your weapons before you hit your own people. You don't look like the kind who are skilled enough to fire past your people. Lets just talk this out and come to arrangement where I don't need to kill you.", shouts Diego as he brings up his rifle and does everything going to shoot except pull the trigger for real. At the same time, he tries to wiggle in a way that puts one of the rushers in the line of fire.

        Thursday 24 January 2019 - Flux

Alexandria grins and offers a light bump on the shoulder. She lays out the map that the contact in Flux gave her so both her and Sanders can see. She looks to assess the route given, as well as the strength of the convey and the assets the crime organization has given her. It wasn't routine, without her gear it could be difficult but with Sanders on board, Alex knew she had this on lock. She tried to identify key pieces of information from the map, such as force strength of the convey.

OOC: I'd like to Identify the best spot to lay an ambush for the convey. The plan is to find a turning in a more deserted part of the route to park the car so the convey would turn the corner and be forced to brake. Also, do we have disposition for the convey security detail? Finally, as for equipment that Alex would come out with, she would bring a comms device, her phone, her combat knife and her bike. She didn't bring a firearm as it would probably be detected and she wasn't expected to get in a firefight. Gear she would hope for is a submachine gun, pistol and body armour if its possible, as well as any devices good for ambushing like caltrops or explosives.

The response to Diego's attempt to talk his way out of the conflict is a chorus of discordant battle cries, followed by violence. While his maneuvering does result in one of the front line being shot in the back, the sturdy garb he weapons seems to take the brunt of it, and the masked combatant only grunts. This still does not dissuade him from attacking his original target. Soon Diego is caught up in a flurry of swinging blades and bludgeoning instruments as bullets whiz by him. It was chaos.

Marco did not supply Alexandria with information about the composition of the Stronghold force, but if it fits typical prisoner transport protocol, it won't be anything special. A van, or maybe armored truck, two a two people in the cabin and one or two in the back to monitor the prisoner and ensure no mischief was afoot. It wasn't likely to be an entire convoy. For one thing, Stronghold had checkpoints every couple of blocks and would have reinforcements nearby wherever the transport went. A convoy could all too easily draw attention or get locked down in city traffic. Once outside the city, that is likely when support vehicles would come into play. This does mean two things of importance: once combat is joined it cannot be allowed to turn into a protracted affair due to the quick response of reinforcements and once the transport is outside it will become more difficult to isolate due to the addition of support vehicles.

Once Sander has input the coordinates into her smartphone map she sets it down for the two of you two review the transport's scheduled route. Sander also takes the time to point out locations of know check points and Stronghold patrols that you will need to avoid as you move into position. With this added insight Alexandria is able to find a location that suites her needs in an area of the city's infrastructure that has yet to receive any repairs since the war.

"Sure. He didn't create the cosmos. But what about a saint or a prophet? Imperator had a vision of the world and a philosophy for living. Is it worth following? Is he worth honoring? Add in a little ceremony and I think all of the major religions were built on that right there. From Buddhism to the Abrahamic faiths.."

Alistair pauses to think on what he just said. Shifted his head from side to side, then shrugs and takes a drink from the flask. After taking a drink for himself he offers it over to Peter.

"Then again, I don't know a thing about religion."

Hitori knew what Levi was up to when he headed to the elevator. Fast as he was it was easy to interpose his mass between Levi and the elevator door. "My friend, I know you are doing this for me, but you should not go where our host has forbidden us to go, it would be impolite." he says, then leaning closer to Levi, he said in a hushed tone. "Remember Sokolov is helping us, but he is not our ally. He is a ruthless psychopath who refused to help me, and even hold on to this virus that turned me in this monster. I don't think he would have any remorse in killing you if you if you trespass."

Levi appreciates Hitori’s concern about the old doctor’s safety. “Thank you, Hitori, but I must speak with him.

Levi pauses a moment, his voice talking on a very serious tone. “It is not just for your good, but the good of our whole team that I must speak with him. Your infection is getting worse, my friend. While it is true that you are no longer infectious, I believe that this replicating virus will slowly continue to spread. You will become even more a danger to all of us. The end-result is that you will eventually kill one, maybe even all of us. The other end I foresee is having to kill you to prevent your degeneration into a murderous, feral creature.

