  • [3e IC] In the Shadow of Imperator: Interlude

The Hadron City of Imperator's regime was like another world. The sky rail system that weaves between towering buildings once hummed with activity as people were rapidly transported around the city. Now large stretches of it are wrecked. Buildings that used to always seem pristine are pockmarked with structural damage, and the sculpted gardens and farms that grew off of them are now dried up or dying. Private vehicles had been confiscated, instead there was a stable free use public transport system that used electric powered vehicles on the ground in addition to the rapid transit of the sky rail. Now the streets are clogged by traffic and the foul fumes spouted by vehicles running on fossil fuels. Homelessness and transient populations are now pervasive as the archaic job market struggled to adjust to a population of ten million souls that have not relied on money and who worked, not to earn a living, but for personal fulfillment and advancement of the community. Stronghold International's presence can be felt throughout the city in checkpoints and armored personnel carriers moving through streets as though the war were on the edge of being reignited.

    Tuesday 22 January 2019
Alonzo, Hitori, and Peter; a couple days ago you were asked by one of Null's agents to assist in securing a smuggling route for equipment being moved into a safe meeting place in a collapsed stretch of subway surrounding a station. The three of you are aware that in the last years of Imperator's reign the city was being expanded downwards, but during the war portions of the under city, like this subway station, have been cut off due to collapses. Once your supplies were moved in a small group helped you set up the power, plumbing, and some security measures then left. Today a woman arrived, set up a rectangular table in the main room with five seats flanking it and one at the head of the tablet, and a computer tablet at each of the flanking seats. Before leaving she informed you that assets from outside the city, a Professor Gonzalez and a Dr. Kripke whose photographs you were given, would be joining you for a meeting with Null. It was requested that at least one of you meet with them and escort them safely to the station.

Levi and Diego, your respective handlers have gotten in touch with you. You have been called to Hadron City itself. A local contact is to meet you at a predetermined location and escort you to a site for you to operate out of in the area. While you have been given advanced warning, more than enough time to settle personal affairs and make any reasonable arrangements that you might need to, it is implied to be important that you be there and be there timely. Null wants to speak with you and your local associates in person. There is a sense that change is in the air.

    Hitori Zanzo

It was terrible to live your life in a post-utopia. Every thing you looked at was changed for the worst. Destroyed, desecrated, corrupted. Oftentimes Hitori had to close his eyes to things and push forward, not thinking about it.
But the human mind is something incredible. He had somewhat gone from the organized and well maintained Tokyo to america, where things were.... disastrous in comparison, so he had gone through something alike in the past, albeit on a smaller scale. Almost as if copy-pasting his reactions from those years, Hitori reverted to mumbling in japanese and rubbing the bridge of his nose when something made him angry, a habit he had lost after some time in Hadron city, even when it wasnt yet the utopia it came to be.
Anyways, things today seemed shine a little brighter, he hadnt drunk sake since Null contacted him, which made the headaches also less unbearable, it might also be that. Regardless of what was making him feel positive, the prospects of a reborn dream or soberness, today he walked straight again, hands on his back, black formal yukata flapping on the windy Tuesday. He had taken upon himself to safely escort the arrivals from outside.

Re: In the Shadow of Imperator: From the Ashes Rise

      Dr. Levi Kripke
      HP:1
      Cnd: Normal

It is an exciting and frightening time.

Levi peered out of the tinted window from the passengers side of the Honda Accord. His driver had been sent for him on orders of Null. Kripke didn't know the man's name, nor did it matter. The elder doctor spent most of his time going over the names of contacts he had made on his various speaking tours of U.S. Universities across America. Some of the crowds had been hostile, and increasingly so after Kripke condemned the military subjugation of Hadron City.

Still, he had managed to find sympathizers among the student-body of many institutions of higher learning. More than that, he had actually managed to convince a few academics of the righteousness of the Imperator's cause. Levi found comfort in these "victories".

