Lex rolled his eyes, "It's a wake up call. We left a small army of people protecting the front from a giant skeleton assault."

"And I haven't heard anything since the preacher went on a recruiting spree,"
Lex frowns, "Noise I'd be comfortable with, least then you know what's happening. All this quiet though? It's making me wonder what's going on that we just don't know about yet."

      Greystone:
      [Jack Rexroth]
      HP: 4
      Condition: Bruise (x1)

Suddenly, Greystone felt sick. His stomach lurched. He grabbed Blue Knight and used the teen to stay on his feet. He realized then that the room had been washed of colour: it was like watching an old television show--everything was in black and white...

Everything except for Blue Knight and Ursa.

It wasn't unusual to see Blue Knight wreathed in cerulean flames, but this was different: a blue haze surrounded him, with a green edge. It wasn't the flames he normally commanded, but an aura... an aura of color.

Ursa had one two, but his was much different: it was red--a deep, bold red.
It took everything Jack had not to fall over as his stomach gave him a serious kind of pain that he'd not felt in a couple of years, and while the cause then had been his first few meals of garbage that had caused him trouble he was fairly sure this time it was due to the magical fruit he'd eaten a few minutes ago. As another wave of pain rolled through his body, Jack took a hold of Harry to keep him upright as the pain was so bad that his knees buckled.

Then his view of the world changed and Jack knew for sure it was the effect of the golden apple as all color drained away except for Harry and Otso. The American had no clue what the hell all the colors surrounding his friends meant but he tried to focus himself.

The oddities didn't stop there: as he looked at them, Greystone saw something else: Blue Knight's head, left side, right arm, and his chest all seemed to be glowing with a faint luminescence. He quickly looked to Ursa, only to find that glow missing from the Finn.

Greystone was wracked then by a migraine of unrivaled intensity. He threw his head back, only to see a pair of burning blue eyes hovering over Blue Knight. He looked above Ursa and failed to see the eyes--instead, he saw what looked like a crimson tear drop.
Looking at Harry almost as if he was seeing him for the first time ever, Jack muttered. "What the hell is up with your upper body? Why is it glowing?" Then glancing over at Otso and having a similar reaction to his Finnish friend, Jack couldn't help but stare as he saw the deep crimson glow emanating from the bear. As the pain in his head faded somewhat, though it still felt like his head was splitting wide open, Jack was glad that apple hadn't brought on a change like the one Bulwark had undergone.

Straightening himself up, and letting the grip on Harry go as he did it Jack rubbed his temples. "That sucked."

Violet looked at Martin suspiciously. She had no way of knowing whether it was actually Martin or Tallemaja. But realistically, it didn't matter as long as whoever it was was willing and able to heal Beatrice. "Nevermind that, Beatrice is dying. You need to help her."

Fluxx continued to soar through the sky borne along by Magnitude's power. After getting all the information his could he extended an arm to Magnitude's helmet. He shifted his mouth and one of his ears to the extended hand to be able to communicate past the sheer winds.

"If we land near ze school entrance I can phase my way zrough to ze Infirmary to get to a dying Beatrice. Jack 'as consumed ze artifact zat ze mages sought - an apple zat some'ow grants immortality. We may be able to bluff zem in order to get ze stolen Vindicators back but all in all we are reduced to creative solutions." Fluxx reports.

"Incidently, Magnitude, not zat it matters to me, but 'ow long 'ave you been working for Tallemaja?" the Frenchman inquires.

Ever the multitasker, If Martin traded cell phone numbers with Gwen (a reasonable thing he would have done), Fluxx texts to her on his phone with his other hand.

~Gwen, Chuck was in school. Kidnapped Vindicators to pocket dimension. Chuck has spell to free them but can you work such magics?~

Kas could hear one side of Martin's conversation with Jack, but just barely, over the rushing wind of their flight. Whole chunks of conversation kept getting lost making it nigh impossible to keep up with whatever was happening back at the academy. Not for the first time, he silently cursed leaving his helmet in the other dimension with Princess Sophie. Now that Tantivy had thrown a tantrum, an event that was rapidly becoming something of a trademark for her, he had no radio communication available to him at all.

Then Martin stretched over to speak to him and his lips compressed in a hard line when he heard about Beatrice. Had Beatrice been injured before the apple was discovered? Both Jack and Harry knew that force feeding the girl the golden apple would have saved her life. Why did Jack choose to eat it himself? Kas's gut clenched as he considered that last part. Jack wouldn't be the first person tempted by power that left the defenseless to die so they could obtain greater might. He liked Jack and hoped Jack wasn't that type of person, but the suspicion was still there.

He didn't have time to think on it much given Martin's next question. "Tallemaja? What are you talking about Martin? I don't work for Tallemaja. I don't work for anyone. I use my abilities on behalf of the academy and Vienna, but I march to no ones fife."

The mouth on Fluxx's hand frowned slightly, not that it would have been that noticeable to the blind boy. "You arrived wiz a flock of Tallemaja's agents. I apologize for my assumption." Kas nodded at Martin's explanation. As a person who tried to stick true to his word himself, he could understand Martin's conundrum. He knew that many of their fellow students would just shrug off having broken an oath, especially to kidnappers and possible murderers, but he didn't. Martin was trying to stay true to his ethics while doing the right thing. That was not always easy, but that was the thing about ethics, once you started to view them as situational, then you were half way to discarding them altogether.

"If it helps at all, my first priority here is the city, not the school. The school has plenty of people who will fight for it or for their families or because they feel disrespected or because it's tuesday and they've got nothing better to do."

