  • Re: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #18: Decompress

He watched her sleep. She'd had a trying day. The tears that were still drying on his chest where her face had been pressed to it for hours could attest to that.

It was after he set her broken finger, molecularly mending bone and restoring traumatized tissue, after he told her how they didn't give up on recovering her, after he told her he loved her.... that she cried.

It was the first sign of Tallemaja's spell wearing off. The first sign that they were in for the dark days once again. Weeks of medication balancing and side effects, treating symptoms of her mood disorder, but never having an impact on its source.

Gwen was here though, and she knew the same spell Tallemaja did, maybe she could... Martin pursed his lips angrily. NO! No more spells. With drug treatment at least there was no singular source. Sure, Martin would be crafting them initially, but it didn't rely on his talents. Any psychopharmacologist could prescribe the same thing and he would continue work with the school's therapist. It was science, not a magic cureall. It worked with the body's systems of nuerotransmitters and chemical uptake thresholds, not impose a reality-altering matrix on someone.

That was no better than the mind raping Tallemaja did on the many students, no better than what Lacuna was doing to Elle... again(!).

He came once again to thoughts of his sister. He felt renewed anger for the Laputa operative and an irrational sense of betrayal. He knew it was irrational, she'd dealt with him truthfully that he could determine - a legitimate plan for thwarting the attackers of Vienna. Healing Beatrice even after she failed to get her... magic apple, was it? It was the part where she gave Elle over to being a thrall of that Mind Virus that irked Martin so very much. Sure, Elle was more her mother's daughter than anything else and if Elle had chosen to go with Tallemaja of her own free will, Martin would have been saddened but accepting. The tune of 'Cat's in the Cradle' came unbidden to him at that moment. He'd sung of this very fear under the mad magic midget's curse.

He shook his head to clear the thoughts. Elle was gone, and truth be told, he didn't know if she would have left anyway. She seemed to *want* to be a minion in someone's plot to change the world, and Martin couldn't offer her that. He just wasn't looking forward to their next confrontation.

On the topic of matters he possibly *could* do something about - Kirstie. Martin knew the next thing he wanted to try, something he thought likely to work now that's had time to consider it. Going off the idea that she could apply bandages to herself the idea was simple - Martin would shift into a form of an object, Kirstie should remain unaware of the fact that it was him and Kirstie should touch the Martin-object to her injuries. He didn't know what deep psychological issue kept Kirstie feeling like she shouldn't be touched or close to anyone but clearly this was another instance of subconscious trauma interfering with powers. Thoughts of Gaspar came to mind as one similarly afflicted.

He'd suggest that as a next course of action to Lex and the school doctor.

Martin went back to staring at Tatjana while she slept, glad to have her back. When she woke he'd suggest they go to breakfast, maybe catch up with the others on what they experienced in the preceeding day's events.

      Violet Lear
      HP: 1

After a trying day, Violet was exhausted. She didn't even talk to any of her friends before collapsing in her room. If days like today were what it meant to be a Vindicator, she knew that that "career" path held no future for her. Who could deal with that kind of stress over and over again without cracking? That was her last thought before drifting off to sleep.

In the morning, Violet woke feeling almost hung over; at least how she imagined it felt. Fortunately, a long shower cleared her head. She dressed and went for breakfast, hoping for a little normalcy. Siege was disappointed when she ordered simple toast and jam but it was a comfortable breakfast for her. She sat down to eat quietly and took her time, casually watching the other students as they arrived.

        The Blue Knight

He was just supposed to find another kid, some Spanish guy who could make it rain, and might be in trouble. Jaw with him, bring him back to the school. Then there was a girl from another world, and a man with his face-burned and ugly. They'd come back after a day and night that had been a week. And then he'd gotten his arse kicked by a karate wizard. And something else...

