  • [3e IC] Freedom League 2020

    The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is the Freedom League’s main headquarters, a self-contained satellite in high Earth orbit, accessible by either spaceplane or dedicated “teleportals” on Earth. This provides the Lighthouse with considerable security in addition to making it Earth’s first line of defense against any danger from outer space.

The Lighthouse was designed by Daedalus, based on designs the Star Knights use for their deep space and orbital facilities, and supplemented with alien technologies Daedalus studied during his years in space. The Freedom League funded and built it using their resources (including the personal fortunes of Daedalus, Raven, and Bowman). The League applied for and received permission from the United Nations and UNISON to operate the Lighthouse in Earth orbit, although the approval of the world’s nations was by no means unanimous.

The cylindrical satellite has several decks, including a hangar deck for the Pegasus spaceplanes, an observation deck (with a spectacular view of Earth), dormitories for League members staying on board, a mess hall, gymnasium, laboratories, and an infirmary. The main control center includes monitoring facilities keeping watch over the Earth. The Lighthouse has a fusion power core supplemented by solar collectors on its exterior surface. Its systems are maintained by a sophisticated computer mainframe, containing the Freedom League’s extensive case files. The command deck has a teleportal, able to instantly transport passengers to any other portal on Earth. The League has teleportals in the world capitols and major cities. The Freedom City teleportal is located in Freedom Hall, which is used as the League’s local “embassy” and outpost in the city.

Whatever you were doing, wheather in the lighthouse, at freedom hall or pursuing your own investigations, you are interrupted by the automated monitoring system via your comm-link.

"ATTENTION ALL ACTIVE LEAGUE MEMBERS. REPORT TO FREEDOM HALL. DISASTER IMMINENT. " the message repeats every 20 seconds.

Ling was in the Lighthouse gym running through kata. It was weird not to see space that often. The Legion did a deep space crisis response three times a week, but here and now there wasn't even a handful of ways to get into orbit. She was wearing florescent yoga pants, pink leg warmers and a pair of loose tank tops, one orange, one brown, each with one strap off the shoulder. She paused in mid-side kick as the alarm went off. "Trouble!" she exclaimed, pressing the smooth white bracelet on her left wrist. There was a flash and she stood, still in that pose, with her battle suit on. Then she dashed out into the hall, appearing at a couple of places as she time jumped her way to the command deck and its teleportal.

"So cute" she paused to say, rubbing the quaint floor pad before zapping herself down to Freedom Hall.

      Captain Atlas!
      Condition: To the Rescue!
      HP: 1

John was taking a quick 15-minute break atop a skyscraper after a busy morning of feeding chickens and shearing sheep, followed by an equally busy afternoon of foiling a bank robbery and helping to rescue people from a pretty nasty pile-up (while also reminding them of the importance of wearing a seatbelt and keeping your eyes on the road, of course). He laughs quietly to himself as he observes the bustling streets below him, remembering how he used to suffer badly from vertigo as a child, and that was back when the tallest thing he'd ever climbed was a particularly high wall! He can't help but wonder how his child self would react to this.

John grimaces as the automated warning begins to blare. "Well, no rest for the wicked I suppose." He stands up, takes a few seconds to fix and adjust his cape, and then casually hops off of the edge. He allows himself to fall for a few seconds in order to pick up some speed before he begins to soar over the buildings of Freedom City, giving a few friendly waves to onlookers below.

      It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a flying-ninety-year-old!

He arrives at the Freedom Hall a couple of minutes later, almost tripping over himself as he lands. Seeing that Doc Quantum has already arrived, John smiles and nods to her. "Good to see you, Doctor."

        Neutron:

Lloyd was flying a mile above Liberty Park and heading toward the Hall, taking off from the ground amid a small crowd of tourists and residents after making a appearance for a charity drive at the Champions restaurant and the adjoining Super Museum. The food was fantastic as ever though he patiently turned down the restaurant owner's offer to create a "Neutronic Sandwich" in his honor. No doubt his agent Corrina would have loved the opportunity for some free PR but Lloyd preferred to just eat a hoagie in peace.

As he soared through the air, enjoying the cool breeze, he heard the message via the comm link built-in the collar of his costume. He sighed as he had really looked forward to getting some rest.

Within minutes Neutron arrived at Freedom Hall.

"What's the situation?" he asked those already assembled.

          Impervium
          Condition: Normal.
          HP's: 1 Luck: 2

Sneakers chirp on the hardwood, players call out plays, coaches shout out directions, whistles shriek, and all of it is drowned by back-and-forth waves of fan noise from the crowds lining the stands in FDR's gymnasium. Jason's thoughts filter through the action, a stream of consciousness as he tries to anticipate the actions of his team and their rivals. Rebound Escobar to Morris, four-on-two break, to Federoff for three, no good, to him, Oats moves to block and as he does a moment of panic washes over Jason. If Oats threw his block into Jason, and he didn't roll with it Oats would shatter his arm. He pivoted on his front leg, swinging his rear behind him, he set, Oats made the block, stripping the ball. A whistle, a bench, and his coach yelling at him about letting such a clumsy shot leading to a game winning interception.

After he calmed down he checked his bag, his pager, yes, a pager it was easier than wearing an earbud on the court, was going off. Priority alert. Shit. He shouldered his bag and stalked through the locker room, Federoff stopped him, "Hey J-man, what's up? Coach is pissed, but whatever he'll get over it. Where you headed?" Jason just shook his head, "Gotta bail, family shit, sorry man." As he exited the room he looked at his friend over his shoulder, "I got a shift at Madden's tonight, stop by." He knew Micha loved Madden's burgers, and a free meal, or at least a cheap one would help smooth the loss over.

