Kasimir Flaegler
    HP 3

Kasimir landed, then waited for Otso to do the same before he released the hold on his "flight field". The ability to grant flight to others was incredibly useful, as his exercises with the Volunteers had shown, but it was also a bit nerve wracking. Kas gave up all his offensive capability using that power and that was occasionally disconcerting. He was certain they'd escaped any ground based radar, given the last 100 or so miles had been traversed at extremely low altitude.

    Thankful that his uniform protected him from the heat of the sun, he turned to his companions and asked;

    "What's our next move?"

      The Blue Knight

Gwyn shrugged, just listening for a moment. The sounds of Uganda were markedly different from Austria, or London, or Wales.

"Short of finding Roger Bacon curing the sick in the next ten minutes, we look for anyone what speaks The Queen's Own and see if they can point us in the right direction, ya? Official language of Uganda, one of two, innit?"

The glorious Union Jack, flying across continent after continent in the old days. English was the third-most widely spoken language in the world-and it wasn't cause of Jack's folk.

"Mira." Martin greeted coolly. He was capable of being professional toward her, prefect to prefect, but he couldn't let himself forget it was her reckless actions that instigated their exile here. Still, he was able to deal business-like with her, which actually wasn't much different than how he'd acted at the Vienna school. Never one for warm and fuzzy interactions.

"Peter puts out a field of energy in a radius, but can only partially-control it's effects. We're seeing what it's capable of in order to develop more refined control. You are welcome to observe and offer advice." Martin says as he retreives the affected cup. He examines it, even on a molecular level to see what kind of damage it has sustained. Was it melted or frozen? Contact burned as if from electricity? Suffered molecular manipulation of any kind? Or was it just the victim of kinetic collision?

"Excellent zat you can affect zese objects. Eventually we can get sensors to measure ze force output of your field. Getting a range and radius should be simple enough. I will stagger cups around you and see which ones are affected.... ... Okay, now try to affect blue cups, in zis room 50 feet or more away from you."

He'll adjust cups further or nearer as needed until he gets a good idea of the range and area.

"Okay, now let's see what we can do in zat area. Try to affect green cups only on ze left side of your body...."

"Okay, imagine a clock on ze floor zat you are in ze center of. 12 is right in front of you. Affect ze cups only in ze 8'o'clock position."

If it succeeds or fails, Martin tries to be encouraging.

"Okay, relative positions zen. Try to affect only ze 3 closest blue cups to you.... Now ze closest cup to this marker I will toss into your area."

"Now let us practice wiz states of being. I will create Xenon, a 'eavy, inert gas, not commonly found in ze atmosphere. I will zen stand beyond ze edge of your field and 'ave you try to repel Xenon. I'll detect for ze movement of ze specific Xenon particles rushing past me."

        Martin does so.

"Now let's try a liquid. It's a bit warm so Gallium should work nicely. It's less toxic zan Mercury by a great deal and not naturally occuring. Let's see what your power does wiz liquid Gallium."

Martin creates an amount of the liquid metal for them to test with.

        Afterwards:

"Okay, we've played wiz ze area, and states of matter. Let's see 'ow intelligent your power is. I will write ze number 1 through 20 on various cups around you...... Zere, now, affect only ze cups zat I 'ave drawn a 1 on. Remember to zink of it zat way exactly, 'cups zat Martin 'ave drawn a single number 1 on zem'. Ozerwize you could effect everyzing 10 through 19 accidentally. Okay, try."

Martin replaces cups as needed. when/if it's established that he can affect only cups with a certain number on them, Martin gets more creative.

"Okay, now affect ze cups corresponding to 2 times 3." [6]

"Okay, now ze cups corresponding to ze number of markers zat I 'ave in my pockets." [3]

"Okay, now corresponding to ze number zat is square root of 289." [17]

"Okay, now ze number corresponding to ze DAY zat I first attended ze Vindicator's European Academy." [8, from Sept 8th, 2008]

"Now... ze cups corresponding wiz ze number of fingers zat I am intending to 'old up in a few seconds." [5]

Martin let's Peter catch his breath if needed.

Lex snorts when Gaspar asks if they can change, "I'm for any excuse to lose the cult uniforms!"

A few minutes later he'd tossed his uniform into a pile on the bed, and was pulling on a beat up t-shirt, torn jeans, as well as a recently repaired (with blood stains removed) leather bomber jacket. The way things were going he was going to owe Martin a lot of favors.

Worth it, he thought as he dashed out of the school.

He frowned at the crowd. Obstacles quickly became one of his most disliked features shortly after gaining to the ability to run faster than most cars.

He was willing to admit that a part of it might just be bitterness at the new location.

"Wait, did you just say they had a statue of a dog?" Lex asked, his attention turned back to Gaspar, "Seriously?"

