    Violet Lear
    HP: 1

Violet thought back on her impossibly eventful day. "I stopped a wizard from kidnapping Mario Tharivol, saved Beatrice's life after Tallemaja attacked her, helped chase Skew away from Schönbrunn Palace and then we stopped Ogre, Skew and Robor at PRATER." She let out an exaggerated sigh. "But I'm sure you worked hard watching Lex and Martin capture Cleave."

Wow, when I lay it out like that, Violet did a lot more than I realized

Kas curled his lip in a sneer at Larrikin's being his apologist. "Strewth, I can and do blame myself. Some people were killed and injured before I reacted, but I was the first one not the subject of an ambush to engage the mages and I failed. Then, everyone...nearly everyone... went with my response plan and too many of those responders ended up at the wrong location. Skew would have been easy for the right person to deal with. He deflects attacks he can see, but we have people here who could deprive him of his line of sight or could attack a large enough area that his power might not succeed."

"The Vitesse brothers were more than a match for Rose and me, in fact we may very well be accounted among the fallen if not for the arrival of that french hero, Durendal. I don't get a free pass simply because the enemy was nutters. Somebody is responsible for our poorly coordinated response...and that someone is me."

Absently tapping his fingers against his helmet, Kas finishes. "Somebody is always responsible for failure Larrikin. In this case, it's me. My only response, since I survived is to humbly beg the forgiveness of the people I failed...and try harder."

It does not necessarily have to be Tallemaja, however. Gwen is an enchantress, and such a spell is in my purview as well.

"As for your sister... well..." Rembrandt sighed. "It is within my power to cast a spell to locate her, another to teleport myself there, who knows how many to incapacitate her, and then one more to bring us both back to this place." He turned to the table behind them and retrieved a photo of Martin's sister--one taken for her student ID. "The trouble is, I was looking at this picture and thinking of Gabrielle Curie, and the most curious thing happened, Martin: nothing. Nothing happened. My spell fizzled. It found nothing.

"I can fathom only two reasons why that would happen: either your sister is somehow being shielded by my attempts to locate her, or she does not actually exist."
Martin shows no reaction to the news. "You've never tried to imagine someone possessed by Lacuna, perhaps her identity is fundamentally subsumed or altered. Or you've never tried to teleport to a Curie, perhaps being spawned rather than birthed interferes with our individuality on a metaphysical level." Martin shrugs.

"As to Gwen and her magic, please understand that I would prefer that if there is a replicable, reliable source of treatment for Tatjana - medicines, even if an incomplete treatment are better than a temporary fix reliant on one source. It is not that I distrust Gwen or her motivations, it is that she possesses motivations where medications and science possess no such things. No offense meant." Martin says.

He looks back to Rembrandt. "Do you really think you could subdue Elle-Lacuna on your own? What if Tallemaja were there? That was a bold plan." The French teen admits.

"I need your guidance," he said. "Tallemaja didn't leave much of a trail, but if I pursue this other course, surely that trail will grow cold. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?"
Jack sighed. Mostly because he understood the frustration his friend was feeling: on one hand he wanted to deal with the fallout of his actions of the last year but he still wanted to finish his "quest" to end the threat of Laputna. "Honestly I don't think we, and that means anyone at the school - teacher or student, could find Tallemaja and the rest of her boot-lickers if they don't want to be found."

"Until then, and I hate to say this, we have to take care of the other craziness of our lives. So if it were me I'd take care of the "family issues" before anything else and be sure it'll never be a problem again."

Gwyn harrumphed quietly. Cecil was a ponce's name. Still...

"This is a lot to chew on, ya. I better leave to it, so you can brief the others. Anything you need to me to do, Headmaster, just say so." The blue eyed boy looked at Robert Crawford/Blackguard through the glass. He wanted to talk to him, if only to learn more about the world he came from, but he figured that wasn't a good idea.

"Wow," Lena said as Violet gave a synopsis of the previous day, "you're, like, amazing." While it may have sounded sarcastic, her eyes were wide from awe after hearing the role Violet had played. "Man, you two really make me look bad... I mean, while all this was going on, I was holed up with most of the other students. I tried to tell myself that I couldn't help out there--that I was too young--but you guys are the same age as me, and... wow..."

