    The Blue Knight

Gwyn felt odd about Mezzanine. Something squiffy about her.

"Flippin perfick, that is. How worse?" He asked the hundreds-year old man.

NVAE: WRECK ROOM (Blue Knight and Greystone; NPCs: Plenty)
Newton regarded Blue Knight calmly. "Several attacks-"

"Others are coming," Mezzanine said, interrupting him. "It may be prudent to not repeat yourself, and wait for the others to arrive."

Newton sighed, begged the boys to forgive him, and proceeded to do the one thing he did not want to do now: wait.

NEW VINDICATORS ACADEMY OF EUROPE #17: Distract

        Saturday, March 21, 2009

NVAE: WRECK ROOM (Blue Knight, Current, Fluxx, Greystone, Magnitude, Shiver; NPCs: Yes)
"Is that everyone?" Newton asked when Shiver slipped into the room.

"We're still missing Lex," Kirstie insisted. Right on cue, Lex and Catargi entered the room. At the first sign of him, Kirstie grabbed his face, pulled his lips to hers, and kissed him urgently. "Don't you ever do that to me again," she commanded once she pulled away.

The headmaster looked out over the students, and allowed a mournful sigh to escape his lips. "This city needs saving, and it appears fate designs to make you her saviors. As you all know, reports of skeleton armies, as well as giant skeletons, have come in from the city. We now know that this is the work of a group of mages--two of which are still at large.

"The Vindicators engaged these mages, and as a result, Quintessence, Backlash, and Hubris are currently missing. Before Pict, Kiln, and Fey could move to rescue their teammates, however, several other situations have arisen. At present, we do not know if these attacks on Vienna are being staged by the surviving two mages, allies of theirs we did not know about, or--quite simply--another group looking to take advantage of the situation we were initially put in.

"What we do know is that there are seven--seven reports of attacks across the city." Behind him, the air displayed a map of Vienna, showing the school, and the site of each attack.

"We'll start with the closest one to us: the Prater. Dispatch has picked up distress calls about a giant monster rampaging there.

"At Stephansplatz, cameras are rolling." The map changed then, showing footage from the scene: several buildings had collapsed; some were even being swallowed by the earth itself. "There are people trapped, and we've no idea what caused this disaster.

The map returned then, highlighting the northern most location. "Allgemeines Krankenhaus is the site of the next attack. Emergency calls from Vienna General Hospital suggest that they are under attack by a Neo-Sapien who is specifically targeting health care workers. Many doctors and nurses have fled, for fear they'll be this madman's next victims. As such, there are few left to tend to the patients housed there... and that number is steadily decreasing as this man finds them.

"All it takes to see what is happening at Josefstadt is a look out the window. That area of Vienna has been devoured by an enormous dust storm. Those who escape this catastrophe have not been able to give us much more information as to what is happening inside."

Newton flashed up an image of a building. "This is Hundertwasser House then... and this is it as of a few minutes ago." The image changed then, showing what looked like a lush jungle. "This area of town has been overrun with plants--some carnivorous. Others... unnaturally hostile."

        Randy visibly stiffened.

The map returned then, showing one of the two locations furthest out. "We've gotten report that a pair of Neo-Sapiens are attacking Kunsthistorisches Museum. Two men. No description beyond 'highly aggressive'.

"Finally, Schönbrunn Palace... This one is a low priority for us, but a big one for the higher ups. Apparently, anything of value is disappearing at an alarming rate.

"Even at their full capacity, the Vindicators could not hope to put out so many fires at once. That is why I'm asking you all--any of you who are brave enough, and capable enough... to lend this city your strength. I hate myself for asking you to risk your lives in this manner, but I fear what will happen if we do nothing." The headmaster bowed to the student body. "Please," he begged, "your city needs you."

It is 9:00 AM. Time is currently counting.

It is assumed that prior to this briefing, Martin would have healed Kiln and Fey.

Hero points are reset. One hero point to everyone for railroading them all into this scene.

