Otso replied to his dad with a dumbstruck nod as he wiggled his fingers. He finally snapped out of it with a soft, "Maybe we should go get that breakfast now?", as if afraid that speaking too loudly would break the spell, so to speak.

He hurried to change the subject. "Dad? When you were talking with Mister Murphy, you mentioned your dad. I, think we should go..." Otso hesitated, a lot had happened, especially recently.

"...soon to the States to look for our family there. When I was looking for you I heard news about stuff going on there, concentration camps and other crazy things. They said the new American Vindicators broke them out and took them to Canada but everyone left and are laying low and... You never talked about your past so I don't know them but they're still family and we can't just leave them to live on the run."
Otso Karell, codenamed Ursa, on New Vindicators Academy of Europe.

Gwyn held up his hands. "Lookit, I believe you. And its only fair do's I tell you, this girl isn't here anymore. She dropped us off, and then-pop!-she was gone again. No telling when she'll be back."

He looked to the opaque glass, wondering what Newton was making of the conversation. He looked back. "Looks like you're stuck here, Bob. I have no way of finding this girl, and even if she gets back-well her magical bauble didn't seem too reliable."

Gwyn stood up and knocked one hand on the table. "I'll look for another way-for Robert's sake, not yours. But don't hold your breath.

"We need her... and... I want someone else for this--two other people, to be honest. I don't know what you'll think..."

Vlad took a deep breath before continuing: "Ellen. She doesn't trust me. She's angry with me. Rightfully so, Jack. If... if I hand myself over and get the same punishment as the other pawns--if I'm ever going to be a student here again, I will most certainly have to deal with Ellen. Do you think I'm making a mistake by thinking to include her on this?"
Jack took a deep breath of his own before answering. "Maybe. I'm pretty sure she'd go along with whatever you've got in mind but you'd have to watch what you say to her until the two of you have your heart to heart."

"So who else were you wanting to complete this ragtag group?

"If I'm going to be a student here, there is someone else I'll have to deal with--perhaps more so than Ellen... I was thinking that if I go to him--explain the situation... Perhaps he'll view it as an olive branch. Perhaps he'll laugh in my face. Vegas odds are on his holier-than-thou attitude causing him to rant about how I'm insane and no one should trust me and I'm a danger to everyone here... but I was thinking we should also approach Lex with this."
"You've gotta be as #%$&ing crazy."

Violet left the cafeteria and headed down the halls. She turned a corner and collided with someone.

He was an older boy--maybe 17 or 18. He was tall and fit; dark skinned, with a cap of black curls and brown eyes filled with concern. "I'm so sorry!" the handsome boy exclaimed. He had an accent. He sounded Middle-Eastern. "Are you all right? You're not hurt are you?"

          NVAE (Lex)
"It's fine," Kirstie croaked. "Actually, think you could score me some breakfast? Your mom's baking is brilliant, but I'm really in the mood for..." She grinned deviously. "Your dad told me about this diner you guys used to go to? He said he used to get this omelette... They would, um, grill a cheeseburger, and then stuff it in an omelette. They'd put it on a plate and dump chili overtop it and that sounds amazing right now. Do you think Siege could whip something like that up for me? Pretty please? I'll be your best friend!"

          NVAE (Martin)
Checking his phone, Martin found he had received a few new text messages. Gwen had texted him not long after his call to Rembrandt; her message was nothing more than a smiley face and a yellow heart. There were two messages from Sarah: "Hows tat" asked the first; "Lemme no if she needs ne thing" said the other. The last one was from a blocked number and simply read, "Is this Martin Curie?"

          NVAE (Otso; NPCs: Kowalski, Murphy)
The youth's father grew quiet. "Otso, your powers are... It's great that you're able to change back, but I think we should wait and see how long... I don't want you to lose hope, but it's... well, the situation in the States is bad, and if your powers..." The man sighed. "I'm making excuses. I... I ran away from home when I was just a little bit older than you, son. I haven't seen or spoken to my parents, Heather, Dwight..." Those were names Otso had never heard before. "Heather... She's my big sister, Otso--you're aunt. Dwight was--is--he is my baby brother. I..." The man shook his head. "Let's go talk over breakfast. There's a lot to tell you."

"I'll leave you both to it," Lex's dad said. "I should go tell Lillian that Lex and Kirstie are sleeping. She's been worried sick about them."

          "We'll meet up later."

Leaving Mister Murphy, Otso and his father headed for the cafeteria. They ordered their breakfast--enduring a cavalcade of questions over Otso's reverting back to a human along the way--and were soon sitting down at one of the tables in the corner. "Okay... First off, I'm sorry for never... telling you about my life before..." He threw his hands up in defeat. "I never liked to dwell on the past. It's not a happy story, but... here goes.