Again the elder physician pauses to let this “sink in”. “This virus is beyond me. It defies almost everything I’ve ever studied about virology and genetics. Only the genius of Dr. Sokolov can save you and thus save our team.

Levi holds out his two empty hands. “I am harmless. Sokolov knows that I am the least dangerous of all our team. He will not kill me. Sure, he will not be happy, and he may even punish me in some way. But murder me? He is a man of reason and science despite his lack of empathy for others. I am as harmless as a ladybug to him. I must try. Please let me pass. Anything bad that happens is on my own head; you are not responsible.

Levi will proceed to the elevator and descend unless Hitori insists on physically stopping him.

The creature studied dr Levi for a moment. It impressed Hitori, such determination, such selfless dedication to the others. He couldn't but to move aside "My friend, I admire you deeply. I see you are honorable and I respect your conviction. You are also smart, as you worded your reply, it means I can't even escort you to see to your safety, otherwise I'll compromise your mission." he says, then he moves aside to let Levi pass "If something happens scream for me and I'll do my best to reach you." Hitori says as the doctor reaches for the elevator. He hopes this is not the last he sees of Levi.

Trading fire wasn't going to cut it, Diego thought after another bullet him in. Diego wasn't one to just sit there and fire back with six guys even if they might have been untrained. At first, he thought to collapse the tunnel on them if possible, but the folly of that idea was clear immediately. The Under City was already unstable enough as is without him adding to it. He could always try to talk them down, but really that didn't like a viable option. They clearly were out for blood.

Short on ideas, he took the first step of attacking in preparation for some retreat. In the dark, his scope gave him some advantage however minor. Before retreating into a dark path, he took aim at the guy whom he tricked into shooting the other and let out a shot with the intent to knock to the ground in pain instead of kill. "You are hitting your own people. All I came here for was information. Why fight when we don't have to? This is what Stronghold wants us to do. Their goals of ridding the city of people like us.", says Diego after firing.

Looking around quickly, he makes a dash for the nearest darkness. If anything, he would have some advantage in the darkness.

Thursdays 31, January 2019; Evening - A Cure for Hitori

Refusing the advice of his monstrous companion Levi presses the button to summon the elevator. A moment later the doors open without any cajoling or protest from the machinery. The aging Jewish doctor steps inside and the doors close between himself and Hitori. Glasses covered eyes on a wrinkles face looking black at the empty voids set into Hitori's skull-face. Then they were separated by metal. Levi presses the button for the lowest floor, floor five, and the elevator begins to descend. There is no stereotypical elevator music. Only silence as Dr. Kripke is carried down.

The descent feels like it is taking longer than it should to cover the distance between four stories. At some point a gentle hiss can be heard and Levi begins to feel light headed. His vision begins to blur, and consciousness gradually begins to slip away from him. Levi can hear Dr. Sokolov's voice, that Kansas accent, speaking. The words heard before his vision does dark and sleep claims him.

"You were instructed to remain on the first floor. I made that clear. Your intrusion was expected, of course, but it is no less disrespectful. Have I not been a gracious host?"

Once Levi entered the elevator, he gave up any pretense of control. Levi is going to be exposed to the knock-out gas until he passes out, so asking you to make saves would be pointless. There are going to be a number of things that happen during this scene that are either going to be too high of a check for Dr. Kripke to resist or that Dr. Sokolov could just do again until he gets the desired result.

I know that having that control, or ability to fight back, taken away from your character sucks. I am going to give Levi 1 HP for playing true to your character and willingly undertaking a significant Complication on yourself. Unless I ask for a check, this scene will be played out entirely narratively.

Diego snaps off a shot and the bullet impacts with one of his antagonist's in the thigh. There is brief plume of red as blood erupts from a penetrated artery. A cry goes of pain goes out from the man and he falls to the ground slapping a hand over the wound in an effort to apply pressure and keep from bleeding out. The response to Diego's effort to try and dissuade the attackers is met with a discordant series of yells from the group. Perhaps they made sense, individually, but taken together they blend into one another making no sense. Though one of their's has fallen, the group is not dissuaded, and presses their attack. Gunshots punctuate the darkness and blade flash at Diego, one of them eventually biting into his armor.