From the last session... power point to Magnitude, Blue Knight, and Shiver. They were the ones who primarily found themselves in combat, and are the ones who need the most catching up to Current, Fluxx, and Greystone. I hope that's all right with everyone.

        Any questions?

Fluxx (he was in uniform), had been going around and dematerializing any plants in the room it was the same trick the Curies used to store cell phones and such by breaking them into their component parts and just storing their patterns for later rematerialization. His sister (under the control of Lacuna) showed him the trick.

He also blacks the windows with a film of carbon.

As an added precaution he asks Catalyst to connect the minds of everyone here, Tantivy, if she's in range, a mage named Gwen, and, if she could find her, Tallemaja.

He steps up to call their attention.

~I can only pray my telling you zis does not sign Tatjana's deaz warrant.~ He let the gravity of those words sink in before continuing.

~But I do not zink she would like it if I let you all go out wizout being fully prepared. Rembrandt, from what I know of ze man was ze same. I know of zis new group. ~Robor is an Irishman wiz a black shillelagh, I zink he could control plants like our Randy.~ Fluxx will send mental images of these people as he describes them, along with their scent for any who could recognize such.

~The remaining two Vitesse brozers are superspeedy French criminals.~

~A man 'oo looks like Viktor DeGallow, and a man 'oo resembles ze 'ero, Paladin of zis world are working togezer. Zey will 'ave powers much like zeir counterparts, I assume.~

~Haboob, A dusky-skinned Afrikaan fellow is likely responsible for ze sand storm. Ozer capabilities unknown but 'e seemed shrewd and intelligent.~

~Cleave is an Austrian man... ~ Fluxx's face turns into a sneer, ~'E can summon and animate swords. Sadistic. 'E 'urt Tatjana.~

~Skew was described by Ursa once, an Englishman wiz a pug-nose. 'E can create portals for offense and defense, Otso wasn't any more specific zan zat. Zey also 'ave a teleporter zat needs to smoke but possesses incredible range, unknown offensive capabilities.~

Catalyst reached out with her mind and connected as many minds as she could. Lex's mind was unreachable to her, as was Tallemaja's. Similarly, Tantivy resisted the connection.

I can only pray my telling you zis does not sign Tatjana's deaz warrant, Fluxx thought, but I do not zink she would like it if I let you all go out wizout being fully prepared.

            That would be me,
Newton announced. He looked visibly shaken. Potentially Mister Bottom, as well. I doubt it, though: Mister Bottom has not been nearly as public about his presence here as I have. Siegfried is an man who feels cursed by his own immortality, and blames the meddling of other immortals for the pain he has endured. He seeks to stop men like myself from interfering in the lives of mortals by permanently ending our existence. Rest assured, he has the capabilities to do so. Those brought down by Siegfried do not cheat death.

Thank you, Martin. If he is the one behind this, then there is no need to ask any of you to do anything. Doctor Fischer, please contain all students and faculty members inside of the Wreck Room.

            Transparent walls formed around everyone.

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

            Mezzanine immediately shut herself down.

"If Siegfried is attacking this city to draw me out, then it seems there is only one course of action that can be taken. Just as I was prepared to ask you children to sacrifice anything to save this city, so am I. It was an honor serving you, and I wish you nothing but many, many years of happiness."

With that, the headmaster turned, and left the Wreck Room, determined to sacrifice himself to save the city.

Lex still somewhat unbalanced by a very passionate kiss from a girlfriend he thought was mad at him didn't really say much as they were laying things out.

But when the walls went up his eyes started to glow.

"That's your brilliant plan? There are still mages running around, we still have students missing, and this is some kind of attack to draw the old man out?" Lex crosses his arms, "The old man doesn't go out! They're coming here and you're trying to trap us into a box."

Lex fumed for a moment then looked around, "Well, guess we got four options so far as I can see. Martin can ghost us out, me and Kirstie can blow us out, I can shut down this machine the hard way. Or you can shut it down now before I wreck your fancy high tech toy."

"Either way I'm not letting you trap us like fish in a barrel!"
Lex glares at the control room, "Shut. It. Off."