"I'm from this tiny little township in Virginia called Solaris. It's close to Charlottesville--a tiny town whose only draw is Monticello, a plantation owned by our third president, Thomas Jefferson. I'm not sure how much you know about him... Probably about as much as I did about Kaarlo Ståhlberg before I met your mother. Basically, he was the slave-owner who wrote 'all men are created equal'--not a good guy by any means. Anyway, it was small. Very, very small. I got my powers from my father, and he... he was always very secretive about them. He didn't use them. He didn't want us to use them. Dwight hadn't manifested, but Heather and I had. We weren't allowed to transform. Period.

"When I was about seventeen, I saw David on television, talking about this utopia he was going to build for us. I was so tired of hiding, and I... I wanted to be happy. I ran away from home and headed to New York. That was almost thirty years ago, Otso. Thirty years, and I've never looked back.

"I hear what you're saying: they could have been discovered--found out. They could have been taken into a camp. They could be in Canada, or on the run. If they are, though? What can we do? We could have them brought here, yes, but what then? I'm sorry to sound so selfish, but... what sort of a life do you imagine us having with them? Even if... Heather and Dwight started families of their own, they don't know us. They're our relatives, Otso--doesn't mean they're our family."

          NVAE: BRIG (Harry; NPCs: Blackguard)
When Harry stood up, Blackguard's face showed panic. "I'll look for another way--for Robert's sake, not yours--but don't hold your breath."

"Wait!" Blackguard snapped. "Siegfried! He told me he knew someone who could help me and Vik get back home! Just because your only lead's gone cold doesn't mean mine hasn't! Work with me! Maybe... maybe I can help you--I can show you where we... I might be able to get you to Siegfried! We make him spill, and maybe you and I can both get what we want. Hell, you and your Robert can be cuddlin' before you know it!"

          NVAE: HALLWAY (Jack; NPCs: Vlad)
Vlad looked at Jack with a deadpan expression. "It worries me to no end that Herta raises no alarms, but suggest teaming up with Lex and suddenly my sanity is called into question." The Romanian rolled his eyes. "Like I said: I think it would do us good to try and build a better relationship with him.

"We're not, I'm not-" He ran a hand through his blond locks. "Is it the hair?"

"Look, mun, I'll talk to the people in charge. But like I said, don't hold your breath. A lot of people upset about yesterday-proper unliked you are."

The blond boy (now considering a haircut), walked out of the room.

Leaving Larrikin by the computer, Kas went to find...who? Who did he know that he trusted with this? The Volunteers? It couldn't be Juozas. Juozas was the closest thing the team had to a leader when he wasn't around. Lexus? No. Lexus mutations were far too obvious for this sort of mission. Astrid? Definitely not. It was more than likely at some point he was going to have to save Larrikin from some ill-conceived action and compared to Astrid, Larrikin was the soul of restraint. Buddy? Yeah...that would be discreet. An Aussie, a blind man and a dwarf walk into a bar...it was like a bad joke searching for a punchline. Ellen? Nope. Just in case something ticked her off, he didn't want to have to fight a demonspawn...or whatever she turned into. Armand? No. This could go badly with the authorities and Armand had suffered enough. Let him spend some quality time with his girlfriend. Gaspar? What if his angst and guilt got the better of him again? He'd be as much a problem as Astrid. Kas had two more friends at the school, Jack and Harry. He hadn't talked to either since yesterday.

"I guess it's time to go look." It occured to Kas that for everything he'd done and all the time he'd been at the school, he didn't really know that many people and of those he knew, most were around him to earn some sort of redemption. He hung out with Harry because he felt a kinship with the British crimefighter because of the life they'd both chosen. he was friends with Jack because...because they'd travelled to another dimension together. Because Jack had his back when he needed it and he had Jack's. It wasn't exactly friendship, but it was something.

Suddenly a pain welled up in his chest. "Oh, Elizabeth I miss you."

Immediately he crushed that feeling. When Elizabeth returned, she would be younger...different...and into Harry. He really hoped he wasn't going to have to witness that. Just thinking about it felt like being stabbed in the chest. Giving himself an internal shake, he growled. "Business first Kas. You can get all maudlin when you die. Right now, find Jack or Harry."

yeah...I know he's not going to find Jack or Harry, but those are the options he can think of. Feel free to drop anyone appropriate on his head as he stalks the halls.

He made his way back outside, "Yeah, she's okay with seeing you."

He considers saying something more then shrugs and starts heading off, "Hey Martin, you heading for the cafeteria?"

Martin scowled at the inaccuracies of textual communications. Just what did a yellow heart mean? Apology accepted? Or did Gwen wish to infuse his cardiac organ with sulfur, gleefully?

He brushed the thought aside in his mind instead Replying to Sarah. He was glad to see the concern indicated by her texts.