Oh, but there are always costs. His family: a wife and three little girls were seldom seen anymore. They are casualties in a war that must be fought. Hannah, his wife, understood and even supported Levi passionately. Both were nominally Reformed Jews who believed strongly in "social justice" and fighting the oppression and ignorance of humankind. Levi, however, had fully put such religious thoughts aside over a decade ago. Sure, he believed in "Reason" and mankind's ability to attain it. But it was mankind alone that must ascend the infinite mountain of enlightenment. That was Kripke's purpose in life now...to carry mankind on his back towards progress until the day he stopped drawing breath.

The car had been driving for what seemed to be days since he left New York. Occasionally, he would stop at a pre-arranged location in the middle of nowhere for a restroom break. Then it was back in the car for many more unbearable hours. Meals were eaten inside the vehicle and the tinted windows remained up at all times. Cell phones were turned off and no communication was allowed lest he be traced via cell-phone tower.

With Levi half-asleep, the unremarkable car finally pulled over into some gravel. It was dark outside and the loud chirping of crickets could be heard in what appeared to be a rural area.

Here is where you get out doctor." The driver's stoic voice had only been heard a handful of times over the course of the whole trip, "Someone will be along shortly to get you. There's a large, empty wheat silo right here beside the gravel shoulder. You're to wait behind it until your contact comes. This road doesn't have a lot of traffic on it, so you should be fine. Your contact will stop here and look for you, understand?"

"Thank you." Levi says with a nod. He steps away and shuts the door. So, I'm in Kansas now.

He retrieves his luggage from the back of the car, and shuts the trunk. The car u-turns onto the road and drives back in the direction from which it came.

As he walks around the surprisingly large silo, he is amazed at how bright the cloudless night is out on the prairie. Under the bright mid-western sky, Levi stands quietly alone looking up at the stars. You'd never see this in New York...way too much light pollution.

OOC: Ok, I took some liberties. I assume I'm somewhere in Kansas. Let me know if I need to revise anything about my post.

        Peter Ezima
        HP: 1

Peter was performing checks on their new base, especially of the security systems. It was an imperative practice these days when he was a fugitive, constantly hunted by Stronghold. Private military contractors. As if there wasn't a greater sign of the ultimate hypocrisy of the 'liberators.' Couldn't take responsibility for their own actions, no. Had to send in paid mercenaries, as if they could distance themselves from the tearing down of a truly great city.

Imperator a dictator? Better than a democracy where people went homeless and hungry. He remembered his father's tales of how there was enough to put food and the other essentials on the table, but barely, stretched thin in his youth. Nothing like that when Imperator led Hadron City.

The people would flock to their side given time. Null knew that of course. Peter knew that. And some outside knew that. This professor and the doctor. And this time, the world would see the truth, and not hide behind the excuse of a force field as oppression.

Re: In the Shadow of Imperator: From the Ashes Rise

          Alonzo the Amazing
          HP: 1
Status: Tired, but trying not to show it

Alonzo leaned against the wall in his tuxedo outfit, cape hanging down his back, glowering at the room. Outwardly, he portrayed his usual air of effortless menace, but inwardly, he was struggling to stay awake. Without the support structure he'd always enjoyed under Imperator, he was spending most of his waking hours keeping ahead of the petty gangs in the area, sabotaging the National Guard's supply lines, making occasional terrifying appearances to reinforce the idea that Imperator wouldn't be gone for long. He was running ragged. It wasn't just the encounters themselves, but the hours of preparation that were required to scout out a location, to plan an angle of attack, to set up the area in advance, all for less than a minute of actual menace. If he hadn't spent so many years learning to do all-nighters at the University while studying...

He cut his train of thought off at the pass, realizing he'd lapsed into a micronap and had missed several seconds of the activity in the room. He scanned the room impassively. He recognized Hitori, who'd been in charge of combat training for the ground forces, who was, as usual, antsy to be up and moving. He wondered who else might be called in, who was left... who had betrayed Imperator and fled... he had to shake away another wave of fatigue. The woman at the table was finishing up her speech. There were two outsiders coming in, ostensibly always having been outside of the shield, although Alonzo wondered how hard it would be to infiltrate moles. These people would bear looking after.