Everything was quiet, and everyone was looking at Martin, and then the headmaster. Several moments went by, when suddenly transparent walls formed around everyone.

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," said Newton.

                Mezzanine immediately shut herself down.

It was confusing: why the walls, and why shut down his daughter? "If Siegfried is attacking this city to draw me out," Newton said, "then it seems there is only one course of action that can be taken."

"That's your brilliant plan? There are still mages running around, we still have students missing, and this is some kind of attack to draw the old man out?" Lex crossed his arms over his chest.

"Just as I was prepared to ask you children to sacrifice anything to save this city, so am I. It was an honor serving you, and I wish you nothing but many, many years of happiness."

As the headmaster turned to leave the room, Lex's anger continued to build up. "The old man doesn't go out! They're coming here, and you're trying to trap us in a box."

Lex fumed for a moment and then looked around. "Well, guess we got four options so far as I can see: Martin can ghost us out, me and Kirstie can blow us out, I can shut down this machine the hard way, or you can shut it down now before I wreck your fancy high tech toy. Either way I'm not letting you trap us like fish in a barrel!" Lex glared at the control room, "Shut. It. Off."

And like that, the walls went down.

"Wait," said a perplexed Kirstie, "Doctor Fischer actually listened to Lex?"

"No," said Catalyst, "she listened to me."

Violet didn't have the same attachment to Newton that the older students had but she still didn't like what he was doing. So she was grateful when they were released. "I don't know what we can do against so many but I'm ready to help. First thing is, we have to stop Mr Newton, right?" Violet looked to the upperclassmen for a plan.

"I'll stay," Mario offered. "I don't know what use an elephant would be in the field, anyway..."

"I'll stay too," offered Mira. Viktor was still isolated, and it was unlikely she would leave him with so much unfolding. Likewise, Otso nodded. Though Beatrice's life was no longer in danger, he wasn't about to abandon her after what he had bore witness to.

"I don't know what we can do against so many, but I'm ready to help," offered Violet.

As the students began to divide themselves up, Lex began to grow impatient: "I'm going to the hospital to shut down the psycho who's killing people. I'll be back as soon as I can." He hesitated long enough to look at Kirstie. "Stay safe, okay?"

Kirstie grabbed his wrist and shook his head. "You're not going anywhere without me," she insisted.

"Here's an idea," said Jack, "let's come up with something resembling a plan before we run off blindly. These guys are supposed to be ready for us so clearly they have a plan it'd be stupid of us not to. "First off, who's willing to go out into the city?"

He couldn't take Kirstie--not if it was this dangerous. Without another moment wasted, Lex was out the door, and Kirstie's heart broke.

"Your dad is gonna kill me," the speedster's father told her. Kirstie was baffled when Roger Murphy offered her his hand. "Let's go," he said.

                          "I don't-"

"Do you want to help Lex, or not?"

Kirstie didn't hesitate. She grabbed Roger's hand, and suddenly, electricity began to crackle around the pair of them. Roger took off like a gunshot, leaving energy in his wake as he and Kirstie headed off after Lex.

Violet watched them leave. "First thing is, we have to stop Mr Newton, right?"

"His will is a little too strong for me to control him," Catalyst said.

"On it," Fiore said, darting after the headmaster.

Though they were nowhere near Lex's speed, Roger and Kirstie were running fast. "How are you doing this?" Kirstie asked. "I thought you could only generate enough electricity to power small machines?"

He slowed down and looked around, disoriented. "Where are we?" he asked.

Kirstie felt downhearted. Roger was fast--not as fast as his son, but he was capable of sharing that speed with anyone he touched. The only problem seemed to be his lack of a sense of direction. "This way," she said, pointing.

Lex left the school, and flashed through the streets of Vienna. In less time than it took him to sneeze, he was standing in the shadow of Vienna General Hospital. Squad cars surrounded it; the police were forming a line, imploring people to return to their homes. Behind them, Lex saw that the glass had been busted from the doors--inwards, he noticed. They had been shot out, and from the outside.