Gwyn had lost control. Like Ellen almost had. Like Paladin had always warned him about. Luckily, he hadn't killed anybody, but he might've. It was a bleedin miracle he hadn't stepped on the Irish faerie. And then monster girl had gotten away with that Cockney twit. It had been a trying few days. Week, whatevs.

When he woke up, he scribbled a few things down in his notebook, Ogre-real name Adela, powered by heat/light, weakened by cold. Robor, Randy's dad. With this school, Gwyn needed a relationship web. He had one, drawn up on posterboard with black marker. He worked on that a little, making connections between Randy and his da, along with names of all the other criminals they'd faced. In his notebook he wrote "Domingo" with a question mark and the words "Coming for me" beside it. He'd fought super villains before, but none of them had seemed to want to personally kill him. Brave new world.

Gwyn missed his ma. He missed Wales. He missed his old friends. He missed Robert. Remembering, he looked at the mess that had been made of his sunglasses. He missed his shades. He had another pair, wraparounds. He didn't need them here-everyone knew about his powers, after all, but they were part of his look.

Donning a white crewneck, dark jeans and a blue hooded sweatshirt, he tucked his shades in around the neck of his shirt. Then he went to get something to eat. He wanted to talk to Blackguard, but he didn't know if they would let him. Still, he had a lot of questions for the doppleganger.

          [Jack Rexroth]
          HP: 1

Jack had spent hours helping to locate the victims of the freak storm, and given the fact he could make it so that he could sniff them out combined with enough muscle to move a respectable amount of debris ended up with him working mostly by himself; which worked out in his opinion as by that point Jack was not good company.

One of the emergency responders had given him some flags with an adhesive bottom so that he could mark spots where the dead were buried under rubble, so that they could be removed after the living had been tended to. Looking behind him, the American frowned as the number of flags was easily in the double digits and was still likely to increase but he consoled himself with the idea that he and Blackguard were going to have a nice long talk.

It was during one of the few breaks he took to clear his senses of all the excess of scents he experienced that he realized he’d been going non-stop almost the entire day on the back of doing something similar only two days earlier.

          No wonder he was tired.

Hours later, and with the smell of death firmly locked into his brain, the tattooed American started to head back to the school but found he didn’t have enough mental focus to form the draconic wings he now favored for flight, not that he didn’t try mind you, but he’d get about as far as making the skeleton of the wings and was trying to grow the leathery membrane when he’d lose it. And after the third failure Jack gave up, lit a cigarette and started walking in the general direction of the school even though he knew it would take him over an hour.

When Jack woke up the next morning he found a folded up note had been slide under his door, hell he’d stepped on it but after reading it he folded it back up then tossed it on his desk and resumed his trek for the locker room. After a long, warm shower Jack returned to his room where changed from the black sweatpants and matching t-shirt he kept spare in his locker into street clothes so he could try and grab some food before meeting with Mr. McClanahan liked he'd asked in the note.

            Ursa
            HP: 1

Otso woke up in the infirmary, slumped with his back against the wall as he didn't trust the chairs to hold his increased mass. He groggily looked down at himself and last days events slowly trickled into his awakening mind. After the fighting had stopped he'd helped with the rescue efforts, offering both his sense of smell and considerable strength to aid the rescue services. The same strength meant he'd been anxious about using his first aid knowledge in all but the most dire of circumstances. Sadly, there had been more than a few of those yesterday.

At some point he barely remembered, he'd trudged back to the school, being turned away at the door of the infirmary by Doctor Talley after a curt medical examination. Otso had slowly made his way up to the showers, doing his best to rid himself of the smells of the days grim work that seemed to clung to him no matter how hard he scrubbed. Afterwards, he returned to the then less over-taxed infirmary to sit by Beatrice's bedside. That was where he now found himself after his brain had traced back his steps in the last twentyfour hours. Otso looked at Beatrice asleep in her bed, his heart aching and his brain at a loss as to what to do.

              KAS
There was little as cruel as Kas' dreams. Kas hadn't been born blind. Once upon a time, he had been able to see, and the memory of what was now denied him haunted him each and every night.