Rose couldn't stop glaring at her friend.

                NVAE: INFIRMARY (Lex; NPCs: Kirstie)
"I know," Kirstie said, "and that's what scares me..."

NVAE: BOYS' DORMS (Kas; NPCs: Larrikin)
"Okay, well... let's look at it like this: I could have stopped the speedsters, right? Why didn't you send me there, then?"

NVAE: LIBRARY (Martin; NPCs: Gwen, Jason, Rembrandt)
"You've never tried to imagine someone possessed by Lacuna," Martin argued. "Perhaps her identity is fundamentally subsumed or altered."

"Jason explained to me that Lacuna's real name is Elizabeth Lamperouge. Even concentrating on her psyche yielded no results."

"Or you've never tried to locate a Curie, perhaps being spawned rather than birthed interferes with our individuality on a metaphysical level?"

"Except that I have," Rembrandt said. "I was able to locate you with the same spell, and discern you were in the girls' dormitory. I am telling you, Martin: I accounted for several factors."

Martin shrugged. "As to Gwen and her magic," he said, moving to change the subject, "please understand zat I would prefer zat if zere is a replicable, reliable source of treatment for Tatjana: medicines, even if an incomplete treatment are better zan a temporary fix reliant on one source. It is not zat I distrust Gwen or her motivations; it is zat she possesses motivations where medications and science possess no such zings. No offense meant."

"I'm the middle child," Gwen said. By the look on her face, she looked to have taken offense. "The second of three girls. My little sister had some mental health issues... Her doctor put her on pills--those pills made things worse. So, they altered the dosage. They took her off some, put her on others. She was always sick. They had to adjust her meds again, and then she got dark--really dark. They added a pill to account for the new side effects, and then she jumped off the..." Gwen choked up as she thought about her sister. "You said you want a reliable source of treatment," she said. "Good luck finding one."

She started towards the door. "C'mon, Remy. Like he said: it's all he can do to keep from slamming his fists into the table and wishing to never have to deal with us again. We're not welcome here."

Rembrandt looked to Jason. "I know," the American said before nodding curtly. "I will."

"Thank you," Rembrandt said. "Martin, I am sorry things worked out as they did." The man in the hardy hat bowed before following Gwen out.

"Do you really zink you could subdue Elle-Lacuna on your own?" Martin asked. "What if Tallemaja were zere? Zat was a bold plan."

"William of Tewkesbury," Rembrandt said, "was a man who fought in the War of the Roses. He lost his life in the Battle of Barnet--one of the most decisive battles of the war. The events of that conflict led to fourteen years of Yorkist rule. It's sad, actually: he was no stranger to the battlefield. He was a great supporter of Edward, and he came so far, just to lose his life when victory was finally within reach.

"William was a magus, much like myself." Rembrandt raised his arm and revealed a leather bracer lashed to his arm. "William was also an inventor, and this little trinket served him well, Martin. This protected him from harm and saved his skin time and again. Would it have saved me? Or would fighting Tallemaja become my Battle of Barnet?" He shrugged. "Who can tell?"

Rembrandt turned and left the library.

                NVAE: HALLWAY (Jack; NPCs: Vlad)
"Then I must deal with this post haste. The Vindicators and many of your classmates are busy picking up the pieces after yesterday's catastrophe. Perhaps it would be selfish of me to even suggest this, but... would you be able to accompany me?

"When I left home half a year ago, there were others still there... Iosef and Ilena. I suspect there may be two others, though: he brought Ilena in after Vasile left; when Adela left, he brought in Herta... which brings me to the hard part: I think we need Herta's help on this one."

NVAE: BRIG (Harry; NPCs: Emily, Newton)
"Actually, Harry, I was going to ask if there is anything I could do for you."

The Welsh teen saw Emily eyeing him knowingly. She could read minds--had she discerned what he had come here for?

"What do you zink ze fact zat magics could not locate Elle means?"

Jason absentmindedly touched his pendant through his shirt. "Here's what I know: Tallemaja has Lacuna's full cooperation; Tallemaja is a very powerful Neo-Sapien who is capable of altering her physiology in startling ways--the threshold of which we have yet to realize; Tallemaja is a magus whose gift is grounded in mind-altering magics; Rembrandt is a very experienced wizard who knows the upper limits of his spells, and postulates that there are two reasons he would be unable to locate Elle...