Ah, and she needs someone to fetch them. He pushed himself off of the wall, his cape sliding into place.
"I can do this task," he said, his voice clipped with a faintly European accent that he'd spent many hours refining, "I assume that there will be the usual vehicle outside." He lightly thumped his right fist over his heart. "They will be brought here safely, and along the way, I can... evaluate them."

            Diego Gonzalez
            HP: 1
            CND: Fine

He didn't know what to make of it at first. Was his old handler compromised? If that was the case, they would have brought him in already given the access he had worked so hard to get. Was it a test? Maybe a trap? Three months of radio silence and now out of the blue he gets called back to where it all happened what seemed like ages ago. Because of his service, they had treated him like a hero not knowing it was him who aided the other side for the last 18 years. Something in him couldn't help but think it was all a trap to discredit a war hero and convince the powers that granted him top secret clearance that he was a traitor. It is what he would do. Still, he had to check it out.

Getting out of his daily life was the easy part. Going off the grid, recharging his batteries, coming to terms with life after a brutal war, or some such non sense was all it took. Over the years, he had cultivated a free spirit persona. So, no one questioned him when he said he was going off into the wilderness for a bit. Maggie of course wasn't happy. She had poured two wild months into the relationship and fell head over heels for Diego confessing her love after just a month of dating at a very intimate moment. Diego, of course, returned it convincingly enough. Having a serious girlfriend was a good cover and the benefits didn't hurt either. It took him promising to send a post card every week at least and give her a call when he was in cell phone reception range.

Being in cell phone range would be hard without a cell phone though. True to his word, he went into the Canadian woods than proceeded to toss his phone keeping the sim just in case. Even off, he knew phones could be tracked. With only a few clothes, his weapons, simple gear, some cash, and basic food supplies he made his way in disguise via bus to the closest city he could to Hadron city. He could bike the rest of the way. His handler had given him a few faces to look for since any good spy wouldn't just wait in a spot for someone they weren't expecting. Imperator might demand his loyalty, but a stupid loyalty did nobody any good. Finding a good perch, he hid as far as he could get a shot off with is rifle and still see with his binoculars until one of the possible greeters arrived.

            OOC
Just in case, I made a roll even though he is maximum range out and still able to take a shot. Rolled with another website as coyotecode.net is down and I don't know any other rolling website that tracks rolls.

Re: In the Shadow of Imperator: From the Ashes Rise

Silvia, the woman who had come to make preparations for Null's arrival, was a slim woman with black hair pulled up into a bun and a heart shaped face with one brilliant emerald green eye; the other an empty socket covered by a limp dead eyelid. At the moment of Alonzo's inquiry she was standing near to Peter, discretely looking over his shoulder as he tended to the security system. Almost as though she were silently double checking his work. Alonzo's question, and Hitori's preparedness, pulled her attention to them however. When she spoke her voice carried with a faintly Italian accent.

"It is a different car, but the same alley. The keys are under the driver seat, in a Burger King soft drink cup. Use route B out of the city, by way of the third ward. The Stronghold officers at the checkpoints will be less observant."

… and by that, she likely meant they had been bribed or extorted to create a temporary window for smuggling in of people from outside the city. Following this advice she raised a loosely fisted hand to lightly tap over her heart in a mirror to Alonzo's action. As though in some kind of salute.

"If you come to have any concerns about our allies from outside, you may voice them to Praetor Null when they arrive. Best to be discrete, however."

Unless further discourse were desired Silvia returned to hovering near Peter after speaking with Alonzo about picking up the new arrivals. She observed quietly for a minute before eventually speaking up, and pointing to a video feed on a monitor.

"You could increase the sensitivity of the motions sensors in the south hall. Nothing larger than a rat should be moving around in that area."

