After Doktor Fischer's revelations about Durendal, Kas just plunked down in one of the chairs in the office and put his head in his hands. Honestly, he shouldn't have been surprised. Durendal was awfully skittish about returning to the academy with them and now he knew why. He made play he was a hero, but he was no better than Lacuna, co-opting the lives of others for his own selfish reasons.

"Not that we even know where Durendal is, but how exactly do you plan on forcing him to give back the powers he's stolen? We don't know what his limits are, if he even has any. What is to stop him from...relieving control from anyone who goes to face him?"

"Despite any suffering Otso, Viktor and others have been through, perhaps a measure of caution is in order. He can detect Neo-Sapiens...accurately. At range. Surprising him will be difficult for anyone who might have a chance against him in combat."

Standing up, Kas turned to leave, then paused. "Doktor Fischer...one last thing. Do you think you could get me a list of the civilian casualties from yesterday's assault from the local authorities. I feel compelled to tender my condolences to those families that suffered any deaths because the school was targeted."

Tapping his fingers against his helm, he turned back and looked at Fischer with as much sympathy as he could manage, given his eyes were incapable of emoting. 'I had plans Headmistress, but they are being tended to. As Martin has plans himself, if you need me to stay, I will."

"He said she came to him in a dream." Larrikin shrugged. "I dunno, mate. I know it sounds nuts, but yesterday an Irish man made of plants threatened to kill me unless we let him, his girl hulk, and a guy in a bowler hat who makes portals leave." He nodded to Vlad. "This was after he jumped out of nowhere, looking like a gummy bear. Sanity and this place parted ways long ago."
As he wrote Jack smirked at Larrikin's assessment of life at the academy. "Sad part is you get used to it." Still translating the information he considered the answer to his question. "Seems like Kas is just a white knight to all the damsels in distress, and this time around it's us playing his round table."

"Uh, Gus... what are you..." Violet paused for a moment as she admired how the boy looked in the form-fitting Vindicators uniform. Then his skin rippled, like Otso's did when he was changing. A moment later, Gus was an alligator. Violet put her hands up defensively, afraid he was going to attack. "Please Gus. Don't do this. You don't have to-" Violet's hands started to ice over involuntarily and the air around her got colder. "Please just... let's talk instead ok?"

          The Blue Knight

Gwyn's blond hair ruffled as he shook his head. Was he just some sort of reptile magnet?

He stepped forward, a yard or two behind Violet. He called to her, voice misleadingly casual. "Allright, Violet?"

Gwyn thought he'd heard of something like this before, a crocodile man-but that was in Egypt, or summat. Looking at the uniform, he supposed it was too much trouble for the school to tell them they'd have a new student-or at least a potentially dangerous guest.

Then again, nearly one in two of the students here could be a right bastard in a fight if they wanted to be.

              CAFETERIA (Lex; NPCs: Gaspar)
Ignoring the crocodile boy a few yards from them, the two boys ordered breakfast and were soon taking seat at a table. "I tried to die," Gaspar admitted. "I couldn't do it myself, though: I'm too much of a coward. I... I was trying to get someone else to do it for me. I was picking a fight when Jack and Ca--uh... Harry... found me. They brought me back here. Next thing I know, this girl shows up in a flash of light, and says she's Jason's sister. She takes us to this other world--Earth, but different, you know? Neos ruled the world, Lex. They were kings and queens and it was this... There was another Kas, and he was trying to kill this princess, and there was another Harry, but he was an evil knight, and...

"And I thought it was what I needed. When I left here, my powers were... After what happened, I couldn't control them. If I got upset, a storm would come. I was dangerous. I felt like I needed to be put down. They took me that other world, and... and I found my control again. Then I got back here, I saw Lexus... Kas, he... He put us on a team together, and I... Well, he knew about it... I figured he just... I thought that maybe he... I came clean. I told Lexus about his mother..."

FISHER'S OFFICE (Kas and Martin; NPCs: Fisher)
Fisher nodded glumly. "As soon as this is rectified, we need to find this Durendal," she said. "Poor Otso hasn't been able to transform back to a human and Viktor's been stuck on that treadmill for days. The Amanar girls would have drifted into space had it not been for Martin's quick thinking...

"As soon as this Crux is dealt with, we need to find Durendal and force the son of a bitch to give these young people their lives back."

"Fine. Zough, given we do not Crux's timeline, we might wish to confront ze power zeif sooner zan later. Ze Amanar girl's lives and zose of our fellow students are significantly impacted."

"Not that we even know where Durendal is," Kas suggested, "but how exactly do you plan on forcing him to give back the powers he's stolen? We don't know what his limits are, if he even has any. What is to stop him from... relieving control from anyone who goes to face him? Despite any suffering Otso, Viktor, and others have been through, perhaps a measure of caution is in order. He can detect Neo-Sapiens... accurately. At range. Surprising him will be difficult for anyone who might have a chance against him in combat."