Kas didn't mean to sound bitter, but after hearing his Volunteers had simply given themselves over to Tallemaja his respect for a good many of his fellow students was plummeting. Especially, if Tallemaja then tried to kill Beatrice and the response to that murder attempt was for the single person who could have saved, without a doubt if the reports of a Golden Apple were true, chose instead to empower themselves. Disgusting...every one of them.

"Anyway, I am coming to this information late, so I hope you've had time to consider a plan of some sort for dealing with those swine. If not, we are going to have to play this by ear and improvise like mad."

Honestly, he was half tempted to just withdraw the gift of flight from the others besides Martin and leave it to Candyman to keep them from splattering on the street below, but that was childish. Plus if, the trio was being genuine with their offer of aid, they could be extremely useful.

"It's making me wonder what's going on that we just don't know about yet."

Miss Catargi froze in her tracks. "Ask and ye shall receive," she said, nodding towards the window. Southwest of the school--at least three miles away from the school--there looked to be a massive dome of light brown clouds swirling around a section of the city.

NVAE, WRECK ROOM: OTSO'S CHAMBER (Blue Knight and Greystone; NPCs: Ursa)
                      "Come on, let's keep moving."

Ursa nodded in agreement. He was determined to find Tallemaja and eat her.

The first order of business was going to be getting everyone equipped. Without the host dispatcher, their commlinks had been useless in the other dimension. Greystone wasn't sure if Blue Knight had left his back there, had it damaged in the fight Magnitude pulled him out of, or just simple not put it back in since returning. In any case, he would need one--as would Ursa, if the Finn was going to be working with them.

Outside of Otso's chamber, they were able to inform the faculty of all that had transpired: the mages attacking the city were after Tallemaja; Tallemaja had summoned Laputa to the school; Violet and Armande had taken an eviscerated Beatrice to the infirmary, where an injured Kiln and Fey already were; the Tharivol brothers were potential targets and would need protection; Pict was the only surviving Vindicator and currently had the leader of the mages restrained...

As he fed them the story, Mezzanine--who had been stationed to defend the students here--approached her father and pulled him aside. "It seems that things have progressed," the headmaster said gravely. "The situation is worse now."

VIENNA (Fluxx and Magnitude; NPCs: Candyman, Catalyst, Mikayla, Prodigy, Tantivy)
As they flew, Fluxx and Magnitude conversed with each other. Given the method Fluxx chose to communicate, the others were kept out of the loop of their conversation.

As they neared the school, Fluxx felt his phone vibrate. It was a message from Gwen: Only if he has a scroll, it read. Chucks an abjrr n im enchtr. Diff magic. Complicated.

Keep moving, Kas, Prodigy said across a newly established telepathic link. I need to tell you all about something alarming. I've getting transmissions through my helmet, and it seems the people who abducted Tatjana have made their move. Look behind us.

To everyone but Magnitude, they could see an enormous vortex of swirling sand rising up over the city. Emily, please share your sight with Kas, so that he can see what is happening. The German girl did as she was commanded: much like he had when he stopped Laputa from crashing into the city, Kas was suddenly able to see, albeit using someone else's eyes.

It's more important that Martin be taken to the school, to tend to the injured. From there, we should formulate a plan of attack. That dust cloud is the only visible disturbance right now, but I'm getting reports of several others, all across the city. We need to mobilize.

Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world. They have been observed in the Sahara desert (typically Sudan, where they were named and described), as well as across the Arabian Peninsula, throughout Kuwait, and in the most arid regions of Iraq."

                      Things Martin knows about Haboob:
                      • "So, are you Cleave? or maybe ze unfortunately named 'Ha-BOOB'?"

"If you knew Haboob, you would not mock him. That man is a fiend... and I know a thing or two about fiends. I'm Caballero," said the faux-Viktor.

                      And later...
                      • “It was an idle threat.” A dusky-skinned fellow draped in desert camouflage leaned against the back wall. From his accent he was from Africa—but Martin couldn’t place his country of origin from his accent. From his tone, however, Martin could presume the man was cold and emotionless. “Everything we have on the boy says he is no killer.”

“Be that as it may, Haboob,” said Blackguard, who could not bring himself to look the other man in the eye, “we have taken his friends. We have made him desperate. Desperate men do desperate things.”

I think it is very safe to say Martin could connect the dots and assume that this sandstorm is the work of Haboob.
NVAE: INFIRMARY (Shiver; NPCs: Beatrice, Rheid, Tallemaja)
Martin made his way to Beatrice, and put his hands over her wounds. Slowly, the webbing Greystone had spun began to deteriorate. Beneath it, Beatrice's skin was stretching across her injuries--even the fabric of her shirt was stretching to knit itself back together.

When he was finished, Martin took her hand and felt her for a pulse. "She's steady," the Frenchman was relieved to say. "She'll survive."

Kas scowled at the notion yet another threat had appeared before the first had been dealt with, but there was nothing to be done about it. Still, he almost lost control when Emily projected her visual input into his mind. He really wished telepaths would quit doing that. He had been without sight for years and the sudden influx of visual data was disorienting. He just wasn't used to perceiving the world that way anymore.

He also had to bite back a vitriolic response to Prodigy's exhortation for him to get them to the school. They were flying at 250mph, which for a group of people unfamiliar with guiding their own aerial path, was probably pushing the envelope of safety as it was.

"We'll be at the school any moment now." He answered grimly.