Never again would he see his favorite color. His sister's freckles were forever denied to him. He'd never again be able to see the white streak in the family dog's fur.

Last night, Armand had been telling him about a movie Venefica had made him watch: Rashomon. Not only was it supposed to be one of Akira Kurosawa's greatest films, it was widely regarded as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of the last sixty years. Armand complained about the subtitles--"She expected me to spend our date night reading," the American boy had said. "I started to wonder if I'd done something piss her off." It only served to remind Kas that unless he was willing to learn Japanese, he might never be able to enjoy the film.

In his dreams, the things he could never ever again experience taunted him. Tonight, his sisters were brushing llamas--llamas whose fur they had dyed different colors. One was a rich blue; another was lime green; one sported a deep burgundy backside while it's legs were puce.

As the girls offered to dye his hair too, the floor began to crack. It bulged a little, and Kas realized something was trying to break through. A moment later, the floor gave way and a girl's face appeared. "A little help here?" she asked.

Once she was through the floor, Kas got a good look at her. She couldn't have been much younger than he was--maybe fourteen or fifteen, judging by her appearance. She was skinny and pale. Her hair was a reddish brown. Her clothes were in tatters. "Are you Magnitude?" There was a sense of urgency in her tone. She glanced back at the hole she'd been pulled through with a worried expression on her face. "I don't know how much time I have... You've got to help me.

"My name is Agnes Gareth and I can enter people's dreams. Please, Magnitude... You have to help me."

              LEX
When Lex woke up, he found a blanket draped around him and his girlfriend talking quietly on her phone. "I gotta go: Lex is waking up, daddy. Yes, I'll see you soon. Okay, I love you, too."

Hanging up, Kirstie smiled at the boy. "Good morning," she said. She reached over to her bedside table and reached into a baking pan. "Your mother makes excellent monkey bread. Want some?"

              MARTIN
"Martin," said Gwen's disembodied voice, "have you a second? Remy wants to talk. We'll be in the library."

              VIOLET
As she raised her toast to her mouth, she heard Rose enter the refectory. "-had to save the others by tangling up the swords with my vines," the Italian girl was telling friends, Kelly and Lena. "Martin said that there would have been more casualties if it hadn't been for my help." She paused behind Violet, as though she wanted to be sure the English girl heard the rest of her story. "Best of all, we were able to catch Cleave. Do you know that most of the people who attacked the city got away? My group was one of the few who actually managed to bring their opponent in."

              HARRY
In the sublevel, Harry found Anne posted outside the doors to the Wreck Room. "Hello, Harry," she said. "My father has been expecting you."

She led him inside a dark room. Newton and Emily Adler's silhouettes were outlined by the light shinning through a pair of windows across from the door. It was like a scene out of a procedural cop show: on the other side of the two-way mirror sat Blackguard and Caballero—in separate interrogation rooms—shackled to their chairs.

"Good morning, Mister Percy," Newton said. He sounded tired—not surprising, giving the night they all had had. Factor in that Newton had been incapacitated by Tallemaja for most of yesterday, causing him to miss out on all of the excitement, and it was almost sinful that he should appear so ragged. "First and foremost, I want to you to officially meet Emily Adler, a former student here. Miss Adler's power lets her enter a person's mind. I trust her absolutely, and hope you'll understand that I eschew the need for secrecy while in her presence.

"That being said, I wanted you to be the first one to hear this…

"As you know, we're looking for the people who got away: the mages, the Vitesse brothers, Ogre, Randy's father, Haboob, Skew… Miss Adler has graciously volunteered to try and pluck any pertinent information from the minds of the three we were able to capture. Cleave's mind is…” He looked to the other Esper.

              "He's nuts," Emily said.