Fisher grew quiet. Kas had given their enemy a face, and it terrified her: they knew the man could cause a Neo-Sapien to lose control over their powers, but that he was able to access them at the same point was new information. It made sense, though: he must have targeted the Amanar girls for their ability to fly. When the New Vindicators arrived, it just gave him more options. It gave him Viktor's invulnerability and Otso's ability to transform into a bear. Durendal was a flying, impervious, unstoppable grizzly bear, and suddenly Fisher was glad the man had not gotten his hands on Martin, Mira, or Corey: adding transmutation, plasma generation, or the Vindicator's command over ether would have only hindered things more. Likewise, she was happy that Kas had kept him from using his powers on the Vitesse brothers. Viktor's powers coupled with the Vitesse speed would be a nightmare of epic proportions.

Still, there was good news to come out of this: Durendal had not made a move to take Kas or Rose's powers. Why? Was it because he feared the other's retribution if he made a move on one? He didn't seem to have such a problem in Romania. Perhaps it was the nature of their abilities: despite how horrific it was that Viktor could no longer stop himself, it was worse to imagine a world where Kas could not control his powers--where the gravity within his range shifted permanently. Likewise, Rose being unable to control her powers was unsettling. Fisher had seen the damage Robor had intentionally caused, and she estimated a similar picture should Rose become Durendal's next victim.

Kas said that the man had seemed to genuinely want to help. Was it possible that Durendal taken the powers he had taken because he thought there was less chance of them causing damage? Had he refrained from taking Kas and Rose's powers--Martin's, Mira's, and Corey's--for fear of what would happen if those individuals lost control?

There was no mistaking that Durendal was ruining lives for his own reasons... but what if he still clung to morals and convictions? What if deep down, the man wasn't a monster? If that was the case, they might be able to appeal to him, and any decency that remained in him.

The headmistress was snapped from her reverie when Kas rose to leave. "Doktor Fischer..." he said, pausing en route to the door, "one last thing: do you think you could get me a list of the civilian casualties from yesterday's assault from the local authorities? I feel compelled to tender my condolences to those families that suffered any deaths because the school was targeted."

"Only on the condition that you go with a representative of the school," the woman said. "Perhaps Doctor Yavorshak can accompany you, and offer her help during this time?"

Martin likewise moved to leave. "I guess we wait until Crux give furzer contact. Until zen, should I wait 'ere or may I continue wiz my breakfast plans?"

No sooner had the words left his lips than Martin's phone buzzed again. It was an address for a storage site in the city. "Be there within an hour," a follow up message instructed.

"I had plans, headmistress," Kas said, "but they are being tended to. As Martin has plans himself, if you need me to stay, I will."

Martin showed them the text and Fisher sighed. "We have an hour to plan. What do you need, Martin?"

LIBRARY (Jack; NPCs: Larrikin and Vlad)
Vlad sighed impatiently. "This is a waste of our time," the Romanian said. "How many people could translate German, Jack? We have other needs..."

CAFETERIA (Harry and Violet; NPCs: Gus)
"I'm not... I..." Gus reverted back to his natural shape. "I'm sorry. I didn't know how to... I... I woke up here yesterday, and they told me that I've been missing for a year and that I've been possessed by a girl who made me join a terrorist group that tried to blow up Vienna or something and I just... I..." Gus started to cry. "I just want to go home. I don't know what they did to me! I don't know what they made me do! I want to go home! I want to see my mom and my dad!"

He considers the offer of assistance.

"It should not appear like I 'ave ze official school sanctioning to do zis so I should probably go eizer alone or wiz Kas - it would make sense zat I would 'ave gone to 'im since it concerns 'im."

"Luckily, zey don't seem to know 'ow my powers work. I can go as slowly as I need, claim I 'ave a limit on 'ow much matter I can transmute at a time. I 'ave publicaly changed clozing into metal, but zat 'as been a limited quantity of mass all zings considered."

"You should know zat even 20 pounds of gold is still easily over 'alf a million Euros. Should I create zat much for zem? I 'ave no recourse to revert it once created."

"How quickly can we rob zem of zeir leverage? Are we doing zis press conference zing? And when do we get ze proper auzorities involved? Or ze Vindicators? Zis is extortion."

Kas rubbed his chin. In response to Docktor Fisher's statement about condolences he shrugged. "My orignal plan had been to mail letters of condolence. Nothing so impersonal as an email, but personal letters, with an offer to meet with each family if they so desired. I wouldn't presume it is my place to intrude on people's grief without invitation."