If you would like Diego to try to escape the ambush, rather than go round for round shooting back, there are a couple approaches you could take. One being to run, and rely on Athletics. Another being to create some kind of distraction, such as the classic smoke grenade, that would allow Diego to then Stealth his way out. I am open to other ideas as well. Diego can't talk his way out of this though.

Diego hits on his attack and the Ambusher fails his Toughness check. They get taken down. Diego is using a lethal weapon, though trying not to kill. This person is going to die soon if they do not receive medical attention. But they are not, at this moment, dead.

Of the five active Ambushers, the two ranged ones Aid the melee combatants. One of the melee Ambushers manages to hit Diego. DC 19 Tough.

"We get there, set up the spikes on the tarmac here, just after a turn. Hopefully the driver won't react in time, which will immobilize the vehicle. They will disembark from the vehicle in a standard disembarkation formation, but they will be briefly exposed. We are here and here." Alex began. She gestured to two points, each different side of the road.
"We have a good field of fire and can supress the stronghold as they get out. Once the initial guards are taken care of, we grab the objective in the back of the van and we extract. We will have the vehicle parked nearby in a side road. If extraction of the VIP is impossible, we terminate the VIP to prevent recapture. Needless to say, lets avoid a stand up firefight, reinforcements will be en route. Once we get there, use callsigns. Also, if you have something to cover you face, use that as well" Alex suggests to Sanders.

At Peter's suggestion the two men exit the room and take seats near one another to listen to the speech being given by a man who Peter is now able to identify as Gideon. You catch the tail end of his recounting the events of his discovering the physical remains of Imperator … which amounted to a single finger clad in the ceremonial armor (ceremonial, because it was more aesthetic than used as protection) that Imperator wore into battle. Gideon appears to have received a vision upon coming into physical contact with the finger, and the vision brought him to Hadron City for the first time.

The rest of the sermon is filled with Imperator-centric philosophizing wrapped in the rhetoric and ceremony of a budding religion. At the ends of the sermon Gideon asks that those assembled turn to a west facing corner in the room, the direction of the Arizona desert where Imperator and Dr. Impossible battle ended in an explosion, bow in respectful remembrance to the 'Holy Martyr' as he delivers a closing prayer. The prayer is part eulogy, mnemonic device to help assimilation of the sermon, and yet uplifting with a hope for the future.

When Alexandria takes her knife out and starts using it as a pointer to indicate things on the screen of Sander's smartphone, the Corporal furrows her brow at the muscly woman.

"... don't scratch my phone's screen with that."

Beyond that, Sander pays attention to Alex as she describes her plan for the ambush and extraction. She remains quiet for a little while after the Sergeants asks if there are any questions or suggestions, appearing to think on the matter before voicing anything. It does not take too long for her to pose a question though.

"What do we do if the vehicle ends up being armored and they decide to stay inside of it until reinforcements arrive? We'd need a way to either coax them out or get past that armor."

Levi dreams vividly. In his dream he sees amazingly articulate machines. He sees these machines manipulating a human body. Then they begin doing horrible, painful, unmentionable things to the body. Just before he wakes he sees the face of the person and realize that it was Levi himself that the machines were torturing. When he wakes, it is to pain. As though he had woken in the middle of his own surgery without any aesthetic to subdue the pain.

Dr. Kripke finds himself in a pristine white room with a mirrored ceiling overhead. Standing over him is the form of Dr. Sokolov in shineless silver surgical garb with gloves and half mask. He still weapons his mirrored horn rimmed glasses. Levi is strapped to a table, and from this table sprout a number of thin mechanical arms with a variety of surgical tools sprouting from their ends in place of hands or fingers. The room is well lit. Bright. It makes his head hurt. But pas Sokolov, past the machine arms, he sees the mirrored ceiling, and he seems himself reflected back. The top of his head has been cut open, Exposing his brain.

"You are awake. Good. I want this to be your last memory."

Levi's body trembles from the agony of non-sedated surgery. It is unlike anything he has ever experienced. He tries to speak but the pain makes it almost impossible to think let alone speak sentences.

                                "No...please..." Levi weakly mutters.

"Not...brain...not mind...agghhh!...take anything...else...agghhh!!!" He manages to pant out these last words. The fear and suffering of the moment make it impossible to think of anything else other than immediate relief: Hitori, The Cause, even his own family are forgotten.

Lapsing into despair he can only wimper and sob.