"The first one is that Elle is being shielded by a ward. We believe that Tallemaja is incapable of casting the sort of spells that would protect Elle from scrying. It is likely Elle was secretly taunt to wield arcana, and is an abjurer. It is possible that there is a abjurer working with them--a new player whose existence we are unaware of. There is a very complicated possibility... Gwen is an enchanter; I am a necromancer. She cannot cast any of the spells I know, nor can I duplicate the effects she evokes. Rembrandt, however, is descended from the original Aurelius. His pedigree lets him eschew this restriction all other mages are forced to live under. I will not rule out the possibility that, if Tallemaja were to shapeshift into someone like Rembrandt, she could overcome this hurdle, and cast spells other than enchantments. I will even concede that this seems like something she would do: she was content to pose as Mary, who could only morph her appearance, rather than let us know how frighteningly powerful she actually was. I would not put it past her to permit us to mistakenly believe that she is simply an enchanter when, in truth, she may very well be capable of... anything.

"However, what you did not allow Rembrandt to tell you was that he was able to locate Tallemaja. She's in London. Why, if she is capable of shielding Elle from that spell, would she choose not to shield herself?

"It is safe to conjecture then that Elle is not being magically shielded from Rembrandt's spells, which leads us to one other option: Elle does not exist."

Martin nods. "When Rembrandt mentioned zat possibility I started trying to recall why I believe in Elle as an individual. Simply put, I was introduced to 'er as such by my parents and I possess memories of our time togezer as brozer and sister. She seemed to be a unique entity and I always regarded 'er as such. Trouble wiz zat is two-fold: 1) where Entier is concerned perceptions of identity can be falsified. Age and Gender are fluid concepts. Even individuality is mutable. 'Oo knows if Elle was imbued wiz enough independence to 'count' as a person unto 'erself. It seemed so but..." Martin shrugs. He cast his memory back to his mothers words...

"Lacuna did not strip her, Martin. Elle's powers manifested long before yours. It's been a chore convincing her to not use her abilities but..." The woman rolled her eyes. "Didn't you ever wonder why she was home-schooled while you were sent to school? Ze way Elle can detect and analyze the pheromones we secret when we're excited? Creating clothes from scratch? Her malleable body? Her ability to emit a beam of vibrating molecules zat shreds zrough matter? Martin, zese are zings Elle has been able to do since she was a small child. Your fazer and I have worked with her to not... exhibit them. We knew how her abilities worked because zey are abilities we poses. Zat is how Lacuna was so practiced, Martin."

She had been describing innovation and independence - hard to believe those came from something not sentient enough to count as an individual. But the nature of Martin's life was changing all the time.

"Two, is zat my memories of my life could be false. In ze memories I retain from my parents zere are instances of my 17th birzday. Since Precognition is not part of ze Curie repertoire I can only infer zat MY memories 'ave undergone modifications. Eizer zat or I originally 'ad a prototype 'oo existed for longer zan I was before being reabsorbed into ze collective of Entier. Zey talk about about 'Mama boys' 'oo desire to 'crawl back up zeir mozer's skirts'. Well, zat is an actual possibility wiz ze Curie's. Or it was until 'er destruction, anyway."

Martin considered. "I can tell my fazer was a different entity because 'is psyche was separate from 'ers when I absorbed zem into my mind and zey subsequently tried taking over. But Elle, I do not know."

Martin recalled what his sister had to say on the subject:

Elle gave her brother a confused look. <<"I am a fraction,">> she said, as if that explained everything.
"Yes, you were divided from Entier, just as I.. Martin was. But we were given individuality. We weren't part of Entier - a combined Jeannette and Basil. You... didn't merge wiz zem did you?" Martin asks, concerned.
Elle giggled. <<”I can’t merge with them. You know that.”>>

Had she been lying, or did he misinterpret something in that conversation? Given the way she'd called him Mommy after he'd absorbed his parents.... none of it made sense.

"I 'ave no clues on ze nature of my existence except zat ze original of us was an experiment by Dr. Noah Meinstein, unless zat was a lie as well. I still 'ope to check zat out one day." Martin says.