Thankfully he kept the blue & gold spandex under the bottom of his duffel, especially considering he was still in his b-ball shorts & jersey. He found a spot behind the dumpster, out by teacher's parking, and since most of them were in class still and after a cursory glance he leapt to the roof of the gymnasium. Crouched behind an a/c unit he quickly changed, and shouldering his bag flew towards Freedom Hall.

Imminent Disaster? That was terrifying and as he ran through the list of potential scenarios which could put the League on high alert he almost overshot the Plaza, coming in low and fast, he quickly scrabbled to land having to exert his full strength so as not to plow into the building itself, instead sinking up to his calves in the marble and steel slabs that surrounded the central fountain. He looked up abashedly as Neutron hovered inches off the ground, Quantum was already there as well.

"Uhhh, reporting for duty," he looked to Atlas, "sir?"

              Maverick (Joshua Crowe)
              1 :HP ο COND: Healthy

"Drill or not, the alert said 'disaster' so we should put on our game faces." Jeeze, where did he come from? Was here there the whole time before Doc Quantum arrived, did he arrive stealthily at some point slipping in with someone else? Who knows, he was just sort of 'there' without any indication of when or how he arrived, though by now, the others should be used to him seeming to appear and vanish nearly at will, despite insisting he has no power of invisibility or teleportation.

At the time of the call going out to active Freedom League members: Joshua happened to be in Midtown when his communicator sent a text message to his phone to indicate the message in a subtle way. Apologizing to his date, Joshua excuses himself for a personal emergency and pays for their lunch and departs. Being only a few blocks away from Freedom Hall, Joshua hails down a cab to take him to City Hall, pays the driver then inconspicuously redirects himself across the street to Freedom Hall, ducking out of sight using his unique talents to make his way inside unseen to where he can change into his costume from his pack. Seeing Captain Atlas landing, perhaps lacking a little grace, the subterfuge specialist slips in alongside the living legend, unseen, unheard and so he bided his time until more teammates showed up.

Back in the present: "Just missing Mantis at this point?"

He winces slightly as he gets a good look at the damage the kid's landing caused, but gives him a reassuring pat on the back.

John's smile drops into an unreadable expression for a second or two before he manages to smoothly convert it into a bemused frown. "What a...strange joke, Doctor," he replies, followed by a slightly-off laugh, "Must be something from the 26th century, eh?"

Maverick smirks lightly behind his mask, though it's hard to tell when said mask covers from his hairline down. "Some, but you don't strike me as the weak heart type, Captain." He casually glanced at the rest of the team, wondering what kind of disaster the announcement was about that news hasn't already spread about.

Neutron had been in the superhero business long enough to not react to Maverick's sudden Houdini act. It would have better saved for the intimidation of the city's criminal element but then who was he to dictate how his fellow Freedom Leaguers should use their powers?

He was not entirely sure what to make some of the others though. Johnny Rocket and Centuria were okay though Neutron always felt a little uneasy with Doc Metropolis which was ironic as both of them were practically about the only ones who basically spend most of their time in Freedom Hall when not on missions or on patrol.

Captain Atlas, Neutron felt was a man out of his time despite his good nature. A time of history he always felt uncomfortable as a African American whose grandfather fought in Europe during World War 2 and came back a paraplegic, forgotten and scorned by the general populace. The same applied to Quantum whom he knew next to nothing about her and what he did know he wasn't sure he could believe.

He had no problem with Impervium as time and experience will temper him to be a great hero and Mantis...

A potential powderkeg; even Maverick was more personable but Neutron admitted that he was wrong before and adopted a "wait and see" approach.

"We will fill Mantis asap." He said evenly as he started his way toward Level Two, the second floor where the main monitor center was located.

He pauses to consider. "Captain, you, Neutron and Impervium should get out there pronto, see if you can identify it, or convince it to stop. Doctor Quantum and I will head to the harbor and be on standby, we can't do much without the ability to fly ourselves at that kind of speed and it would probably be best if two of you don't have your hands full with passengers. Doctor, can you get the both of us to the harbor?"

"On it." Neutron said in grim determination after looking at the screen. "You can use the Sky-Bikes if any are available though i must admit that Quantum's abilties might be faster. I am also assuming that the authorities are already alerted and have first responders ready to aid any civilians in case this thing does crashes."

Neutron hovered several feet above the floor and then flew out of the building, thankfully the Hall's automated systems allowed the nearest exits to quickly open for any member about to leave by using their powers such as flight otherwise it would be concussion city every time someone had to leave.

The press would love that and have a field day if that did really happened and they've gotten a hold of it.

Neutron did not know if he can manage to maintain the airspeed needed to intercept whatever that thing was in time. He mentally activated his force field and felt reassured as the glowing white energy surrounded his body.

John inhales sharply as he examines the image of the creature. He'd dealt with a few giant creatures and robots before, but none on this scale. He doesn't even want to imagine the death toll if it even just walked through Freedom City, nevermind if it's here to rampage and destroy.

John flies after Neutron, catching up to him in a short time. "If it's alright with the two of you, I'd like to take the first shot at talking to this creature," he suggests to Neutron and Impervium, "We have no idea if this creature is sapient or if it's simply an animal, but I do have a lot of experience with calming animals down. Granted, none of those animals has been hundreds of feet tall, but it's better than nothing. Thoughts?"
