    VIENNA (Jack; NPCs: Armand, Stefon)
"Hang on," the tattooed American said holding up a hand. "What do you mean Agnes was held hostage? How is she home already?"

"She went into town, yesterday. She saw the news about Magnitude fighting those skeletons, and she was so adamant about getting there to see it. As she was headed there, she got caught up in an earthquake? Some Frenchman held her hostage underground until Magnitude saved her."

ARAD, ROMANIA (Jack; NPCs: Herta, Radu, Vlad, ???)
<<"I came for one of the children,">> the stranger said, watching as Candyman bound his father up in candyfloss. <<"They have powers like mine--blue fire?">>

No sooner had the words left his mouth than three boys came crashing into the room. Two looked a year or two younger than the New Vindicators--they looked to be about 13. One looked closer to 6 or 7. "Vlad? Herta?" one of them asked, obviously surprised by the sight before him. He recovered quickly: "Simon, du-te trezi Ilena sus. Fii rapid despre asta."

"Nu-i așa muta dracului, puștiule!" spat Tantivy.

    "DU-TE!" snapped Iosef.

Simon moved to run, but Tantivy was faster. In the blink of an eye, she was behind the older two boys. The youngest--Simon--had been catapulted out of the room and into the hall by the momentum of Tantivy's blow.

It was a sight that seemed to make the mysterious Nephilim in their midst agitated. <<"He's just a small child!">> Gripping his spectral meat cleaver, he charged at Tantivy. <<"So help me, if you've killed him...">> He swung the weapon down and clearly connected, but Tantivy's reflexes were faster than the older teen's were: in the nick of time she'd crossed her arms to block the blow and quickly deflected the strike aside.

"So much for this &%^# being our side!" Tantivy snapped.

INFIRMARY (Lex; NPCs: Carla and Kirstie)
"So, assumption one: no access to memories. Assumption two: they can control more than one person but it's hard to pull off. They might not actively be able to make more than one person do anything at a time." Lex nodded to himself. "And we have a window of opportunity."

"Assumption three," said Kirstie, "they can do this from a remote location. Assumption four: they can experience what their puppet experiences. We know they're not physically in the room with us, but yet they knew how to interact. Likely, they can see what we see and hear what we hear while we're being controlled."

"Funny part is this sounds... well, it sounds like they were making this up as they went. They grabbed William for access to information, but when they saw the opening to try to kidnap Kirstie they went for it. Hey, Kirstie, think you can google the school and the name on your phone?"

Kirstie nodded and started typing in her phone. A moment later, she was wearing an astonished expression. "There's not much," she said, "except this... I don't know, it looks like a post on a message board. It's in some language I don't understand... Maybe it's Finnish? Otso might be able to read it..."

She held her phone out for the others look at the post: "Hn hlt a vera fr skla sem heitir Avalon Academy fyrir Young Ladies," it read, "en engin skr um til netinu. Vinsamlegast, ef hefur einhverjar upplsingar, hafu samband vi mig."

WAR ROOM (Martin; NPCs: Anne, Eve, Gaspar, Newton)
"If 'is powers took away ze abilities, and 'e 'ad willing volunteers or convicted criminals, zat would be one zing. But zis is ze story of Omelas all over again. We may need to sweeten ze deal... Do we or ze U.N. know anyzing more about ze Milleau?"

"I would be surprised if they do," Newton said. "They're local criminals--hardly an international problem yet."

Gaspar rolled his eyes. "Big surprise: the United Nations is useless." The Spaniard sighed. "Okay, so... what can we do to sweeten the deal?"

"We must publicize zat 'is cause can be aided by zis course of action so zat it would be suspicious why 'e would not take us up on ze offer. Assuming 'e is trying to avoid dealing wiz anyone from ze school since we know 'is dirty secret."

"Except that it would be pretty easy to say he was only declining our offer because he does not want to risk seeing children harmed," Eve said. She shrugged. "I mean, if I were him, that's the route I'd take. Maybe he's not that smart?"

