Otso breathed out a deep sigh now that they were out of the infirmary. "Better. Well, everything considered, at least. Martin healed her afterwards, but..." He looked down at his fur-covered hands as he continued forward. "I mean, here she is, in the infirmary again and I can't help wondering if it's my fault. If it's dangerous for her to be around me. I mean, what good am I if I can't even protect the girl I love?"

      [Jack Rexroth]
      HP: 1

Vlad opened his arms and pulled his friend into a hug. "I'm glad to hear that," he said. "I don't suspect many will be happy with this prodigal son's return.
Jack gave his friend three firm pats on the back before ending the embrace with a smirk. "Like I ever worry about what others think."

"I, uh... I could use your advice, Jack. I am standing at a fork in the road. My choices seem so easy, I'm sure: stay or go. Tallemaja is still out there, and I fear she may try to resurrect Laputa. I have no leads on her, but I could go out and try to stop whatever insane plot she comes up with next... or I could stay here at the school." He sighed. "If I stay, I'll likely be turned over to the proper authorities for the role I played in what happened last autumn. Given that I have effectively been on the lam all this time, I do not expect to get the same leniency Herta and the others were graced with.

"I suppose that is the real reason I've come to you: if I am bound for shackles, there is unfinished business I should tend to, and while I would be loathe to drag you into my personal problems, there are few I trust as much as you, Jack.
"Doesn't sound like you need my advice, sounds like you've already made up your mind."

"You've heard about the monster who rampaged in Prater? Ogre? Her real name is Adela, and she is my older sister."
Jack nodded. Vlad had mentioned how his "father" had taken in a number of NS kids and trained them in how to use their powers. Vlad had also mentioned that several of them had issues of their own, as in they weren't as moral as he himself was. "Alright, what do you need me to do?"

        Kas sat bolt upright. "Agnes!"

Agnes wasn't there though. Instead the colorful vistas revealed by sight were gone and his brain registered planes and angles and material density and subtle topographical variations that made every object unique. In its own way, what he perceived was fascinating and beautiful...but it didn't hold a candle to sight.

"Agnes. Agnes Gareth." He repeated to himself. Despite the fact he'd been dreaming, he was certain this girl was real. Real and in real trouble.

Dragging himself out of bed, he grabbed a towel and headed for the showers. First things first. He still stank of sweat and violence and was covered in dust and other filth from the previous days' disaster. As the hot water ran over his body, he tried to organize his thoughts. Agnes was obviously the priority, but he had alot to attend to. He needed his list of every identified victim of yesterdays' attack and the contact information for their families. He had failed on a massive scale and every one of those people needed to be apologized for...their loved ones apologized to. He needed to speak to his mother about Pandora. For all that they were criminals and terrorists, the Vitesse brothers made valid points about the secret prison for SPB's. There were a number of individuals involved in the attacks that had escaped. That was unacceptable. Just as with that terrorist warlord in Africa, they needed to be dealt with.

Once back in his room, he sighed as he picked out his last clean uniform. Why he even bothered with regular clothes anymore, he wasn't sure. He never wore them. Maybe he should just donate everything lacking a "V" symbol on it to charity. How did Harry make this all look so...easy? Maybe he could ask him for some tips.

Once in uniform, he tucked his helmet under his arm and headed toward the office. Dr. Yavorshak first. He needed to make certain he got that list of deceased victims and next of kin. After that Mr. Manual. The easiest way to track down Agnes Gareth was going to be via computer.

It promised to be another busy day of falling behind on his schoolwork. When papa saw his grades Kas was goning to die...and not all the superhuman abilities in the world would save him. Fantastich.

That made sense, in a confusing, wibbly wobbly sort of way. "Fair enuff, I guess. After all, it turned out well enough. We stopped a war and everything. Although..." Gwyn remembered what had happened on their trip back.

"On our way back, we left the world we had come to but arrived in a third dimension, before we got to this one. It was...dead. It might mean nothing for us, and be something for Lamperouge to deal with, but I thought I should mention it."

That whole time period-a week or a few days, whichever-was still perhaps the most confusing time in young Gwyn's life, more confusing than waking up in heatless flames or battling wizards, or seeing a woman who could control the dead.

NVAE, SUBLEVEL: INFIRMARY (Lex; NPCs: Kirstie)
Kirstie shook her head. "I don't want to see you get hurt," the blonde said. "I just... I wish I knew how to get this under control, you know? I don't know what to do..."

NVAE, SUBLEVEL: HALLWAY (Otso; NPCs: Kowalski, Murphy)
Otso's dad rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "I always taught you to never raise your fists in anger, right? 'The only reason a man should fight is to protect something dear to him'? But I..." He sighed. "I know we've never really talked about this, but... she--Stephanie, I mean... She said she told you about Linda--her mom... My first wife."

