"He is?" Violet smiled uncertainly. She wasn't sure how to react. "Have you talked to him yet?"

      The Blue Knight

Gwyn paid attention to the lessons, knowing on one level that there might very soon come a day when he'd be grateful for them. On the other hand...he could fly with more manuverability than a plane, and less noise as well. But one look at Pirjo reminded him of the importance. Slip of a girl, she might have been, but holding her and flying would have been quite a stress. Only so many hours to hit the gym, there were. It was flippin awkward holding a girl his own height, too.

Once in the room, he looked to Pirjo, throwing her a smile he worked for rather than felt. His shades were back on. "Eyes peeled, chuck." He said, turning to the room. Nicer than his, it was.

He whipped his phone out, getting the camera ready. Gwyn spoke, mostly to himself. "Awright, mun. Let's see what's what, ya?" He checked the room as much as possible. Under the mattress , in the closet, the drawers of the dresser, the bathroom (both the drawers there and the toilet tank), underneath the blinds, even inside the room's heater. Everyplace a clue was to be found, likely or not. Sometimes clues were in obvious places and nobody noticed them, as Holmes would have said, but sometimes you had to work your arse off for em. Robert would have said that.

If zey capture you zen zey really DO 'ave somezing over me instead of a recording of Kas. 'Oney, you've been zrough enough yesterday. Please reconsider." Martin asked. He wasn't going to forbid or insist or anything so Spartan, but he'd at least try to dissuade.

Lex sighed, "Well, you see we got this new bitch- I mean, horrid bitch- Sorry what I meant to say was heinous bitch..."

He pauses, closes his eyes as though concentrating and slowly says, "'Charming young lady' named Rose" in a fashion that doesn't leave anything to the imagination.

"Like the first thing she did here was insult Doug and it's basically just spiraled downwards from there. I mean, shit, Doug's a nice guy but he's like fragile, ya know?" He pauses long enough to shoot a glare at Rose, "Girl is basically as far from Fiore as she can get. Hard to believe they're even related."

"And Doug's all self conscious and lonely now,"
He fumed quietly for a moment, "He's down on himself 'cause he thinks he's ugly and 'cause he doesn't have a girlfriend."

"And 'cause he turns into a bird. 'Cept last time he did that he went were-Quail," He shakes his head in frustration, "And he's acting like that ain't no big deal."

He sighed, "And he ain't talking to me because he's mad at me 'cause I still got my folks, and a girlfriend, and... well, combat powers. Basically everything he wants."

"You know all of this is reminding me,"
He took another bite of his breakfast, "I need to get Rose deported back to France."

Kas drummed his fingers o his free hand against the helmet he still carried and chewed his bottom lip as he tried to come to grips with this new information.

"Very well, Mouloud just try to relax and move as little as possible. We'll get somebody durable, Pirjo or Armand or Eve to assist you. That way you won't accidentally injure them. Until then, just try to keep calm. Now...this man who shook your hand...can you describe him?"

Gesturing over to Jack, Kas said. "This man is likely the same person who caused Victor and Otso so many problems. He is also most likely Durendal, the French ubermensch Rose and I encountered yesterday. He told me he could cause Neo-Sapien powers to run wild. He failed to tell me that he steals the powers he wields from others. He can also detect Neo-Sapiens and identify their powers, but his bragging about his abilities has given me a plan."

Yes, Kas had an idea of how to handle this enemy now. It had taken him awhile, but his mind was piecing together shards of unrelated knowledge to form a new picture. He just needed to confirm certain things.

"Jack, wasn't there some sort of mind mage here yesterday? Not Tallemaja, but a different one. So much was happening I barely had time to catalogue the resources currently at our disposal."

"We're going to get this bastard Mouloud and we're going to make him fix what he's done. Doktor Fisher had said we would...and now, I know how."

Finally! I have a plan how to defeat Voleur/Durendal!

Herta scoffed. "You trust him? Well, then you must be either an idiot or a hypocrite."

Vlad groaned. "Can the two of you please-"

"With my powers, how easy do you think it would be for me to escape this place?" Herta glared at Jack. "How hard do you think it be to find me? To catch me? To bring me to justice? You hate me because of my affiliation with Laputa--I get that... but Vladi here was one of their agents, too. The biggest difference between us? I took my punishment. I faced my crimes. I'm doing what I'm told. It would be so easy to just leave, and yet..." She played at looking confused. "Remind me which of us took off running, afraid to face the music? Then explain to me why you trust him more than me."
Jack shook his head. “You’re still wrong. I don’t hate you because of you being affiliated with Laputa; I don’t like you because you act like you enjoy hurting people.”