NVAE: MODERN WESTERN CIVILIZATION (Violet; NPCs: Doug, Finn, Herta, Kelly, Lexus, Mike, Mouloud, Rose, Sarah)
The corners of Rose's lips turned up as she watched Violet sink into her seat. She savored every moment of the girl's abject humiliation.

A moment later, Ashworth slipped back into the room. "All right, everyone. Take your seats, please."

Kelly giggled as she sat down, only to look back at Violet and smirk.

Third period went smoother. Jack, she learned, was away, making P.E. just Adam, Jason, and her. It was a run day and Violet spent the entire time on a treadmill, alone with her thoughts.

It was a brief respite before she had to face Rose again. Walking into Fitzroy's Geography class, Violet found Herta already in her seat. It was another class missing students: for the last week, Elle, Lex, and Anne's seats had been vacant. Not long after Violet arrived, Rose and Kelly entered the room and started to giggle at the sight of Violet. Finn arrived moments after the bell, keeping his head down to avoid meeting anyone's gaze.

There was another brief respite for lunch. Lena joined Rose and Kelly. Since Eve's departure, Violet's remaining friends were Sarah, Kirstie, and Tatjana. With Kirstie's powers out of control and Tatjana's burgeoning depression, it wasn't often that she saw either of them around the school; still, it was unlike Sarah to be so absent.

After lunch, Violet returned to Fitzroy's classroom--this time for Earth Sciences. Herta was already there, pitching the remains of her lunch into the waste bin by the teacher's desk. Randy was the next one in, followed by Larrikin, Steven, and Finn. Again, Rose and Kelly walked in, smirking at the sight of Violet.

Finally, Violet had Contemporary World Issues with Ashworth--a class graciously devoid of Rose Caspian or any of her friends. Instead, a dazed Juozas, a morose Dag, and a depressed Ellen joined Buddy, Jason, Armande, Matt--the cute one, not the smelly one--and Gus, the Egyptian boy who could turn into a crocodile man.

The class mostly tackled the stories in the news. Today's top story was about a missing plane--a flight had vanished in the skies over the Netherlands early this morning. It was a story that seemed to overshadow all others: Geert van Rijn was traveling to Germany, to speak at Heidelberg University on the subject of Neo-Sapien Affairs; Nanette Montauban's brother, his wife, and two daughters had been killed by their own police guard; delegates from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea were en route to Vienna, to meet with the International Atomic Energy Agency; multinational petroleum titan London Energy suffered an attack from a Neo-Sapien terrorist, as video showed a winged silhouette landing at an oil refinery in South Killingholme, North Lincolnshire minutes before explosions rocked the facility, claiming the lives of six workers.

A few minutes before class ended, her phone vibrated with a message from Jakob: Sorry phone was off how r u

The two boys set up several colored cups around the room and then Peter made Martin leave the area. Standing in the middle of the room, Peter looked around to make sure no one was within his area... and then it happened: the cup he was told to affect was shot across the room.

There was no flash of energy that Martin could see. There was no shimmer of light around Peter or cascading power emanating from him. Peter had simply stood in the middle of the room and the cup had shot away from him as though it had been kicked. "Excellent zat you can affect zese objects," Martin said as he retrieved the affected cup. He examined it on a molecular level: it wasn't melted or even singed in any way; it hadn't been frozen. It didn't appear to have suffered any sort of molecular manipulation of any kind. Perhaps Peter's powers were little more than just an explosion of kinetic energy? "Eventually we can get sensors to measure ze force output of your field. Getting a range and radius should be simple enough. I will stagger cups around you and see which ones are affected."

As he set the cups up, Mira stepped up to the entrance. "What's all this, then?" she asked.

"Peter puts out a field of energy in a radius, but can only partially-control it's effects. We're seeing what it's capable of in order to develop more refined control. You are welcome to observe and offer advice."

Mira raised her hands in defeat. "I don't know what help I'd be. I'm more of a..." She trailed off, looking down at her hands.

Once he was finished setting up their targets, Martin moved back, motioning for Mira to follow suit. "Okay, now try to affect blue cups in zis room 50 feet or more away from you."

Again, there was no visible expression that Peter had done anything. Blue cups within forty feet of Peter were flung away. "Okay, now let's see what we can do in zat area. Try to affect green cups only on ze left side of your body..."

The green cups to Peter's left shot away, but so did the ones on his right. "Izvi-s-sorry," Peter said.

"Okay, imagine a clock on ze floor zat you are in ze center of. Twelve is right in front of you. Affect ze cups only in ze eight o'clock position."

Red, green, and blue cups in the eight o'clock position shot away.

"Okay, relative positions zen." As Martin made his way to reset the cups, he noticed a few of the other students stopping by to watch their training. "Try to affect only ze zree closest blue cups to you."

All of the blue cups in Peter's area were hit.

"Now ze closest cup to this marker I will toss into your area."