Magnitude didn't try to stop Lex from leaving. Certainly his powers would have been valuable for any plan, but Lex was a loose cannon who didn't think before he did anything and bounced around from calamity to calamity guided by his ego and his emotions, while blaming everyone else for the disasters his lack of discipline wrought. In the long run, he was a distraction they could do without.

A perfect example was the threat he levied against Fischer for closing off the Wreck Room. Anybody with the least lick of sense or engineering knowledge would insulate the equipment from electrical surges with grounds and buffers. More than likely had Lex unleashed his powers it would have amounted to a lightshow of greater threat to people stuck within the walls than to the machinery generating the walls. Fortunately Emily was here to head that bit of idiocy off at the pass.

Shaking his head in disgust, Kas turned to jack and Violet. "Undoubtedly, we need a plan and we need one quickly. First, the hospital is more in line with Martin's ability to handle, since he can heal any injured health workers. Since there may be survivors who have exhausted themselves fleeing the killers, taking Astrid wouldn't be a horrible idea either."

"If we can locate Gasper, his weather controlling abilities would be ideal for countering Haboob's, haboob and Lexus would be perfect for instructing him on the error of his ways mano-a-mano."

"I will take care of the earth collapse, since I can remain airborne, away from any treacherous ground and I might want either Rheid or Felsic with me, since their powers would seem to lend them a degree of protection against earthen based disasters."

Rubbing his chin, he shrugged. "Somebody needs to act as Newton's bodyguards as well. Someone not immortal, just in case this Siegfreid Volsung has the ability to detect immortals at close range and that merely gains him a new target."

"Anyway, I am going to grab a new helmet. It should be ready by now while the rest of you formalize the plan. Then I'm headed off to where I can do the most good."

Okay, I'm going to spend a LP to edit the scene, so my new helmet is available.

I'm making a couple assumptions, so correct me if I'm wrong. First, I'm assuming that since it's a new chapter, out HP/LP reset and 2) that because the scene has changed I get the standard "between scenes" recovery (which would eliminate Kas's bruise). If either of these assumptions is incorrect, let me know, so I can edit my post.

                              Greystone:
                              [Jack Rexroth]
                              HP: 2

Jack watched as once again, Alex took off half cocked only to be followed by his dad and Kristie. Well at least they were likely to help him better than most the others.

"I think Randy should be part of the group going to Hundertwasser House given it's covered in plants. Maybe Fiore too, if we get him back here."

Rubbing his chin, he shrugged. "Somebody needs to act as Newton's bodyguards as well. Someone not immortal, just in case this Siegfreid Volsung has the ability to detect immortals at close range and that merely gains him a new target."
"Rheid's probably the best choice to be a bodyguard for the Headmaster given his powerset."

"I'll head for Kunsthistorisches Museum, it sounds someone more my style. Along with whoever else wants to go along."

                                The Blue Knight

At the mention of Blackguard, Gwyn's hands balled into fists. It was him. The false Robert. If he knew where they were he would-

Would what? On his best day he was not a match for Robert, and if this doppleganger was as good he'd just get beaten again. Still, at least he had intelligence to offer.

"If this Blackguard's powers are a match for Robert's, he will be able to fly, and summon forth armor, a shield, and a sword of red flames. Well, energy what's like flames. He can also see through-well, almost anything. Smoke, darkness, illusions, people that can turn themselves invisible, and he can spot things that are hidden easily, from concealed weapons to hidden bombs." Gwyn had been impressed the first time he'd seen that demonstrated, and only very slightly less impressed the next dozen or so times.

"And Cleave, well, his powers match a person I've met before-in another dimension." Gwyn didn't pause to let the ramifications of that sink in, he just went on.

"The swords he controls are deadly, and the man himself was a skilled fighter. Its best to take him out from distance, and with multiple attackers. His swords don't drop when he does, but the sooner he is unconscious, the less swords he can make."

He looked to the three newcomers-Eastern European the stocky one was, the others, well a pretty girl and a wisp of a boy in a helmet.

"Who are they?" He asked Jack surreptitiously.