“Hell’s bells Herta, the first time I met you was when you planted a bomb here and was bragging about it and all the damage it would do to the school and the people inside it. Then when it went off you laughed about how we needed to be digging the people out of the wreckage and took off.”

“As for why I trust Vlad, it’s simple: he’s risked his life time and again to help others, and faced the consequences of the actions he took that others thought were too extreme. After we’d brought down the flying island he was the one that realized there were still members of Laputa still running around and felt that someone should go looking for them. That’s why he left, not because he was afraid of what would be done to him because he’d “joined” them.

“It’s why he wants to do this now – he’s expecting a harsher punishment than you and the other pawns got and that he won’t be around to do it later. If that’s not acting responsible then I couldn’t give you a better answer as to why I trust him: because he’s proven himself to be trustworthy.”

“All you’ve proved to me is that you’re short tempered and willing to be violent when it suits you. When I called you stupid you’re response was to attack me then run off and pout about it, then when I saw you next all you did was antagonize me about how “helpful” you’d been, trying to tell me how wrong I’d been when you’d have been better off simply letting your actions speak for themselves since Fiore has been telling anyone who’ll listen to him how you’re the one that saved him and that Vindicator that he was working with.”

“I know you’ve heard a bit about me from my dad; you know how stubborn I can be but you also know I’m honest and I’m telling you that I’m willing to give you a fresh start. No more leaving a room when you walk in, no more dirty looks while I leave. I’ll give you the same chance as I’m giving the other pawns.”

CAFETERIA (Violet; NPCs: Eve and Gus)
Eve shook her head, prompting Gus to look at Violet, drop his voice, and ask, "Who's Jay?"

Before either girl could explain, all conversation was cut short when someone screamed, "Sit your ass down, Mike!" It was Gaspar, the boy who had been with Lex earlier. He was standing at the table where Rose and her friends were sitting. Mike was on his feet.

                    VILLA (Harry; NPCs: Pirjo)
Upon entering, Harry's eyes fell on the houseplants. There were houseplants in every corner of every room. His mind immediately went to what he knew about Robor: as the source of Randy's powers, the man had Randy's abilities--including the power to see through vegetation.

"Nice place," Pirjo said, making her way into the room. She tapped her foot and frowned. Harry knew why: if a fight found them, her powers would be ill-fitted for this place. Her body would burn through the carpet and through the floor below. If they landed in a fight, she might fall through the floor, and the floor below, and so on... "Gorgeous view..."

The blonde moved carefully. She treated the room like a crime scene and seemed hesitant to disturb any evidence. "Looks like they ate in," she said, gesturing to the cart room service had left. There was a stack of plates on it. Remnants of melted cheese were stuck to the top plate, which was practically glued to the next plate thanks to the thick layer of syrup coating it. Below that: a plate with touches of grease and gravy. On the table was a bowl with some lite orange water. Juice from fruit, Harry realized. Not far from that was another plate--one with touches of ketchup and grease. Several glasses and coffee cups were speckled around the room.

Only two of the beds looked to have been slept in. The others were all made and made in the same fashion--housekeeping, if he had to wager a guess. It made sense: Robor and Skew could teleport, and could come and go as they pleased. It wasn't likely that they would risk sleeping so close to dangerous criminals they barely knew. That hardly accounted for the others, though: Ogre, Blackguard, Caballero, Cleave, and Haboob lacked the luxury of instantaneous movement. Where had they slept?

"I take it they didn't take advantage of housekeeping?" Pirjo said.

No, they wouldn't have. According to Martin, the room he'd found had a map of Vienna with notes about each of the New Vindicators surrounding it. They would refuse housekeeping in favor of their privacy... but one of the teleporters--either Skew or Robor--must have come to collect anything related to their planning. They had come for the information, but they had left the mess of dishes. What else would they have missed?

Harry started to check the waste bins. One yielded a wadded page from a yellow legal pad with the corner torn off. Most of it was idle scribbling and notes on his classmates: Karell, Cahan, Meyers, Rauf... It listed their powers. Below that was a series of numbers--all but one was cut off by the tear, but they all started with the same three digits: +212. Phone numbers, Harry realized. Grabbing his smart phone, Harry plugged "212 country code" into a search. "Moroccan telephone calling code," he read.

In one of the bathrooms, the teen knocked over the waste bin. The wrapper from the miniature bar of soap, some tissue paper, a spent toilet paper roll, and a syringe spilled out. A syringe. Someone had used a syringe. Four of his classmates, Moraccan telephone number, and a syringe. That was what he had to go on...