Newton nodded curtly. "Blackguard is very guarded, but… she saw into Caballero’s mind, and it's troubling what she found there…

"Blackguard's real name is Robert Crawford, and Caballero is Viktor DeGallow. Given the revelations the Drifter made, and your account that you met your otherworldly doppelganger, I think it's highly probable that these are Robert and Viktor's doppelgangers from another such dimension. It's also possible that this might explain what happened to Robert."

"The way that Viktor remembers it," Emily explained, "one minute they were in bed—they're… more than partners in crime…" She started to blush. "There was a flash of light and suddenly, they were in the same room… only different."

"I asked Miss Adler to peer into my memories," Newton said, "and the flash of light she saw in Viktor's is similar to the one I witnessed when the Drifter absconded with your group. I think it's safe to conjecture that the power that transported you to another universe did the same for Paladin, Blackguard, and Caballero. Whether or not it caused Paladin and Blackguard to trade places, or whether Paladin is in a third dimension is unknown… but we now have a theory we as to what happened to him.

"It's hard to know for certain, as we don’t know when exactly Paladin vanished, but their arrival seems to coincide with his disappearance. Caballero wasn't sure what happened. Apparently, Paladin and Blackguard both resided in a manor they inherited from their grandfather, but both men chose to decorate it differently. Different sheets, different pictures on the walls, different clothes in the closet, different cars in the garage… It was the same home, but everything in it was different—and yet, it was obviously the home of Robert Crawford.

"At first, they couldn’t rationalize what had happened. Furthermore, our world’s Robert left nothing in his home indicating that he and Paladin are the same person. Still, they tried to reason out what had happened. Not long after, they encountered you in London. I believe the school was mentioned—not by name, of course… but it became the only clue they had.

"They headed to Spain, and met with Viktor's family. Caballero impersonated our Viktor, and learned about the school's location from his family. Next thing you know, they're here in Vienna, where they caught the attention of Siegfried. He became an ally, theorizing to them that they had been displaced from another dimension."

"He offered to use his connections to find them a way home," Emily explained. "That's what they were going to get for their part in yesterday’s attack."

"And now they're back to square one," Newton said. "Given that they were unaware of the nature of their predicament, it's unlikely they know where Paladin is. However, we did get something from them…"

He offered Harry a folded-over piece of paper. Inside was an address in Kensington—one of the more upscale neighborhoods in London. Only the richest of the rich lived there.

"Robert Crawford lived alone," Newton said. "For the last few months, these two have been the only ones in or out of that place. I doubt you'll find anything that will lead to us finding Paladin, but… I thought you should have that. I'll understand if you want to go there, but… I'll ask you to give me an hour, or so. I'd like to brief everyone over…" A dejected sigh escaped the man. "Everything."

              JACK
As Jack made his way to meet with McClanahan, he spotted Vlad. It had come as a surprise--Vlad's return to the school. They hadn't had much time to talk yet, given everything that had happened. It looked as though the Romanian boy wanted to change that.

              OTSO
Doctor Talley had kicked everyone out save for her two patients--Beatrice and Kirstie--and their respective boyfriends. With everyone asleep, it was quiet across the infirmary--that was until he heard the door open. "-seen a decent baseball game in years," he heard his father say. "When I was a boy, my dad used to take me and my cousin Chris to the K. Have you ever been?"

"Naw," said Roger Murphy, "only park I ever been was the Stick. I took Lex and Stevie once or twice."

The two men smiled at Otso--the only one awake. "Hey," Otso's father whispered. "Wanna get something to eat?"

He rubbed his eyes blinking as he looked around, a little confused as to where he was. He'd slept like a rock once he'd finally ran out energy. Adrenaline, fear and guilt could only fuel the engine for so long, and all the running and fighting were exhausting. Neo powers sped him up and gave him the strength to run to impossible lengths, but they didn't completely negate the fact he had to run every step of the way.

If the school had exploded during the night he'd have probably slept through it.

He blinked a few times then looked over at Kirstie, offering her a groggy smile, "Hey you. How you doing?"