Shaking his finger Martin's direction, he nodded. "Martin brings up several salient points, not the least of which is we have to find a way to get out in front of this. Maybe you don't like the thought of throwing me to the wolves, but never once has keeping something like this secret failed to turn out disastrously in the long run."

"Regardless of how you wish to go about this, I am at your disposal Doktor."

This could not have come at a worse time though. Somewhere out there, Agnes was depending on him to save her and this was keeping him from that mission. From a standpoint of pure logic, this was the more pressing problem...but...a young woman in the hands of unknown assailants, who may well be human traffickers? The thought made him shudder.

                      For now.

"I know what you're trying to do but,"

As he listened to his father tell his tale, Otso's face shifted from one emotion to another. Pride, happiness, sympathy and sadness all had their turn on the young Finnish werebear's face. When the older man finished, Otso embraced his father. Tears streamed down his face as well as he spoke. "Thank you. I think I... I think I understand things a little better now, about why you did some things and.. It means a lot to me. We all do our best, what we think is right. And whichever way the chips fall we gotta try to live with consequences. I guess that's my answer to earlier."

Otso continued a little stronger. Not harsh, just determined. "I am gonna try and find our family in the Sates, though. Just to... to meet them, maybe to get to know them. I've done a lot more over a lot less while I've been here. If there's a chance, I wanna try and find them."

The headmistress grabbed her phone and started to dial. "We'll need legal on this as soon as we can," she said, "which means I'm calling your mother, Kasamir. I'll also want PR tackling this with us. Move forward on the gold, Martin, but move as slowly as possible--lie as much as you can. Tell them you'll need materials you don't have, or that the process takes long periods... You know what to do," she said quickly as Kas' mother picked up.

"Adeltrudis," the headmistress said, "I'm afraid we're in a small situation. I have your son and Martin Curie with me." She put the attorney in speaker then asked Martin to catch the woman up.

"We'll need to get in front of this," Flaegler said once she'd heard it all, "and stress that my son does not have the ability to make these sort of things happen--that he does not command the authority necessary to imprison anyone. We need to stress that he was bluffing, in order to minimize the loss of life. Martin should meet with them, but call the conference as quickly as we can. Keep a communicator on, Martin. I'll be headed in shortly."

The woman hung up, and the headmistress sighed. "You'll be needed when we go public, Kas," the headmistress said. "Martin, I don't want you to go alone. These people have an idea of what you can do--they may be prepared to fight you, in case you try to take them down. I want Mira to follow you in case you need backup. It wouldn't hurt to have Randy on stand-by, too. Wear a flower or something that he can use to monitor your surroundings so that he can jump close to you if needed."

He looked around at the other students gathered here. "How many of them did they make me hurt? I mean, that boy said they... He said someone's throat... How many people here think I did something I didn't do?"

                          CAFETERIA (Harry)
With the crocodile man reverting back, it looked like another disaster had been averted. Now, it was back to his original catastrophe. He had come here looking for backup. He had his mind on Dag or Pirjo, but looking around the refectory, it didn't seem either was here. Turning to leave, he saw the doors open, and Pirjo came striding in...

Gaspar was quiet as Lex tried to comfort him. "Did I ever tell you about my parents?" he asked. "It was about three years ago--in a few months... It was Thursday night. Date night. It was something they'd started a while back--a night out where they just focused on each other. They weren't allowed to talk about me, or work, or anything like that... Just... just them, you know?

"Anyway, they were coming home, and they were at a red light. This guy... He just didn't stop. He hadn't been drinking. He wasn't on his phone. He was tired. He just... It just happened, you know? He just plowed right into them and pushed them out into the intersection. A truck broadsided them, and..."

Gaspar was quiet for several moments.

"I want so badly to talk to him--to tell him what he took from me. I want to punch him and hit him and scream. I know it was just an accident, and I know doing that won't bring them back. I know that he probably thinks about that as much as I do. None of that matters, though. I want to face him, so... I just thought that... Lexus should have that chance. He should be able to face the man who killed his mother, and if he needs to punch me, punch me. If he wants to ask me why, he can ask me why. If he wants... If he... If he wants to... To..."

                          He swallowed hard.

Martin looks in askance toward the Headmistress. "Mira is powerful but not ze stealziest of us. Per'aps Larrikin can drain 'er colors before we go? Good idea on ze open comm, but I will keep it in my body in case I am searched, zen manifest it. Ze flower as back up would be good; zey work wiz an audio/visual expert zat seems competent at radio waves and signals. 'E may find a way to block comms. 'Oo will Randy be reporting to? Will you go ahead and call for 'im to come 'ere? Not zat 'is testimony is admissible as evidence of wrong-doing..."

Martin checks his phone to make sure they had time to set things up before he had to leave to make the rendezvous.