TATJANA'S ROOM (Martin; NPCs: Sarah and Tatjana)
"I am not a delicate little flower that needs coddled," Tatjana hissed.

"He's not saying you are," Sarah said. "He just... he needs to do this one alone, Tat." Sarah flashed Martin an apologetic look.

"If it were the other way around?" Tatjana asked her boyfriend. "If it were may telling you to stay, and that I had to go alone... what would you do?"

                    CAFETERIA (Lex; NPCs: Gaspar)
Gaspar stared intently at Rose's table for a few moments. "I see," he said before slowly standing up. "I'll be right back."

The Spaniard made his way to their table. He didn't know which of the three girls was Rose Caspian, but he had a hunch. He also would have wagered it would be easy to get her to reveal herself.

"Hey, Gaspar," Mike said awkwardly when he stood at the end of their table. "I saw you come in. It's good to have you back."

Gaspar nodded. "I figure it won't be long before the rumors spread so... I left because I killed someone on Laputa. I killed Lexus' mother. When it happened, I lost control of my powers, and I thought that I was too dangerous to be around... but I have control, now. I don't think I'll accidentally kill anyone."

No one really knew what to say to that. That didn't stop Rose, though. "Oooookay," she said before muttering "freak" under her breath.

"Mostly, I just wanted to come over here and tell Rose that she's a stuck up little bitch."

The brown-haired girl's jaw dropped in surprise. The redhead looked excited. The blonde with black streaks looked enraged. Mike was on his feet in no time. "Sit your ass back down, Mike!" Gaspar barked. "You and I both know that without our powers it'd be no contest, and with them... Well, you know...

Rose looked to Mike, expecting him to not be daunted by such threats.

"Props to you for standing up for a girl, but couldn't you find one a little more deserving of this bravado? I mean... sure, she's cute, but she's a terrible human being. Do you even care what she did to Doug? To one of your friends? Bros before hoes, Mike. Come on, Mike: you're better than this. You can do better than her."

"Look," Rose said, rising to her feet, "I don't know who you are, or what I did to you-"

"I have a hard time believing your Fiore's little sister," Gaspar said. "Your brother is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I don't know anyone who can say anything bad about him. You, though?" He shook his head at her. "You realize this attitude you're coping with everyone isn't doing you any favors? I mean... here, let's just take the room's temperature..." Gaspar turned slightly, looking at everyone looking his way. "Does anyone here actually like Rose Caspian?" he asked. "Seriously, anyone who actually likes her, just go and and raise your hand..."

Before they could react, Rose rounded on her friends. Glaring at them, Kelly and Lena joined Mike in raising their hands.

Finn, Ellen, Annaliese, Adam, Matt, Venefica, Armande, Randy... None of them raised their hands. Gaspar looked back at Rose. "See?" he asked. "No one likes you."

"They like me," Rose snapped, gesturing towards those seated at her table.

Gaspar pointed at Mike. "He's just hoping to God you'll let him get to second base." His accusatory finger moved to Kelly and Lena then. "They're just too afraid of you to not raise their hands. Look at them--it's painted all over their faces."

"Yeah, well... well... no one likes you either!"

Gaspar shrugged. "No one should. Like I said: I kind of killed a woman with my powers, which rage uncontrollably when my emotions overwhelm me."

                    "You're a psychopath."

                    "You're a sociopath."

Rose screamed in Gaspar's face, then rounded on Mike. "Are you going to just stand there and let him talk to me like that?"

"Yeah, Mike," Gaspar said. "Are you going to just stand there and let me talk to her like she's a bitch that no one here likes?"

Mike looked as though his head might explode. "I... I..."

Gaspar cupped a hand around his ear and leaned in. "What's that, Mike? C'mon: use your big boy words."

"It's no wonder Tatjana chose Martin over you."

Rose grinned as Gaspar's smug grin gave way to a baleful glare.

"I know what this is really all about: you can't handle that someone else has someone while you have no one. Hell, Tatjana won't even talk to you, will she?"

                    Gaspar's fists started to shake.

"Why did you even come back?" Mike asked. "Didn't you get the message when none of us came looking for you? Doug, Lex, me... None of us went looking for you, Gaspar. None of us cared what happened to you. None of us really wanted you to come back, and that was before we knew you'd become a murderer."

MOULOUD'S ROOM (Jack and Kas; NPCs: Lexus and Mouloud)
"Now... this man who shook your hand... can you describe him?"