The man shifted uncomfortably. Indeed, Otso had never known about his father's old life--the life he lived before he showed up in Finland decades ago. "It's been over twenty years since Linda died, Otso... and I didn't find out about it until a few months back. And then your mom... I loved Anna so very much, Otso--I loved the both of you--and I wasn't there to protect her either.

"What would you say to me if I was talkin' the way you're talkin' right now? If I told you that I wondered if it was my fault that Linda died--my fault that Anna died. I know the circumstances are much different, son, but... what if I told you that I blamed myself? What would you say to me?"

NVAE, BOYS' DORMS: HALLWAY (Jack; NPCs: Vlad)
"Doesn't sound like you need my advice. Sounds like you've already made up your mind."

Vlad shrugged his shoulders in defeat. "I have been doing my best Ahab impression," he said. "I have been so... obsessed with bringing down whatever was left of Laputa, Jack... I was hunting this white whale, and I was oblivious to everything else... Herta I could have excused--she's as ambitious as she is arrogant. That she would leave home and seek her own destiny does not surprise me... but after seeing Adela and the carnage she created? I'm left to wonder if Herta's actions aren't the result my father sought. If that is the case, then I am the only one aware of what Radu actually is... If I leave to pursue Tallemaja, will my father's machinations go unchecked?"

Jack nodded as he listened. "Alright, what do you need me to do?"

"I need your guidance," he said. "Tallemaja didn't leave much of a trail, but if I pursue this other course, surely that trail will grow cold. If you were in my shoes, what would you do?"

NVAE, BOYS' DORMS: HALLWAY (Kas; NPCs: Doug, Larrikin, Lexus, Mouloud)
Before he even opened his door, he could sense the boy pacing outside it: the Australian boy was a year under Kas, and had been present at the battle months ago, when Kas fought off Jack's father and Vlad's sister. Larrikin was a shameless flirt who had begun hitting on Astrid. His lude comments only served to make the girl uncomfortable, prompting Juozas to threaten the boy if he so much as thought an immoral thought about her again.

            He looked unnaturally somber.

"Kas!" he exclaimed when the door opened. "Hey, I... I was..." He gulped. "Is there any... I mean..."

The door to the dorms opened: Lexus was returning with two of the freshmen: he had gone to coordinate a search and rescue at Prater, using the experience he'd gained working under Kas in the Volunteers with the freshmen who volunteered their gifts. According to his briefing, Doug had provided them with an aerial view while Mouloud's super-strength did the rest.

At the sight of them, Larrikin tensed. "Can we talk? I mean, like... can we go somewhere or something?"

NVAE, SUBLEVEL: BRIG (Harry; NPCs: Emily, Newton)
Newton looked perplexed by Harry's revelation, but filed it away. "Thank you," he said earnestly. "I must admit, I'm a little perplexed by all of these revelations--the existence of parallel universes, time travel, and such... If just the burden of knowledge leaves me baffled, I can't imagine what you must be feeling having seen another world--meeting another version of yourself... If you find yourself needing to get anything off your chest, Harry, my door is open. I imagine the same holds true for Doctor Yavorshak, Mister McClanahan, Miss Catargi...

He used to have someone to talk to. His name was Robert, and Gwyn has come here-months ago-to find him.

"I'll keep that in mind." For all his talk, looking at Blackguard-another Robert Crawford-did funny things to his stomach.

"There's something else. During the fighting yesterday, Randy's da, Robor, he said something I figger was supposed to be scary. But it was mostly just confusing"

Gwyn related what the plant man said, about him being a child of Leviathan, and the person who might be coming for him.

"Does any of that catch, Headmaster?"

Kas turned his unseeing eyes on Larrikin fully intent on giving the Australian underclassman the brush off. He had important things to do and only so much time to do it in. Something in his friend's posture and manner caused him to bite back his impatience.

Yes, we can talk Larrikin, but it will have to be on the move. Yesterday was an awful day. I got my ass kicked and made some regrettable tactical decisions and today I have to start working on reversing as much of the damage as I can."

"To that end, I have to speak with Dr. Yavorshak or Headmistress Fischer. We can speak on the way."

Then he stepped forward on his way. He needed to find Agnes and his classmate was likely going to insist on being an impediment.

"Does any of that catch, Headmaster?"

Newton was pensive for a moment before answering: "Has anyone ever told you the exact nature of your abilities, Harry?" the man asked.

NVAE: CAFETERIA (Violet; NPCs: Kelly, Lena, Rose)
"Didn't even go to the hospital first."

Rose glared at Violet's back. "No, I didn't," she spat. "Before I went to the hospital, I was freeing hostages. Refresh me on what purpose you were serving again?"