Only that cup was hit, and Martin understood: it seemed that Peter could not limit his powers to more than one condition.

"Now let us practice wiz states of being..."

Xenon, Gallium--whatever element Martin introduced into the environment, Peter was able to expel it. It stood to reason then that Peter should have been capable of pushing all of the oxygen out of an area. He would never be able to suffocate someone with it, given that his powers appeared to operate in bursts of energy, but in theory, he could save those around him from, say, a toxic miasma.

"Okay, we've played wiz ze area, and states of matter. Let's see 'ow intelligent your power is. I will write ze number one through twenty on various cups around you..." Martin had a hunch Peter would pass this test, too. There had to be a psychic component of the Russian youth's abilities: his father had brought him along to help work a murder case, and asked Peter to only affect murderers. The only way he would have been able to affect the intended target would be if his powers somehow knew information he did not. "Zere, now, affect only ze cups zat I 'ave drawn a one on. Remember to zink of it zat way exactly: 'cups zat Martin 'as drawn a single number one on zem'. Ozerwize you could effect everyzing ten through nineteen accidentally. Okay, try."

Peter closed his eyes, stood perfectly still, and a single cup shot away.

"Okay, now affect ze cups corresponding to 2 times 3."

The cup branded with a six shot away.

Peter continued to pass each test Martin put in front of him: his powers knew how many markers were in his pocket, when he first started at the Vienna school, and how many fingers he planned to hold up.

When he offered Peter a break, the youth went to grab a bottle of water. Outside, a small crowd had grown. One of them, a Japanese girl who looked to be a year younger that Martin, timidly came forward. "Excuse me," she said before bowing. "My name... Ueno Momoko. You... help him control power, yes?"

Yuusuke stepped forward but didn't come into the dojo. "Her name is Momoko," he told Martin. "She's in Year 9. She can't control her powers either."

Yuusuke explained further: "Whenever Momoko makes skin-to-skin contact with another person, she... she sort of controls their mind. She makes them keep the promises they have made. I imagine you told your girlfriend back in Vienna you'd see her again, right? If you touch Momoko, you'll be compelled to go to her right now. You won't be able to do anything else until you make good on your promises."

            "You help me?" she asked.

            TOKYO (Lex; NPCs: Gaspar)
"Wait, did you just say they had a statue of a dog?" Lex asked, his attention turned back to Gaspar. "Seriously?"

"I guess a long time ago, this guy... Okay, so, he used to come home from work via the train here, right? Well, every day, his dog would walk from their home to meet him at the station, and they'd walk home together. One day, the man died. He never came home. His dog waited for him. The next day, the dog went to the train station and waited. He did it again the day after that, and the day after that, and so on until the day the dog also died." Gaspar tried not to cry. "So, yeah... They have a statue of a dog."

Soon, they were standing before the status of Hachikou.
It was a popular meeting spot for most, and always crowded around it. Despite the mass of people here, Gaspar noticed a familiar face: "Hey," he said, nudging Lex, "isn't that Svetlana."

It was impossible to mistake her, given her blue skin.

KIKYUSA (Blue Knight, Greystone, Magnitude, Ursa)
They drew eyes as they made their way towards the village. As they drew closer, Greystone noticed that nearly everyone they saw had a glow around them: for many, their mouth was glowing. Some, it was where their ears or noses had been. Some of the injuries they sported were obvious: many people here had had their lips cut off. A casual glance couldn't explain to the American why so many women had glowing pelvises.

No one dared to approach the New Vindicators.

Otso had breathed more easily after they'd landed at their destination. Teleporting or bouncing around was one thing but being propelled through the air without any visible force keeping him aloft? The feeling was simultaneously both exhilarating and terrifying. Bears were not meant to fly. But still, he knew he had the return back to the school to look forward to, in both senses of the words.

As they neared the village, Otso mused that the place wasn't that different from back home. There was obviously the difference in climate that was making him somewhat uncomfortable and the people naturally looked different but they had their share of country roads and small towns back home as well, once you got out of the cities that themselves paled in comparison to Vienna.

"Excuse me, we're looking for Roger Bacon, the doctor? We need his help."

"Peter, your power is amazing." Martin bent down to retrieve one of the cups and examined it. There was no damage to it--not even a dent where it had been hit. It was almost as though there were some sort of telekinetic component of Peter's powers, in addition to the obvious psychic effect. "Oh, zere are some limits, yes, but wiz some cleverness you can avoid 'urting anyone accidentally. And ze utility! "I cannot control my ability, da, but I can choose not to use it, yes. That girl? Pyotr? They cannot turn their powers off. They cannot live normal lives."

Putting Momoko out of mind for now, Martin and Peter returned to their training. A few minutes more in and it was interrupted by cries of alarm from the spectators. The two Year Tens looked out to see a stream of energy shooting into the air. Martin recognized it immediately as Mira's power signature.