"We stress 'ow zese 'kids' train wiz Vienna's own 'Volunteers', a group responsible for ze lowering of crime rates around ze city. 'Ow one man, as talented as 'e is does not 'ave to do zis alone. Zink our PR person can 'spin' zat?"

"I have faith that she could," Newton said. "Shall I contact her?"

Fiore sighed. "Not that I'm one to judge anyone for not adhering to a codename, but I think Blue Knight would appreciate a little bit of anonymity when we're in the field." He smiled at his underclassmen, to show them he didn't mean to sound stern. "It's hard to adjust to, I know... Keeping track of what names to call each other and when."

"I guess you're right, Fiore." Shiver nodded slowly. "Someone like Blue Knight, who's been out there, probably has to worry about that a lot more than we do. I mean, I barely remember I even have a codename most of the time."

"Right, sorry, Shiver." Ursa's face scrunched up in thought. "Although, to be fair Fiore, you're one to talk: your name is your codename."

That brought a laugh from the British girl. "I think that makes Fiore the smart one, doesn't it? His is the easiest to remember."

"Then again," said Ursa, "technically so is mine: they're just in two different languages."

"For most people," Fiore said, "a codename is a way to protect their loved ones. The man I fought yesterday? Randy's father? There is nothing that will stop him from going after my family--my parents or grandparents, my aunts and uncles, cousins... Rose and I have a little sister whose powers have not yet manifested. He could easily go after them. I feel justified in that someone may not assume 'Fiore' is my real name. In my native Italiana, 'fiore' means 'flower'. They may actually think it's my codename." He smirked at the other New Vindicators. "Plus, it helps that nobody calls me by my last name."

A quiet descended over the group. "Do you think they're doing okay in there?" Ursa wondered aloud.

Shiver shrugged. "I don't hear gunshots or explosions, so they're probably all right. Harry said he would double click the comm if there was a problem."

Fiore sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Felsic leaned over to whisper, "The Blue Knight" to Shiver.

MARRAKESH: INSIDE (Blue Knight; NPCs: Prodigy)
    "Kmpfen, oder laufen?"

    "Kmpf," Prodigy said.

    VIENNA (Kas; NPCs: Agnes, Yavorshak)
Magnitude waited for Greystone and Rheid to leave the room with Agnes' uncle before he continued. "Very well, now Stefon is out of the room... Agnes, I need you to tell me exactly what is going on."

    "I did tell-"

"When I arrived you did not seem unduly distressed and, I think, had Stefon done the horrible things you claim, he would not have permitted this... homage on your walls."

"He did! He kidnapped me! He had my father killed and my mother locked away! He's trying to use me for my power!"

"And just as important, exactly how did you manage to contact me? I have no psychic powers, so either you do or for some reason, someone who does contacted me on your behalf."

Agnes face twisted into a proud smile. "I'm a Neo-Sapien," she said. "I can go into a person's dreams. I have to imprint them, first. I mean, I can't just decided to go into the President's dreams whenever I want. I have to get close to them--close enough to see them."

"When were you close to Magnitude?" Yavorshak asked.

"Yesterday," Agnes said. Her voice lilted happily as she recounted the ordeal from yesterday: "There was an earthquake and these... these men told us all that we were going to be hostages, but no one would be hurt. Then, Magnitude showed up. There was this other man with him... and this girl..." He tone turned dark as her thoughts turned to Rose. "Magnitude saved me and I... I wanted to talk to him, but he took off. I imprinted him, though, so that I'd be able to talk to him in his dream.

She hugged herself and swayed from side-to-side. "Now that you're here, I can come into your dreams again tonight."

"Before this situation becomes very ugly for your stepfather and yourself-"

    "He is not my stepfather."

"Why don't you tell me what is really going on?"

"I told you!" Agnes snapped. "Those two men took me and you came to save me! I knew! I just knew you'd come for me! You wouldn't let anything bad happen to me!"

Jack nodded as that explained a lot. "Ok, so she already was a fan of Magnitude before that and it probably made it worse being directly saved by him."