NVAE: BOYS' DORMS (Kas; NPCs: Doug, Larrikin, Lexus, Mouloud)
As they started walking, Mouloud reached to open his door, only for the door knob to come off in his hand. Larrikin wasn't himself: he had no pithy comment about the local craftsmanship--no jab at Mouloud's expense. Whatever was eating at him seemed to render him completely oblivious to the misfortune the Algerian boy had just experienced.

Once they pair were outside, Larrikin took a deep breath. "I'm the reason the bad guys got away," he admitted. "Violet and the others had the big monster girl on the ropes, and the Irish houseplant grabbed me and threatened to kill me 'less they all got to walk. I... I'm not so stupid as to think it wouldn't have happened if I wasn't there: if it wasn't me, it would have been someone else... but anyone of the others could have gotten out of that easy, you know?

"Martin said these people knew us, right? They'd been watching us for weeks? What if he targeted me because he knew I was the weakest one there? I mean, Violet's a human esky, and Anne's got a bloody cannon in her arm; Ellen and Harry both have those flamin' swords... Anyone of them wouldn't have let themselves get nipped, but me?

"D... do you think you could help me not..." A sigh escaped his lips. "Not be such a bludger? I mean, not that I want this sort of thing to happen again, but... if it does... I don't want to be a bloody liability, mate." He finally made himself look at Kas. "Please, can you help me?"

                      NVAE: INFIRMARY (Lex; NPCs: Kirstie)
Kirstie frowned. "How long do you think Matt's had to figure out his powers, and he still can't touch anything without causing mold to grow over it?" Tears started to form in her eyes. "You should just break up with me: no sense in being with a girl you can't touch."

Gwyn shrugged. "Not in one big chunk. But I've put together the pieces from what various people have told me. Story goes there are demons-fallen angels, whatever. They sleep with humans. The child is like me. Then little ones I might have have the potential to possess a small part of my powers. In my case, it'd be my ability to burn others, weaken their bodies, minds, and wills."

He conjured up those flames now-they were similar to the stuff his claymore was made from but also noticeably, if subtly, different. A darker shade of blue, writhing not like fire but like a thing alive. Damn painful to use, though he'd been getting better at that.

"With Robert, it'd be his ability to see through most things. That's the story. But whose to say we're not just a sub-breed of normal Neos," Gwyn tried not to say Neo Sapien because it didn't actually mean what people used it for. Neo Homos would be more accurate.

"And all the demon stuff is just legends and myths, exaggerations of our abilities?" And what did that have to do with summat called Domingo?

Kas ran his free hand over his face, the glove on his insulated suit smelling just a little like neoprene, and restrained the sigh he wanted to let out over Larrikin's request.

"You realize what happened to you yesterday was my fault, right? Your defeat, Lex's injuries, my own defeat by the Vitesse brothers...all my fault. My poor tactical assessment brought down disaster, no one else's. If I'd sent you and Lex where I went, the mission would likely have been a success. Against an elemental who doesn't need his sight or against me, sure you're at a distinct disadvantage. Against a couple speedsters who use sight to guide them as they careen around the battlefield, your ability to change how the topography appears is wickedly effective."

Shrugging, he continued; "I just don't see what I could teach you? I suppose I could tell you to do the opposite of what I do...that might work from a general perspective, but I can't see how your powers function, so it's difficult for me to give advise on their use and I suck at hand to hand combat. You didn't get to see how badly I embarrassed myself trying to take one of those mages on hand to hand, but it was a pretty spectacular failure."

Brow furrowing in self-directed anger, Kas gritted his teeth and forced himself to finish. "People died because I screwed up. A great number of people died. People died and Vienna suffered massive amounts of property damage...after I promised I would protect them."

"Exactly what could I teach you that you really want to learn?"

Gwen is an enchantress, and such a spell is in my purview as well.

"As for your sister... well..." Rembrandt sighed. "It is within my power to cast a spell to locate her, another to teleport myself there, who knows how many to incapacitate her, and then one more to bring us both back to this place." He turned to the table behind them and retrieved a photo of Martin's sister--one taken for her student ID. "The trouble is, I was looking at this picture and thinking of Gabrielle Curie, and the most curious thing happened, Martin: nothing. Nothing happened. My spell fizzled. It found nothing.

"I can fathom only two reasons why that would happen: either your sister is somehow being shielded by my attempts to locate her, or she does not actually exist."

"People died because I screwed up. A great number of people died. People died and Vienna suffered massive amounts of property damage...after I promised I would protect them."

"Strewth, you really believe that?" Larrikin asked, stopping dead in his tracks. "People were dying before you made a single call, mate. Lex took off out of here like a bat out of hell, and that whack job with the swords had already killed how many people at the hospital? People didn't die because you screwed up: they died because some people are just nutters.

"I mean, what? You think you can be everywhere at once? You can know the future?" Larrikin shrugged. "You didn't screw up, mate."