~Headed back to her room shortly. She was asleep when I left. Going to grab her breakfast and bring it back.~

'See, complete words, was that so hard?' he thought to himself as he sent the text to the teen mother.

~How are you doing?~ He sends to the younger Nelson.

The last message concerned him. Certainly anyone with a school directory could get his phone number but it was not generally made public knowledge who was attending this school for reasons of anonymity. Still, there was little reason for subterfuge or beating around the bush - If someone had his cell number they could already get so much more.

~Yes. Who's this?~ he sent to the unknown number and resolved to pay closer attention to when he received texts.

"Hey Martin, you heading for the cafeteria?"
Martin nods and falls into step beside the American. When they were sufficiently separated from the adults Martin speaks again.

"As much as it pains me, I shall step back so zat Tatjana can choose whezer or not to continue receiving ze benefit of magical assistance wiz 'er affliction. Per'aps you can just let Kirstie know of ze option and let 'er decide?" The suggestion was gentle, subtle, and unpushed; he knew what it was like to watch someone struggling with something you couldn't help.

"Well, clearly I'm going to have to learn to watch where I'm walking but I'm okay otherwise." Violet deadpanned while looking up at the boy; the second one she'd walked into today (well it was almost with Mike). All things considered, there were worse people to walk into. "Are you new to the school? I don't think I've seen you around here before."

He ran a hand through his hair, and looked up at the roof, "I mean, we aren't talking about physical surgery where you can watch what they're doing, or follow it back to where they did what they were doing. There's no evidence of what they did and didn't do."

"And look at the only people we know who can do this stuff. Lacuna is nuts, Talla-whatnot just goes around whamming anybody she feels like, and what's left? The mages who threatened to blow up the mall and attacked our school repeatedly?"

He shook his head, "I couldn't trust them not to... do something. Add in little things that they wanted. Maybe turn them into allies, maybe institute a kill switch or, I don't know, some kind of crazy #$*%."

"And even if they don't, is it a one time thing? Do they need to do it regularly? What if they hold that over our heads?" H
e tried to stuff his hands in his pockets only to remember that his coat was decimated and the tattered remains were back in his room, "What if they withhold treatments to make us do what they want?"

"Having somebody like you at their beck and call would have to be tempting,"
He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably.

"Honestly?" He asked quietly, "The part that really scares me is that we'd be screwing with who they were. Not just fixing a broken thing, but literally changing the person."

"I... can't imagine the power to do that. Can you? The temptation to just pop in and change somebody when they don't do what you want, or when their ideals don't match yours,"
He bit his lip, "It'd be like learning a cheat code in a video game. The first time you do it, it's just that one time. But the next time it's easier and easier. I mean, why do anything the hard way when you can just push a few buttons and make it easy?"

"And all the people I've seen who have the power to mess with somebody's mind? They aren't good people."

"I just don't know that I'd want to risk Kirstie with that... Losing more of her than I already have..."

He sighed and looked at his feet feeling a little ashamed, "And I'm terrified if she was given the option... that she'd take it."

He waves a hand, quietly adding, "Yeah-yeah, I know, medication be benificial can have same results, but this isn't medication we're talking about. Medication can accidentally cause changes. What we're talking about, when it gets down to it, is intentionally taking somebody's free will away."

"That's some scary ass $*#), man. Even with them being for it and saying okay, and giving it a big thumbs up, it's some grade A scary ass $*#),"
He said, running a hand through his hair, "But it's even scarier when you consider who's doing it. Because we can't say if they'll stop when they should. What if they decide that the girls need to be more adventurous? Everything they do from that point on could be something they wouldn't have normally done. Maybe it wouldn't result in anything bad, maybe it'd make all sorts of bad mistakes that ruin their life. But either way it wasn't their choice. Somebody else made them do it."

"And that's just small stuff. That could be the mind controller trying to be 'helpful' and it could still 'cause trouble."

                                "I donno, Martin, I just- I don't know,"
He sighed, "Could it work? Yeah. Is it dangerous? Yeah. Do we have better options? I don't know."

He glanced over at Martin, "I... I really want Kirstie to be better, ya know? But this? Yeah, it might make her life better, but it's only a bandaid. We're not fixing the problem, we're just hiding from it. And..."

He sighed, "I'm too close to it. I just couldn't be sure that I was entirely doing it for her, ya know? What if I wanted this solution for me? What if every time I got a hug or a kiss or... whatever and... I'd never really know if it was her that wanted to do it, or if she was forced to do it."

"I wouldn't know if I saved her, or if I was just another scumbag who drugged a girl for his own means."

He looked over at Martin, "There's really no right answer here. Tons of maybes and ifs, but... No real answers."

"All I can say is that I don't trust the people we know who could do it. And I wouldn't risk somebody I loved with them,"
He shrugged helplessly, "I don't know if it's right or wrong, it's just how I feel."