Alonzo and Hitori may have been able to hear another couple of such helpful comments before they finally left the station. As Silvia said an unoccupied car was waiting on the surface in the usual alley a block away from the hidden entrance to the undercity that lead to their new base. The drive was slow, with traffic made worse by the implementation of Stronghold checkpoints stopping people every so often for random inspections. Alonzo and Hitori would not have to worry about any such check, as long as they took the route outline b Silvia. In time the lights of the city would become distant specks behind them on the open road leading to a silo where Dr. Kripke waited for their arrival and Diego spied on the scene from a safe distance.

Anyone wishing to try to notice Diego may make a Perception check.

Diego can have a +5 to his Stealth due to the poor lighting and being at max range. But his Perception roll to detect anyone making a Stealth check is -2 due to the poor lighting. His binoculars allow him to counter distance penalties.

Everyone else, assuming no special action is taken, gets +2 to Stealth and -2 to Perception unless they have a way to deal with the poor lighting.

                Hitori Zanzo

The stoic Hitori kept mostly to himself, but not to be point of being impolite. He valued politeness greatly, and so answered every and any cheap talk attempt with interest, but did not take the initiative in talking. He recalls Alonzo, not personally but through third parties. He has heard of his exploits and his supposedly "dark magic" tricks. Perhaps he was truly one of the few gifted that was probably soon to develop further into his powers, perhaps it was all just trickery. Not unlike the one employed by ninjas and shinobi. Not Hitori's thing. He was more Bushido, conduct, code, honour. But each to their own, Hitori thought, mentally shrugging at the idea of asking Alonzo personally.
These mild distractions, however, didn't kept him from actively scanning the surroundings of the drive. Not that there was much to see, Stronghold enacting as clumsy corrupt dictators, what they claim to have freed the city from.
As the car leaves the city behind Hitori relaxes a bit until the silo comes into sight. "Be on your guard. I will retrieve the targets, you stay in the car." he comments, the first time he says something before being asked before. Following that he steps out and takes in the surroundings, before moving towards the doctor.

How long have I been here?

Levi gazed at an old mechanical wrist watch given to him by his children many years ago as a birthday present. Unfortunately, it had no "light" button. Though the sky was clear, the lack of a moon still made it difficult for an aging man with glasses to see.

Damn...a lot of good this thing is doing me. In the dark, he couldn't tell the minute hand from the hour and so just gave up.

Alone at night and in the middle of nowhere, the doctor grew paranoid.

Have I been brought here to be murdered? I certainly have enough enemies. Levi Kripke born to be assassinated in a wheat field in Kansas.

Then his reason got the better of him. Nah...if this was a hit, I'd be dead already.

Suddenly a pair of headlights in the distance. Levi kept himself carefully on the opposite side of the silo. As the vehicle neared, he could tell it was slowing. His heart began to race...part fear...part anticipation. Finally it pulled onto the gravel shoulder and stopped.

He could hear a car door gently close, then footsteps on the gravel shoulder of the road. Levi stood with both hands raised as if he were under arrest. On one side sat his briefcase, on the other his suitcase. When the person rounded the silo, Levi could not make out who he was in the starlight.

"Hello..." Levi said timidly, "...are you here to escort me?"

As more approached the site, it started looking less and less like a possible trap. The greeter certainly didn't look like an agent. Sometimes, he just had to take a chance and this time it was on his handler not being comprised. He didn't like it though. Too many unknowns.

Packing up his rifle and binoculars while keeping his knife in the holster attached to his belt, he got ready to make some introductions. If friend, showing up in a black burglar like getup down the black cap might not inspire much confidence. Such was the trade off. Zipping his duffle bag back up, he makes his way to the silo without any pretense or hesitation. If it did turn out to be a trap, he was resigned to it, but wasn't going to go down easy.

Emerging into clear view, he waves with his free hand. "I take it you were sent to pick us up? I would love to make introductions, but maybe some place less open. Never know who might be watching. Besides, staying in the open like this too long is not good for anyone around here.", inquires Diego with a thick Spanish accent. While waiting for a response, he looked over Hitori and the self appointed spokeperson for Imperator.