"So what's her problem with you? Why would she make those kind of accusations about you if you've been the one taking care of her?"
Jack suspected that it was more of a resentment over her family's situation than anything else but he wanted to get a better read on Stefon.

Kas was just about out of patience. Taking a deep breath, he calmed himself. "So, you purposefully put yourself in danger by coming into an active emergency zone...and contributed to the escape of the Vitesse Brothers by those same actions."

              Why couldn't she be hung up on a musician, like a normal psychotic teenager? he didn't miss the change in the timbre of her voice when she mentioned Rose, after all, it was the same tone Astrid used when speaking about Elizabeth or Princess Sophie. The two women who'd shown any interest him and they were both in other dimensions. On the plus side, he had twice as many stalkers as the next closest competitor at the academy. Taking another deep breath, he said as calmly as he could;

"And no, I would prefer my dreams to remain private, danke. Now, all we have to do is determine why you returned here after you were freed from the villains. I mean this gentleman you are living with killed your parents and has been keeping you prisoner, ja? So, having escaped him and with no family for him to use as leverage against you, I am curious as to why you returned to captivity instead of contacting the authorities?""

Stefon frowned. "I was never really around, the last few years. My sister's declining mental health, coupled with her husband's... vocal objections to my lifestyle? I kept my distance. I'm here now because I'm all she really has, and..." The man sighed. "I'm seeing so much of my sister in her. I'm worried Agnes may be just as delusional as her mother."

                "Okay, what about Ratoncito Perez?"

Kirstie typed on her phone--a challenge without a full keyboard. Finally, she watched as the results flashed up on the tiny screen and a confused look appeared on her face. "It's... the tooth fairy." She set her phone down on the bedside table, to let Lex read for himself. Ratoncito Perez was something out of Spanish folklore: a mouse who acted much the way the tooth fairy did. "Why would my father tell you to remember this?"

"He... Uncle Stefon would... He's insane! And he's gay! He has sex with men!" She folded her arms across her chest defiantly, as though that would explain everything.

Doctor Yavorshak couldn't stay quiet any longer. "Yes, and his eyes are green and he has horrible taste in clothes. None of these things make him evil, Agnes. None of these things give any credibility to your claims."

Agnes glared at the older woman. "Who's she?" she asked, her voice full of venom.

"I'm Doctor Yavorshak," explained the woman. "I'm the counselor at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Magnitude here thought that it might prudent for me to join him on this escapade. He thought that my particular skill set might be of use in helping you."

Agnes sneered at them both. "I'm not nuts," she hissed.

"No one is saying that," Doctor Yavorshak said, "but you are in need of help, correct? I can make arrangements to have you remanded into the school's custody, if you so wish. It could be better than Austria's foster care system. You'd be around people your own age--people with powers... Did Kirstie's dad just troll him to keep him from doing something stupid? He considered it then decided against it. William should know by now that Lex was fully capable of being stupid when ever he felt like it.

So what did that leave him?

He walked over to Kirstie's bed, and lifted up the pillow to see if there was anything under it.

Kas took a deep breath as Agnes seemed to be pushing back against Doctor Yavorshak's entirely reasonable arguments.

"Agnes...nobody is saying you're crazy. When this happened..." Kas pulled down his collar, exposing the ugly rope-burn scar across his neck. "...and I lost my sight, I didn't go crazy, but I needed therapy. Not simply to learn braille and learn how to function as a non-sighted person, but also because it was a shock to my reality. Trauma can be like that. It can be like an emotional cancer and therapy is the only real way to cure it. Nobody is crazy simply because they need help. Did you ever think that the reason Stefon does not do the right things for you is not because he is gay, but because nobody has helped him be a good parent? Being gay doesn't make him a bad person. Not understanding what you need from a parent doesn't make him evil. It simply means that the pair of you could use some assistance. Everyone needs help at some point. Why do you think I asked Jack and Armand and Stephanie...Doktor Yavorshak to come with me to find you? I needed their help."

                                "Let us help you Agnes."