Mouloud went on to describe the man--all of which was useless to Kas. Blind as he was, information like the colour of his hair was utterly useless. Mouloud's description of him as a Frenchman who claimed to want to help, however, sealed it. Durendal had come to relieve the New Vindicators, and introduced himself to Mouloud.

Once he'd consulted with Jack, the American moved to help Mouloud get to the infirmary, leaving Kas to figure out what his next move would be: did he pursue rescuing Agnes, work on getting in front of Crux's recording, or hunt down Durendal?

                    HALL (Otso; NPCs: Kowalski)
"Honestly?" Matt said. "What I want... When I was young, I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be Spider-Man--use my power to make a difference. As I grew older, I just wanted to be able to be free--to be able to live in a world without fear. Moksha was that, for a time. When it fell apart, I wanted it back. Eventually, though... I met your mother, and I just... I was content to live a normal life.

"When I found out about General Basenji? I wanted to make a difference, Otso. I wanted... God, I wanted to be Spider-Man again. It probably sounds stupid, and childish, but I was... I know that he was a world away--that America was a world away--but there was all this news and I was worried about this sort of stuff reaching us in our happy little bubble.

"I never should have left home, Otso. I never should have left you and your mother. I should have..." The man started to tear up. "What I want is to watch you become a man. I'd scrub the toilets here, if that was all that had for me, just to be able to be close to you. That's what I want. I just... wanted to make sure that's what you wanted. I wanted to make sure you'd forgiven me for leaving."

The two had arrived at the door to the infirmary. "How's about this? You go in there, and see your girl... and if you want, come find me in the faculty housing. Maybe we can get lunch or dinner or whatever you have time for. Like I said: I don't want to cramp your style, and she needs you a hell of a lot more than I do."

GYM (Jack; NPCs: Herta and Vlad)
"All you've proved to me is that you’re short tempered and willing to be violent when it suits you. When I called you stupid your response was to attack me then run off and pout about it, then when I saw you next all you did was antagonize me about how 'helpful' you'd been, trying to tell me how wrong I'd been when you’d have been better off simply letting your actions speak for themselves since Fiore has been telling anyone who'll listen to him how you're the one that saved him and that Vindicator that he was working with.

No more leaving a room when you walk in, no more dirty looks while I leave. I'll give you the same chance as I'm giving the other pawns."

Herta sat and listened to everything Jack said, and when he was finished, she smiled. "You're wrong: your dad never mentioned you."

Lex looked at what was left of his breakfast and muttered to himself, "Why me?" as Gaspar and Mike started yelling.

Oh well, breakfast just wasn't a thing that was in his future anyways. He ran a hand through his hair, wondering for the umpteenth time why he'd bothered getting up this morning. Oh right, breakfast for Kirstie. He glanced over to see if Siege had completed it, but was left without an excuse to intervene.

And after catching what Mike had just said, he couldn't afford to ignore the situation anymore.

"What you talking about, Mikey?" Lex asked incredulously as he walks over, "'Cause I was out there looking for Gaspar. You seriously telling me you were too busy chasing tail to even notice?"

"You even think to ask Doug if he went looking? Hell, Harry and Jack went looking and they don't even hang out with Gaspar,"
He crossed his arms, "$#!+ man, so far as I know you were the only one who didn't go looking. Don't know what that says about you."

"So, yeah, say what you want about Gaspar, man. At least he's all in when his friends need him."

                      "Come on, man,"
He says to Gaspar, "Leave him with his poisonous little airhead." He snorts, "Man named his own punishment, and it's worse than anything anybody else could do to him."

He tries to steer Gaspar away, privately adding, "You know what the saddest part is? Guy had a chance with the cute new girl who was actually interested in him and he pissed it away."

"Wonder if she likes the banjo..."

"No one doubts your strengz or your bravery, Tatjana." Martin says, his voice even but still pleading. "No one doubts ze potency of your vocal abilities."

"I am saying zat I am about to antagonize some not very bright individuals. I trust in my ability to get away from zem. He thought about the slowness of pace he would have to maintain to drag out the gold creation process; he thought about if they pointed a gun at Tatjana and ordered him to work faster. He tried to let the desperation and sincerity show in his voice.

"Please Tatjana. I promise you zat I will be fine and I will come back to you. But please stay 'ere wiz your family." He gestures at Sarah's belly. "Your growing family."

It was true. The last of his kin was Elle, and if Rembrandt was to be believed, she may have been a lie this entire time - an animated doll of his mother's crafting with no greater purpose than as a meat puppet for Lacuna. Tatjana had flesh-and-blood family, one that needed her.