As the doctor comes from around the silo, he sees a silhouette framed against the lights of the car. Square shoulders, slightly short, tightly built, hands on his back. Whoever this is, discipline seems to radiate from him. He seems to be wearing some sort of robe, as the legs are not outlined, instead, concealed by the flapping clothing. The figure moves closer to Levi, and the contrast from the car lights grows dim enough to reveal the features of an asian man. His hair and thin beard strictly and neatly trimmed. "Indeed" he says, bowing slightly."Follow me to the car kudasai" he adds, taking one hand from his back and gesturing to the car. Now that his garment is visible Levi can see he is wearing a traditional black yukata. As Hitori raises his head from the bow, he notices Diego approaching. In a blink his hand moves into his robes in what seems like a defensive reaction. He narrows his eyes and scans the newcomer. "You must be our second guest. Indeed let us not linger here long." he adds, leaving his hand in his yukata
He leads the way to the vehicle and opening the passenger seat for Levi. He then walks to the back passenger seats and offers an open door for Diego, before taking the other back seat himself.

Diego took his seat next to the what he could best gather was one of the more rigid of Imperators followers. It was tough to imagine a city full of his sort back in the glory days. Duffle bag on his lap and hand still close to his knife, he looks around the car. Not to flashy, so good for getting around. It looked reliable, so no need to draw attention to oneself when it breaks down often. Most interesting enough was a driver who didn't come out to greet them.

"I take it we are either going back into the city through some means or going to a base outside of it. If I had to guess, one of the guard posts was bribed or threatened in some way. Can't imagine them letting us in any other way. Especially not with someone who sticks out so much in the car and an outspoken advocate of Imperator.", says Diego. Not knowing made him uneasy. he had stayed alive by knowing and now he was in a car going who knows where with who knows who.

"It is not clear who is the one sticking out in the car." Replies the Japanese man, with a short lived smile.
"I assume you are Gonzales-san, given your age. And the gentleman in the front must be Hakushigō Kripke-san." He says, bowing each time he mentions your name. While seated! Politeness is an art the people of the rising Sun have developed beyond any reasonable limit.
"My name is Sanzo Hitori." He bowed yet again. Probably Diego was aware that Hitori avoided answering his question about bring Stronghold agents. Let's see if he asks again.
Hitori was about to introduce Alonzo, but decided against it. Who knew what was the trickster thinking? Perhaps he was cursing Hitori for revealing information, but the sword master hazarded that if these were spies, their reaction to the new information should have been evident to Alonzo. If not, well, there were other methods to extract the truth.

                              Alonzo the Amazing
                              HP: 1
Status: Tired, but trying not to show it

Within the car, Alonzo kept pinching himself under his cape to ensure he stayed awake. Sitting still wasn't working well for him. He slid a knife out of his sleeve and began making it dance between his fingers as he watched Hitori meet the two others.
I don't know that I like this situation still... but if Null trusts in them, then I must too.

When the two come in, he makes the knife disappear again, but waits until he's sure they've seen it first.
"Good evening," he said, his voice devoid of emotion, "I assure you that those who are loyal have nothing to fear. Even seemingly absent, Imperator's grip is felt." Underlying his words was an implication that those who were not loyal had much more to fear.

"Even now, he has made arrangements to bring his followers home safely." He glanced at the two men, then at Hitori. It seemed his introductions were his own. He reached out a white-gloved hand, first to Diego and then to Dr. Levi. "Alonzo. There was a time when I added an 'Amazing' to that name, but that was in better times. For now, Alonzo will do." He let his imposing facade stand for a few more second before he slumped back a bit in the seat. "Truth be told, I am glad to see more allies. Imperator was an impressive figure, all the more for keeping things running so smoothly. We are beset on all sides, an enclave surrounded by enemies. I am hoping Null has very good news for us." Part of him railed at showing such weakness, but one could only stand strong and alone for so long...