Kas was shocked at Agnes' appearance. Not that she was in tattered clothing, though that was somewhat distressing, but the real shock was he could tell what hair color she had, the pallor of her complexion. Then it fully dawned on him what she'd said. She could enter dreams. He was still asleep.

Gathering his wits about him as best he could, he answered her. "Ja, I am Magnitude. What can I do for you Fraulein Gareth?"

Gwyn rolled his shoulders, still trying to wake his body up. He'd skipped his morning workout in order to be here. He supposed he could do that while Newton briefed the others. And so Not-Robert was a poof. He wondered if that meant Robert was as well. Part of Gwyn, the childish part, had always wanted Robert and his ma to fall in love. Maybe that was why nothing had happened between them.

"I can wait. It would take me nigh an hour to get there anyhow." There was something else, something he half-remembered.

"Ah, I almost forgot. Headmaster, when Elizabeth-The Drifter-appeared, she said something to you. Something that made you trust her-when the only other version of her you'd met was dead and revenge crazy. What was it?" Gwyn didn't have much of a right to ask, but he was going to anyway.

"I'm still pretty sore," Kirstie said, gently touching the bandaged spot. Last night, Doctor Talley had ignored the couple's warnings and tried to suture the girl's injuries. Her stool had not survived the ordeal, but Martin had been nice enough to heal the woman's own injuries, once she had regained consciousness.

In the end, Kirstie had stitched her side up herself. She'd had no choice: every other idea they had was counteracted by her powers. Even Mister Noble was stumped on how to help her take control over her newly evolved powers.

"Daddy landed a bit ago," she said sadly. "Mum's with him. They'll be here soon." She took a deep breath before admitting, "I really need your hugs, Sexy Lexy."

"Actually, sir... I have a note." The Drifter swung her messenger bag around. She slowly raised the front flap and dug down deep into one of the front pouches. Slowly she brought out a piece of paper and offered it to the headmaster.

Newton unfolded the paper and read it, then looked back at the Drifter with a bit of confusion.

"Like I said: I've met you all before."

Newton folded the paper back up and handed it to her. "I trust her," he said, looking to the others.

"She it was a letter of introduction... to myself... from myself.

"You might be skeptical: anyone could imitate my handwriting, but the letter mentioned things only I know, Harry. I told myself to trust her. That girl had met and won the trust of some future version of myself, who wrote a letter asking past versions of himself to implicitly trust the Drifter. It gives me a headache to think of the implications, but... that letter? I read it and I had no choice but to believe everything she was telling us."

                              JACK
Vlad opened his arms and pulled his friend into a hug. "I'm glad to hear that," he said. "I don't suspect many will be happy with this prodigal son's return.

"I, uh... I could use your advice, Jack. I am standing at a fork in the road. My choices seem so easy, I'm sure: stay or go. Tallemaja is still out there, and I fear she may try to resurrect Laputa. I have no leads on her, but I could go out and try to stop whatever insane plot she comes up with next... or I could stay here at the school." He sighed. "If I stay, I'll likely be turned over to the proper authorities for the role I played in what happened last autumn. Given that I have effectively been on the lam all this time, I do not expect to get the same leniency Herta and the others were graced with.

"I suppose that is the real reason I've come to you: if I am bound for shackles, there is unfinished business I should tend to, and while I would be loathe to drag you into my personal problems, there are few I trust as much as you, Jack.

"You've heard about the monster who rampaged in Prater? Ogre? Her real name is Adela, and she is my older sister."

                              VIOLET
"I heard your brother was just amazing," Lena added. "Some of the people he saved were on the news last night--he apparently took on a terrorist by himself."

Even with her back to Rose, Violet could hear Rose rolling her eyes. "Yes, he saved a few people, but I saved an entire hospital."

                              OTSO
Outside of the room, the two men walked with the Finnish teen. "How's your girlfriend doing?" his father asked.