"Man named his own punishment," Lex said, "and it's worse than anything anybody else could do to him."

He tried to steer Gaspar away, but the Spaniard shrugged him off. "You like to bully people, Rose," he said. "I'm going to show you exactly what that feels like. You hurt one of my friends, and until you make that better, I am going to devote my energy to making sure you're miserable. Best part? I'll do it just like you probably do: I'll skirt the rules, so that you have no defense against me--no hope that I'll be expelled.

"Like you said: I'm a psychopath... and you're going to learn that I'm a very creative one."

Gaspar turned and walked with Lex out of the room. "You know what the saddest part is?"

"That she'd be cute if she wasn't so evil?"

"Guy had a chance with the cute new girl who was actually interested in him and he pissed it away."

"So, you made a move instead?"

Suddenly, it hit Lex: Gaspar left after Laputa--he didn't know about Lex and Kirstie.

                          WAREHOUSE (Martin; NPCs: Crux)
At the address Crux gave him, Martin found several security cameras following his movement. On his approach, his mobile phone buzzed with another missive from his blackmailers: "The door is open. Come in."

Sure enough, the nearest door was open. Inside, he was greeted by a pair of soldiers wearing rubber Halloween masks of Senator Amy Bedford, the American politician and presidential hopeful assassinated last year by one of the Vindicators.

Both men wore dark green jumpsuits and white armbands fastened around the right arm. Both men were carrying military-issue assault rifles.

One gestured for Martin to follow him into the next room. There, he found two more figured dressed identically to the first two. These ones were sitting at a folding table, typing on laptops. At Martin's approach, one rose up and nodded curtly. "Hello, Martin. I am Crux." His voice was deep, but it sounded forced--as though he were trying to disguise his voice. Why, unless they had met before? Martin certainly couldn't recall having smelt the man before. "I am the one who has been messaging you. If you'll follow me?"

He led Martin into a docking bay where mounds of gravel rested. "It's not exactly lead," Crux said, "but I trust it will do." He pointed up to a camera in the corner by the ceiling, then to another in the other corner. "Every room is being monitored, with the signal being fed to another site. Do anything suspicious, and our comrades have orders to release the tape.

                          "Do you understand?"

Gwyn moved to cover the plants with the sheets-he doubted they were monitoring the room round the clock like, but why risk it?

Then he stood and considered what he'd found.

"So, Morocco. Mebbe that's where they relocated to. Lexus, Juozas, Matt, 'n Otso. Coulda been anything in that 'un." He waved to the syringe.

"Maybe Martin or his sister can tell us what." It wasn't much.

"Blackguard might tell us a bit about this, but as is? I say we head back to the plane." What a waste of time.

Martin tried to look bored and unimpressed even as he recorded every detail, every scent for future reference. He hoped the comm's signal was getting through, but likely it was being blocked. Give them something they know they can stop. He most assuredly did not look a the flower peeking out from his pants pocket.

"You know 'ow insane zis is right?" He asks Crux in a rebellious tone.

"What you did was like... getting a puppy from ze pound, going up to a random woman and saying 'Sleep wiz me or I tweak zis puppy's nose.' Sure, she may care about puppies in some general way, and not want to see one inconvenienced, but you really 'ave little leverage 'ere."

"Besides, my powers 'ave zeir limits. Zere is only so much matter I can alter in a day's time. Do you plan to keep me 'ere for ze monzs it would take me to do zat much material, or do you allow me to come and go daily after classes for my regularly-scheduled extortion? What are your plans 'ere?"
He asks, looking at the masked man like he was crazy.

Just as a show of faith though, He picks up a small piece of gravel from the scatterings on the floor and concentrates, his face scrunching. He moves his hand to reveal it's transformation into gold.

Kas patiently listened to Mouloud describe the man he'd shaken hands with. It wouldn't him any good, but it would help Jack and anyone else who got the description. If there was one thing leading the Volunteers had taught him, it was there were always other perspectives to be considered.

As Jack helped the super-strong youth to the infirmary...and probably from there to the Wreck Room...Kas told the shapeshifter; "I've got to go see Doktor Fisher. If you are free soon enough, meet me at her office."

With a sigh, Kas made his way back to the Headmistress' office. She needed to be informed of this latest development. He hoped his mother got here quickly because he really needed to get to finding Agnes or Durendal...it was difficult to decide which was a more emergent situation. As it stood, he had promised Doktor Fisher he would stay put until the press conference was arranged and he was a man of his word, but it was grating on him.

Arriving at her door, he knocked. "I hate to be a source of constant bad news Doktor, but we've got to talk."
